Despite season 3 of Donald Glover’s hit show Atlanta having not aired yet, an end for the critically acclaimed show has been set. FX CEO John Landgraf revealed Thursday that the show’s fourth season would be it’s last.
John Landgraf said that the fourth and final season of Atlanta will be released sometime this fall. “The fourth and final season [of Atlanta] is slated to debut in the same manner this fall,” Landgraf said. After announcing that the show will end, he went on to say that the upcoming seasons will be everything fans love about Atlanta and to “expect the unexpected.”
Shortly after it was announced that season for of Atlanta would be the show’s last, Donald Glover came out and defended the decision to end the show so soon. Glover spoke at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour where he defended the decision.
“Death is natural,” Glover said. “I feel like when the conditions are right for something, they happen, and when the conditions aren’t right, they don’t happen. I don’t feel any longevity. Because then things start to get weird.”
Glover added, “The story was always supposed to be what it was. And the story, it really was us,” he continued. “Everybody in that writers’ room, everybody on set. It really was what we were going through and what we talked about. … I think it ends perfectly.”
Glover has been extremely busy in the last couple of years. Just last year, Glover inked an 8-figure deal with Amazon Studios. As a part of his new deal, Glover was able to finish both seasons of Atlanta back to back, which will release later this year.

The most recent episode of FX’s brilliant comedy Atlanta aired in May 2018. It was a different time: Drake had the number one song in the country, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was dominating the box office, and the world was terrible.
OK, maybe things haven’t changed that much, but it does feel like season two happened a lifetime ago. Do you remember what happened in the season two finale? I didn’t until looking it up (it involves a gun, a backpack, and Paper Boi telling Earn, “You my family”), and then I remembered why Atlanta was Uproxx‘s best show of 2018.
Thankfully, after a nearly four-year break, Atlanta is coming back in March. Ahead of the premiere, FX released a new teaser for season three that has Earn (Donald Glover), Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), Darius (LaKeith Stanfield), and Van (Zazie Beetz) stuck in a nightmare of capitalism. Over what sounds like a corny cover of “So Fresh, So Clean” by ATL legends Outkast, Paper Boi says, “These products scare me.” Thumbs up.

The last new episode of Atlanta aired in May 2018. Since then, Donald Glover has played Lando Calrissian and voiced Simba; Brian Tyree Henry joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Lakeith Stanfield has been nominated for an Oscar; and Zazie Beetz has excelled in everything from Deadpool 2 to Joker to The Harder They Fall. A third season of Atlanta (Uproxx‘s best show of 2018) was not guaranteed with the cast’s busy schedule, but it’s happening — and there’s a teaser to prove it.
On Halloween, Glover tweeted a link to a site called Gilga, which features a clock, the user’s location, and a link to the teaser. It can be only viewed at certain times (“WHILE UNDER CONSTRUCTION, GILGA IS A ‘NITE-SITE’ OPERATIONAL HOURS ARE 8PM-3AM,” it currently reads), but the footage can be viewed elsewhere. Earn, Darius, and Vanessa are nowhere to be seen and there’s no dialogue (Sun Ra’s “It’s After the End of the World” provides the score), but Paper Boi appears at the end sitting at a table. “I align the seasons I think, to me, like Kanye records,” Glover said back in 2019. “I feel like this is our Graduation. This is probably our most accessible but also the realest — an honest version of it — and I feel like the most enjoyable, like the third album. We were all on iMessage together and kind of talking about it, and I think people were really hungry to like beat ourselves, which is great.”
Atlanta, which filmed in Europe for seasons 3 and 4, will premiere in 2022.
