Super Bowl Halftime Show Producer Claims Jay-Z Chooses The Artists Amid Kendrick Lamar & Lil Wayne Debacle

The Super Bowl LIX halftime show in New Orleans next year on February 9 quickly became one of the hottest hip-hop debates of the year. Moreover, we’re sure you already have your take on Kendrick Lamar getting the headlining slot, and on Lil Wayne missing out on it despite NOLA being his home city. What none of us really know is what the actual process for this looked like. Some fans believe that Jay-Z, who works with the NFL for entertainment endeavors, made the final decision, whereas other reports indicate that it’s not so simple. But as if we needed more contradicting narratives and claims, we now have a new one to unpack.

Jesse Collins, an executive producer for the Super Bowl halftime show since 2021, recently dropped a bombshell claim in his recent Variety interview. “It’s a decision that Jay makes,” he said of the selection process. “Since we’ve been on board with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing. He’s always picked right!” While this is a pretty literal statement, it’s impossible to know for sure whether Collins is really talking about a one-sided decision. After all, it could just be a general answer.

Elsewhere during the interview, Jesse Collins said more about next year’s Super Bowl halftime show, specifically the Lil Wayne controversy. “We love Wayne,” he remarked. “There’s always Vegas odds on who’s going to get to perform it. But I think we’re going to do an amazing show with Kendrick, and I think everybody’s going to love the halftime show. I know Kendrick is going to work exceptionally hard to deliver an amazing show.” Collins also had high praise for K.Dot and Beyoncé’s performance of “Freedom” at the 2016 BET Awards, a spectacle he also helped produce.

Meanwhile, another Jay-Z debate concerning the Super Bowl halftime show is whether or not he offered it to Drake in the past. Some folks think so, others don’t believe it. Nevertheless, this opened up another avenue for criticism and scrutiny when it comes to this halftime show decision. As you’ve probably already experienced, all these moving parts just look like a whole bunch of contradictions and vague obfuscations. We will probably never know for sure…

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Leave Fans Scratching Their Heads With “A Thousand Miles” Remix

As with many of their other VULTURES listening parties, Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s China concert over the weekend was quite eventful. Whether it was bringing all of Ye’s kids onstage or dissing Adidas once more, there was a lot to take in and some notable moments to witness. However, one of the oddest timestamps occurred when they debuted a new song that remixes Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles.” If you don’t recognize the track title, we guarantee you’ll recognize its opening piano lick. Ty sings its lyrics in the clip below over a string recreation of the original instrumentation, backed by frenetic ad-libs from Skinbone’s 2018 parody of the same track.

All in all, it doesn’t actually sound so bad as it looks on paper, especially with the regal flair Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign add to the melody. But it’s certainly an odd choice for a cover, although their as-of-yet unreleased “EVERYBODY” collab with its Backstreet Boys sample kind of set this precedent already. Also, it’s not like the quality standard is very high after VULTURES 2, if we’re being real. Nonetheless, it wasn’t the only new song they teased.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign’s “A Thousand Miles” Rendition

Furthermore, many folks wonder what Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s next moves will be. While there’s still technically another VULTURES volume in the works, the release strategy for its previous installments leaves little hope for a well-groomed release, let alone a compelling one. Also, there are rumors that recent performances have inspired Ye for a new project, although the nature of it’s unclear. Whether it’s a solo album or another collaborative effort is a question for Father Time as of writing this article.

Meanwhile, even with all the family time and performance spectacles, there’s still a lot of controversy over Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign. The former definitely carries most of that weight, and we don’t know if this will ever really see another big shift. Ye often embodies a pendulum swing between many different perspectives, emotions, and compromises. If only the most erratic thing about their art was to make a Vanessa Carlton cover…

China’s Rare Pass On Censorship Paved Way For Kanye Concert

image

We all saw Kanye West just made an unexpected return to China on Sunday. Dude performed in Haikou on Hainan Island for the first time in 16 years. Only Ye can perform in Haikou.

What’s interesting is the concert surprised many due to China’s strict regulations on foreign artists and West’s history of unpredictable and controversial behavior. Despite backlash over his past antisemitic comments, inflammatory statements about slavery, and his support for Donald Trump—which resulted in severed ties with fans and brands like Adidas—tickets for the show sold out rapidly, with over 42,000 tickets gone within minutes.

Get this, while it’s believed that West was given strict guidelines for his performance by the Chinese government, this has not been confirmed. It remains unclear why West was allowed to perform, especially given China’s current restrictions on Western entertainers under President Xi Jinping, which have led many high-profile acts to avoid the country. Artists such as Billie Eilish, Coldplay, and Taylor Swift have skipped China on their tours, while Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga are banned due to what the government considers controversial behavior.

What’s more is Ye’s concert received official approval from Chinese authorities, generating significant buzz on social media. Some speculate that China may be attempting to fill the void left by other international stars like Taylor Swift, while others view it as an effort to boost Hainan’s economy, which relies heavily on tourism. West even brought his children on stage during the concert, adding to the event’s allure.

Originally, West was scheduled to perform in Taiwan, but that show was canceled last month due to “unforeseen circumstances,” adding to the intrigue surrounding his performance in China amid ongoing political tensions.

Guess Ye gets a pass. Taiwan, not so much.
