Doja Cat Teases “Surprise” Coming Monday, Announcement Garners “Blackface” Accusations

Doja Cat is reportedly dropping something on Monday. However, it’s unclear what that “something” actually will be. The video showed Doja being interviewed by a version of herself with a strange burned face. In the clip, Doja expresses the sentiment that she does indeed care about her fans. However, it is preceded by Doja’s inner voice saying that she hates her fans. While it’s unclear what Doja is putting forward, it’s interesting to see her address her relationship with her fans. As most people know, Doja has a tenuous, at best, relationship with her fans. But it’s not all roses with the announcement.

Because, as is the way with Doja, the announcement video did not come without controversy. Doja’s talk show host persona has been accused of being “blackface”. While it’s meant to be burned or muscular in complexion, it is understandable why some people are viewing it as racist in nature. However, what exactly Doja is dropping is still unknown. This is a developing story and we’ll have any updates as and when they emerge.

Doja Declares “Say So” A “Cash Grab”

Meanwhile, during a recent show in Denver, Doja made a shocking declaration on stage. The rapper called her hit single “Say So” to be a “cash grab”. It’s not the first time that Doja has derided her previous work. “Planet her and hot pink were cash-grabs and yall fell for it.” In a follow-up post, she added: “Now i can go disappear somewhere and touch grass with my loved ones on an island while yall weep for mediocre pop,” the rapper declared on Twitter.

However, “Say So” was certainly a very successful “cash grab”, if that’s what Doja really believes. It picked up both Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance and the 63rd Grammys. Furthermore, it spent one week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May of 2020. Despite all this, it’s clear that Doja is not done speaking on her past work.

Polish Singer Kuba Szmajkowski Is Being Criticized For A Kendrick Lamar Imitation That Used Blackface And The N-Word

A Polish singer is under scrutiny for a doing an impression of Kendrick Lamar while employing some ill-advised language and darkening his skin for a local karaoke show. Your Face Sounds Familiar pits eight celebrities against each other to imitate artists in the hopes of winning a cash prize. However, Polish singer Kuba Szmajkowski may have overstepped when he performed “Humble” as Kendrick in full blackface with braids, and eschewed common-sense self-editing for instances of the N-word in the song — something for which Kendrick has actually censured fans in person during his own performances.

Once the clip made its way online, some fans were disappointed in Szmajkowski’s decision to perform in blackface and use the N-word, neither of which seemed strictly necessary for him to do to give an authentic performance (he won that episode, the second of the 19th season, donating the prize money to the Przystań Nadziei Foundation, which helps children with cancer).

As it turns out, the show has had a bit of a history of similar incidents, with impressions of Beyoncé and Kanye West utilizing blackface and unflattering caricatures of African American Vernacular English. Unsurprisingly, it seems rappers are very popular in Poland.

Now, obviously, there’s a lot of cultural context that the Polish might not have regarding the damaging history of such stereotypes here in the States (blackface and racial caricatures were key to minstrel shows, which contributed to negative attitudes toward Black people, including inaccurate and reductive perceptions of their tendency for laziness, stupidity, and violence — ironic considering they were forced against their will to work for free under threat of violence).

But we’re in the year 2023, we have the internet now, and all of this stuff is relatively easy to find out. There’s just no excuse and shame on everybody involved. Somehow, the US has managed to put on a similar show and get rousing performances from its contestants without the use of offensive stereotypes. Lil Yachty and his wock should probably just stay home.

Polish Karaoke Competition Destroyed Online Over Kendrick Lamar Blackface Performance

Kendrick Lamar is one of the biggest artists in the entire world. Overall, he is beloved by many people, and he continues to produce some huge hits. Consequently, there are a lot of people out there who look up to him and quite frankly, would like to be him. This leads to people wanting to imitate him. As the saying goes, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. However, when it comes to what this Polish television show did recently, that turn of phrase is certainly not the case.

There is a Polish Karaoke competition called Your Face Sounds Familiar. The concept is very simple. Celebrities from the country dress up as famous musicians and perform their songs. Subsequently, the winner gets a bunch of money that they can then donate to charity. In a recent episode, Kuba Szmajkowski decided to get into full blackface in order to perform as Kendrick Lamar. Below, you can see him perform the track “HUMBLE,” which ultimately helped him win the episode.

This Man Tries To Imitate Kendrick Lamar

Overall, this performance led to a lot of backlash on social media. Fans were absolutely confused at why the TV show and its contestant would think this is okay. In the United States, no one would ever think of doing blackface in this way. However, in Europe, these types of transgressions do not carry the same stigma. The same can be said of the n-word, as the contestant also rapped the word while performing.

Social Media Reacts

Down below, you can see all sorts of reactions from Twitter. It was quite the backlash, and the Polish TV show even deleted the clip from Twitter. Although, @wowthatshiphop was able to preserve the clip on his page. This will continue to be a huge controversy for the show, and it remains to be seen how they will handle it, moving forward. Let us know what you think of all this, in the comments section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for more news from around the music world.

Colleen Ballinger Wore What Appears To Be Blackface While Covering Beyoncé In A Resurfaced Video

Colleen Ballinger (also known as her character Miranda Sings) is in a rough spot at the moment. In June, she faced allegations of grooming, which she responded to with a video in which she plays ukulele and addresses the situation through song. The video, as you might expect based on how I just described it, was poorly received.

Now, another apology video could very well be on the way: Today (July 5), an old video of Ballinger resurfaced. It was filmed at a live performance and it shows her singing Beyoncé’sSingle Ladies” on stage, all while wearing dark makeup that looks like blackface.

It’s not clear when exactly the video was filmed, but it was originally uploaded onto the Miranda Sings YouTube channel on February 22, 2018. The video is currently unlisted on the platform, meaning it doesn’t show up on the channel and won’t be shown in search results, but as of this post, it can still be watched here. Based on the full video alone, any potential additional context about the makeup Ballinger had on her face is unclear.

This comes after Ballinger apologized in 2020 for a different video, in which she impersonated Latin women in a video from 14 years earlier. She said in her apology video, “It is not funny, and it is completely hurtful. I am so ashamed and embarrassed that I ever thought this was okay. I was a sheltered teenager who was stupid and ignorant and clearly extremely culturally insensitive. […] Racial stereotypes are not funny, they’re not a joke, and they should never be joked about.”
