People Are Upset That Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Has The Same Ableist Slur Lizzo Recently Removed From ‘Grrrls’

Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance is so far universally beloved, although some listeners have noticed one aspect of it they find troubling: In one section of the song “Heated,” Beyoncé says, “Spazzin’ on that ass, spaz on that ass / Fan me quick, girl, I need my glass.”

The use of the word “spaz” is particularly noteworthy since Lizzo just received criticism for including the word on “Grrrls” and promptly changed the song’s lyrics in response. Now, people are calling out Beyoncé, including Hannah Diviney, the writer and disability advocate whose tweet brought significant attention to Lizzo’s lyrical issue.

For those unfamiliar with the term, Merriam-Webster defines it as “one who is inept” and categorizes it as “slang, often offensive.” In 2007, Benjamin Zimmer, editor for American dictionaries at Oxford University Press, noted that in the US in the 1960s, usage of the word shifted “from its original sense of ‘spastic or physically uncoordinated person’ to something more like ‘nerdy, weird, or uncool person.’” The word is derived from “spastic” and “spasticity,” of which a 2015 paper published by the National Library Of Medicine notes, “Spasticity is a velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone and uncontrolled, repetitive, involuntary contractions of skeletal muscles. Spasticity presents as upper motor neuron symptoms in patients with central nervous system pathology such as stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, or multiple sclerosis.”

In response to Lizzo, Diviney explained the issue with the word, tweeting, “Hey @lizzo my disability Cerebral Palsy is literally classified as Spastic Diplegia (where spasticity refers to unending painful tightness in my legs) your new song makes me pretty angry + sad. ‘Spaz’ doesn’t mean freaked out or crazy. It’s an ableist slur. It’s 2022. Do better.” In a July 30 tweet in response to the Beyoncé song, she wrote, “So @Beyonce used the word ‘spaz’ in her new song Heated. Feels like a slap in the face to me, the disabled community & the progress we tried to make with Lizzo. Guess I’ll just keep telling the whole industry to ‘do better’ until ableist slurs disappear from music [broken heart emoji].”

Diviney expanded on those points in an opinion piece published on The Guardian today, writing in part:

“Beyoncé’s commitment to storytelling musically and visually is unparalleled, as is her power to have the world paying attention to the narratives, struggles and nuanced lived experience of being a black woman – a world I can only ever understand as an ally, and have no desire to overshadow.

But that doesn’t excuse her use of ableist language – language that gets used and ignored all too often. Language you can be sure I will never ignore, no matter who it comes from or what the circumstances are. It doesn’t excuse the fact that the teams of people involved in making this album somehow missed all the noise the disabled community made only six weeks ago when Lizzo did the same thing.

It doesn’t explain how millions of people have already heard this album and yet aren’t raising the issue, except to make fun of or degrade the disabled community.”

After the release of “Heated,” some took to Twitter and pointed out how Beyoncé wasn’t facing as much backlash as Lizzo did.

Meanwhile, others excused Beyoncé’s use of the word and argued it has a different meaning in the Black community.

Beyoncé has yet to publicly address the situation.

Lizzo is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Deshaun Watson’s Upcoming Suspension Length Revealed

Deshaun Watson has been one of the biggest stories of the entire NFL offseason. After settling the vast majority of his sexual assault lawsuits, Watson has been subjected to a vigorous investigation from the NFL. Over the last few weeks, it has become increasingly clear that Watson will be suspended, although the main question has been, “for how long?”

There were some people out there who thought Watson could be suspended for one to two seasons. This kind of punishment would be unprecedented, and most fans felt like it was a pretty unlikely amount of time. The Browns were certainly hoping so, especially after giving the quarterback over $200 million in guaranteed money.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, a decision was finally made regarding Watson this morning. As you can see in the tweet below, it has been revealed that Watson will likely be suspended for six games. This means that the Browns quarterback will be able to play in 11 games this season. Of course, this is not an ideal situation for the Browns, however, it is a lot better than some of the alternatives.

Watson has been working hard with the Browns throughout the offseason, and it seems like he is fitting in nicely with the team. The AFC North is an extremely competitive division right now, and there is no doubt that Watson’s presence will have a huge impact on the AFC playoff picture come January.

Patti Labelle recently sat down with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN for a recent episode of Drink Champs. During the interview, the music legend shared her earliest memories of interacting with hip hop.

“I guess it was 2Pac” LaBelle said before being reminded of her collaboration with Big Daddy Kane “Feels Like Another One.”

“But I started moving to ‘California Love,’” Labelle said to the podcast hosts. “That’s when I started to Crip Walk,” she added.

DJ EFN then asked LaBelle if she ever met Pac to which she responded “No, never.” N.O.R.E then asked her if she had ever met Biggie to wich she also responded “No, but Biggie had a song about Patti,” referencing the song “Just Playing (Dreams)” where Big raps “I’d probably go to jail for f*cking Patti LaBelle.”

During the interview LaBelle also spoke on her relationship with Jazmine Sullivan, admitting that at one point she thought the Heaux Tales artist hated her.

“I thought Jazmine Sullivan hated me. Let me say something, last week, she made my heart pound, hard. She called me,” LaBelle said. “The same gentleman, Marquese, who made this outfit and the outfit that I wore for Essence last couple weeks ago, he’s good friends with Jazmine. And so, he said ‘Jazmine and I always used to talk about who’s coming to Patti LaBelle’s party first? You or me?’”

New “Wakanda Forever” Lego Set Reveals Who The New Black Panther Is

Black Panther 2 Okoye Shuri

After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, Marvel announced that they would not be recasting the role of T’Challa, leaving many fans speculating about who would assume the role of the Black Panther. During ComicCon last month, the trailer for Black Panther 2 was shown, and at the end, showed a figure in the Black Panther suit. While the trailer did not show which character is set to become the next Black Panther, a recently announced Lego set seems to have revealed which character is set to become the next defender of Wakanda. is unknown which character is set to assume the mantle as the Black Panther.

The image of the lego, which is apparently set for an October release, set shows Shuri, T’Challas’s little sister, as the new Black Panther. Shuri is played by Letitia Wright, and Shuri even becomes the Black Panther in the comics.

However, things can be photoshopped, and LEGO has neither confirmed nor denied that this is an official lego set. However, this would not be the first time LEGO has revealed something in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ahead of the release of Avengers: Endgame a picture was leaked of the Quantum Realm suits that the Avengers would wear as they tried to go throughout time to collect the infinity stones. It is noted that the suits were not finished by the time filming started so they were digitally added to the cast in post-production.

SOURCE SPORTS: Jake Paul’s Madison Square Garden Fight Canceled Due to Opponent’s Weight Issue

Jake Paul Set to Enter Deal with Showtime Sports

Jake Paul was set to headline a boxing match at Madison Square Garden on Aug 6 but it is now canceled. According to ESPN, Paul’s opponent, Hasim Rahman Jr., had a weight issue. The fight was promoted by Most Valuable Promotions.

In a statement, Rahman planned to weigh in at 215 on Friday. He signed a contract at 200 pounds and a compromise was reached to compete at 205. Rahman’s team decided to withdraw from the fight if it was not at 215 pounds.

“MVP and Jake Paul will not reward someone that has conducted themselves in such a deceiving and calculated manner,” the statement said. “Therefore, MVP is left with no choice but to cancel the August 6th event. This forced outcome impacts Jake Paul, Amanda Serrano and every other fighter on this card who have trained tirelessly over the past few months for this event. The boxing community must hold Hasim Rahman Jr. liable for his lack of professionalism.”

Serrano was booked in a co-main event against Brenda Carbajal.

Kehlani Celebrates the Start of the International ‘Blue Water Road’ Tour

Kehlani 1 2

The Blue Water Road tour by two-time GRAMMY® Award nominee Kehlani began this weekend with an outstanding performance at the Atlantic Union Bank Pavilion in Portsmouth, Virginia, with special guests Rico Nasty and Destin Conrad. The multi-platinum singer sang songs from her most recent album, Blue Water Road, including the number-one hits “Can I,” “Toxic,” and “Distraction,” as well as “wish I never,” “everything,” and others.

Blue Water Road, a collection of mostly R&B and orchestral pop songs with spiritual, sexy, and emotional overtones that debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in May 2022, marks a new chapter in Kehlani’s career. Kehlani’s third studio album, which features guest appearances from Blxst, Justin Bieber, Syd, Jessie Reyez, Ambré, and Thundercat, was created from songs that were originally intended to be bonus songs for the deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed 2020 album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t. The album also represents a metaphorical journey in the artist’s mind to new places.

Following performances in Atlanta, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and other cities around North America, Kehlani will conclude their North American leg in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday, October 21st at Waikiki Shell. The tour is in support of their most recent album. After that, they will go to Europe, where the second part of their tour will begin on November 17 in Copenhagen, Denmark. From there, they will stop in Stockholm, Berlin, Paris, London, and other cities before wrapping up their trip on December 12 at Manchester, UK’s Victoria Warehouse.

Irv Gotti Hires Actor De’Aundre Bonds For New Film ‘We Made It In America’

Screen Shot 2022 08 01 at 5.01.29 AM

Legendary actor De’Aundre Bonds was recently hired by music executive and producer Irv Gotti, for his new film, “Tales Presents: We Made It In America.” The two have linked up in Georgia for work. It was back in April of last year, when NY rapper 50 Cent and De’Aundre got into a social media bicker. 50 Cent stated “Every now and then I get a hater,” “note to self, never give this n!66a a job Fuck outta here.” Irv decided to not listen to 50 and give De’Aundre a chance.

Gotti’s new film,” We Made It In America” was produced and funded by himself. The film is to be released in January of 2023. Gotti’s team started working on the project earlier this week. Besides the new film, De’Aundre is getting himself prepared for Snowfall’s 6th season in which he will return to the screen as Skully. De’Aundre is also gathering up for his highly anticipated autobiography and cannabis line, Stacey OG, which is set to release later this year.
