Lil Durk Receives New Trial Date In Murder-For-Hire Case

Lil Durk’s trial date in his ongoing murder-for-hire case has been pushed back drastically. After initially setting the date for January 7, the court has since issued a positive response to Durk and codefendant Kavon Grant’s request for more time to prepare for their proceedings. The new trial date has been moved to October 14 with the next motion hearing date coming on August 11.

“The case is so unusual and so complex, due to the nature of the prosecution and the number of defendants that it is unreasonable to expect preparation for pre-trial proceedings or for the trial itself within the time limits established by the Speedy Trial Act,” the ruling reads, as caught by XXL.

Durk is being accused of allegedly organizing a murder-for-hire plot against Quando Rondo back in 2022. He’s being charged with conspiracy to use interstate facilities to commit murder for hire resulting in death. He’s already pleaded not guilty to the crime and vehemently denied the allegation. Durk’s attorney, Drew Findling, has denied the claims, saying in a statement: “The claims in the indictment against Mr. Banks are false and lacking in the most basic due diligence. The real truth is that Durk Banks is a Grammy Award winning artist, a dedicated father, and a loving husband.”

Earlier this week, Durk’s father, Dontay “Big Durk” Banks, broke his silence on his son’s arrest. He argued that the timing was suspicious, considering Durk’s recommitted his life to charitable causes and bettering the community. “… it’s mighty strange that once he started doing good out there, once he stayed away from all the gang-banging, and dissing the dead, and doing things out there in the street, when he turned his life around, practicing religion, doing things for the community, bringing about peace in Chicago and throughout various cities, all of the sudden, now he’s being indicted,” he said.

Doechii Is A Bona Fide TV Star In New Music Video For “Denial Is A River”

If Doechii really wants to start her own classic sit-com, then her new “Denial Is A River” music video is the perfect pitch for it. While many fans hoped that Zack Fox, Baby Tate, Earl Sweat – sorry, Brad Pitt – and more costars would actually join her for a show of some sorts, this creative visual treatment is a very compelling alternative. It eventually switches from the TV aesthetics to a modern look along with an amazing one-take shot, going over the TDE signee’s career evolution and animated therapy session. It’s a killer move, and one that she will follow up with a special livestream with fans at 6PM EST today (Thursday, January 2).

For those unaware, Doechii previewed this “Denial Is A River” music video with some hilarious skits featuring the aforementioned stars, plus ScHoolboy Q, SiR, Teezo Touchdown, and others. They included a telenovela spoof, a slap-heavy pop-off on anyone who stepped in her way, and Zack Fox learning the hard way that Q never shares his weed. We can’t imagine what other skits this crew filmed together, and what other material could overjoy fans who looked forward to a full-on series.

Doechii’s “Denial Is A River” Music Video

Whether or not that eventually happens down the line feels entirely within Doechii’s decision, will, and ability, which is very exciting to see. This rollout for ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL, on which “Denial Is A River” is a strong highlight, continues to resonate with die-hards and new audiences, paving the way for an outstanding 2025. The Tampa femcee garnered a lot of praise and conversation last year that seems harder to live up to with each rising and praiseful remark, but she hasn’t missed yet.

Meanwhile, despite all these excellent celebrations and achievements, Doechii wants to make it clear that she’s not just here for the fun and games. She recently spoke on the depth of the hip-hop art form and how its artists must defend it against those who would rather water its soul, meaning, and values down. We’ll see what the new year brings for this rollout and moment, yet we’re sure that it will champion the culture.

Ice Spice Slammed With Boos After Late Arrival To New Year’s Eve Set At Wildlands Festival

Ice Spice was met with boos during her performance at Wildlands Festival on New Year’s Eve for arriving on the stage 25 minutes late. After performing for just a few minutes, the event organizers cut her mic to move on with the lineup of artists in order to remain on schedule for the midnight ball drop. Podcaster Brenton Larney spoke with The Guardian about the incident afterward.

“At 11.01 p.m. – they gave her an extra minute – they cut the mic and you heard the collective sigh from the crowd,” Larney told the outlet. “They’d been waiting for a while and they get two songs? So that was a bit ridiculous and it was just really disrespectful how she walked off, she was laughing they tried to give her flowers for her birthday and she just shrugged them off.” Larney also noted that Ice seemed like she “didn’t want to be there” and described her attitude as “really disrespectful to see.”

The Wildlands organizers have since released a statement explaining what went down. “We understand that Ice Spice’s delayed arrival caused some frustration,” the festival wrote. “Managing a stacked festival means that we have to be extremely firm with scheduled set times. We had a strict curfew of 12:30 and needed to ensure that Chase & Status went on stage on time so you could all enjoy the NYE Countdown!”

Ice Spice’s Wildlands Set Ends Early

The festival appearance came after Ice dropped a deluxe version of her debut album Y2K! on December 25th. The new songs included on the tracklist feature collaborations with NLE Choppa, DaBaby, and AnuelAA. Check out the clip of Ice Spice’s mic getting cut below.

Joey Badass’ Jay-Z Reference On New Song Causes Fans To Call It A Kendrick Lamar Diss

Joey Badass’ new song “The Ruler’s Back” caused quite the stir in the hip-hop world not just for its quality and return to form, but also for its bravado and competitive energy. Moreover, a lot of people assumed that the following sets of lines took aim at Kendrick Lamar: “I got murals in my city, f**k a nomination / This for every time they left me out the conversation… Too much West Coast d**k licking / I’m hearing n***as throwing rocks, really ain’t s***t sticking.” That last set of bars is a reference to Jay-Z’s “22 Two’s” off of Reasonable Doubt: “Too much West Coast d**k licking / And too many n***as on a mission, doing your best Jay-Z rendition.”

Furthermore, many Kendrick Lamar fans up in arms over this new Joey Bada$$ song probably forgot that same competitive fire within “Control,” so props to Joey for stepping up to bat and reminding fans of that spirit. Jay-Z reference aside, hopefully more MCs strive to put their best foot forward and feel inspired to drop their best material possible, which is the greatest and most important aspect of hip-hop competitiveness. But amid all the rap beef discussions of this year, it would be tough to call this a direct K.Dot diss by any means rather than just a solid flex.

Joey Badass’ Confident Lyrics On “The Ruler’s Back” Have Kendrick Lamar Fans Excited

Back in April, Joey Bada$$ even reacted to the whole Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and J. Cole beef by reminding fans of his response to Kendrick’s “Control” verse. “No escaping, you in a swimming pool of champagne,” he rapped on the cut about 11 years ago. “You set yourself up for that one, mane / The King of New York? Ha! We ain’t just gon’ let that one hang.”

As such, it seems like Joey Bada$$’ biggest issue is with hip-hop fans counting him out of the best rapper conversation, and other MCs not following suit. While his 2024 came to a turbulent end on social media, his 2025 seems like it’ll be an amazing one, regardless of whether Kendrick Lamar or anyone else decides to step into the ring. Joey’s definitely ready for the sparring, but let’s not turn every little competitive statement into a scathing diss.

Doechii Turns The ‘Denial Is A River’ Video Into A Tribute To Classic Sitcoms Like ‘Family Matters’

Last week, Doechii teased the Family Matters-inspired video for “Denial Is A River,” a standout track from her Alligator Bites Never Heal mixtape. The video is now here, and it’s not only picked with cameos, including Abbott Elementary favorite Zack Fox, ScHoolboy Q, Rickey Thompson, Teezo Touchdown, Earl Sweatshirt, SiR, Baby Tate and DJ Miss Milan, it’s also a pitch-perfect homage to classic 1990s sitcoms. Bonus points for the ragdoll toss that’s straight out of an episode of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.

You can watch the “Denial Is A River” video above.

“This song is really just like people hearing how I am, the inner dialogue that I’m having with myself,” Doechii told Rolling Stone about “Denial Is A River,” which was inspired by “A Children’s Story” by Slick Rick. “Like, OK, maybe you should really unpack that. This is an inner dialogue that I’m having with the voices in my head. It just seems like I’m less crazy because I do it with a funny voice.”

2024 was Doechii’s breakout year, with appearances on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and NPR’s “Tiny Desk” series. She also went on a sold-out tour and stole the show at Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw.

Marvin Gaye III Faces Assault Accusations After Alleged Domestic Incident

The oldest son of one of soul music’s biggest legends, Marvin Gaye III, faces accusations of physical assault in a new anonymous lawsuit. Per legal documents reportedly obtained by AllHipHop, the suit alleges a January 2023 incident at his Los Angeles home in which the plaintiff attempted to solve an altercation between Gaye and his wife Wendy, whose relationship apparently broke down afterwards. Specifically, the suit claims that Gaye attacked the Jane Doe, threatened her with more violence, and brandished a gun in her and Wendy’s direction. In addition, the anonymous accuser also alleged that he tried to intimidate her after this incident by cutting off her vehicle’s brake lines and telling affiliates to stalk her home.

According to these reported court documents, Marvin Gaye’s son’s accuser pointed to the emotional trauma she allegedly suffered as a result of this supposed incident in the form of anxiety, weight loss, depression, panic attacks, and having a hard time sleeping. As for what she wants out of the suit, that would be in the form of financial compensation at the court’s discretion. “No way did that happen. It’s all bulls**t. I wouldn’t do that. These are false claims,” he stated to Us Weekly concerning the plaintiff’s allegations.

Other Marvin Gaye news in the headlines recently is a less serious but nonetheless divisive warping of his legacy, such as Tyrese’s national anthem performance last year that was inspired by him. “Few bad notes? Mheeeee that’s an open mic for you…..” he responded to criticism of his rendition. “God is the greatest we live in the best county in the world and I really really tried.”

Meanwhile, we don’t know if the Marvin Gaye family already spoke out concerning these accusations, as they usually chime in when it comes to situations even tangentially related to the legendary musician. We’ll see how much farther this lawsuit goes along and whether or not the parties involved will seek full justice or reach an agreement. It’s still a pretty unclear and contentious situation in the grand scheme of things, so as always, take things with a grain of salt.

Waka Flocka Flame Shows Off Brutal Injuries After Allegedly Being Jumped By 10 Men

Waka Flocka Flame says that he was jumped by 10 people in a brawl that left him bruised and bloodied. He shared a picture of the injuries on Threads, this week, sparking concern from fans. “Can’t believe nobody helped me fight ten n****s off but I’m still standing ten toes marks,” Waka captioned the picture. He hasn’t provided any further context regarding the incident.

When DJ Akademiks shared the post on Instagram, fans hopped in the comments section with supportive messages. “I’m just glad they only lumped you up, and only came with bumps and bruises, it’s a blessing that it wasn’t no weapon involved.
