Spotify And Apple Music Payments To Artists Would Increase Significantly Under A New Congressional Bill

Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have made music consumption easier than ever. The issue, though, lies with how artists are paid by the platforms. In short, there are often complaints. Now, there are lawmakers who want to do something about that.

Yesterday (March 6), congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and congressman Jamaal Bowman (founder of the Congressional Hip Hop Task Force) introduced the Living Wage For Musicians Act. Per a post on Tlaib’s website, the legislation, created in partnership with United Musicians And Allied Workers (UMAW), aims “to compensate artists and musicians more fairly at a penny per stream when their music plays on streaming services.”

The post goes on to note, “Currently, musicians make tiny fractions of a penny per stream, while streaming has grown to represent 84% of recorded music industry revenue in the US. Spotify, the world’s largest streaming service, pays rights-holders an average per-stream royalty of $0.003, which means it takes artists more than 800,000 monthly streams to equal a full-time $15/hour job.”

So, essentially, Tlaib and Bowman hope to more than triple the current per-stream royalty currently paid out by Spotify.

More specifically, the post explains:

“The Living Wage for Musicians Act would tax providers’ non-subscription revenues and add a small fee to the price of music streaming subscriptions. DSPs like Spotify offering interactive music streaming services would pass their taxed revenues and royalties to a non-profit collection and distribution fund, that would in turn pay artists in proportion to their monthly streams. The bill includes a maximum payout per track, per month, in order to generate more sustainable income for a broader and more diverse set of artists beyond the world’s most popular performers. […] By creating a fund that directly compensates recording artists and musicians, the bill will allow vastly more artists to achieve a living wage from music, enabling them to pay rent, raise a family, buy a home, and invest in their future.”

When Will Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign’s ‘Vultures 2’ Come Out On Apple Music?

In January, Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign announced that their joint project Vultures had been reimagined as three complete albums after several delays to the original release. At the time, they gave three new release dates: February 9, March 8, and April 5. With the first part out already and the second part scheduled for release this New Music Friday, when can fans expect it to hit DSPs like Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal?

With most releases, the answer would be 9 pm PT or midnight ET tonight, but with Kanye West, release dates are more like vague suggestions than hard deadlines. Fans watched the first Vultures release date come and go in December without a hint of the new album, with Kanye insinuating that it might have been Nicki Minaj’s fault for not clearing a verse he asked for at the last minute. A second release date in late December also disappointed fans — but didn’t surprise them — and the third release date, the aforementioned February 9, also nearly passed without the album coming out.

However, while Kanye did manage to get the album out on the day (if not at the expected time), it was not without issues. The album was pulled from Apple Music by its distributor, FUGA, which issued a statement claiming that Kanye had only gotten the album through its service through skullduggery and that it was working with DSPs to have it removed entirely. While it’s still available on Spotify, the song “Good (Don’t Die)” was removed after Donna Summer’s estate filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement over an authorized interpolation of her song “I Feel Love.”

So, Vultures 2 might not even come to Apple Music, unless Kanye has a contingency plan, and even if it does, it almost certainly won’t be at midnight. The rest remains to be seen.

Fresh from the release of his 11th studio album INSANO, Kid Cudi invites Zane Lowe into his home to discuss the project, his retirement from music, his relationship with Ye, and more.

Speaking on INSANO Cudi tells Zane, “I think that this album is a triumph, because I’ve seen a lot of people saying, yo, you sound like you can feel the happiness in the music. You can feel the joy radiating. Every note, every verse. There’s no Kid Cudi album that sounds like this. Can you imagine? 11 albums, and I was able to still do something new.”

As he nears his 40th birthday, this wide-ranging conversation sees Cudi reflect on his career, how he’s inspired the next generation of rappers, and why he loves working with Lil Yachty.

When speaking about his relationship with ‘Ye, Cudi says, “It’s usually one person does something where the other one has to defend themselves, but usually you like to keep these things private, but sometimes they can come out.”

He added, “I think in my situation it’s a little bit more complicated. Me personally, I just pray on it and walking the light and the new Scott is not angry at anyone. The new Scott doesn’t have beef with anyone, and I just try to focus on that.”

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Boast “VULTURES 1” Success Without Apple Music Support

Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s VULTURES 1 is still getting plenty of play, despite how streaming platforms were not so quick to promote it. Moreover, Ye published a video on his Instagram Story of his full-length collaborator remarking on how Apple Music never featured them on most of their promotional features on their page for new releases, which they typically do for almost all big releases. Yet “CARNIVAL” with Rich The Kid and Playboi Carti is the highest-charting song on Apple Music right now. Given that the album went No. 1 on Billboard for another week after its release, this consistent commercial success is unsurprising.

However, it’s also important to note that Kanye West is not only one of the biggest artists alive -– and thus needs no promotion to make a splash -– but that the duo devised a promotional strategy of their own. Their Vultures listening parties across the U.S. and Europe netted them heaps of cash and built up the album across a couple of months of hype. In addition, we have Ye’s antisemitic crusade to consider as a massive and sadly unfinished story that boosted this collaboration’s profile. It’s very understandable that streaming services didn’t promote it at every turn, but equally unsurprising is how their notoriety and reach sidestepped that.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Flaunt Their No. 1 Despite Apple Music’s Lack Of Promo

Another factor to consider is that across February, whether or not you could listen to VULTURES 1 depended on which streamer you used and what day you tried to play it. The album disappeared from Spotify and Apple Music multiple times thanks mostly to distribution difficulties, as well as sample clearance issues that already plagued the release. Whether or not you find its commercial success in spite of this to be impressive or a sad reality probably depends on whether you buy into the controversies attached to it. Regardless, Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign fought their way in with loads of fans behind them.

Meanwhile, with two more installments set for release (which we aren’t holding our breath on considering the chaotic launch of the first one) and a Ye solo album facing conflicting reports, who knows what they’ll do in March? VULTURES 2, plus 3 in April, could be better than the first one, or it could be just as divisive. But odds are that whatever long-form effort they drop will still hit big. How To See Your Apple Music Recap For January 2024

Apple Music
Getty Image

A fun end-of-year tradition most music streaming services have is a recap of everything users listened to over the previous 12 months. The bummer about it, though, is that it only comes once a year. Starting in early 2024, though, Apple Music introduced a monthly version of its Replay feature, so users can get data on their listening habits year-round.

If you’re an Apple Music user who would like to know how to use the new monthly Replay, read on.

How To See Your Apple Music Recap For January 2024

The process is pretty simple: visit replay.music.apple.com, log in with your Apple ID, and there you go.

As for what the new Replay feature offers, an Apple Music support page explains:

  • “Get insights every month: Once you’re eligible, you can see your top songs, artists, and albums every month based on play count and time spent listening. And you can see any milestones you’ve reached listening to music.
  • See your year-end Replay: At the end of the calendar year, you can see your top songs, artists, albums, genres, playlists, and stations, along with play counts, totals, and the time that you’ve spent listening to them.
  • Play your year-end highlight reel: Celebrate your year in music with an audio and visual recap of the music that you listened to the most.
  • Share insights: Tap the Share button to share your personalized listening insights in a message and on social media.”

That page offers more detail beyond that, so check it out here to learn more.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign’s Apple Music Bio Mentions Anthony Fantano, Fans Think It’s A Hack

As if Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign didn’t face enough issues already with releasing their album Vultures on Apple Music, it seems like someone hacked their artist bio. Either that, or they wanted to make the best troll artist description they could come up with while taking shots at the Internet’s busiest music nerd. Moreover, on their artist page on the streaming platform under the moniker ¥$, their bio is a bizarre and most likely fake Q&A excerpt that goes over some curious claims, including references to music critic Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop. Hats off to whichever fan was cheeky enough to include this and do so successfully, or to Ye and Ty Dolla to taking very legitimate criticism of their work (particularly the former’s) with some sense of humor.

We’ll include the whole bio here in case it really is fake and Apple Music takes it down soon. Before that, this is notable because Anthony Fantano called Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures “unreviewable” for its quality and the antisemitic background behind it. That caused an absolute uproar online from Ye stans and melonheads alike. Whether you agree or not, it’s fair to say that things definitely went a little too far in folks’ responses to this.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Raise Eyebrows With Likely Hacked Apple Music Bio

“In the artist’s words:,” Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s bio begins. “‘Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.’ ¥$’s first music experience as a group was listening to our second single ‘Cool beat 1’ and working on the critically acclaimed song ‘Back to Me.’” Also, the bio asks the duo their three all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and it mentions The College Dropout, Vultures, and Featuring Ty Dolla $ign. Here’s the first Fantano reference, made when “answering” a question about their favorite song of theirs on the platform. “‘CARNIVAL’ is the most popular Ye Dolla song by far. As stated by the YouTube famous music reviewer Anthony Fantano stated, ‘This song is absolutely amazing and is a shining light in Ye and Ty’s respective catalogues.’” If the backlash didn’t spoil it, he never said this in the first place.

Meanwhile, here’s how the “bio” closes out. The bio “asks”: “‘What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?’” Their “response”: “For one, being the #1 collaboration album worldwide in more countries than ever know. Secondly, being the best selling and most successful independent album on streaming platforms, and third being the first album to be known Unreviewable by Midtano.” Yikes. Check out their Apple Music page to see if it’s still there. Otherwise, log back into HNHH for the latest news and updates on Kanye West, Ty Dolla Sign, and Anthony Fantano.

Apple Music subscribers were in for a treat, as the streaming platform put out a new monthly recap feature of their popular feature Apple Music Replay. The first one dropped for January 2024, allowing people to see who their top artists were, as well as their top song and album picks. It is sort of like Spotify Wrapped or Apple Music’s year-end Replay but on a month-to-month basis.

For those looking to access their Apple Music Replay from January 2024, here’s what to know.

How To View Apple Music Replay For 2024

To access the Apple Music Replay, users can find their individualized stats by visiting replay.music.apple.com. This should direct you to both Apple Music if you’re on a Mac, or to the app on your phone, allowing you to then view who and what you listened to the most. (You also must be signed in to receive the feature.)

Much like external sites like Last.FM, which tracks how many times you listen to a particular artist or song, Apple Music has now added how many minutes a user played each of their specific top picks.

Considering the January replay arrived at nearly the end of February, it might be on a bit of a varied schedule in terms of when they choose to release the user recaps.
