Burna Boy, J Hus, And Black Sherif Are Headliners For Afro Nation’s 2023 Festival In Nigeria

The world’s biggest Afrobeats festival, Afro Nation, is heading home. Throughout the year, the multi-day event has had stops in Detroit, Miami, and Portugal. But come this December, the live performance movement will make its highly-awaked return to the continent of Africa. The dates for Afro Nation Nigeria 2023 have been revealed, and Burna Boy will be one of the featured headliners.

In a posting on Instagram, the organization revealed that the festival will take place on December 19 and 20 in Lagos at the Tafawa Balewa Square. J Hus, as well as Black Sherif, are also slated to perform at the festival.

Afro Nation became an international hit due to its incorporation of music genres across the diaspora, including Afrobeats, Afro-fusion, Amapiano, R&B, hip-hop, and more. Although the full lineup hasn’t been shared, judging by the melting pot of entertainers that appeared at the festival’s other installment earlier this year, Afro Nation Nigeria 2023 should be equally as diverse.

On the event’s website, organizers did reveal a tidbit about what ticketholders should expect. According to a note on the main webpage, due to the predicted influx of attendees, there will be a bevy of viewing areas to ensure everyone can glance at the main stage performances.

Afro Nation Nigeria 2023 has begun VIP pre-sales for users subscribed to their email newsletter. General sales will begin soon. Find more information here.

DaBaby Drops “FUKUMEAN” And “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” Freestyles

DaBaby is back with a couple new freestyles. The Ohio-born performer has been leaning into freestyling quite a bit as of late, dropping one off over 23-year-old Bronx drill rapper Ice Spice’s “Deli” beat earlier this week. DaBaby also recently put his spin on Young Nudy’s 2023 Gumbo track featuring 21 Savage, “Peaches & Eggplants.” Now, he’s tapped one of the most successful tracks from Gunna’s album, A Gift & a Curse, “FUKUMEAN.”

In a new clip, he’s seen spitting bars over the viral beat, and controversially calling for Young Thug’s release from prison. “When I hit from the back make her holla ‘free Thug,’” he raps. Famously, Gunna’s accused of “snitching” on the YSL figurehead amid the label’s RICO case. He’s since gotten a great deal of backlash, a lot of which surrounded his new album. Regardless of the scandal, the album has managed to be successful, and listeners seem to have enjoyed it. DaBaby embodies his signature carefree flow on this latest freestyle, centering his rhymes mostly around women.

DaBaby’s “FUKUMEAN” And “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” Freestyles

Commenters had a lot to say about his “Free Thug” bar, but either way, fans think it’s pretty solid. DaBaby also recently unveiled his freestyle over Burna Boy’s I Told Them track with 21 Savage, “Sittin’ On Top Of The World.” The rapper brings a menacing sound to the mellow beat, but manages to capture the original’s laid-back feel in his accompanying music video. In the video, DaBaby is seen living his best life, cruising around in a convertible and taking in the scenery.

In other DaBaby news, the rapper was spotted in the studio last month with a few unexpected peers. He was joined by Nas and Hit-Boy, as well as Ab-Soul, and Big-Hit. It’s unclear what exactly they were working on, but fans are looking forward to new music. Share your thoughts on the freestyles down below, and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates on DaBaby.

Burna Boy’s ‘I Told Them…’ Finds Afrobeats Taking A Backseat In His Vision

Burna Boy wants to bring afrobeats to the world. Well, afro-fusion that is at least, as he emphatically claims as not only his genre, but one he also created. Afro-fusion blends elements of afrobeat (different from afrobeats), hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, reggae, and more – elements that are at the foundation of what many know as the afrobeats genre as a whole. In Burna’s mind, this mixture is supposed to be universally palatable as it brings African elements in and outside of the music to the masses. Afro-fusion has been present to varying degrees among Burna’s past projects, but following the release of his beloved African Giant project in 2019, Burna sought to make afro-fusion appear grander and more encompassing altogether.

That brings us to his seventh album I Told Them…. Released 14 months after his sixth LP Love, Damini, Burna Boy pushes his “afro-fusion to the world” agenda more than ever. The album’s lead single, “Sittin’ On Top The World” with 21 Savage, aims to re-emulate the success of “Last Last” as it samples and interpolates Brandy and Mase’s “Top Of The World” to boast about his star status. In the end, what comes out of it is a record that sounds like a product of ‘90s hip-hop more than anything in the afrobeats world. The next single, “Big 7,” though without a sample, is made in a similar vein while erring for a lighter pop feel. In both cases, the “afro” part of the songs exist through Burna Boy’s lyrics as his mannerisms remain while also flashing a line or two in pidgin.

Other examples appear throughout I Told Them… “City Boys” supplies a sample from Jeremih’s “Birthday Sex” classic, “If I’m Lying” shoots for a stripped-down R&B record, and rap legends RZA and GZA contribute interludes on the album. Altogether, Burna’s display of afro-fusion seems to be more equally distributed across the incorporated genres, rather than afrobeats having more of a dominating presence as exhibited on past projects. One could even argue that afrobeats has taken a backseat role through the album’s 15 songs. Even though records like “Normal,” “Giza” with Seyi Vibez, “On Form,” and “Dey Play” more into the afrobeats world, it does nothing more than to balance the scale that holds the more universal records on the other side. Though the approach altogether does make for a palatable body of work to push out into the world, it also leaves his longtime fans to grapple with the reality of their star moving further and further away from his home base — sonically that is — over the years.

That all goes to say that I Told Them… is a solid body of work at the end of the day. Though it pales in comparison to his earlier albums like Outside and African Giant, it still makes for a fun and spirited listen that supplies worthy contributions to your summer playlist in the season’s final weeks. I’ll even go further to say that from a strictly musical point of view, it appears that his “afro-fusion to the world” goals were somewhat successful. The project became the first African album in history to debut at No. 1 on the UK album charts while the album is set to be his second top-40 release on the US album charts in his career. Yet, all of that gets pushed to the side as Burna spent the week leading up to the album’s release criticizing the afrobeats genre in a simultaneous attempt to elevate his status and position in the genre through conversations in American media.

For anyone who follows afrobeats and has love for it, watching Burna Boy tell Zane Lowe that afrobeats lacks substance is incredibly frustrating. Watching Burna Boy tell Wallo & Gillie that he doesn’t know what “afrobeats” is can only make one laugh at the sudden cluelessness. Burna Boy’s claims in multiple interviews that he created afro-fusion are very debatable, and at best you can say it was not a solo effort as Davido and Wizkid – names who achieved African success before him – as well as others also contributed to the afro-fusion genre as it currently stands. Though Burna preaches unity and dreams of a bridge between Africa and the world, it’s as if the bridge must lead to him, or go through him at the very least, for it to be validated in his eyes. Furthermore, the unity that’s spoken of seems to be constructed backward as Burna stands with outsiders and calls on those from home to follow his philosophy and cross the bridge to join him. When instead, Burna could invite outsiders to his home and build that bridge in collaboration with his peers in order to create an honest narrative that will most likely be beneficial to himself, and most importantly, the genre that allowed him to be the superstar he is today.

I Told Them… is supposed to sound like a triumphant celebration of victory over critics and detractors, all of whom have been proven wrong about Burna Boy’s career trajectory. Instead, we received an album that sits in the center of Burna’s latest era where he pushes narratives that are more false than true and damaging to the afrobeats genre which is highlighted by contributors who worked tirelessly to elevate it to the worldwide success that it has now. Look no further than “Thanks” which is upended by his frustration at the collective world’s refusal to blindly hail as the most supreme king. Altogether, it’s a contradiction that ultimately affects the album’s experience. Yes, the music can be enjoyed, but with the message behind it that Burna Boy has been preaching, it also can be frustrating. Burna Boy’s I Told Them… is a bold proclamation that ultimately depends on the listener’s experience, and time will tell if the gamble pays off.

I Told Them… is out now via Spaceship Records & Atlantic Records. Find out more information here.

Russ Questions Burna Boy’s U.S. First Week Sales For “I Told Them…”

Burna Boy cemented himself as one of the biggest international artists of the past few years, and that’s not because he’s not from the United States. Not only does he find a lot of traction in those markets, but fans all over the world celebrate his talents and skill. Recently, the Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer released his latest album, I Told Them…, and it debuted in the U.S. with 21K sales in its first week. While that’s definitely a successful benchmark for someone of his caliber, some expressed disappointment with these numbers and surprise that it didn’t sell more. Even rapper Russ had to step in on social media to give his thoughts, pointing to Burna’s worldwide appeal and success.

“If Burna Boy is doin 21k (in America) and sellin out arenas in America as well, how come artists who sell more than that (in America) aren’t doing arenas (in America) ?” Russ asked under DJ Akademiks’ coverage of the sales numbers for I Told Them… “Take a wild guess [crying-laughing emoji].” Of course, many pointed out that these sales are just in U.S. markets, and don’t reflect the attention he garnered in other countries. With this statement, the Atlanta-based MC posits that numbers aren’t everything, whether that’s artistically or commercially.

In fact, Russ has his own issues with album numbers, as he recently claimed that Billboard disqualified sales from his recent project SANTIAGO. “Billboard & Luminate took away ANOTHER 4,000 of my REAL sales over the weekend,” the 30-year-old tweeted. “Making that 10,000 sales total they took away from me while allowing major labels to fake their streams and sales and do monopolistic merch bundles. Only major labels are allowed to do merch bundles because the only approved vendor is a major label vendor. These numbers and charts are made up. The impact however is not. Shoutout to the fans.”

Meanwhile, he actually sold 42K album-equivalent units, which is quite impressive nonetheless. Conversations around numbers expect the highest feasible success, and nine times out of ten, they don’t forgive. Still, despite his complaints, the main takeaway is that any support from fans you get weighs much more than the commercial value you chase after. On that note, stick around on HNHH for the latest news and updates on Russ and Burna Boy.

Burna Boy Said J. Cole Called Him ‘Tupac Reincarnated In Africa’ During Their First Meeting

As Afrobeats continues to rise in prominence both stateside and abroad, Burna Boy has been the Afrobeats artist at the forefront of the movement. Earlier this year, he became the first Nigerian artist to headline a US stadium after also headlining the NBA’s All-Star Game halftime show and J. Cole’s Dreamville Festival while demand for his guest verses skyrocketed among contemporaries like J Hus and Byron Messia.

His popularity is such that J. Cole even compared him to Tupac. Sitting with the Rap Radar Podcast, Burna recounted how he ended up in the studio with J. Cole and a group of “tall as hell” basketball players, where the North Carolina rapper said, “This n****’s Tupac reincarnated in Africa” after hearing Burna “going off” for a few minutes. The bashful Burna says he shrugged off the comparison, but it wouldn’t be totally unfounded.

Although Burna hasn’t talked about it much recently, he’s been a proponent of the “One Africa” movement and refused to perform in South Africa for political reasons in 2020. Meanwhile, like Tupac, he’s been outspoken about authoritarian abuses, best embodied in his video for “Monsters You Made.” The two artists’ shared Pan-Africanist views are likely what prompted Cole to make the comparison, although they also share similar cultural impact and popularity as well.

The results of Burna and Cole’s collaboration will can be found on Burna’s new album I Told Them…, out now via Spaceship Records and Atlantic Records.

Burna Boy Clarifies Comments On Black Americans

Burna Boy found himself in hot water a few weeks back for saying Black Americans “lack culture” during an interview. “Why do you think Chinese Americans have their respect?” he questioned. “They don’t go through the things that African Americans go through.” Burna Boy added, “You know why? Because the Chinese American has a base. He actually knows where he’s from in China. Italian Americans know where their grandparents came from in Italy… Same goes for everyone else except African-Americans.”

Almost immediately, he received criticism for his remarks. Recently, he had a sit-down with Complex to provide some clarity. The Nigerian singer says that his words got misinterpreted. He also claims he ignores the negative attention because “people have their own agendas.”

Burna Boy Says He Wants To Bring People Together

“My mission is to bring us together. My mission is to build a bridge that can’t be broken, a bridge that should’ve always been there,” he says. “So for me, that’s not really relevant. I don’t really look at none of that because I feel like when people say that they have their own agendas.” He also reflected on his comments about Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan: “There’s nothing I said that Malcolm X didn’t say. There’s nothing I said that The Honorable Louis Farrakhan didn’t say. But, obviously, it’s Burna Boy saying it and he’s from Africa… All that’s beneath me. My mission and my movements [are] too divine for stupid sh*t like that.”

It seems that Burna Boy can’t escape drama these days. The singer/ songwriter is also facing backlash for his statements on Afrobeats. Burna Boy claims that many of the artists lack real “life experience.” In his opinion, the genre has become about “nothing.” Burna Boy also noted that music doesn’t have realistic depictions about the pitfalls of life. “That’s why you hear most Nigerian music, African Music, or Afrobeats, as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing. There is no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything,” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.

Travis Scott Led A Wildly Off-Key Rendition Of ‘Happy Birthday’ For Dave Chappelle At Madison Square Garden

Dave Chappelle turns 50 today, August 24, and he’s accomplished pretty much everything over the past five decades. Travis Scott is helping him add to the list. Scott’s Utopia track “Parasail” featuring Chappelle and Yung Lean debuted at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated August 12 — Chappelle’s first-career Hot 100 entry — and now, Chappelle is on the shortlist of people for whom Scott has sung “Happy Birthday” at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

According to The New York Post, Chappelle’s standup comedy tour stop at MSG on Tuesday, August 22, doubled as a birthday party.

Chappelle “shared the stage with surprise guests Travis Scott and Burna [Boy] who dropped in to perform surprise sets and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the self-proclaimed GOAT,” the publication relayed, additionally noting that Jeff Ross, Shane Gillis, George Wallace, Aziz Ansari, and Donnell Rawlings were on hand to open for Chappelle.

Complex circulated a video of Burna, Chappelle, and Scott relaxing backstage. Fox News executive producer Sabrina Wolman also posted about the event on X (formerly known as Twitter), listing the special guests and sharing video proof that Scott led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday” to Chappelle.

Per Vivid Seats, Chappelle will return to Madison Square Garden for shows on Friday, August 25, and Saturday, August 26. See all of his dates here.

Meanwhile, tickets still haven’t gone on sale for Scott’s Utopia – Circus Maximus Tour.

“The tour has now shifted their timeline and tickets will NOT go on sale this week,” The Detroit News reported on August 8. “More information to come once we have new details.”
