What Is Lil Wayne’s Best-Selling Album?

Lil Wayne is undoubtedly one of hip-hop’s most important figures. The self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” has clearly left his mark on the next generation of rappers. His work ethic speaks for itself in his extensive catalog of 13 studio albums, countless mixtapes, and collaborations. The New Orleans native is clearly not slowing down his consistent output anytime soon with the recent release of Welcome 2 ColleGrove, his upcoming second collaborative with 2 Chainz. Lil Wayne also announced that Tha Carter VI will arrive soon, releasing Tha Fix Before Tha VI to fuel the buzz. With an endless amount of music and new material on the way, it begs the question of what Lil Wayne’s best-selling album actually is. That award goes to his sixth studio album, Tha Carter III.

Lil Wayne Triumphed with Tha Carter III

Tha Carter III arrived during a creative peak for Lil Wayne. Weezy was riding the success of the first two installments of Tha Carter, as well as his full-length collaboration with Birdman. There was also the rise of “mixtape Wayne” as he released a host of classic mixtapes, as well as his iconic feature run of 2007 where he appeared on 100 songs in that year alone. By the end of that year, Wayne’s status in hip-hop was scorching hot. He was constantly churning out some of his best material for his solo material and his collaborations. At that point, nothing was stopping Lil Wayne’s dominance.

The majority of Tha Carter III leaked online before it saw an official release, causing major delays. While the leaks caused setbacks for the album’s campaign, it still managed to sell over 1 million copies in its first week, becoming one of the fastest-selling albums in the U.S. at the time. At the time, he joined Eminem and 50 Cent as the only other two rappers to move a million-plus copies in the first week. The Carter III debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking Lil Wayne’s first album to top the chart. He clearly capitalized on his momentum with Tha Carter III, resulting in his biggest album to date. Upon its release, Lil Wayne was unstoppable.

Numerous Hit Singles And Exciting Collaborations

Tha Carter III is Lil Wayne’s best-selling album by a long shot. It was officially certified 8x platinum in 2022. The only other work in his extensive discography that comes remotely close to reaching its stature is Tha Carter IV, which is 5x platinum. Lil Wayne also has numerous double platinum albums, including Tha Carter II, both in installments of I Am Not A Human Being and Tha Carter V. However, not one of Lil Wayne’s albums has reached the commercial heights of Tha Carter III. The success of his sixth studio album can be attributed to the prolific run that preceded it, as well as its numerous hit singles and exciting collaborations.

“Lollipop” is Lil Wayne’s most successful solo single to date and boasts a diamond certification. The Static Major-assisted track was also his first song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The 6x platinum “A Milli” also remains one of his biggest singles to date, peaking at No. 6 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on the rap charts. Songs like the explosive “Got Money” with T-Pain and irresistibly catchy “Mrs. Officer” with Bobby V and Kidd Kidd were also massively successful, contributing to the overall success of Tha Carter III. It also featured the classic “Mr. Carter” with JAY-Z, which made the album even more of a crowning moment for Lil Wayne.

Tha Carter III Is Lil Wayne’s Masterpiece

If Tha Carter II left any doubt in the credibility of Wayne’s claim to being the best rapper alive, then Tha Carter III won over his biggest skeptics. In addition to being his best-selling album, it is also his most critically acclaimed work. Tha Carter III even took over the rap game even with its most underrated tracks, including the Kanye West-produced “Comfortable” and “Let The Beat Build,” the latter of which saw Wayne smoothly ride a constantly progressing instrumental. There was also “Dr. Carter,” which is arguably Lil Wayne’s most creative song ever as he skillfully assumed the role of a doctor that brought hip hop back to life.

Overall, Tha Carter III contained some of Wayne’s most brilliant lyrical moments, iconic tracks, and highest-selling singles. The album, which won Weezy his first three Grammy Awards, stands as the crown jewel of his discography. Tha Carter III marked a moment in time when Lil Wayne ran the rap game, and its status as his biggest release speaks to both Wayne’s commercial peak and his legacy.

Lil Wayne Says “Tha Carter III” “Holds No Significance” To Him

Lil Wayne recently discussed the impact of his sixth studio album, Tha Carter III. Despite the fact that the 2008 LP was a massive success, he revealed that it doesn’t really hold a special place for him. Though the album likely stands out to his fans, he says he can hardly remember it.

“I’m going to be so honest with you: I don’t know Tha Carter IIITha Carter IITha Carter One from Tha Carter IV. And that’s just my God’s honest truth,” he told Rolling Stone. “You could lie, you could ask me [about] such and such song, I wouldn’t even know what we talking about. So it holds no significance to me at all.” When the rapper was asked about the success the album received in 2008, he explained, “I don’t even know if that’s when Tha Carter III came out. That’s how much I don’t know. I work every day, bro — every single day.” He went on to share, “I always look at it as the curse part of the gift and the curse. I believe that [God] blessed me with this amazing mind, but would not give [me] an amazing memory to remember this amazing sh*t.”

The rapper also shared that his Tha Carter series is “Not a favorite at all” for him. He says, “My favorite song is the last one I record. And then I will forget it after the next one I record.” Lil Wayne described how “Every single action, every single word, every single approach,” is motivated by his desire to be known as the best rapper alive. “The reason why I’m still only listening and working on my own shit is because I’m in it. I believe once you start trying to listen to everybody else, you ain’t in it no more. You just happy to be here. But not me. I’m in a gym working on my own game,” he explained.

Lil Wayne also discussed his feelings surrounding a hypothetical Super Bowl halftime performance during the interview. “We wouldn’t even worry about the game after that,” he described. “Everybody knew that one kid [who] was watching the halftime show, but that’d be one of the first Super Bowls that they’ll be like, ‘Both teams were out on the field watching the halftime show.’”

Lil Wayne Praises Missy Elliott: “Before I Even Knew A JAY-Z Existed, I Was Into Missy Elliott”

Lil Wayne sat down with Missy Elliott for the season finale of TV One’s UNCENSORED, which will air on Sunday night. During the discussion, Wayne admits that he was a fan of Elliott before he had even heard of JAY-Z.

“As a kid before Jay — this before I even knew a Jay-Z existed, I was into Missy Elliott,” Wayne remarks, as noted by Bossip. “Oh wow,” Missy responds with a laugh. Afterward, Wayne continues, “Yeah and you know it was because you were able to [sic] you would say things that I would want to say as I’m rapping. You not only made me like—You made me love it. And I became so interested in you. And what happened was I bought the album and did not know that you really was spitting like… You know what I mean. You know I spit that verse to you all the time. So, it was you and Cee-Lo Green was who I would listen to at the time a lot.” He adds that he was also “very much into Noreaga.”

Elsewhere in the discussion, Elliott asks Wayne about how the release of his iconic album, Tha Carter III, shaped his career. He answered: “I think that was probably the first time we noticed — you know what i mean for me, I started really getting that praise you know and I started really accept…Lovin’ it and embracing it. I’m seeing…just seeing people in the street or just from hearing from other artists so really the confidence was just strong.”

“I come from the days we as in artists — we as in Juvenile and B.G. we checking the Billboard magazine to see where this and that. That don’t exist now,” Lil Wayne continued. “When we dropped Tha Block Is Hot it sold like 114,000 or 95,000 the first week and that was the equivalent or the impact of selling a million and I remember I was like, ‘I can’t do nothing but thank God.’”

The interview with Lil Wayne comes after the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced that Missy Elliott is among the artists in the organization’s class of 2023. Other inductees include Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, Chaka Khan, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, and more.

Lil Wayne Reflects To Missy Elliott How “Tha Carter III” Changed His Career

Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III is undoubtedly one of the best hip-hop albums of the 2000s, whether for its quality or its influence. What’s more is that Weezy got the chance to reflect on how the 2008 classic changed his career with his favorite rapper Missy Elliott across the room. Moreover, their conversation will form part of TV One’s upcoming “UNCENSORED” series, which will touch on many different perspectives and careers. Furthermore HipHopDX obtained a clip on Friday (May 5) that provides some insight into the two’s interview. During their talk, he spoke on how the metrics of success have changed, and how Tha Carter III brought him to previously unimaginable heights.

“I think that was the first time for me I started really getting that praise,” Lil Wayne told Missy Elliott. “I started really loving it, embracing it, at that time around that album was when I was seeing people in the street or hearing from other artists, so the confidence was strong.” For those unaware, Tha Carter III became the fourth-ever hip-hop project to sell over a million units in its first week.

Missy Elliot Hears Lil Wayne Reminisce On Tha Carter III

“I come from the days we as in artists — we as in Juvenile and B.G. we checking the Billboard magazine to see where this and that. That don’t exist now,” Lil Wayne continued. “When we dropped Tha Block Is Hot it sold like 114,000 or 95,000 the first week and that was the equivalent or the impact of selling a million and I remember I was like, ‘I can’t do nothing but thank God.’” Overall, it was quite the sweet moment, especially considering how much Missy Elliott and Tunechi admire each other.

That would be why I was making so many sounds,” he said of her talents. “Missy was into the who- brrrrr- the whole heeheeheeHA. And so when Mannie Fresh would get you in the studio, he gon’ remind you ‘hey, you need to throw that ha ha in there.’ I was like ‘man, he want me to do a sound for every damn line!’ And so the ‘Block Burner’ song was my best favorite song because my favorite artist was Missy Elliott.” On her end, the “Lobby” MC praised the Young Money boss’ impact. “You have Birthed a whole generation after you & Its easy for people to acknowledge Some1’s GREATNESS when their no longer around but I want you to know YOU ARE LEGENDARY no matter who thinks differently,” she tweeted. “YOUR BLUEPRINT is PRESENT! No debate.” For more on Missy Elliott and Lil Wayne, return to HNHH.

One Of Lil Wayne’s Signature Hits Has Become His First Song To Be Certified Diamond

One of Lil Wayne‘s signature hits has become his first song to be certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). A Diamond certification denotes over 10 million units sold. Wayne’s 2008 hit “Lollipop” featuring Static Major reached that milestone today, thanks in large part to a digital resurgence in the past two years. It was actually certified both Gold and Platinum (8x) on January 23, 2020 (Certification is not automatic; for an award to be made, the record label must first request certification, which Cash Money and Republic Records did, 12 years after the song’s release).

“Lollipop” recently became the subject of some controversy when it was falsely reported that Wayne denied a request to sample the hit by Atlanta rapper Latto. The report — which came from a parody account — likely arose as a result of Latto’s ongoing feud with Lil Wayne labelmate Nicki Minaj. However, Latto herself debunked the rumor on Twitter, joking, “POV: u don’t even have a song sampling lollipop.”

Meanwhile, another Wayne smash from the same album (Tha Carter III) popped up earlier this week in a cringe-worthy TikTok posted by a Florida Police department. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office used “A Milli” to soundtrack a drug bust video on the app, leading to ridicule on Twitter.
