Ashanti Confirmed That She And Nelly Are Engaged And Expecting Their First Child Together

It has been some months since rumors first began to circulate about a potential pregnancy for the recently reunited Ashanti and Nelly. The millennial radio mainstays were first linked again in 2022 after revisiting the past‘ with a sultry performance in Las Vegas.

Today, Ashanti confirmed the pregnancy rumors and announced her engagement to Nelly in an exclusive report in Essence, as well as an Instagram post with a LOT of production value.

“This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” she told Essence. Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”

The two performers had originally dated from early 2003 after meeting at a Grammy Awards press conference and were together for about 10 years, splitting in 2015 after Ashanti intimated that she’d been “betrayed” by the “Country Grammar” rapper, although they did not reveal a specific reason for the breakup. Their reunion was greeted warmly by fans, with Nelly saying, “I think it surprised both of us though. It wasn’t anything that was like planned. I think we both were pretty much doing what we do, but sometimes being separate, you understand one another more. See maybe what they see.”

Now it seems what the couple sees — or hears, rather — is wedding bells.

Congratulations are in order!

We’ve all been overjoyed seeing Ashanti and Nelly rekindle the flame; now, the lovebirds welcome a newborn on the horizon. In addition to her pregnancy announcement, Ashanti exclusively revealed to Essence that she is engaged to Nelly.

Ashanti shared the exciting news to her 8.5 followers on Instagram with the caption, “Baby baby baby baby…. ❤🙏🏽😆” This was a play on words from her 2002 single “Baby.”

The cute video shows Ashanti getting ready for a show at Barclays Center in New York. One of the producers asks her how much time she needs, to which she responds: “I need about 9 months.” It then shows her mom’s shocked face, as this is the R&B singer’s first child.

The IG post was in collaboration with her boyfriend Nelly, Essence, and Proov, the latter of which is an at-home fertility company that helps patients with their pregnancies every step of the way.

Ashanti, who’s rumoured to be expecting her first child in the coming months, has shared much of her personal life with the public throughout her career as an R&B star. Understandably, she’s choosing to keep her baby bump under wraps while rumours fly, though she’s still full of energy as she performs some of her biggest hits on stage. Her most famous relationship was with Nelly – the alleged father of her unborn baby – who she initially dated two decades ago. Interestingly, Hollywood Unlocked CEO Jason Lee revealed on today’s (April 10) episode of his podcast that another famous artist once had Ashanti on his arm. 35-year-old Joyner Lucas spent some time romancing the “Happy” hitmaker, though their time together was kept out of the spotlight. “It was dope,” the rapper said without hesitation when asked how his time with Ashanti was. “She’s a really dope person, she’s sweet, amazing,” he calmly praised his ex.

In the clip above, Lee asks his guest to spill on how he and Ashanti linked up. “I’m a private motherf**ker,” Lucas stated, “but what I will say is that she’s an amazing person. I know she was really excited to be a mom.” The two artists apparently spoke about the idea of one day having a family together, but the episode preview showed some hesitation from Lucas when asked if he was in love with the black-haired beauty. The eight-year age gap between them indicates that the Massachusetts native is a fan of older women, which he confirmed. “You’re a Leo, a lion – you want the cougar,” Lee astrologically theorized.

Much of the news revolving around Nelly and Ashanti recently hasn’t had much to do with anything they’ve done on stage. Social media lit up earlier this week when Ashanti posted a video of the singer rubbing her belly in a way that indicated to many fans that she might be pregnant. Rumors began to swirl immediately but they didn’t last all that long before being officially confirmed. A source broke the news the same day that the couple are expecting a child together.

Now video is making the rounds from a performance over the weekend that saw the two sharing the stage. During the performance, Ashanti unpacked her classic 2002 hit “Mesmerize.” But where the song would normally feature Ja Rule, Nelly stepped in. While reminiscing on the past, Ashanti happened to reconnect with a very famous ex, Nelly. Since their lovey-dovey Las Vegas performance in April, the pair haven’t left each other’s side. Now, their romantic party of two might be expanding soon.

On Monday, December 4, US Weekly alleged that Ashanti and Nelly are expecting their first child together. Fans online quickly elated over the rumor, given that the couple dated on and off for nearly 10 years. Given the news, it’s worth asking how many kids does Ashanti have?

The answer is: Ashanti doesn’t have any children. As for Nelly, he has four children of his own: two children (a daughter and son) from prior relationships and two adopted children. Nelly’s adoptive children are his biological niece and nephew. Nelly formerly adopted his niece and nephew following the death of his sister Jackie, who battled health complications from leukemia.
