Eminem “Got Away” With Disses Because He’s White, Kurupt Says

The Slim Shady hot takes just keep on coming from the rap world, and one artist has a new angle to consider. Kurupt recently expressed that Eminem “got away” with dissing many other artists because he’s white. Moreover, he sat down with The Art of Dialogue and was asked about Melle Mel saying that Em’s only considered top five because of his skin color, comments which he made on the same platform. Furthermore, they related to Billboard and VIBE’s recent list of the top 50 rappers of all time. While the West Coast MC disagreed and said his whiteness doesn’t diminish the sheer skill of his mic and pen, he did state that Mel has a point.

“That’s his opinion. That’s not our opinion,” the “Who Ride Wit Us” rapper remarked. “The way Dr. Dre took Eminem subject matter-wise is one thing; the way Eminem rocked — he’s a battle rapper, so he’s Hip Hop, no matter what color he is. Dr. Dre took him in this way, so that has no bearing on his skill. His skills are renowned.” Still, he acknowledged that Mel is a legend in his own right.

Kurupt On Eminem’s White Privilege In Disses

“But that’s Melle Mel’s feel on it,” Kurupt went on. “Melle Mel is an icon of Hip Hop … Remember, he’s the original Hip Hop so Melle Mel speaks from that standpoint. For my generation, hey, Eminem is our monster. His color is irrelevant. He does have a point, Eminem being white. He might have got away with a lot of things, like him talking about all these different artists and s**t, you know what I’m saying? And not having no backlash to where he’s blackballed.

“But not from his skill,” he continued. “[Being] white had nothing to do with his skills. But he might have got away with a lot of things. S**t, we got away with a lot of things once we became successful! Once you’re successful, you can do whatever you f***ing want, and the game accepts it because they make money off of what you’re doing, so they give you that pass.” Marshall Mathers’ acknowledgement of his privilege, as well as his artistic feuds, are well-documented at this point. Kevin Gates Defends Eminem After Melle Mel’s Criticism: “He In My Top 5”

Kevin Gates came to Eminem’s defense during an interview with TMZ, earlier this week, revealing that the legendary rapper is one of his favorites of all time. The comments come after Melle Mel argued that Eminem is only considered an all-time great because he’s white. Mel made the remarks during a controversial interview with The Art of Dialogue in which he also criticized Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne.

“He in my top 5,” Kevin Gates told the outlet. “He the truth. Who can make a song like ’Stan’?” When asked further about Mel’s comments, he added: “Listen, I don’t get in all of that. It’s only two types of people. It’s real people, and it’s fake people. Real people do real things, and fake people do fake things.” Gates isn’t the only one to come to Eminem’s defense. 50 Cent, Fat Joe, Papoose, and more have all spoken out in disagreement with Mel’s comments.

As for Mel’s original argument, he had been discussing Billboard and Vibe‘s recent Top 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time list. Regarding Eminem’s placement, he said: “Obviously, he’s a capable rapper. If we was talkin’ about sales, he sold more than everybody, if you talkin’ about rhyme style, okay, he got a rhyme style. But he’s white! He’s white! So now, if Eminem was just another n***a like all the rest of us, would he be Top 5 on that list? When a n***a that can rhyme just as good as him is [No.] 35? That had records and all that. He’s 35. He’s white.”

“So, you know, anybody can be as mad as they want. They can feel how they wanna feel,” Mel continued. “If you don’t think that race plays a part in the equation in how great he is—I heard one of the dudes that’s down with him, [Royce Da 5’9”], I heard he’s just as good as Eminem. Twitter lit on fire after Melle Mel said that Eminem’s only considered a top five rapper because he’s white. “Obviously, he’s a capable rapper. After Mel made these comments, people took to social media to vehemently disagree or dig at Marshall even further. N***a be like, ‘Melle Mel is greater than Elvis. Melle Mel is the greatest white man that has ever lived. He came up with a culture, he was a part of a culture that changed the whole world.
