Your Old Droog Brings Hip-Hop Back to NYC with Sold-Out Show and New Album ‘Movie’

Your Old Droog

Your Old Droog has brought a breath of fresh air to the ever-changing hip-hop scene. On a night that will be remembered by many, the Brooklyn rapper performed at a sold-out Bowery Ballroom, stamping his mark on his fans and the city’s music culture. This performance, teeming with energy and raw emotion, coincided with the release of his latest self-released album, Movie.

The Bowery Ballroom Experience

Droog left no stone unturned with bars for the ladies, the fellas and hip hop heads who feel unheard. After going on a worldwide of emotions, The Source caught up with Droog after his flawless show. When asked about what felt different about his Bowery show, Your Old Droog reflected on the unique atmosphere that filled the venue. “There was a certain feeling in the crowd. They were truly present. The energy was crazy. There’s no crowd like a NY crowd. When they give it up, that means they really rock with you,” he said. “New Yorkers, we’re some of the most difficult to impress… so to get that type of reaction at home lets me know I’m doing something right. It was spiritual.”

Droog

This performance wasn’t just another show; it was a transformative experience for Droog as an artist. “Every NY show changes me. My last one led me to making my album Movie… it informed me in so many ways,” he shared. “The crowd will literally tell you exactly what you need to be doing if you pay close attention. I’m just glad I got to be present in that moment. Performing is the MC equivalent of going to the gym. That’s how you train, and develop certain skills and muscles.”

Movie: A Cinematic Journey

Movie, Droog’s new album, is a testament to his growth and self-awareness as an artist. Since his debut, Your Old Droog has been known for his sharp lyricism and vivid storytelling, often drawing comparisons to Nas. After surprising fans with his smash ‘Dropout Boogie’ with the late MF DOOM, Movie continues this tradition but delves deeper into autobiographical territory. The track ‘How Do You Do It?’ showcases Droog’s vulnerable side with a series of hard-hitting questions that have floated through all of our heads. Featuring production from heavyweights like Madlib, Just Blaze, and Harry Fraud, the album boasts a cinematic quality that sets it apart.

Tracks like “Mantra” showcase Droog’s ability to blend personal experiences with topics that make you question the world. Over Harry Fraud’s soulful beat, Droog raps about his upbringing as an immigrant child also engulfed in the hip hop culture. The album organically finds a mix of the classic hip hop sound with bars that reflect on his Ukraine-born roots.

On “I Think I Love Her,” a Michael Jackson sample brings out Droog’s nostalgic reflection, while “Grandmother’s Lessons” uses picture-perfect imagery to describe his grandmother and the poignant relationship between a child and their grandmother. Madlib’s production on “DBZ” highlights Droog’s lyrical prowess, with sharp punchlines and clever wordplay that flashback to his B-boy roots.

A Triumphant Return

Your Old Droog’s recent show at the Bowery Ballroom and the release of Movie signify a pivotal moment in his career. As he continues to evolve and refine his craft, Droog remains a vital figure in New York’s hip-hop scene, bridging the gap between the genre’s rich history and its vibrant future.

For fans of authentic, heartfelt hip-hop, Movie is a must-listen. The album takes you on a journey touching all of the points and essence of a real MC. And if his performance at the Bowery is any indication, Your Old Droog is just getting started.

Check out Movie and experience the artistry of one of NYC’s most promising MCs.

Your Old Droog’s Latest Album Is A “Movie” & It’s One Fans Will Want To Rewatch

Sometimes, not everyone can make their first, second, or even third album their most complete. To be honest, it is quite rare for anyone to do it, even the certified legends. That seems to be the case for Ukranian American spitter Your Old Droog, in his opinion anyway. The Brooklynite has been one of the more prolific voices in the East Coast underground and he prefers it that way. “I don’t really have interest in fame or the idea of celebrity, according to a feature from Variety. All of that hard work has seemingly culminated into Your Old Droog’s newest album, Movie.

“On the outside and on the inside, I feel like I mastered certain things, like certain recording techniques, writing techniques. I feel like I mastered ad libs in late 2022… in terms of how I record them, my process of selecting them and editing”, Droog mentioned. “I had a conversation before I worked on this album with El-P, where he was like, ‘Be okay with people missing you for a while. Just put everything into your 12 best songs.’ So, I internalized that before I was making the record, and just said, let me not do so much — let me do exactly what’s needed. I feel like I did”. We certainly feel that way, as Droog talks about all sorts of life experiences. This tape truly describes his life, aka his Movie.

Your Old Droog Revving Up For New Album “Movie” With Conductor Williams-Produced Lead Single “Mercury Thermometers”

Your Old Droog is one the grittiest New York rappers your ears will ever hear. That is saying a lot, given how many blue-collar MCs come from there. His deliberate flow makes it easy to dissect every bar and entendre he spits at you. Today, Your Old Droog is back with another one of those cutthroat records called “Mercury Thermometers.” This is his latest offering, and it follows up on a handful of stellar features over the last couple of weeks. “DBZ” with Method Man, Denzel Curry and Madlib was one hell of a team-up and has quickly risen to the top of Droog’s most popular tracks on Spotify.

Another song that has been hitting for him has been “REEKYOD.” Another Madlib-backed track, Zel’s spot is swapped for another icon, Black Thought. While they are not his tracks, Droog still brings it to each offering, but that should not be a surprise. “Mercury Thermometers” is his track though, and it is also a lead single for a new project coming soon.

According to Stereogum, Your Old Droog will be releasing his first album since 2021’s Space Bar called Movie. All we know is that “Mercury Thermometers” is the promo cut and that it is expected to drop next month. Oh, and we have word on one feature so far, which is the prolific producer Conductor Williams. He produced this single, and the beat is straight boom-bap nastiness. Check out the record with the link above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “Mercury Thermometers” by Your Old Droog and Conductor Williams? Does this song get you excited for his upcoming album Movie, why or why not? Is this one of his stronger releases of his late? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Black Thought And Madlib Team Up With Your Old Droog On The Murky ‘REEKYOD’

The last time Madlib collaborated with Black Thought was four years ago, on the producer’s joint album with Freddie Gibbs, Bandana. “Education” gave listeners a glimpse of what a team-up between such a dynamic duo could bring, although it was mostly Gibbs’ show and Yasiin Bey came along for the ride.

Today, though, Black Thought secures a Madlib joint of his very own in “REEKYOD,” a portmanteau of his first name Tariq, and the initials of their collaborator on the new single, Your Old Droog. It’s a surprisingly low-key affair, with Madlib providing a muted, shuffling beat and Thought doing what he does best. Droog provides a more energetic counterpoint to Thought’s laid-back flow, hanging with one of rap’s premiere lyricists. If this doesn’t get you hype for a potential Madlib-Black Thought project, absolutely nothing will.

Such a project isn’t out of the realm of possibility, either. Black Thought has spent much of the past few years stepping out of his role as The Roots’ frontman, putting out a steady stream of projects with singular producers. Since 2020, he’s released albums primarily produced by Sean C (Streams Of Thought, Vol. 3: Cane & Able), Danger Mouse (Cheat Codes), and El Michels Affair (2023’s Glorious Game). So, a Madlib project wouldn’t go amiss (if you guys are reading this… you know what to do). The press release for “REEKYOD” doesn’t specifically mention what else Madlib’s working on these days, but if he’s got the time, rap fans would almost certainly like to see it.

Madlib & Your Old Droog Preview Their Upcoming LP With “REEKYOD” Featuring Black Thought

Madlib and Your Old Droog continue to build and strengthen their work relationship with another new single “REEKYOD.” This is now the second offering we have received from this acclaimed duo in the last few weeks. “DBZ” was their last effort and that lyrical powerhouse of a track included extra bars from Denzel Curry and Method Man. On that single, Denzel was making some noise on it by apparently dissing Kendrick Lamar. “‘Cause using big words don’t make you lyrical / And going backwards in a swimmin’ pool don’t make you spiritual.” While “REEKYOD” does not have any subliminal shots, it does have gritty production and adept lyrics from Droog and Black Thought.

According to Stereogum, Madlib and Droog are gearing up to drop a collaboration album in the near future. For the decorated producer, it will be his third project of the year, following up YHWH is LOVE and Liberation 2. For the Brooklynite, it will be his first record in about a year and a half since YOD Presents: The Shining. According to The Source, Droog shared how thrilled he was to be a part of this song, as well as the project on the way.

“It’s an honor to be inducted into the heavyweight class of hip hop. To be able to spar with one of the greatest MC’s on a beat by the greatest producer is a dream come true,” Droog said. “Look out for the Madlib x YOD album coming soon.” We sure will be and be sure to check out “REEKYOD” with the link above.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single “REEKYOD” by Madlib, Black Thought, and Your Old Droog? Is this the better of their two recent singles, why or why not? Renowned producer Madlib unveils his latest single, “REEKYOD,” featuring the lyrical talents of Black Thought and Your Old Droog. Making its debut on Madlib’s newly minted label, Madlib Invazion, the track showcases the iconic artist’s innovative approach to hip-hop.

Teaming up with acclaimed artist Mathieu Bitton for the single’s artwork, Madlib presents “REEKYOD” as more than just a song; it’s a testament to artistic independence and musical brilliance. The collaboration celebrates the essence of hip-hop, highlighting real rhymes, captivating beats, and the profound connection between emcee and producer.

“This is strictly for the honorees. Madlib is in his bag per usual and YOD is more than a force to be reckoned with. Simply complex, this piece is high art. Triple threat. Instant classique,” says Black Thought.
