Big Sean Talks “Better Me Than You” & Why He’s No Longer Trying To Prove Himself

Detroit’s very own golden boy, Big Sean, has returned with a new album, and fans can’t seem to get enough. The celebrated rapper delivered Better Me Than You last Friday (August 30) after a slight delay, and as usual, the project has been dissected by Hip Hop enthusiasts worldwide. Sean is known for putting his heart, soul, and thoughts into his rhymes, and Better Me Than You highlights a new era of maturation. Not only has been working on this body of work for sometime, it also ushers in his next rollout: a book that Big Sean says will arrive at the top of the year.

In his recent sit-down with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, Big Sean revealed why he returned with “something substantial” with the release of Better Me Than You. “I was inspired to have fun, first and foremost,” he said. “But, I was also inspired by just the events that were going on in my life and the experiences that… You know, becoming a dad. I am a person who is very conscious. Every morning, I like to get my meditation on, I like to try and figure out how I can offer something to the world. And this album is just definitely me doing that in my own way. I was inspired enough to also write a book as well, so I’m writing a book that comes out in January.”

Further, Sean spoke about sharing his experiences through literature and music, learning from others, not feeling as if he has to prove himself anymore, his motivations in life, fatherhood, and why at times, he feels as if his latest album isn’t finished. Read a few standout moments from Big Sean’s conversation with Zane Lowe below.

On Viewing Himself More As A Student Than Teacher

Yeah. Well, I don’t really look at myself as a teacher. I do look at myself more of just sharing what we go through, I think we all have a lot of information to give. And I have been so, I guess the word is blessed. I’ve been so fortunate to be around a lot of my heroes in all different fields, spiritually, musically, even some of my favorite athletes ever. It’s like, I learned a lot from so many people, and so many great practices to get to where you want to be in your life, and how to live a life to where you attracting a life you really desire, and the one that you can benefit from the most, because we’re only here for such a short amount of time

On Embracing Low Moments In Life As Lessons

What is really important to me is the progression of myself and passing that on to my family and to my audience or to whoever I can, and enjoying your life, man. Because, if we’re here for such a short amount of time, this may be our only time as souls to progress ourselves, and to learn, and to go through the ups and downs. That’s kind of like why, lately, when I do going through those, you go through the highs and the lows. And when I’m going through the lows, I kind of been learning to embrace them more, because that’s where the growth happens. And that’s where, once it’s all said and done, we may not be able to go through that again, because we may not need it. We may just be beings of light and unplugged to the next part of ourselves. And so I really been looking at life a lot differently, but I also still been having fun with it.

On Not Competing Or Trying To Prove Himself

And it’s not that I’m trying to prove myself. I’m really trying to improve myself. So, it’s kind of a little bit of a different… Same word in there. I think Jhené [Aiko] said one time, “You’re not trying to compete, you’re trying to complete.” And it’s like, that’s really what I’m on. I’m not really… There’s nothing wrong with competing, but where I’m at, I’m just trying to do me, and express myself, and express the different sides of me. And I’m not a monk or nothing like that. I’m just somebody who I’m just living a life of sustaining, and doing what I got to do to get by, and doing what I got to do to thrive, and to be a great dad, and to be a great son, and to be a great partner, and to be a great team member, you know what I mean? So, to me, this album is just a reflection of that, and it’s still one of the most important parts of life is having fun, though, bro.

On Why He Doesn’t Necessarily Know If His Album Is Finished

Zane Lowe: Was it hard to finish?

Big Sean: Well, I don’t even know if it is finished, man, to be real with you, because it was hard to just stop and be like, “Man, let’s just start giving it to the world.” Because yeah, I had ideas that I was still working on, ideas that me and Alchemist were still cooking songs… There was a Twenty88 song that I thought fit well on my album that just didn’t get all the way finished in time. So, hopefully, I can get these things done, and if not—

Zane Lowe: So how did we get an album out of this, then? I mean, who or what prompted you to finally finish this record and be able to at least close the loop on this collection of songs?

Big Sean: Well, the thing was, I had been putting out music, and I was just like, “Man, I don’t want these songs that I put out to get stale. I don’t want to keep pushing it back.” I just kind of want to move forward. It’s been years and years since I put some music out, and I also didn’t want to rely on other people as well, you know what I mean? I didn’t want to wait, in that sense. So, it’s like I’m at a point in my life where I just let things happen when they’re supposed to happen. And I embraced that, and I embraced the other guy’s time. And so I just felt like it was time. And when I did IG Live, I was super emotional about it, because I had just decided then, a few days ago, that I was going to put my album out this week. And it was a real human moment for me, because I was very tired. I just had had COVID, and I was just going through a lot, man. And I was just thinking about all of the advice that when I was on the phone with my mom the night before, she gave me, and she was just like, “Baby, just go.”

Victoria Monét joins Eddie Francis on Apple Music 1 to talk about her experience writing “SOS (Sex on Sight)” featuring Usher. They dive into the process of how this dream collaboration came to be and Victoria teases that more music from Usher is coming very soon.

The two also discuss Victoria’s very successful year, which included GRAMMYs, record-breaking success from her single “On My Mama,” and more. Victoria teases a deluxe version of JAGUAR II and a new era on the way.

When Francis asked Monet about the Usher collaboration, she mentioned another unreleased song that the two have together.

“It’s coming in the future. I don’t know when, but there’s another song,” Monet added. “So we were working together on that song. So he came by the studio to work more on that. And when he got there, I was working on SOS, but I just had the hook only. So he was like, “Let me hear what you’re working on.” I was like, “Okay.” Nervous. So I play it, and then after the hook goes off, he starts mumbling a melody. I was like, “Hmm.” And me and DJ Camper, the producer, looked at each other and we were like, “Do you want to just go in? Maybe just try some stuff?” So he goes in the booth and starts this rap part, and then he comes out and we write a few lyrics to that. And then he has to go, he’s like jet-setting somewhere else. And then he finishes his parts in Atlanta. We decide like… We were like, at one point, “Do we do both of these songs or do we have to choose one? What’s the protocol?” But it just felt so special and so organic so that we just were like, “Let’s rock with both.” Camper got his horn player on it. We just did final touches and everything, and here it is. So I’m excited.”

Latto Celebrates Earning Her First Apple Music No. 1 With “Sugar Honey Iced Tea”

Yesterday, Latto unleashed her third studio album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea. So far, the project has been well-received, with many calling it her best work yet. She’s even been dubbed the “female Drake,” as fans note similarities between their sounds. As fans continue to sound off about the project on social media, Latto has taken to X to celebrate her success.

The Atlanta hitmaker replied to a post by Chart Data, which announced that the album has earned her a No. 1 spot on the Apple Music album chart for the first time in her career. “Number one, we did it yo!” she shouts in a clip, popping a bottle of champagne. Fans certainly can’t blame Latto for being excited, especially considering all the praise she’s receiving online.

Latto Pops A Bottle Amid New Album Success

Amid the flood of compliments, however, some listeners have taken the opportunity to point out some apparent jabs on the album. Fans think she took a shot at Ice Spice on “S/O To Me,” for example, with the line “Ice is just water when it melts.” This is no surprise considering the two femcees have been dissing each other for a while. Nicki Minaj, Coi Leray, and more are also suspected to be on the receiving end of some shade.

While listeners still have plenty to digest following the release of Latto’s album, it’s not the only new music they’ve heard from her as of late. Drake also took fans by surprise by delivering 100 gigabytes of previously unreleased material earlier this week. This included a track featuring Latto, “Housekeeping Knows,” which is part of a 100 GIGS three-pack that just hit streaming services today. What do you think of Latto’s new album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea? What about her going No. 1 on the Apple Music album chart for the first time in her career? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Asap Rocky Explained Why Any Leaked ‘Don’t Be Dumb’ Songs Won’t Appear On The Official Release

It is gradually becoming more challenging for artists to keep their projects locked away. Many recording artists, including SZA and now Asap Rocky, have found themselves fighting off music pirates.

Still, the “Highjack” rapper is moving full steam ahead with the release of his highly-anticipated album, Don’t Be Dumb. During his recent appearance on Apple Music’s New Music Daily, Asap Rocky addressed the recent leaks. In the chat with Zane Lowe, Asap Rocky confessed that any things floating around online won’t make the final project.

“And once it’s leaked it’s just like, nah, it’s not on the project,” he said. “I might perform it here or there, but it’s leaked. It is what it is. It’s out already. A lot of these records didn’t make it because they got leaked at some point.”

Asap Rocky doubled down on his decision while shaming the leakers. “It’s very important and special if it makes it on the album,” he said. “Most of the songs that I usually perform and sh*t like that, motherf*ckers leak it.”

Back in June, Asap Rocky seemingly confirmed the project’s release date. If plans haven’t changed, fans should expect it at the end of the month.

Watch Zane Lowe’s full interview with Asap Rocky for Apple Music above.

Don’t Be Dumb is due on 8/30 via ASAP Worldwide, Polo Grounds, RCA. You can find more info here.

Action Bronson Talks To Apple Music About His “Beef” With David Schwimmer And Getting Covid From Mel Gibson

unnamed 75

Action Bronson sits down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 to talk about his new album Johann Sebastian Bachlava The Doctor. In the wide-ranging interview, Action Bronson talks about recently getting arrested in France, how he got Covid from Mel Gibson, his “beef” with David Schwimmer, and his favorite Olympics moment.

He also shares lessons learned from fatherhood, his painting and where his artistic inspiration comes from, and what made him start to prioritize his health.

Action Bronson Tells Apple Music About Recently Getting Arrested In France…

Action Bronson: I went on vacation for 10 days. In Paris, I got locked up with my fucking driver. I was going to get pastries. My family were leaving. And I take him, we  go nine in the morning to my man Bertrand’s spot Tapestry. He had a box waiting for me. Fucking, we get caught at the light. There’s two cops over there. They’re talking to the driver. The driver’s wearing a suit and he has some sort of pin, and they questioned him about the pin. And apparently the pin is like, you work for the president. And they’re not having it because the Olympics are coming. So they pull them out, they question him. They arrested him for impersonating a police officer. They bring me in. They refuse to speak English, but they still leave me with the phone. I’m just like, “Yo, bro, I’m just trying to get to my family.”

Zane Lowe: I got my pastries.

Action Bronson: I didn’t get the pastries yet. So three hours. My man has to make the phone call. Somehow I text him, he calls them. He’s like, “Yo,” he calls the precinct. “He has the key to the city in Lyon, the mayor. This is going to cause a scandal, blah, blah, blah.” Somehow they fucking let me out. Three hours later I got the pastries, but my family had already left, so I was very angry. But there was no consolation except the pastry. I was just fucking pissed. I’m just saying, that’s how I started the tour.

Action Bronson Talks To Apple Music About What Changed To Make Him Start Prioritizing His Health…

It was actually shame. It was a shame that I had let myself get there, because I’ve always been an athlete. I was like, “What the fuck is going on? What is this?” Wearing fucking mumu shirts. I still like a good comfortable shirt, but my Lord, I was like, “What is this?” And having a brand new baby, you want to be around. I want to be around forever.

Action Bronson Tells Apple Music The Story About How Mel Gibson Gave Him Covid…

Zane Lowe: Mel Gibson did give you COVID.

Action Bronson: That’s a fact. I mean, I don’t like to tell this story, but I will. That bastard gave it to me for sure. It was at UFC, McConor Gregory. I mean, pah, McConor Gregory… Conor McGregor and fucking Dustin Poirier part three. This was the COVID days. He turned around, we were the only ones there at the prelims. There was no one there. It was just me and him. He turned, I was sat here. He sat in front. He turned around and kept saying shit to me in my face, like commenting on the punch and commenting on the kick. And then everyone got it. Me and four other guys got it.

Ebro Darden Doesn’t Know How Drake Recovers From Feud With Kendrick Lamar

Ebro Darden doesn’t know how Drake’s career can recover from taking a loss in his feud with Kendrick Lamar. He discussed where the Toronto rapper can go from here during a show for Apple Music, explaining that he doesn’t feel Drake can act tough anymore.

“I don’t know how Drake comes back,” Ebro began. “I don’t know what his sound is gonna be. Everybody’s like, ‘What got taken from him?’ How does Drake ever talk greasy on a song like you about to do something tough after? Kendrick called you out for coopting the entire Atlanta thing, so what is your slang now? What are you saying now?”

From there, he described how the situation still presents an opportunity for Drake to put on for his hometown. Ebro continued: “But also, there’s an opportunity in that because now it is time. A lot of people in Toronto was like, ‘Toronto got a sound.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, in this battle if Drake would’ve said, ‘You know what, like the Avengers, it’s Toronto versus everybody.” What would that have sounded like? We know when we heard Mustard on the beat, we knew what that was. What is that for them? When it’s time to wage war. Not when it’s time to make a Diddy bop. Not when it’s time to fall in love. Not when it’s time to go on vacation.” Check out the full comments below.

Metro Boomin Plans To Stop Releasing His Albums On Streaming Services

Metro Boomin is the most famous producer in hip-hop at the moment. He kicked off the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle, scoring a number one single and dropping a viral instrumental in the process. Both of his studio albums have gone platinum. He even dropped an acclaimed soundtrack to a Sony superhero film in 2023. He’s a recognizable brand, which is why he wants to make control over the distribution of his music. Namely, the use of digital streaming services.

Metro Boomin took a screenshot of a X (formerly Twitter) exchange on June 24. The screenshot was in response to a question about “industry math.” It broke down, in simple terms, how little an artist actually makes from an album when it’s uploaded to DSPs. “A fan needs to stream an artist’s music 20 times a day for a whole year for that artist to make $25 from that fan,” the tweet read. Metro Boomin not only co-signed the tweet, but made a big announcement. He told followers that these paltry streaming profits are partially why he’s going to stop putting albums on streaming. “This is why my next album probably be the last one streaming,” he wrote.

Metro Boomin’s Next Album Will Reportedly Be His Last On DSPs

The producer didn’t specify what his next album will be. The announcement could pose issues for DSPs like Apple Music and Spotify, though. Metro Boomin and Future dominated the Spotify charts with their joint album WE DON”T TRUST YOU in March. Forbes reported that the duo occupied half a dozen of the top 10 spots on Spotify’s U.S. charts. The biggest song, “Like That,” beat out the second place entry by an impressive 400K streams. This announcement comes a year after Metro Boomin decided to sell part of his publishing catalog to Shamrock Capital for $70 million.

Metro is mindful of his worth, but he’s made a point of avoiding “cash grab” trends. He spoke on the importance of maintaining a quality brand during an interview with Variety. “I feel like people can just tell I care,” he asserted. “At a time when everybody has their hand out — like, ‘Let me do this for cash; let me make a dance for TikTok’ — you can hear all the details and thought behind my music.” Only time will tell if the producer sticks to his non-streaming plan.
