Tyler, The Creator Sold More Vinyl Records Than Any Other Rapper In 2023

While the large majority of music listeners use streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music as their primary source for listening to music new and old, there are alternatives. For big music fans out there they can own physical copies of their favorite albums on CD or vinyl. This week, Chart Data shared some numbers about how many Vinyl copies of their music artists sold in 2023. As you’d expect one of the most popular artists in the world, Taylor Swift, led the way. She led by quite a large margin with other reports claiming that one in every 15 vinyl records purchased in 2023 was of Swift’s music.

Coming in second place is Lana Del Rey, who dropped her new album Did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean blvd early last year. Coming in at third as both the highest selling rapper and highest selling male artist on vinyl in 2023 is Tyler, The Creator. Much of that likely comes from CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale a deluxe edition of his 2021 album that dropped last year. Vinyl sales and streams of the deluxe version when it dropped caused the album to skyrocket back up to the top of the Billboard 200. Tyler is doubling down on his vinyl success after also leading the way among all rappers in 2022.

Tyler, The Creator Tops Hip-Hop Vinyl Sales Again

Both Kendrick Lamar and Mac Miller also cracked the top 10 for total vinyl sales in 2023. Elsewhere in the top 10 are artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, and more.

Tyler, The Creator was recently confirmed to be part of one of the biggest music festivals around. Earlier this week Coachella announced the lineup for their 2024 edition and Tyler isn’t just performing there, he’s headlining. City Girls Sell 10K Units First Week For “RAW” Amid Claims They Fumbled The Bag

City Girls’ official first week sales for their new album RAW are here, and at least its debut isn’t as bad as people thought it would be, although it’s still surely disappointing and disheartening. Moreover, they sold 10K album-equivalent units in its first week, making their chart entrance at No. 117 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. People initially thought it would be 6K based on projections, which caused media figures to clown the Miami duo. However, they had plenty to express on the matter, and did so recently during their appearance on The Breakfast Club. While sales don’t really matter at the end of the day, it’s easy to say that as a fan, and not as an artist trying to reach many people with your art.

It’s tough times,” JT of the City Girls explained to the radio show’s hosts. “You get what you put in, in this s**t. And I feel like, collectively, we didn’t do what we had to do to promote the album. But if you don’t go hard with promoting your s**t, and putting it in people’s face, it’s like, of course it’s going to miss people.”

City Girls’ RAW‘s First Week Sales Are Here

“Right now, stunting ain’t cool, because people broke,” JT continued, who’s coming out with a solo album soon. “I feel like we have a bad timing thing. I feel like our timing, and our management, is poor. We’ve got poor management, poor timing- like, it’s really never no strategy. We just out here, like, why the f**k are we at The Breakfast Club a week after our thing dropped?” Overall, these are very important questions to ask, and it’s crucial to identify that the City Girls took some responsibility but also looked at factors external to them.

Whatever happened here, it’s clear that they’re somewhat unbothered by these jokes, but still recognize that they need a different approach. Whether that has to do with their team or their own choices is a question that will surely dominate their next planning moves. But one flop doesn’t necessarily make you irrelevant, and as a huge group online and at festivals, they’ll need to really bounce back with something special. On that note, check back in with HNHH for more updates and the latest news on the City Girls.

Juicy J says that rappers need to come together and have a meeting addressing the decline in the sales of music from within the genre over the last year. Taking to social media, he revealed that sales are down 40% over the last year.

“I don’t a lot of people don’t want to hear this, but rap music is down 40%,” he began. “Check the charts. Check the math. What are we, as rappers, producers, composers, going to do about this shit. Because it’s down 40% this year. Do your research. This is a fact.”

This is how we make money.” Fans shared their theories on the cause of a drop in sales on social media in response. Commenting on a post from TheHipHopWolf on Instagram, one user wrote: “Y’all are not making art anymore. A lot of y’all need to relearn what art is then you may be able to create something of value.” Another added: “Sales down but streams aint. Yall gotta demand more from these streaming services. They’re getting rich off the artist and only paying them half a penny.”

Doja Cat’s “Scarlet” Sales Projection Jumps To Over 60k

Doja Cat’s fourth studio album, Scarlet, is now projected to move between 60,000-70,000 units in its first week, according to HitsDailyDouble. The bump is reportedly being bolstered by her “Agora Hills” track, which has climbed up to No. 6 on the Spotify U.S. chart and is following a similar trajectory on Apple Music. Even so, the new album likely won’t reach the top of the Billboard 200.

The figure is also a far cry from her previous effort, Planet Her, which debuted with 109,000 units and a spot at No. 2 on the chart when it released in 2021. Prior to that, Doja’s debut studio album, Amala, peaked at No. 138 in 2018 while her sophomore effort, Hot Pink, reached as high as No. 9.

Scarlet dropped back on Friday, September 22, 2023, with no features. Doja recently discussed the meaning of the controversial cover art for the album while going back and forth with fans over its merits on social media. She explained it’s representative of her overcoming her fears, including how he fans feel about her. “The art I chose for my album is beautiful and I like it a lot,” she revealed on Twitter. “The two spiders signify conquering your fear. None of my album covers had meaning until this album. You not accepting me was a fear I used to have. I don’t care anymore about satisfying you.” Check out the new music video for “Agora Hills” below.

Doja Cat’s “Scarlet” Headed For Top-10 Debut On Billboard 200

Doja Cat’s new album, Scarlet, is reportedly heading for a top-ten debut on the Billboard 200 with 50-55K units first week, according to Chart Data. She dropped the project as her fourth studio album on Friday.

Despite the successful figure, it’s a far cry from her last effort, Planet Her, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and earned 109k sales in the first week. The news comes after her song, “Paint The Town Red,” already went number one on the singles chart. It was her second song to do so.

The new album feels like Doja at her most thematically deliberate. This is even reflected in her cover art choice, which she says represents overcoming her fears. She defended the artwork, which features two spiders, in an interaction with a fan on Twitter, earlier this week. “The art I chose for my album is beautiful and I like it a lot,” she wrote. “The two spiders signify conquering your fear. None of my album covers had meaning until this album. You not accepting me was a fear I used to have. I don’t care anymore about satisfying you.”

Doja Cat’s “Scarlet” Heads For Big Debut

Scarlet is Doja Cat’s first album since 2021’s Planet Her. She began promoting the project with the release of the singles “Attention,” “Demons,” and “Balut.” She’ll be embarking on The Scarlet Tour along with Ice Spice and Doechii later this year. The first show is set for October 31, 2023, at Chase Center in San Francisco and the last will be held on December 13, 2023, at United Center in Chicago. Russ Questions Burna Boy’s U.S. First Week Sales For “I Told Them…”

Burna Boy cemented himself as one of the biggest international artists of the past few years, and that’s not because he’s not from the United States. Not only does he find a lot of traction in those markets, but fans all over the world celebrate his talents and skill. Recently, the Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer released his latest album, I Told Them…, and it debuted in the U.S. with 21K sales in its first week. While that’s definitely a successful benchmark for someone of his caliber, some expressed disappointment with these numbers and surprise that it didn’t sell more. Even rapper Russ had to step in on social media to give his thoughts, pointing to Burna’s worldwide appeal and success.

“If Burna Boy is doin 21k (in America) and sellin out arenas in America as well, how come artists who sell more than that (in America) aren’t doing arenas (in America) ?” Russ asked under DJ Akademiks’ coverage of the sales numbers for I Told Them… “Take a wild guess [crying-laughing emoji].” Of course, many pointed out that these sales are just in U.S. markets, and don’t reflect the attention he garnered in other countries. With this statement, the Atlanta-based MC posits that numbers aren’t everything, whether that’s artistically or commercially.

In fact, Russ has his own issues with album numbers, as he recently claimed that Billboard disqualified sales from his recent project SANTIAGO. “Billboard & Luminate took away ANOTHER 4,000 of my REAL sales over the weekend,” the 30-year-old tweeted. “Making that 10,000 sales total they took away from me while allowing major labels to fake their streams and sales and do monopolistic merch bundles. Only major labels are allowed to do merch bundles because the only approved vendor is a major label vendor. These numbers and charts are made up. The impact however is not. Shoutout to the fans.”

Meanwhile, he actually sold 42K album-equivalent units, which is quite impressive nonetheless. Conversations around numbers expect the highest feasible success, and nine times out of ten, they don’t forgive. Still, despite his complaints, the main takeaway is that any support from fans you get weighs much more than the commercial value you chase after. On that note, stick around on HNHH for the latest news and updates on Russ and Burna Boy.

Burna Boy’s “I Told Them” First-Week Sales Shock Social Media Users

Burna Boy dropped off his new LP, I Told Them…, at the end of last month. His seventh studio album features various high-profile features, from the likes of J. Cole, 21 Savage, Dave, RZA, and more. Now, the first-weeks sales numbers are in, and they’ve left some social media users confused. The album sold 21K album-equivalent units in the U.S. in its first week. Many are weighing in claiming that they thought the album would have sold more, while others say he did pretty good.

“I expected burna to do more than that ngl,” one Instagram commenter writes. “Considering how big he is this an L,” another claims. Though some are shocked by the numbers, others are taking the opportunity to emphasize the fact that they only reflect U.S. sales, and Burna Boy has a large following internationally. “I won’t call it a flop until I see his sales outside of America,” one user says. “Wasn’t expecting him to do huge sales in America.”

Regardless, it’s clear that Burna Boy continues to rise to the top, and get high praise from his peers. Last month, he discussed his collaboration with J. Cole, revealing that while meeting in the studio he compared him to one of the most iconic rappers of all time. According to Burna Boy, J. Cole said “This n***a’s Tupac reincarnated in Africa.”

During a recent interview, the Nigerian-born performer revealed that I Told Them… is dedicated to those back at home who didn’t believe in him. “This one is for the part of my own home and the people in my own home who didn’t believe or doubt it, or still doubt, or any type of thing,” he explained. “It’s fun to tell people something is true, and they doubt, and then they end up seeing it. There’s no greater feeling.” Keep an eye on HNHH for more updates on Burna Boy.

Russ Claims Billboard Is Disqualifying Sales Of His New Album

While it can often seem like fans are the only ones who care about sales numbers and chart placement, sometimes artists do too. There have been plenty of notable moments from artists like DJ Khaled and 6ix9ine who get upset publicly when their music doesn’t hit number one. But this week there’s another artist who feels cheated, Russ. His new album Santiago just hit the Billboard 200 for the first time and it debuted at number 12 with a pretty impressive 42k sold. He even managed to debut 6 spots higher than Quavo’s new album Rocket Power. But because he was initially projected to sell over 50k and debut in the top 10, the “What They Want” rapper feels cheated.

“Billboard & Luminate took away ANOTHER 4,000 of my REAL sales over the weekend making that 10,000 sales total they took away from me while allowing major labels to fake their streams and sales and do monopolistic merch bundles (only major labels are allowed to do merch bundles because the only approved vendor is a major label vendor),” Russ ranted in a recent tweet. He ended his initial statement claiming that the charts don’t matter as much as fan support does. “These numbers and charts are made up. The impact however is not. Shoutout to the fans.”

Russ Claims Billboard Slighted Him 10k Sales

This isn’t the only time Russ has taken aim at music industry numbers recently. Earlier this year he tried explaining to his fans how Spotify’s monthly listeners stat is misleading. He called the presentation “a façade” on account of how many monthly listeners are users who only accidentally stumbled onto one song on a playlist and aren’t actually really “listeners.”

It’s easy to see why a debut outside the top 10 would be disappointing for Russ. His only other albums to hit the Billboard 200 have all debuted in the top 10. His albums Zoo and Shake The Snow Globe both hit the top 5. What do you think of Russ calling out Billboard for the allegedly missing sales? Let us know in the comment section below.

Foot Locker Blames Consumers Amid Poor Sales And Plummeting Stock Prices

Foot Locker is one of the biggest retailers in the world when it comes to clothing and sneakers. Overall, if you are a sneakerhead, you have probably copped shoes from them before. However, in recent years, you may have stopped going to their brick-and-mortar stores. After all, the pandemic made it a lot harder to cop shoes. Instead, consumers have resorted to online stores. Additionally, people don’t have as much money to spend as they used to, which has made it difficult for stores to truly remain prosperous.

As it turns out, Foot Locker is going through that exact scenario. According to a new sales report, the company is down almost 10 percent on the year in terms of earnings. Moreover, this has led to a 33 percent decline in their stock price, according to Forbes. While there are many reasons why this is the case, FL seems to be blaming consumers. In their report, they say “consumer softness” and “shrink” are some of the reasons why they are having problems.

Foot Locker Sees Declines

“Consumer Softness” essentially means that a lot of consumers do not want to purchase goods unless they are discounted. Additionally, “shrink” is a term that describes issues such as theft and return fraud. While these are certainly issues, there is no doubt that fans are not resonating with the Foot Locker business model. Times are changing, and a lot of retailers are beginning to learn that the hard way.

In fact, Foot Locker recently revealed that it would be closing 400 stores. People just aren’t going to physical stores as much as they used to, which has forced many companies into decisions such as this one. Let us know what you think of the situation, in the comments section below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the sneaker world.
