Microsoft Reveals that Janet Jackson’s ‘Rhythm Nation’ Could Crash Some Laptop Hard Drives

Janet Jackson

Millions of people have been turning up to Janet Jackson‘s ‘Rhythm Nation’ for over three decades, but some laptop computers apparently are not fans of the chart-topper. Last week, Microsoft revealed a bizarre vulnerability in which playing the 1989 hit can cause certain laptops to crash.

The bizarre story apparently began back when multiple users contacted Windows XP product support to report issues with their devices, mostly the widely used 5400-RPM laptop hard drive that was sold around 2005. It’s common to set up a laboratory experiment on a device or software application whenever there are multiple reports of an issue, such as the reported issue with ‘Rhythm Nation’ and the laptops. The laboratory experiment found that the song didn’t just necessarily crash the laptop that it was being played on, but also nearby laptops that were using the same hard drive model.

Raymond Chen at Microsoft explained it in a blog as such: “the song contained one of the natural resonant frequencies for the model of 5400 rpm laptop hard drives that they and other manufacturers used.”

Since then, the manufacturer has added a custom filter in the audio pipeline that detected and removed the offending frequencies during audio playback. Additionally, this hard drive was a spinning disk hard drive and most spinning hard drives have been gradually phased out in favor of solid-state drives over the years, but as Chen notes, they still persist in a host of devices around the world.

Ironically, the news comes within a few days of Apple’s announcement of a serious security vulnerability (along with a software update) for iPhones, iPads and Macs that could potentially allow attackers to take complete control of these devices.

Perhaps listening to music on cassette or record players is truly the only safe bet anymore.

Tevin Campbell Discusses Struggles and Triumphs of Being a Gay Man in the R&B Industry

Tevin Campbell

Tevin Campbell may be known for his hit 90s song “Can We Talk” and this week, he definitely talked, opening up about what it was like to be a queer man in the R&B industry in the 90s and how it has changed from then to now.

In an interview with host Janine Rubenstein on the PEOPLE Every Day podcast, Campbell confirmed that he identifies as a gay man, something that likely did not come as a surprise to many of his fans as earlier this year, he tweeted (and later deleted) the phrase “Tevin is…” followed by a rainbow flag emoji.

Campbell discussed some of the struggles of being a child celebrity, noting that he never really hid his sexuality from anyone close to him, saying that “I didn’t hide anything about me. I didn’t try to act a certain way or anything. You just couldn’t be [gay] back then.”

He explained that many of his songs were just R&B songs, but the industry tends to make songs heteronormative.

He noted that despite growing up in the public eye, that he was lucky to have made it while claiming that a lot of child stars “don’t make it.” He then went on to note that “a lot of us do,” saying that the fact that he has is one of the reasons that he has embraced himself. (Campbell first began his music career at age 12.)

He noted that when he did Hairspray in 2005, it was the first time that he was around a significant number of LGBTQ people who were living their best lives and that’s how he became more comfortable with his sexual identity.

He said that major stars such as Lil Nas X and Frank Ocean have helped increase LGBTQ representation in the R&B and music industries in general, but still noting that there is a lot of work when it comes to representation and acceptance in the industry.

He also dished on some of the general industry turmoil including a decades-old semi-beef with Usher, who was also mentioned as a possible artist to sing “Can we Talk” back in the 1990s. (He said that he and Usher are on good terms and there are no hard feelings.)

He also said that he likes watching the “Can we Talk” challenges on TikTok today and that he is excited about the future of R&B, citing artists such as Frank Ocean and Jasmine Sullivan.

He left listeners with the parting advice to love themselves, both the good and the bad.

Mary J Blige and Diddy Discuss How Pop Music Tried to”Kill” R&B on IG Live

Mary J Blige

She may be the queen of R&B, but Mary J Blige expressed some concerns about the current state of her kingdom (queendom?) on a spirited discussion with Diddy on IG live in which she claims that pop music killed the R&B genre.

Diddy took to IG live on this week via Hollywood Unlocked after he had asked his followers: “Who killed R&B?” Mary J Blige joined him for a live session (which is archived here) to discuss her thoughts on the genre’s current state and how it got there.

Of R&B being “killed,” she said that “You can’t kill something that’s in our DNA. It’s going to keep transitioning from generation to generation to generation,” noting how many people her age have passed down a love of the genre to their children.

She did however, note that many mainstream radio stations have tried to kill R&B, or at least change the genre to be more in line with mainstream taste.

She first thanked the radio stations around the country that play and support R&B music before explaining that radio stations tend to jump on the bandwagon and play whatever is popular.

She said that the radio stations call it “popular music” when artists like Justin Timberlake and Adele get ahold of it, before explaining that “it [R&B] has been popular music.”

She stated that R&B can’t be killed, explaining that “we have to keep ourselves alive. You can’t kill us because we’re already in the system, in the bloodline, the DNA.”

She cited many popular R&B artists including Chris Brown, Chaka Khan, Etta James, Usher, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Jazmine Sullivan, and SWV that have not been “killed” and are keeping the genre alive.

She also encouraged R&B fans not to be “sheep” and get angry at the radio stations, but rather be shepherds and promote the genre and request more R&B on mainstream radio.

Mary J Blige’s “Good Morning Gorgeous Tour” starts September 17.

Rick Ross Responds Labor Violations Investigation At Wingstop Locations: “There Will Be Mistakes…”

Rick Ross Reveals Codeine Abuse Caused Seizures

Earlier this week it was reported that Rick Ross and his family had been fined by the Department of Labor for labor violations occurring at 5 of his Wingstop locations in Mississippi.

Ross was subject to $114,427 worth of fines, including over $50k in back pay and over $60k in penalties. Violations included making employees pay for uniforms and background checks, taking money out of employees checks if registers were short, leaving some employees making less than the federallly mandated $7.25/hr. A 15 year old even worked until 10p.m., 3 hours past the 7p.m. cut off time for employees under 18.

Earlier today, August 17, Ross took to Instagram where he addressed the reports in a video, taking full accountability for them.

“I’ma take time to address something. When you running a business, there will be mistakes,” Ross said. “But as the biggest boss, you never make the same mistake twice. You see, accountability. Taking accountability is big when you’re the biggest. And remember this: most successful people don’t take stumbling as a setback but actually, a stepping stone to greater things, you heard me? Let’s be great.”

Following the investigation, DOL Division District Director Audrey Hall said in a statement “restaurant industry employees work hard, often for low wages, and many depend on every dollar earned to make ends meet. The law prevents Boss Wing Enterprises LLC from shifting operating costs to workers by deducting the costs of uniforms, cash register shortages or training expenses, or to allow a worker’s pay to fall below the minimum wage rate.”

Kanye Reportedly Asked For His Yeezy GAP Line To Be Displayed In Trash Bags

Ye Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga

Kanye has always had an unconventional approach to his creative endeavors. Whether it be his music, music videos, film, or even clothing, its safe to say Ye thinks outside of the box. Fans of his Yeezy GAP x Balenciaga line were excited to hear that the collection would be releasing in store and would have surprise location drops in different cities around the U.S.

One aspect of the drop that got people really talking was how all the clothes were in big trash bags, only sorted by item, not color or size. This meant that people would have to search for a specific item until they got the size that they wanted.

A recent tweet by a GAP store employee adds some much needed clarification as to why the clothes ranging from $60 as much as $300 are being put in trash bags instead of on hangers. According to the tweet, Ye saw that the clothes were originally on hangers, got mad, and demanded they be displayed in trash cans.

“This is how they are selling Yeezy GAP. The sales associate said Ye got mad when he saw they had it on hangers and this is how he wanted it. They won’t help you find ur size too, you just have to just dig through everything,” the twitter user said.

We’re not sure what Kanye is exactly trying to say with his clothes being displayed in trash cans. Maybe he thinks the clothes are trash? But even continuing with the theme of trash, when the collection dropped last month, the clothes were put in dumpsters for the surprise location drop in Los Angeles.

50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather Apparently End Decade Long Beef

FloydMayweatherPromises$,toWhoeverTrollsCenttheBest

The decade long beef between Floyd Mayweather and 50 Cent seems to have come to a close. In a recent Breakfast Club interview, 50 was asked about him and Mayweather’s relationship and revealed that Mo’Nique took 10 minutes out of her set in Las Vegas during SuperBowl weekend to insist that 50 and Floyd make up.

“He don’t need me, I don’t need him,” 50 said as to why he and Floyd were in no rush to make amends. Me and him get into an argument and it can go on for a lot longer because we don’t really need each other,” Fif added. He also added that he still calls Floyd “champ.”

When asked how the initial converstion between the two of them went, Fif replied “Yo, why it take so long for you to pull up on me fam? Crazy… why you say all that stuff about me? Whatchu been doing?”

On Sunday, Fif took to Instagram where he shared a photo of Floyd with his Tycoon stamp imprinted on the picture, seemingly confirming the former boxing champ’s appearance at 50’s annual Tycoon Weekend this month in Houston.

“Yeah Champ said he gonne pull up on me for Tycoon so you know we gonna go crazy,” Fif said in the caption. “Big bags coming out TMT floydmayweather. BOOM.”

Fif and Mayweather were good friends until 2012 after Mayweather was released from jail. However, they had a financial falling out and would then trade shots with each other on social media. One of the more famous moments from there beef was when 50 Cent challenged Floyd to read one page of a Harry Potter book, later changed to Cat In The Hat. Charlamagne Tha God would then add fuel to the fire by sharing a 10 second radio drop that Floyd struggled to get through, further proving 50’s point about the boxing legend not being able to read.

Wack 100 Calls Blacc Sam “Selfish” For Removing Nipsey Hussle Feature From The Game’s “Drillmatic” Album

m

The Game released his long awaited 10th studio album, DRILLMATIC: Heart vs. Mind on Friday, August 12. The 30 song project features over 20 features throughout the tracklist. Since its release the main topic of conversation surrounding the album has been the 10 minute long diss track directed towards Eminem, entitled “Black Slim Shady.” Now it looks like there is another topic of conversation after The Game’s manager Wack 100 called out Nipsey Hussle’s brother, Blacc Sam, for demanding that Nip’s feature on the album be removed.

Wack called Blacc Sam out during a recent Clubhouse convo where he was asked about a missing song from the tracklist, “World Tours,” featuring Nipsey. Wack said it was removed shortly before the album was released after getting an email from his lawyer. He called Sam “selfish” for demanding such.

“I got an email from my attorney, at about 7:30, an hour and a half before it dropped. Nipsey’s brother put in a demand for it to be pulled,” said Wack.

Wack went on to say, “These n*ggas be in their feelings. You notice you got Meek Mill and a bunch of people over there Wack really don’t see eye to eye with… Whoever [The Game] work with, he work with. His shit ain’t my shit. The Game done drove around L.A., he’s been the biggest Nipsey supporter ever.”

He went on to say that Sam does not understand the music industry and let his emotions get in front of business. He then said that Sam has missed many opportunities to release new music from his late brother but has failed to do such.

“The Game, Nipsey song does nothing but work towards a remembrance of Nipsey. He’s not here to drop music or promote music, so it’s just remembrance of Nipsey. So at the end of the day, I think where Blacc Sam goes wrong at, he’s being selfish with his anger … probably towards me. But he’s totally disregarding the acknowledgement that Game has given Nipsey since he’s been gone.”

According to TMZ, sources close to Nipsey’s music handlers say that Atlantic Records was clueless about the song until the albums track list announcement last week. Nipsey’s music handlers then contacted lawyers inquiring about any paperwork agreement for the song. Apparently there was no agreement and a cease and desist was issued.

Tommy Lee Shares Picture of his Genitals on Facebook

Tommy Lee

Rocker Tommy Lee is no stranger to courting attention and on Thursday, he took to social media to do just that in a very big way.

The Mötley Crüe drummer posted a naked picture at approximately 3:52 am EST on Thursday morning to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Taken at a downward angle, it shows Lee naked sitting on a bench in a corner. He captioned the photo simply “Ooooopppsss” without any further explanation. A censored version of the NSFW photo can be seen here.

Even as the shocking photo racked up thousands of comments and shares, it remained active for at least nine hours on Instagram despite what appears to be clear violation standards. (It has since been deleted from the platform although it is unclear if the platform or Lee himself removed the content.)

As of early Friday morning, the photo is still up and active on both Facebook and Twitter. As to be expected, the comments do not disappoint with many making comparisons of the artist’s genitals to that of a drumstick. Shortly after posting the now-infamous photo, Lee shared a (slightly) less racy photo of a man with naked buttocks facing an elephant with a caption “How do you breathe through that little thing?”

Many users have also questioned why there appears to be a double standard for Lee’s content compared to their content that has been removed from the platforms.
