Kanye West Reportedly Has A New Beef — This Time With Backstreet Boys Over An Uncleared Sample

Oh, Kanye. Even when Mr. West is doing the one thing we actually want him to do, it’s like he goes out of his way to upset someone. During his recent listening event in Miami, one of the songs he played from Vultures, his and Ty Dolla Sign’s upcoming joint album, samples Backstreet Boys’ 1997 hit, “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).” However, according to TMZ, Kanye never cleared the sample. Sources connected to the ’90s boy band (I guess they’re a man band now?) say he didn’t clear it — although, as per usual, TMZ’s pretty vague about just what that means.

After all, Kanye may not have had to go through the band to get a sample (or an interpolation) cleared, just the rights holders — who may have thought it was worth it for access to any potential sales success the song/album may have (Kanye is still pretty famous, after all). However, the band’s members themselves may not enjoy being connected to an artist who’s been out of the spotlight for the past 12 months due to making inflammatory remarks that many commentators have categorized as antisemitic.

Those remarks have already cost Kanye greatly; he’s no longer classified as a billionaire after losing lucrative endorsement deals with Adidas and other companies, his bank accounts were publicly closed, and his big idea for a massive, stadium-sized Vultures rollout was downsized when he couldn’t find a venue willing to take him. And just in case it seemed like the past year was enough time for him to learn his lesson, during that Miami listening, he straight up donned a Ku Klux Klan hood, taking the “Black Skinhead” motif to its most extreme interpretation in his ongoing efforts to stir the pot without actually adding any flavor (because it’s tasteless, you see).

So, although he may have permission to use the interpolation of “Everybody,” that doesn’t mean the band is getting paid for it nor do they seem happy about it (and recent history suggests he might not have cleared the clip in the first place, either way).

Backstreet Boy Accused of Raping Autistic 17-Year-Old Fan in 2001

Backstreet Boy Nick Carter has been accused of raping a woman, then 17 years old, after a concert in Tacoma, Washington, in 2001.

In a complaint filed in Clark County, Nevada, Shannon Ruth, who is autistic and suffers from cerebral palsy, had alleged that Carter invited her onto his tour bus when she was waiting for an autograph.  There, she claims, he gave her a strange drink he called “VIP Juice,” then took her to the bathroom, exposed himself, and ordered her to perform sexual acts on him.  She claims he then took her to the back of the tour bus, where he raped her.

Ruth further claims that Carter infected her with HPV, a sexually transmitted disease, and when she said she would tell people what he’d done, he threatened that he’d ruin her life, no one would believe her, and she would go to jail.

In a statement, Carter’s attorney described Ruth’s claims as “legally meritless” and “entirely untrue” and claimed that she had been “manipulated into making false allegations” against Carter, which had “changed repeatedly and materially over time.”

Ruth’s lawyer claims to have spoken to three other women that Carter allegedly sexually assaulted and infected with HPV.   In 2017, singer Melissa Schuman accused Carter of having sexually assaulted her in 2003. However, the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office did not investigate because the statute of limitations on her claim had expired.

In light of these allegations, ABC has canceled an upcoming holiday special, “A Very Backstreet Holiday.”

Drake Joined Backstreet Boys On Stage To Perform ‘I Want It That Way’ Because Why Not?

As a result of being one of music’s biggest stars, Drake has been able to do a lot of random and interesting things in his life. He created the Sanctuary Basketball League (SBL) that runs games in his mansion, and so far, he’s a 2-time champion. He threw a dinner party on the 50-yard line at SoFi Stadium after he won artist of the decade. In his latest act, Drake took to a concert stage in his hometown of Toronto to perform with a legendary pop band: Backstreet Boys.

Drake accompanied the band for a performance of “I Want It That Way” at a recent concert in Toronto. However, before they began the song, Drake shared how impactful “I Want It That Way” was for him. “I really wanted to come out here tonight — I saw my brother at a restaurant the other night, and I was telling him that when I was in high school — I wasn’t even in high school yet, it was junior high and I was 13 years old,” Drake said. “I was an awkward kid. I was in love with this girl at the time…and she paid me no mind. But at 13 years old, I had a thing called a bar mitzvah…and at my bar mitzvah, for the first time in my life, this girl who I was in love with came up to me while one of the greatest songs of all time played.”

He continued, “She asked me if I would dance with her to the song. It was the first time I ever felt acknowledged — like I had a shot at being cool. The song that she wanted to dance with me to was one of the greatest songs of all time — it’s one of the greatest songs ever made.”

You can watch clips from Drake and Backstreet Boys’ performance together in the posts above.
