6LACK’s “Talkback” Single Sets The Tone On Our “R&B Season” Playlist

The first weekend of March brought with it a taste of spring, not to mention several must-hear new releases. A handful of them landed on our R&B Season playlist, including Kali Uchis and Don Toliver’s sensual “Fantasy” collaboration. Elsewhere, we suggested tracks from both Masego and 6LACK, who happens to make another appearance today (March 12).

The Baltimore native is presently preparing to drop his Since I Have A Lover album later this month. He finally kicked it off with last week’s titular single. On Friday (March 10), he shared “Talkback,” only generating more buzz for his long-awaited follow-up to East Atlanta Love Letter. Over production by Yakob and Scribz Riley, 6LACK brags about some of big biggest accomplishments.

“Got so many diamonds, they like, ‘Oh, Lord’ / Big business plans in my Goyard / Young and still humble, tryna hold on / Heard ’em talkin’ down, that shit just roll off,” his first verse begins. On the chorus, he sings about having a conversation with God on the phone. “I said, ‘What’s up?’ He talked back / Don’t let your enemies throw you off track.”

Blxst set the R&B Season mood with his Before You Go project in 2022. From the sounds of things, he’s planning to deliver big things this year as well. His New Music Friday contribution came in the form of a four-track Just For Clarity 2 EP, on which he teamed up with a host of noteworthy collaborators. Among them is Roddy Ricch, who joined his fellow Californian for a “Passionate” song.

According to the 30-year-old, this is “bigger” than just another track to him. “I like to look at it more as a mindset, especially working with Roddy on this record. It’s dope to see somebody’s success go from zero to a hundred, especially somebody from the hometown,” Blxst explained. Before they blew up, he and the “paid my dues” hitmaker frequently saw each other at the studio putting in work.

Our final R&B Season pick of the week is another joint effort – this one from Musiq Souldchild and Hit-Boy. It landed on Victims & Villains, and is titled “white rice déjà vu.” Stream it all exclusively on Spotify below, and let us know which new arrivals you’ve had in rotation this weekend in the comments.

6LACK’s “Since I Have A Lover” Tracklist Includes Don Toliver & Quin

When 6LACK hit the scene with “Prblms” in 2016, the Atlanta singer instantly fell under the spotlight as a favored recording artist. The track was featured on his studio debut, Free 6LACK, followed by his 2018 release of East Atlanta Love Letter. But much to fans’ disappointment, the detached nature exuded in his music carried into the lyricist’s real life, with five years passing since his last project. Although the 30-year-old has had minimal output lately, he’s been secretly brewing up some heat over the years for his forthcoming album, Since I Have A Lover.

In anticipation of this long-awaited project, 6LACK has released several teasers in the past few months. The journey to Since I Have A Lover, which will drop on March 24th, commenced with an intimate disclosure that explained the singer’s whereabouts. In “A Letter To My Fans,” the Baltimore native explains, “this took longer than I promised, but some promises are meant to be broken. When it comes to time and growth, there’s no skipping any part of the process so you just end up repeating lessons that you should have definitely learned from by now.”

6LACK Explains Delay In Album With “A Letter To My Fans”

This honest message was joined by two singles from the album, including the titular song, “Since I Have A Lover,” and 6LACK’s most recent drop, “Talkback.” The latter just published on Friday (March 10), accompanied by a low-key lyric video posted on his YouTube page. Both songs bring to light the artist’s uniquely deep and soothing vocals, which have surely been missed by fans.

Since I Have A Lover has been announced as a 20-track album, with minimal features. He did, however, bring on Don Toliver for the track “Temporary” and his real-life lover Quin for “Wunna Dem.” With 6LACK’s album dropping later this month, be sure to keep in touch with HNHH for more information about this highly-anticipated project.

6lack Invites Don Toliver And Quin Onto His Long-Awaited ‘Since I Have A Lover’ Album

Apparently, according to the charts, streaming numbers, and Lizzo, 2023 is the year of alternative R&B musicians. Musician 6lack heard the news and is answering the call with a new project of his own, Since I Have A Lover.

After receiving some outreach assistance from Atlanta’s Water Boyz, Mr. Vaentine flooded residents in his hometown’s downtown area with flowers and a note to confirm a new album was in the works. Now, with two singles, “Since I Have A Lover” (the title track) and “Talkback,” now available across streaming platforms, the songwriter revealed a bit more about the body of work.

With nearly twenty songs on the album, Since I Have A Lover will only feature two billed guest vocal appearances. The first is singer Quin, his romantic partner and past collaborator (“Mushroom Chocolate”). The second is melodic rapper Don Toliver. Quin is set to appear on a track titled “Wunna Dem,” whereas Don Toliver will appear on a song called “Temporary.”

6Lack Teases Forthcoming Album With “Talk Back”

Although 6Lack has mostly kept to himself over the last five years, the 30-year-old artist is preparing to step back into the spotlight. His forthcoming effort, S.I.H.A.L., will release later this month on March 24th, marking his first studio album since his 2018 East Atlanta Love Letter. Just last week, 6Lack dropped a teaser single for the album titled “Since I Have A Lover,” which has also been confirmed as the acronym for the full project. Now, the Altanta-native is back with another taste of what’s to come with his latest track, “Talk Back.”

The Friday (March 10) release of “Talk Back,” proves to be hard-hitting and edgy, as opposed to the soft romantic essence exuded in his last single. Throughout the track, 6Lack alludes to focusing on what matters rather than getting distracted. He notes hate comments, singing “heard ’em talkin’ down that shit just roll off,” and continues to showcase his on-brand unbothered persona while adding a simple, “I do not care.”

6Lack’s Back, “S.I.H.A.L.” To Drop This Month

6Lack also posted another audio on his streaming profiles last week, although not accompanied by any music. Instead, he took a raw approach to address his lack of musical commitment, in what he called “A Letter To My Fans.” In his recognizably soothing voice, the “Prblms” singer says blatantly that “this took longer than I promised, but some promises are meant to be broken.” He clarifies by adding, “when it comes to time and growth, there’s no skipping any part of the process so you just end up repeating lessons that you should have definitely learned from by now.”

While acknowledging the significant time that has rolled by since his second studio album, 6Lack also discloses how he’s been preparing S.I.H.A.L. for the past five years. Just from the two tracks released in anticipation of the project, it’s easy to assume that March 24th will deliver some heat. For more news on hip-hop and pop culture, be sure to check out HNHH.

Quotable Lyrics:

I stopped makin’ excuses and speakin’ on things I don’t know
You should do the same, that should be your one goal
Another million, I’ma need a drumroll
Been through the rain without a poncho
And it ain’t all about the hundos
But I’ma use them hundos to buy my block, I’ll see you at the top

6lack Isn’t Letting Anything Shake Him On His New Single, ‘Talkback’

In the five years 6lack took between his last album, East Atlanta Love Letter, and his upcoming third album, Since I Have A Lover, the R&B superstar has gained a lot of clarity. Many of his earlier works are harrowing accounts of heartache and depression, but with his new era, 6lack is showing us a happier, and healthier side to him. On his new song, “Talkback,” he makes it known that no weapon formed against him shall prosper, and he is not going to let enemies get inside his head.

“I just spoke to God on the phone / That ain’t cap / He was there / Loud and clear / I said, ‘What’s up?,’ He talked back / Don’t let your enemies throw you off track,” sings 6lack on the song’s chorus.

Last week, 6lack released the album’s title track — “Since I Have A Lover” — which features him describing the jubilant feeling he has, now that he is in love. As 6lack enters a new era of inner-peace and clarity, fans are eager to hear the rest of the album, with the singer detailing the transformation he’s gone through during his hiatus.

You can listen to “Talkback” above.

Everything We Know About 6lack’s Next Album

After five years 6LACK (or 6-LACK depending on who you ask) broke his veritable radio silence by dropping the title track off his forthcoming album Since I Have a Lover. Reaching over 500k streams on Youtube in less than a week, if the album performs anything like the single, three time Grammy award nominee 6lack is destined for another hit.

But what do we actually know about the new album? 6lack hasn’t given us much to go on, but if we want to talk about what we know about the album, let’s take a look at everything we already know about the artist himself.

6LACK manages to quietly fly under the radar, with very little by way of social media fodder, online scandals, or whispered gossip. He’s made songs with a variety of artists that range in genre and style – everyone from The Weeknd (who is no stranger to online scandals, if you’ve been paying attention lately) and J. Cole, to Jessie Reyez and T-Pain. His lyrics are a mixture of emotionally raw, with a tinge of dark sexuality and boastful brags. He manages to effortlessly flow between gentle and melodic to a little aggressive, and he does it all in a way that still manages to touch on a topic that music felt like it was lacking in: Love.

‘Since I Have A Lover’ Is Full of ‘Good Moods’

Since I Have A Lover is going to be an album that does all that and more.

“It’s all my good moods compressed into song format,” 6lack commented, “and I hope it makes you feel.”

If the title track of the album is any indication of what we can expect from the forthcoming album, what we can anticipate is an album that combines the ethereal warble and scratchy undertone that 6LACK is famous for with backing music that sounds effortlessly upbeat. The visual for the song begins with 6LACK falling from the sky until he crash lands into an house long abandoned. The singer crash lands, surrounded by the rubble of things freshly fallen apart. As he emerges from the wreckage and begins searching through the dilapidated hallways, he finds the doorway – and suddenly exits into a world sun soaked and full of life, color, and energy. 6LACK spends the rest of the video literally floating through the streets of Atlanta. The video ends with a transition into what we can only assume is a teaser for another song off the album.

6LACK’s crash landing in the video seems to act as a response to his meteoric rise to fame, following the old adage that one goes up must, inevitably, come down.

The singer came out of seemingly nowhere in 2017 – though if you know 6LACK’s history, you’re aware that his struggle to the top was a long time coming. His debut album Free 6LACK hit #5 on the Billboard rap charts, and earned him two Grammy nominations for best urban contemporary album, and best rap/sung performance for the song PRBLMS.

There Is A Tour Following This Release

While 6LACK and his management are keeping the album, and any spoiler alerts, tightly under wraps until it’s release on March 24th, I’m willing to bet money that this latest album will show an even more introspective side than we’ve seen from 6LACK – yet one that has a positive thread interwoven through each song.

If it makes you feel better, it isn’t just fans that are anxiously awaiting 6LACK’s return. Christopher Patterson, 6LACK’s tour manager, is just as excited about it. When I asked him about the album, he had little to say about what was to come – but he knew one thing was for sure. “I’m just ready to tour!”

6lack.SinceIHaveALover

6LACK is getting ready for the release of his new album, Since I Have a Lover. The album is set to arrive on March 24.

Ahead of the new album, 6lack delivered a new video for the album’s title track. The video is directed by Andrew Donoho and shows the singer crash-landing through a roof and landing in an abandoned home.

“‘Since I Have A Lover,’ the title track, is the highs of having a healthy love, compressed into song format,” 6lack said. “It’s a note to self, that I’m no longer who I was or where I was, and that there’s a bigger purpose starting to reveal itself in the things I create. We are simply pushing love, because it’s needed. The verses are short and serve as a moment of acknowledgment for how I feel, and the chorus is less of a lyric and more of a feeling. It’s an exhale, it’s relief, it’s trust, it’s happiness, it’s surreal.”
