Tems Aims To Discover Her True Self On The Buoyant ‘Me & U,’ Her First New Song In Two Years

Tems is a credited co-writer on Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up,” arriving last October for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack and earning Tems an Oscar nomination at this year’s ceremony. Still, Tems hadn’t released solo material since her 2021 EP If Orange Was A Place. That finally changed on Thursday morning, October 5, with “Me & U.” Tems gifted her patient fans with an accompanying video, directed by her.

In the video, Tems is found by the ocean. The serene environment is contrasted by Tems’ intense emotion. “This is my decision,” she sings. “I don’t think you listen, you listen / I don’t think you listen.” She asks to “give me something” in return because “I love you,” and “I don’t need nothing, you are my everything.” She dances in the water, atop a cliff, and at a gathering in the woods at night.

At one point, Tems is alone in a castle-like room, sitting in the middle of a circle of lit candles. She sings, “Make me your matter, make me your matter, make me your matter / Show me your substance, make me your person, make me your person /Give me one break, I need faith / Faith to believe you, faith to receive you / Give me something I’m lacking.”

By the video’s end, Tems illustrates her relinquishing of control by sprinting in the dark and falling backward into the ocean.

“Me & U” and its video — and the two-year gap between Tems’ singles — speak to something Tems told Kendrick Lamar for Interview Magazine this June (published in August), when Lamar asked whether she feels “pressure to conform to what people may expect” from her.

“Yeah, you have to remember how you felt when you started as an artist, to understand the reason you’re doing what you’re doing,” she said. “Yes, it’s to be seen, or to make a name for yourself, but beyond that, why are you doing it? Most of the time it’s because you have a story to share, a message to give. When you become more known or seen, it’s very easy to get caught up in, ‘What do people expect of me now?’ But for me, it’s like, ‘What do I expect of myself now?’ Because you’re the one that has to live with yourself, the one that has to sleep with the decisions that you make.”

The Grammy winner continued, “Trusting yourself is so key, and I’m not going to stop trusting my guts just because people can see me now. It’s like being in a zoo. The animals don’t change their behavior just because you’re looking at them. They’re always going to be who they are. So why should I change?”

Kim Kardashian recently tried beer for the first time (or so she claims), but she’s not new to liquor. On the latest episode of Hulu’s The Kardashians, the SKIMS founder revealed she once “blacked out” while partying with Beyoncé.

“I’m definitely still a lightweight. I’ll have, like, two shots, and I’ll be wasted and it’s so much fun. I’ll be dancing on the dance floor,” she said. “Seriously, I know you guys don’t believe me — ask Beyoncé! I danced all night long at her party, I think I blacked out.” Kardashian “woke up to so many text messages, and I was like, ‘Khloé, what did I do?’ She’s like, ‘You were dropping it low and dancing,’ and I was like, ‘Nooo!’ I danced all night long and had no idea.”

It’s unclear which Beyoncé party Kim was referring to, but if we had to guess it was the singer’s 41st birthday bash last year. And the timeline adds up. Back in 2022, Kardashian admitted that she had begun drinking again after abstaining from alcohol for years. “I started to drink a little bit at the age of 42. Coffee and alcohol,” she told Gwyneth Paltrow on her Goop podcast in December. “I feel like I just gotta let loose a little bit.”

Gunna’s “fukumean” Goes Platinum

One of the biggest rap hits of the year can now officially claim that tile, as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently issued a platinum certification to Gunna’s “fukumean.” Moreover, the song is a standout on his 2023 album a Gift & a Curse, which was his comeback to the rap game after his plea deal in the YSL RICO case. That being said, it’s not like this was the only successful track on the album; far from it, in fact. For example, the project itself recently received a gold certification from the RIAA, marking it as one of the year’s most commercially significant. The cultural significance of it for 2023 can’t be understated, either, as this song and LP represent a lot.

Furthermore, many thought that the College Park MC would fall off after his brief prison stint. Some just didn’t think he had a career after this, while others pointed towards his alleged “snitching” in the case as a prime reason to shun him. Regardless of where you fall on that spectrum, it’s clear that Gunna’s not going anywhere anytime soon. “fukumean” still gets spins like wildfire, and amid a lot of other tracks that address his situation, this one proved he still makes bangers.

However, maybe this phase of Wunna’s career won’t be what truly defines his post-RICO renaissance; it could just be the beginning. For example, an upcoming remix of Victor Thompson’s “This Year” has fans very excited for what he’ll do next. Gunna debuted the Afrobeats remix during his most recent live show in Los Angeles, and fans absolutely love this new direction for him. While he’s very well-known for his woozy, laid-back, and flow-heavy brand of trap, it looks like we’ll be getting more versatile material from him very soon.

Meanwhile, it’s safe to say that “fukumean” will remain relevant in the year’s last few months. We have a lot of big releases to look forward to, but that guitar loop and flute-assisted atmosphere is too infectious to ignore. According to the SKIMS founder, she danced the night away at Bey’s event, and didn’t even remember it the next day. Kim claims that she’s not a big drinker, and only enjoys a bit of alcohol on occasion. This probably explains why her sisters had to give her a refresher on her antics from the night before.

Clearly, Kim and Beyonce go way back. The reality star went out to support the icon’s Renaissance Tour at SoFi Stadium last month, posing for photos with family. He has been participating in interviews for about a week, and these interviews have brought up some interesting storylines. For instance, Danis spoke about his relationship with Joe Rogan, while on the FLAGRANT podcast, with Andrew Schulz. As Danis describes, he and Rogan like each other quite a bit. In fact, Rogan got Danis eight tickets to his show. However, there is one thing that has upset Danis as it pertains to Rogan.

The Weeknd’s Tour Makes Big Economic Impact In Colombia

All summer there has been plenty of talk about some of the biggest artists in the music industry touring. Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Drake have all made headlines with nearly every single stop on their major tours. But one absolutely massive tour that shouldn’t be overlooked is The Weeknd’s monumental “After Hours Till Dawn” tour. The second leg of the tour has been going on since June and wraps up later this month. It features dozens of shows across both Europe and Latin America, one of which took place in Colombia yesterday.

According to some local reporting about the show, it apparently had an economic impact that ran very deep. “The artist arrived with his After Hours Till Dawn Tour 2023, which generated a significant impact on the city. It was learned that the organization of the event generated 1,500 jobs, 35 companies were involved and 800 million pesos were paid in rent, it generated considerable movement for the economy,” the report reads. Brett Favre To Be Deposed In Mississippi Welfare Scandal

Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre will be deposed in connection with a sprawling welfare scandal in Mississippi later this month. Favre is accused of participating in a scheme that saw millions of dollars in money earmarked for Mississippi’s most at-risk families diverted elsewhere. In particular, Favre is suspected of working with former governor Phil Bryant to use fraudulent funds to help build a new volleyball venue at Southern Miss. The case has been unfolding over the course of the last year, thanks to the work of Anna Wolfe and other journalists at Mississippi Today.

Favre is one of 43 defendants in the case. Of the $77 million prosecutors believed was fraudulently lifted from the state’s TANF fund, Southern Miss is believed to have received $5 million while Favre has paid back $1.1 million he reportedly received for speeches he never gave. Also being deposed at the end of October is former Southern Miss president Rodney Bennett. Bennett was recently hired as the chancellor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

A deposition serves as a baseline for a person’s account of events. The individual being deposed is asked questions under oath and their answers are recorded on audio and video. This allows the prosecution to refer back to the deposition if the individual says something different in court. Depositions aren’t free-for-alls however. That is to say, the prosecution can’t throw random questions at Favre to catch him out. While there is leeway for exploration, the deposition largely has to stick to what Favre himself knows.

There is no time limit on a deposition. However, most depositions only last one eight-hour session. The next step after deposing Favre will come at the trial. If the prosecution chooses to call on Favre to testify, he will have to be careful to ensure that his testimony on the stand matches what he said in his deposition. If his story changes, he will be “impeached” by the prosecution. This means that he would lose any credibility in the eyes of the judge and jury.

Dillon Danis Wants UFC Shot If He Beats Logan Paul

Dillon Danis has stated a desire to get a shot in the UFC if he beats Logan Paul later this month. “I’m willing to go and go out there and see if what I’m saying is true. If I go to the UFC, give me your toughest fight. Give me Ian Garry, give me Neil Magny. Anybody. Leon Edwards. That would be the easiest fight. Colby [Covington], anybody,” Danis told The MMA Hour earlier this week. Danis is still technically under contract with Bellator, the Paramount-owned UFC rival. However, he hasn’t fought for the promotion since a pair of fights in 2019.

Furthermore, Danis claimed that his target was the UFC despite an offer from Misfits Boxing. “[Misfits is] trying to sign me, if I beat him. They’re actually in kahoots, who wants me, Jake [Paul] or KSI. But why am I doing that, boxing? I’m a jiu-jitsu guy. It’s so stupid. I want to go tap [UFC lightweight champion [Islam [Makhachev]. I want to go f beat these guys.” However, everything rides on the fight against Paul on October 14.

Paul Promises Danis “The Worst Night Of His Life”

Despite Danis’ confidence, the Paul fight will not be easy for him. “I can’t imagine after all the talk he’s done on X, after all the shit he said, what it’s going to be like to be trapped in a ring with me — he has made a grave error. And assuming he shows up, October 14 will be the worst night of his life,” Paul told TMZ.

However, Paul was far from finished. “He’s a crybaby, legitimately. I’m not just saying this to be like a mean fight companion trying to rile him up. He’s a coward. He’s made this fight entirely about a woman — he chose to pick a fight with a woman. She fought back. He’s whining about it, he’s upset. He’s making excuses left, right and center.” During the same interview, Paul also confirmed that Nina Agdal plans to attend the fight in Manchester, England.
