Happy Birthday To Philly Rap Legend Beanie Sigel!

Born on this date in 1974 in the City of Brotherly Love, Dwight Grant aka Beanie Sigel aka Beans morphed into a icon in the Philly Hip Hop scene as the leader of the now defunct Roc-A-Fella Records’ State Property. Even with all of his legal troubles and the untimely split of the Roc, Beanie is still regarded as one of the best emcees of his era and one of the very few who lives what he speaks in the booth.

With six solo albums, three State Property collabos and four silver screen blockbuster appearances, it’s difficult to argue that Beans has not had a successful career. Anyone who was able to hold Hova’s attention for more than one album has some obvious skills to match his street bravado.

Happy born day to Beans and many more in the future!

Consequence Recalls Beanie Sigel Protecting Kanye West Against Chain Snatchers

A story that Beanie Sigel first told over a decade ago is receiving a co-sign from Consequence. The rapper and producer recently caught up with The Art of Dialogue to revisit highlights of his career. Within the conversation also arrived behind-the-scenes tales of Cons and his peers—including one about Sigel saving Ye from getting his chain snatched.

“Ye hit me the same night in the situation with the girl. I think it might have been a chick named Sydney or some sh*t like that. He took her out,” said Cons. “You know, n*gga one-two’ing. Listen, n*gga running around with a Roc-A-Fella chain on. You know what that sh*t do for your p*ssy rate?”

Cons then shared that the chain West was wearing came from Dame Dash. “He had the sh*t off of Dame neck, so he had the sh*t with the Cuban in the sh*t, ice just shining,” he recalled. “N*ggas seen that man in there and was like, ‘Yo!’ N*ggas was at the Chelsea Diner on 23rd street. N*ggas hit n*ggas with the motherf*ckin’ Raekwon and Ghostface skit. ‘Word? What do we have here?’”

“I was in Queens. I woulda had to get on the train with the gun and all that sh*t.” Cons also said. However, he was glad that there was a nearby recording studio. “But you know, fortunately, Baseline wasn’t but five blocks away. They came over and held a n*gga down. I always f*cked with them n*ggas for that sh*t. They ain’t have to.”

When Sigel first delivered the tale all those years ago, he suggested West “feel threatened.” The State Property star said he told the wanna-be theives that “nothing was going to go down” as long as he was there. It’s always good to have friends who have your back. Check out Consequence retelling the story above.

Beanie Sigel Calls Dame Dash The ‘Malcolm X’ Of Hip-Hop

Beanie Sigel Reflects on Time His Relationship With JAY-Z Left Him "Crushed"

In a recent interview with Personal Party Podcast, Beanie Sigel explained why he thinks that Rocafella Records co-founder Dame Dash is the “Malcolm X” of hip-hop.

In the interview, Beanie showed nothing but praise for Dash and likened him to the civil rights activist due to the care he showed artists over the years.

“Dame would be like the Malcolm X of Hip Hop,” Beanie said. “No bullshit, ‘cause I’m trying to think of one word. You can’t describe Dame with one word. But when I see Dame, he like X. He like Malcolm.”

Beans was integral to Rocafella’s early days and dominance throughout the 90s and 2000s, contributing to hits like “You, Me, Him and Her,” “What We Do,” “Roc the Mic,” and “Flipside.”

During the split between Jay-Z and Dame, the latter had publicly claimed that Beanie was leaving Roc-A-Fella to join him at his new label with Kareem Burke. However, his group, State Property, opted to stay with Roc-A-Fella, leading Beans to question their loyalty. He later said that he was signing with Dame and Burke because he had a better relationship with them than he did with Jay.

“I’ve never been around Jay on an off day. It ain’t like I made a choice of running with Dame and Biggs or ‘Dame and Biggs held me down through my whole trial.’ It’s not that. I would be a sucker if I said I [signed with the Damon Dash Music Group] because they did that for me. It’s love. You see how we chillin’ now, this ain’t about no business,” he said to MTV in 2005.
