Burna Boy Is The Perfect Ambassador For Afrobeats

Over the past few years, as Nigerian pop music — also known as Afrobeats, perhaps a bit reductively — has grown more popular stateside, the artist who has emerged as the central focus for the movement is Burna Boy. Amid a constellation of rising stars such as Asake, Davido, Rema, and Wizkid, his has been the one that burns the brightest. From a semi-coincidental US breakout to becoming the first Nigerian musician to headline an American stadium tour (more on that later), Burna has become the most recognizable face of the genre and its unofficial ambassador from his homeland to the “land of opportunity.”

Of course, I knew all this going into the Los Angeles stop of his I Told Them… Tour Friday at BMO Stadium (home of the Los Angeles FC and Angel City FC soccer teams). But I was still unprepared for the show of sheer enthusiasm from the massive crowd at the recently renamed stadium. While the crowd itself was visibly smaller than the venue’s capacity of 22,000 seats, its energy filled the space, making the misty late-night show feel like the crowded arena show it probably should have been (for the record, the nearby Crypto.com Arena seats 20,000).

While I was perfectly prepared to jibe at the African Giant’s self-aggrandizing decision to pursue the eyebrow-raising “first artist” headlines over the more pragmatic decision to sell out an ostensibly smaller venue (not to mention, the seating shell game used to achieve those headlines), by the time Burna was three songs into his setlist, I was not only converted but I also fully believed that Burna is the perfect ambassador for Afrobeats in the US.

Some of this is down to background info. Having written about the artist for the past five years, I’ve gleaned some insights into his politics, including a belief in the small-but-growing “One Africa” movement, and his insistence on fighting to clarify the Afrobeats moniker. Burna staunchly rejects the classification, preferring the term “Afro-fusion,” which he believes is both more accurate and less confusing, considering his countryman Fela Kuti pioneered a genre called Afrobeat (no “S”) over 40 years ago.

And while he believes that Africa, the continent, should be united under one banner — sort of the way the EU is made up of several different countries using similar trade and financial laws — he is careful to note that “Afrobeats” paints with a broad brush that doesn’t accurately distinguish between contemporary African music such as Amapiano, Coupé-Décalé, Ethio-jazz, Gqom, Makossa, Sungura, and more. There are so many different sub-genres, instruments, languages, and cultures, that the term Afrobeats can truly be seen as reductive (and often is, outside of Nigeria).

But the main aspect of Burna’s performance that makes him such a perfect ambassador for Afro-fusion is, naturally, the music, and the ease and confidence with which he performs it. While the music itself often expresses a joy that can’t be easily put into words (and certainly not in less than these 800 characters), what I can say is I’ve never seen any artist appear to enjoy themselves onstage as much as Burna. Longtime readers will know: that’s a LOT of artists.

Both his ear-to-ear grin and his lighthearted, sometimes goofy dancing are infectious. Security gave up trying to keep concertgoers out of the aisles almost immediately on Friday, recognizing quickly that maintaining neat little lines would not only be impossible but ill-advised. You’ve probably seen how energetic some African dances can get; folks all around dipped and swayed and dropped down with the sort of urgency and stamina that would even make Megan Thee Stallion’s adamantium knees cry out for assistance.

Meanwhile, despite Burna’s lyrics mostly being in the pidgin Yoruba spoken among natives of the region, the crowd seemed to know every word, singing along like they were his real background vocalists (both sounded spectacular). He exhibited immaculate crowd control with call-and-response segments that brought the spirits of the ancestors out of the audience — even those without African ancestry (a group of SWANA guys behind me were having so much fun dancing in the aisle, it seemed like Burna’s dream of a united Africa was much closer than it might be in reality).

And even after the set lulled an hour in when Burna played most of his slow songs back-to-back (this after starting after 10 pm), he snatched the crowd back to wakefulness with joyous anthems like “It’s Plenty” and his breakout hit “Ye” before closing with his biggest hit to date, “Last Last.” That’s a guy who knows how to finish a show (confetti rain, band vamps, the whole shebang). With Burna Boy introducing more and more of the population to the music of his homeland, it makes perfect sense why Afrobeats is taking over the world.

Burna Boy Will Be The First Nigerian Artist To Headline A US Stadium With An Upcoming Show At Citi Field

When discussing the inspiration behind the globally successful album, Burna Boy wrote on Twitter, “Love, Damini is a personal body of work,” adding, “It’s about the ups and downs, the growth, the L’s and W’s. I’m excited to share this journey and roll out with you all.”

Burna Boy Promotes Living Life To The Fullest In His Joyous ‘It’s Plenty’ Video

Burna Boy continues to promote his new album, Love, Damini, with a new video for “It’s Plenty.” Opening with footage from his tour, on which he’s been filling up venues and packing festival stages, the video follows the self-proclaimed African Giant from the barbershop to his private plane to the streets of Jamaica, where a Carnival celebration is going in full force.

Burna Boy’s next festival appearance will be at the 2022 Lost In Riddim Afrobeats Music Festival in East San Jose on the weekend of Nigerian Independence Day, October 1st and 2nd. He’s headlining alongside Wizkid and Davido, presiding over a massive lineup that runs the gamut of the African diaspora, from Afrobeats to dancehall to grime.

Continuing his Love, Damini rollout, Burna Boy put in an appearance at 30 Rock in New York City to perform the album’s standout track “Last Last” on The Tonight Show. He’s also put out vibrant videos for the singles “Vanilla” and “For My Hand” with Ed Sheeran, as well as sold-out a show at the Madison Square Garden — becoming the first Nigerian artist to headline a show there in the process.

Burna Boy Delivers A Jazzy Performance Of ‘Last Last’ On ‘Fallon’

Burna Boy‘s hit single “Last Last” proved to be one of the buzziest songs of the past summer. Since its release, the song has reached the top of Billboard‘s Afrobeats Songs chart and has pulled in over and its video has pulled in over 75 million streams on YouTube.

Last night, Burna visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he performed the song accompanied by live instrumentalists. Throughout the performance, Burna’s vocals maintain the song’s Afrobeats roots, while the keyboardists, drummers, and saxophonists give the song a jazzy feel.

Burna Boy is often credited for helping popularize Afrobeats music in the United States. He’s accomplished several incredible feats, including selling out Madison Square Garden. While he dreams of playing many more iconic venues in his career, he revealed to Billboard that he also has several unconventional ideas for music performances.

“My dream venues, other than all the stadiums in the world, are unorthodox,” Burna said, “like a theme park or a f*cking train station. A concert in a big-ass train station, and there’s no trains, and the whole tracks are filled with people. I just want to do weird sh*t like that for my own pleasure.”

Burna Boy Details The Vibrant Life Of A Superstar Through His Eyes In The Video For ‘Vanilla’

Burna Boy took another step forward in his quest toward worldwide dominance with the release of his sixth album Love, Damini. The project arrived on Friday with 19 songs and contributions from acts all around the globe. They include American acts Kehlani, Blxst, and Khalid, Colombia’s J Balvin, British artists J Hus and Ed Sheeran, fellow Nigerian Victony, Jamaican singer Popcaan, and more. The project seems to be received well a few days after its release, but to keep up the promotion, Burna returns with a new treat in the form of a new video for “Vanilla.’

The record is a warm release that is placed toward the end of Love, Damini. In the new visual, Burna delivers a vibrant and exciting look at his superstar life through his own eyes thanks to the use of Ray-Ban Stories sunglasses. Throughout the video, we’re introduced to dancers, instrumentalists, chess players, a group of Burna fans, and more.

The video for “Vanilla” arrives after Burna dropped a romantic “For My Hand” visual with Ed Sheeran. It joins previously released videos “Kilometre” and the summer hit “Last Last.”

Burna Boy And Ed Sheeran Ascend The Highs Of Love In Their Romantic ‘For My Hand’ Video

Burna Boy enlists the help of Ed Sheeran for his latest video “For My Hand.” The duo harmonizes in an elevator about how they want to dance with their lovers forever before they stand atop New York City and Burna Boy himself even becomes immersed among the clouds. The romantic record is punctuated by a dancing couple in the elevator who just can’t seem to keep their hands off of one another.

It is an exciting time for Burna Boy as the video for “For My Hand” arrives alongside his sixth studio album Love, Damini. Love was originally supposed to arrive on July 2 but was pushed back a week. Despite the delay, the music is well worth the wait as the 19-song tracklist boasts features from Khalid, Kehlani, Blxst, Popcaan, J Hus, J. Balvin, and more. The 31-year-old’s single “Last Last” is extremely popular both culturally and commercially, likely finding its way into his canon along with his previous hits “Ye” and “On The Low” in addition to his major collaborations “Location” with Dave, “Be Honest” with Jorja Smith, “Ginger” with Wizkid, and the remix to Pop Smoke’s “Enjoy Yourself.”

Listeners waited almost two years for this Burna Boy LP after the August 2020 release Twice As Tall which quickly followed his massive 2019 sensation African Giant. Needless to say, Burna Boy has been living up to the titles of his last two albums and soundtracking the summertime. It will be interesting to see how Love, Damini measures up. “For My Hand” is definitely a strong start.

Burna Boy Is The King Of His Castle In The Grandiose Video For ‘Last Last’

In 2019 and 2020, Burna Boy declared himself king of afrobeats with his fourth and fifth albums African Giant and Twice As Tall. For what it’s worth, the star Nigerian singer proved that he was worthy of the title with the projects. African Giant gave Burna worldwide recognition, together with the release of “Ye,” while the success of Twice As Tall was stepped after it gave Burna his first Grammy award. Nearly two years after he released the award-winning album, Burna is ready to bring things to a new level, and its starts with his new single, “Last Last.”

On the new record, Burna conquers heartbreak and reinforces the claim that he is the best of the best. The track also arrives with a grandiose video that captures him in a celebratory mood around friends as he flaunts his lavish mansion, flashy jewelry, and of course, his Grammy trophy. “Last Last” was released together with an announcement about Burna’s sixth album.

Love, Damini, with the latter word being the singer’s first name, will arrive on June 30. Burna first announced the project last month at his Madison Square Garden show where he became the first Nigerian singer to have a headlining performance at the legendary venue. Love, Damini will feature 19 songs including “Last Last” and the previously released “Kilometre.”

Burna Boy Reveals His Plan To Release His New Album ‘Love, Damini’ During His MSG Concert

Burna Boy released his last album, Twice As Tall, under very different circumstances than his US breakthrough African Giant. Twice As Tall dropped in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic — which didn’t stop it from reaching No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and garnering a Best World Music Album Grammy Award. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to tour the album when it came out, the only thing truly detracting from its impressive success.

However, it doesn’t look like his next album will have those same problems. Burna unveiled the album’s title at the biggest signifier of his success so far: his recent concert at Madison Square Garden. It’ll be called Love, Damini, and according to a press release, it’s due to “release for his 31st birthday,” which would make it available on July 2. While that date is probably subject to change, it’s certainly exciting news for fans of Afrobeats — and for the 20,000 or so fans in attendance at his concert last night, where performed his global hits.

If you missed the show, not to fear; it streamed live on YouTube, with the video remaining available to watch.
