Pink Friday became a forceful and vibrant introduction to an integral figure in hip-hop’s fabric. Its sequel feels like a culmination of 10+ years of dominance in the rap game with responses to calls for “mixtape Nicki” and bolder advances towards melodies that can sometimes fall flat. Best exemplified in the first few songs alone, the Billie Eilish-sampling “Are You Gone Already” finds Nicki exploring her airy vocals with introspection on motherhood and the loss of her father.
But after such a loaded and emotionally-heavy glance into Nicki’s psyche since Papa Bear’s birth, she delivers a glorious spree of bars over hard-hitting production. “Beep Beep” and “FTCU” bring Nicki Minaj’s lyrical mastery to the forefront over production from Murda Beatz and ATL Jacob, respectively. The former feels more in line with one-off singles like “Chun-Li” which oozes New York swagger over electrifying production. The latter, however,

After linking up with Young Money alum Drake on “First Person Shooter” and “Evil Ways,” it would’ve felt only appropriate that J Cole similarly went bar-for-bar with Nicki. However, that competitive spirit manifests in other forms. As the two trade bars reflect on loyalty and family, Nicki perfectly sets up Cole for an impressive performance that remains one of the best verses on the album.
Unfortunately, the same can’t necessarily be said for her mentor Lil Wayne, who ends his rather impressive 2023 feature run with a throwaway verse on “RNB.” Nicki’s latest signee Tate Kobang holds down the hook on the song but part of it feels like it could’ve been a reference track for Chris Brown.
However, Drake lends his talents for easily one of the most infectious records on the project, “Needle.” Although their previous collabs, whether “Moment 4 Life” or “Seeing Green,” allowed the two to flex their lyrical prowess while similarly tracing their influences back to Lil Wayne, “Needle” leans deeper into the Caribbean and African influences that are dominating mainstream sounds. No doubt, both Drake and Nicki Minaj have played critical roles in popularizing these genres for Western audiences in their careers. However, Drake brings some serious Views vibes with an infectious earworm of a hook that sounds like it came from PartyNextDoor’s hard drive. For Nicki, it’s a record that further traces her history in Caribbean music, similar to “Forward From Trini” ft. Skeng and Skillibeng.
Pink Friday 2 Is A Breath Of Fresh Air In Her Catalog
While there are plenty of highlights across the album, Pink Friday 2’s biggest weakness is the reliance on all-too-familiar samples that fail to do justice to the original. Songs like “Pink Friday Girls” feel like it’s a contrived effort for TikTok virality and inescapable radio play through Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.”
However, there are other moments where she effectively flips popular records into something of her own. “Barbie Dangerous” pulls directly from Biggie and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s iconic “Notorious Thugs,” down to the double-time flows that would make Biggie and Bone Thugs proud. Then, there’s “Everybody” ft Lil Uzi Vert, an inarguable hit record. Transforming Junior Senior’s “Move Your Feet” into a Jersey drill banger, Nicki and Lil Uzi Vert continue to find new soundscapes for their chemistry to flourish. While Nicki’s attempts to fortify relationships with the younger generation of artists, “Everybody” showcases her and Uzi’s synchronicity to a tee.
At first glance, Pink Friday 2 can be easily written off as another cash grab: an expansive 22-song tracklist that utilizes already famous songs to recreate the success of “Super Freaky Girl,” which in itself already felt like an attempt to mimic the impact of “Anaconda” in the TikTok era. However, there’s less tension in trying to guard her throne and more comfort in the beauties of motherhood and family on Pink Friday 2. Ultimately, it’s not like Nicki’s necessarily changed in the 13 years since her debut album, but the maturity is a breath of fresh air in her catalog.

It would be impossible to discuss Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj’s biggest collaborations without mentioning Young Money. The label’s biggest single, “BedRock,” featured not just Wayne and Nicki, but other members of the collective, including Drake, Tyga, Jae Millz, and more. The song served as an introduction to the up-and-coming members of the label but resulted in a massive hit single. In addition to Wayne and his signees, Lloyd also contributes a tongue-in-cheek chorus that references The Flintstones. Hip-hop’s fascination with the occult is far from new. Although contentious, rappers have often faced accusations of taking part in activities of the occult to further advance their careers. Much of it has yet to be proven true but the conspiracies continue to spiral online. But, by the mid-’80s, these characteristics typically associated with horror movies bled into hip-hop’s very DNA with the emergence of horrorcore. Although largely considered a niche, it’s a subgenre that had widespread influence on the sound of hip-hop, even during the poppiest of eras for Young Money.
Shortly after the release of Tha Carter III, Lil Wayne embarked on a journey to prop up the talented roster on Young Money. Drake and Nicki Minaj, obviously, exceeded their mentor while Tyga’s maturity accelerated post-“Coconut Juice.” Then, there was the abundance of buzzing artists who delivered underrated bodies of work that floated through the mixtape circuit. Artists like Jae Millz, Lil Twist, Cory Gunz, and Gudda Gudda, who is forever haunted by his verse on “Bedrock,” where he raps, “I got her n***a, grocery bag.” Similar to Nicki Minaj’s sideburn line, no one has an idea what Gudda meant exactly. However, it really shouldn’t be a career-defining moment, especially when he released projects like Guddaville.
The debut project from Gudda Gudda served as an introductory point for the Young Money alum. An underrated mixtape in the midst of the flurry of YMCMB rappers waiting for their turn to shine, Gudda stood tall next to his Young Money compadres including Lil Wayne on numerous tracks.
“Sacrifice,” specifically, became an immediate highlight of the project that transformed the projects of Hollygrove and 9th Ward into a bloodfest. It’s a song that is often overlooked but as we approach the Halloween season, it feels necessary to revisit. The eerie production sets the stage for the track, with a haunting melody and foreboding sounds that create an atmosphere reminiscent of B-List horror movies that gained a cult-like legacy. Gudda Gudda, Mack Maine, Lil Wayne, and Shanell charge the dark undertones of Honorable C.N.O.T.E.’s excellent production, equipped with grueling howls and baleful cackles, which create an instant sense of unease with a hair-raising vocal sample and hellish drum patterns that accentuate the urgency.
Gudda sets the tone with the first verse, where he delivers a descriptive image of a nether region that breeds fear, vengeance, and torment, down to the scent of burning flesh. “I cut your arm off and tell you to reach/ Then I cut your tongue off, and I tell you to speak,” he raps viciously. “My n****as in the circle, in the middle of the bonfire/ They quick to become arsonists and set you on fire.” Although Gudda Gudda might not come across as the most lyrical individual on Young Money or even the song itself, his grisly descriptions rip through the haunting production.

However, it’s Lil Wayne who comes through with a show-stealing verse where he declares himself to be the Wes Craven of hip-hop. If there’s one underemphasized attribute in Lil Wayne’s catalog, it’s his conviction. On “Sacrifice,” his voice is lather by auto-tune in a way that adds further intensity to his delivery. He snarls maniacal threats, painting himself as a villainous mad-hatter with a collection of bodies and a cannibalistic thirst that parallels his desire to become the greatest rapper alive. “But I’m Eastside ’til I reside in the grave/ And you walk in my basement, see the bodies I’m saving/ Bloodbath flow, and it’s time for some bathin’,” he raps.
With the addition of Mack Maine in the final verse, Shanell’s excellent performance ties the song together with a ghostly amount of reverb on her vocals. It’s a ghastly presence that ties the song together, bridging Gudda Gudda’s vengeance-fueled 16 and Lil Wayne’s macabre portrayal of his villainous alter-ego. With Halloween around the corner, “Sacrifice” stands as an underrated cut from the Young Money arsenal, one that feels like the equivalent of a B-List horror movie that only gained a cult following years later.
