R.I.P. The Best New Artist Curse

The Best New Artist Curse(1024X450)

The first winner for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards was Bobby Darin in 1960. In his decades-long career, he had nine top-10 singles, only one of which was about splishing and splashing. The second winner in the category was legendary comedian Bob Newhart (who also, amusingly, won Album of the Year). Other honorees in the 1960s include Robert Goulet (remained popular throughout the rest of his life), José Feliciano (an icon with the rare Christmas song that’s hard to get sick of), and The Beatles (literally The Beatles).

There’s a common perception that winning Best New Artist is a death sentence for an artist / band. I’m not sure this has ever been true (see, again: The Beatles), but it certainly hasn’t been true recently. The last six winners of the welcome-to-the-big-leagues award: Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo, Samara Joy, and Victoria Monét. Those are some huge, critically and/or commercially successful artists (Joy was a niche pick, but since she won over Måneskin, it was the correct one).

In the 2010s, you have Zac Brown Band, Bon Iver, Sam Smith, and Meghan Trainor, which is the first and last time Bon Iver and Meghan Trainor will appear in the same sentence. Say what you will about the “All About That Bass” singer / walking Target commercial, she’s undeniably popular. Going further back to the 2000s, there’s Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, Maroon 5, Amy Winehouse, and Adele. That’s a strong batting average, not always in terms of authorial admiration (Joanna Newsom was snubbed!), but it does debunk the idea that winning Best New Artist dooms an act to following immediate glory with falling off the face of the earth.

So, where does this idea of a Best New Artist curse come from? There’s a trio of possibilities, or more likely, a combination of all three.

-In 1976, Starland Vocal Band released “Afternoon Delight.” It was one of the year’s best-selling singles (it also inspired both a Ron Burgundy sing-along and a regrettable tattoo). But only five years later, the breezy group broke up. “[We] got two of the five Grammys [and] one was Best New Artist,” Starland Vocal Band member Taffy Nivert recalled on an episode of VH1’s nostalgia-bait 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders special. “So that was basically the kiss of death and I feel sorry for everyone who’s gotten it since.”

-Only three artists have taken home The Big Four of Album Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist in the same year: Christopher Cross, Adele, and Billie Eilish. Adele and Eilish are doing just fine, but Cross was never able to replicate the instant success of “Sailing” and, released later that year, the Oscar winning “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do).” He only had one more top-10 hit, 1983’s “Think Of Laura.”

-Best New Artist is notorious for being the only Grammys category with a vacated award. In February 1990, Milli Vanilli won Best New Artist; nine months later, they returned the trophy following a lip-syncing scandal.

The Milli Vanilli scandal, in particular, put a dark cloud over Best New Artist, but you know who won the next year? Mariah Carey. There’s always been peaks and valleys; it’s just that the clunkers stand out more. The Grammys probably want a redo on picking Macklemore and Ryan Lewis over Kendrick Lamar (Macklemore sure would); Esperanza Spalding was a noble if confusing selection over Justin Bieber, Drake, and Florence and the Machine; and fun., who won over Frank Ocean, isn’t even Jack Antonoff’s most famous band. (Although giving him a Grammy proved wise in the long run.)

Here’s the dirty not-so-secret about the Grammys, and every awards show: sometimes they get it “right” (taste is subjective, blah blah blah), often times they get it “wrong.” A lot of stone-cold masterpieces have been named Best Album (Songs In The Key Of Life! Time Out Of Mind! Golden Hour!) but there’s been a lot of bewildering winners, too (River: The Joni Letters? Babel? The First Family?). But you never hear about a Best Album Curse. The curse label is attached to Best New Artist because society is fascinated by the suddenly famous — and, for some, seeing their downfall is equally captivating. It’s also the Grammys attempting to predict the future, rather than honor the present. And recently, with Dua, Megan, and Olivia, they’ve done a better job of avoiding the one-hit-wonders (“Walking In Memphis” still goes hard).

If Chappell Roan, who seems certain to win Best New Artist at the 2025 Grammys (nominations are announced next Friday, November 8), came around 20 years ago, maybe she would have something to worry about. Not anymore.

Sexyy Red Fans Insist Tyla “Robbed” Her Of Best New Artist Title At BET Awards

It’s no secret that it’s been a major year for Sexyy Red. Aside from joining Drake on tour and taking part in several high-profile collabs, the St. Louis-born rapper unleashed her third mixtape In Sexyy We Trust just last month. As expected, it arrived jam-packed with hits. Many fans thought would make her a shoo-in at the BET Awards last night (June 30).

She was nominated for a few different awards, including Best Collaboration, Best Female Artist, and Best New Artist. The latter is what now has her supporters feeling snubbed, however, and they’re making their opinions known. Tyla took home the honor instead of Sexyy, and many feel as though this simply wasn’t fair.

You won in my book,” another says.

Fortunately, it doesn’t appear as though Sexyy is too upset by the whole thing, as she’s gone on to share even more footage from the event. In one of her latest clips, she’s seen throwing around cash on the carpet, providing a heartfelt message to fans in her caption. “I do dis for da trenches da hood btches winnin,” she wrote. An Emotional Victoria Monét Wins The Best New Artist Award At The 2024 Grammys

Each year, music fans and critics alike try their best to guess who will walk away with a trophy during the Grammy Awards. This year was quite exhausting, considering the massive number of categories (98 in total). The 2024 Grammys most nominated acts, like SZA and Victoria Monét are shoo-ins for several major categories. But, the Best New Artist category is elusive.

During this year’s ceremony, Victoria Monét took home the win (as most predicted). The “On My Mama” singer beat out Coco Jones, Gracie Abrams, Fred Again, Ice Spice, Jelly Roll, Noah Kahan, Victoria Monét, and The War And Treaty.

As she headed to the stage to accept the award, she couldn’t help but hold back tears. In her speech, she thanked her collaborators, including producers Deputy, D Mile, and more. When the nominations were first announced, Victoria and her family shared their live reactions to hearing that she secured seven nods (which made her the second most nominated act).

Earlier in the evening, Victoria’s Jaguar II album snagged two wins for Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

Last year’s winner, jazz prodigy Samara Joy, did the honors of handing Victoria the ward this year.

Coco Jones Roasted By Fans For Her Outfit At Spotify Best New Artist Party

In advance of the Grammys this weekend, Spotify hosted a party centered around some of the biggest breakthrough artists in the past year of music. Almost all of the nominees, with the exception of UK garage DJ Fred Again, showed up for the party. That included numerous performances of the breakthrough hits from the Best New Artist Nominees. Ice Spice unpacked her newest single “Think U The Sh*t” to the adoration of the crowd. Country star Jelly Roll was joined by Lainey Wilson for their duet “Save Me,” while Victoria Monet and Noah Kahan both also performed their breakthrough songs.

Coco Jones was also in attendance at the party. Her track “ICU” broke through last year to the tune of 41 million streams on Spotify. The song spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100 eventually peaking at number 62. But much of the attention from fans was on the outfit she chose to wear. The fit paired a black last top with a quilt patterned skirt. Fans quickly identified the look as coming from the Moschino Spring-Summer 2024 runway show. Despite that, plenty of fans had backlash to direct at the outfit. Check out the look and some of the jokes made about it below.

Coco Jones Outfit Gets Attention Online

“Not during black history month??????” one of the top replies to the post reads. “Fire the stylist” another even more direct comment suggests. Even some of the fans who knew the origin of the look weren’t impressed. “I know it’s Moschino, but it gives ‘Everything from IG’” another comment reads.

In the wake of the success of “ICU” Coco recruited an impressive feature for a remix. That was Justin Timberlake, who teamed up for a new version of the track well before starting his new comeback era earlier this year. What do you think of Coco Jones’ Moschino look at the Spotify Best New Artist party? Let us know in the comment section below.

50 Cent & Evanescence’s 2004 Grammys Spat Has Singer Amy Lee Sure Fif Still “Hates [Her] Guts”

As he moves towards his fifties, Curtis Jackson is likely reflecting on the growth in himself since first coming up in the industry. The early years of his career saw 50 Cent acting far more recklessly than he ever does now. For the most part, the Power producer keeps us laughing with his reaction posts on social media these days, but in the mid-2000s, he wasn’t afraid to storm award show stages long before Kanye West ever did.

If you tuned into the 2004 Grammys nearly two decades ago, you may recall the tension in the air when Fif lost the award for Best New Artist to Evanescence. In an interview with the Daily Beast, lead singer Amy Lee spoke about the moment when Jackson joined her and guitarist Ben Moody on stage as she gave her acceptance speech. “50 Cent hates my guts,” she told the outlet, adding herself to the “I Get Money” hitmaker’s long list of enemies.

50 Cent Wasn’t Happy About Losing Artist of the Year

Despite how awkward it all looked on TV at the time, Lee insists the moment “wasn’t that bad” in real life. “He just sort of like, made an appearance. It was like Zoolander when he thought he won,” she joked. While his disdain is obvious, the “Bring Me To Life” singer says she’s never had a chance to discuss Fif being snubbed with him. However, he publicly discussed the moment as recently as 2020, while accepting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “You got the largest debut hip hop album [but] you don’t got no Best New Artist trophy,” the lyricist ranted during his ceremony.

“The Best New Artist, they gave that shit to Evanescence… Can you find fucking Evanescence? I ain’t seen Evanescence since that night. Since that night they gave them the trophy,” he added. Even with the hate, the band has no intentions of getting into a Twitter war with Jackson anytime soon. Amy Lee isn’t the only one who’s still feeling the sting of 50 Cent’s wrath. The New Yorker’s followers will know that he’s had his foot heavily on Sean Combs’ neck following harrowing allegations from Cassie and others in the industry, and he’s not showing signs of letting up anytime soon. Read some of his most recent comments at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

Grammy 2024 Nominees: A Look At Best New Artist

Anticipation for the 2024 Grammys has been at a high ever since the nominations were revealed on November 10. As always, the Best New Artist category is a major award that has fans buzzing. This time, it’s no different, as a lot of impressive acts are up for the prestigious award. From Ice Spice, who dominated 2023, to Victoria Monét, who has been long overdue for recognition.

The title of Best New Artist is also a highly coveted one. Many legendary acts have been the recipient of the award, from the enigmatic Sade to the Songbird Supreme Mariah Carey, the vocal titan Toni Braxton, and the legendary Lauryn Hill. Additionally, more recent champions include Chance The Rapper, and Megan Thee Stallion. The current recipient of the award is jazz extraordinaire, Samara Joy, and it’s anyone’s guess who the new winner will be. Nonetheless, these are the eight stars vying for the honor of Best New Artist.

Victoria Monét

A true Cinderella story, Victoria Monét is finally receiving her flowers for her impeccable artistry. After years of penning lyrics for A-list stars, and releasing lauded EPs, her moment for recognition is finally here. She received widespread acclaim for her glittery debut album, Jaguar II, garnering a whopping seven nominations at the 2024 Grammys. This, of course, includes a Best New Artist nod, much to the excitement of her fans, and fellow artists.

Gracie Abrams

Gracie Abrams has slowly been gaining attention since 2020. Following her two EPs, Minor and This Is What It Feels Like, her debut album, Good Riddance, helped boost her profile significantly. Evidently, the daughter of renowned director, J.J. Abrams has carved out a nice lane for herself. Abrams has also supported her music by performing as the opening act for both Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift. Furthermore, her music is hard to fit into a box, as she experiments with a wide variety of genres.

Fred again…

Fred again… has been widely active since the 2010s. However, he recently came into the spotlight as a lead act in the 2020s. Before then, the English record producer and DJ was heavily behind the scenes. Despite his work on the decks, Fred again… is also an impressive singer and songwriter, as well as a talented multi instrumentalist. He has also covered a plethora of genres besides EDM, including R&B, pop, and indie. In 2022, he earned critical and commercial acclaim for his third studio album, Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9, 2022).

Ice Spice

It’s no surprise that Ice Spice received a Best New Artist nod for the 2024 Grammys. She has been an inescapable act all through 2023, achieving monumental feats early on in her career. The 23-year-old rap star has already collaborated with major names like Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. Besides this, her solo work has also received a ton of praise.

Her relaxed Bronx drill style of rap has been widely received, especially by Generation Z. Ice Spice’s music has also become a huge favorite on social media, particularly TikTok. Additionally, she is the first artist in 2023 to have four songs chart within the top 10 of the Hot 100. In summary, it’s been Ice Spice’s breakout year for more reasons than one, and she definitely deserved the nod.

Jelly Roll

Country music superstar Jason DeFord is popularly known by his stage name, Jelly Roll. He is another act that has been active for a long time, despite his nomination in this category. However, before his successful venture into country music, he was primarily a rap artist. Nonetheless, with an unmistakable Southern Hip Hop sound, he has merged the two genres rather seamlessly. Jelly Roll has been receiving a lot more recognition after a renewed breakthrough in 2022. At the 2024 Grammys, he is also nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Coco Jones

Coco Jones’ journey to mainstream fame has been a long, but reassuring one. After breaking out as a child star on Disney Channel, she fell largely under the radar. During this time, she was releasing music independently. After a long-awaited comeback, the return of Coco Jones was widely received. At the 2024 Grammys, she is up for an impressive five awards. These nominations are undoubtedly boosted by her stellar fifth EP, What I Didn’t Tell You, and the delicious R&B ballad, “ICU.”

Noah Kahan

Noah Kahan rose to fame with his breakthrough single, “Hurt Somebody” in 2017. The folk singer, however, wasn’t nominated for Best New Artist at the time. Fast-forward to his third album, Stick Season, which brought about a renewed popularity surge. The title track of the album also became a viral success, thanks to social media, particularly TikTok.

The War And Treaty

As aforementioned, a Best New Artist nomination can come years after an act’s debut. For the husband and wife duo, Michael and Tanya Trotter, the recognition is long overdue. The pair, who perform under the moniker, The War And Treaty, have been making brilliant soul and folk music for a decade now. At the 2024 Grammys, they are the only non-solo act to be nominated in this category.

Ice Spice Secures Best New Artist Nomination At The Grammys

Ice Spice has been one of the biggest newcomers in hip-hop over the past year. Overall, her track “Munch” has a lot to do with this. Of course, this is the song that ultimately catapulted her into superstardom. However, she has had plenty of other big hits since that time. For instance, she has done some songs with Nicki Minaj. Furthermore, she even got to feature on the remix to Taylor Swift’s track “Karma.” Needless to say, she has come through with a lot of great music, and fans have been loving it.

With awards season upon us, there have been numerous rumblings about what kind of award she would be made privy to. After all, she has done enough to get consideration. Mostly, people have been keeping tabs on the Grammys. These awards are huge for any artist, and Ice Spice, in particular, has a few categories that she could potentially dominate. Ice Spice Could Win Big

She will be competing against Victoria Monet, The War And Treaty, Noah Kahan, Coco Jones, Jelly Roll, Fred again…, and Gracie Abrams. Overall, it is a fairly stacked category, and Ice Spice is in very good company. Whether or not she will win, still remains to be seen. Luckily for her, she was also nominated in the Best Pop-Group Performance category alongside Taylor Swift. This means Spice could come home with a total of two Grammys. Ice Spice Accepts Best New Artist Award At VMAs

Ice Spice received well-deserved recognition last night at the 2023 MTV VMAs. In a televised moment, Ice Spice graciously accepted the Best New Artist award. The rising star had been the clear fan favorite to receive this honor at this year’s award show, which took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on September 12. When Ice Spice’s name was announced, she appeared overwhelmed with joy, basking in a standing ovation as she took center stage. Amid the cheers of the audience, she expressed her profound gratitude for the award and became visibly tearful during her heartfelt acceptance speech.

“Thank you so much. Thank you MTV. Oh my God, this is so cool,” Ice Spice said with a wide smile. “I just want to thank my Munchkins. I love you guys so much. I want to thank my manager James. I want to thank my producer Riot, for making the best music with me.” “Shout out to all the other nominees in this category,” she added. “I want to thank my label 10K and Capitol for always supporting me. And of course God. Without God none of this would be possible!” She concluded her speech with a shoutout to her hometown, saying, “Shout out the Bronx. Period!”

Ice Spice Gets Emotional During Speech

Other nominees in the category included GloRilla, Kaliii, Peso Pluma, PinkPantheress, and Reneé Rapp. Ice Spice’s win in this category signifies an inaugural win, marking the sixth consecutive year that a female artist has won the title of Best New Artist. This makes the sixth consecutive year that a female artist has claimed the Best New Artist award. The previous female winners include Cardi B (2018), Billie Eilish (2019), Doja Cat (2019), Olivia Rodrigo (2021), and Dove Cameron (2022).

Undoubtedly, Ice Spice has had quite the year. The rapper, whose real name is Isis Naija Gaston, became recognized for her track “Munch (Feelin’ U),” which went viral on TikTok and exploded her into stardom. Her popularity soared through collaborations with PinkPantheress on “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” Nicki Minaj on “Princess Diana” and “Barbie Girl,” and Taylor Swift on a “Karma” remix. In January, Ice Spice unveiled her EP, Like…? featuring “Gangsta Boo” alongside Lil TJay. It was that collaboration that marked her debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This achievement is truly remarkable, especially considering that Ice Spice is still classified as a new artist, and all of her recent successes have materialized within just one year.

Arlo Parks Delivered A Woozy Cover Of Kaytranada And Syd’s ‘You’re The One’

Spotify loves to give rising artists a look with their Spotify Singles program, and this year they’re highlighting Best New Artist nominees at the Grammys in an interesting way. The premise is that each Best New Artist nominee will do a cover from the discography of a past nominee, adding their own twist and getting their name out into the ether again, whether they win or lose on the big night. For instance, earlier this month Finneas covered Bon Iver’s “Flume” for his contribution. But keep in mind, losing in this category is just as likely to predict a fruitful career as winning in it!

Anyway, Arlo Parks is a nominee this year, and she decided to cover Kaytranada and Syd’s “You’re The One” for her contribution to Spotify Singles. “Why it was such a joy to record my Spotify Singles session in the studio, I felt somehow part of the legend,” Parks said in a statement about the cover. “Syd’s voice in ‘You’re The One’ always had this effortless beauty to it in my eyes and I wanted to cover it to expose the romance and yearning behind the lyrics. It was an honour to be able to sing my new song ‘Softly’ too, to highlight the beginning of a new and beautiful chapter in my career and celebrate being nominated for Best New Artist.”

Check out Arlo’s cover below, and tune into the Grammys this Sunday, April 3, to see who picks up a win in this coveted category.
