Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign “VULTURES 2” Album Review

Kanye West’s art is impossible to engage with solely at face value, something that his collaborative album series with Ty Dolla $ign, VULTURES, proves in a pretty ugly way. Their latest release, VULTURES 2, is drawing conversation online for reasons related only tangentially to the music it contains. Uncleared samples, verses allegedly generated by artificial intelligence (Ye-I?), unfulfilled release dates followed by surprise launches, and absolutely abysmal mixing on this LP are taking precedence over any considerations of songwriting, creativity, performance, or any other elements you would look for in a new body of work. Of course, that’s not counting all the politically and socially abhorrent narratives that Ty and Ye (mostly and especially Ye) have been involved in or propagated since… well, we’ll let you pick your starting point. After all, even TLOP’s “new Kanye” is old Kanye by today’s standards.

However, what makes VULTURES 2 such a lackluster and disappointing release, even compared to the already dull and unsatisfying first installment, is a shocking lack of effort, originality, and sense of purpose. Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign released half-baked demo editions of these songs on this album, and regardless of whether the ideas behind these mixes are satisfying or not, it contributes to this project feeling like a scam tracklist from a random YouTube page, not the result of deliberate studio time after multiple delays already. If you scrape through quietly mixed verses, muddy rhythmic tones, mid-performance audio shifts, and head-scratching panning, there is certainly some quality throughout this tracklist and even some thematic depth. Still, not only is this achievement scant, but it feels damningly derivative from past (and recent) work.

The “New” Sounds Of VULTURES 2

To start with VULTURES 2‘s highs, there are some engaging, vivid, and appropriately grand excursions into the dramatic, raw, and nocturnal hip-hop/R&B that Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign have championed throughout their collaborations. The big highlight is “SLIDE,” with its THX synths opening the track in an immediate and captivating fashion. The hectic and enveloping percussion makes for one of the most uniquely groovy and enjoyable bounces on the album. It also succeeds at achieving this quality standard in some softer moments on occasion, such as cohesive electronic embellishments to a vocal sample on “FOREVER.” Producers like London on da Track, Wheezy, Fred again.., James Blake, BoogzDaBeast, AyoAA, and The Legendary Traxster make up a massive list of co-producers, but this doesn’t translate into ambitious soundscapes.

Rather, the fact that Kanye West is actually absent from many beats here speaks to how thrown-together and un-curated many of these production ideas feel. For example, nothing comes of a rock sample on “ISABELLA. Cuts like “PROMOTION” and “DEAD” contain some of the most generic synth tones and drum sounds you’ll hear all year. Other Ye albums definitely felt like too many chefs were overcooking their meals in the kitchen, but this time around, we’re not comparing it to last year’s album – we’re comparing it to what we just got in February. Through that lens, there’s even less of a reason to act impressed by Donda and Jesus Is King retreads. Speaking of repetition, “FRIED” is an embarrassing attempt to copy the appeal behind “CARNIVAL” with even worse lyrics, and “TIME MOVING SLOW” sounds like an alternate demo version to the already meager “Flowers” off Donda 2.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign’s Pessimistic Performances

Just how VULTURES 2‘s most generic missteps overshadow its sonic ambition, Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s thematic goals on the album fall victim to some of their most poorly written hedonistic material about money, women, the rap game, and passing partners to their friends like a piece of meat. Similar to VULTURES 1, Ty is a more consistent and skilled performer in this second round thanks to his melodic dominance and despite Ye taking even more of a center stage. The first installment, however, Ty held higher and more dependable peaks far more consistently. The Chicago rapper has some passable verses on here like the first half of “530” and chemistry-filled trade-offs between him, Ty, and Lil Baby on “FOREVER ROLLING,” where he actually tries to engage with wordplay and provides a clear narrative. But alas, his hollow pen is mostly his least inspired and most irrelevant yet.

While guests like Lil Durk and Lil Wayne try to sharpen things up and follow Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s lead, their contributions don’t really amount to much beyond a short but solid reprieve from the monotony. Playboi Carti and Don Toliver go a bit further, providing much-needed vocal dynamism to the eerie “FIELD TRIP.” Yet no one stands out the way that guests did on albums like Donda because of how rickety the foundations for their appearances are. One definite exception is “RIVER,” with progressive production and a charismatic Young Thug verse that (if only for its inclusion) speaks to Kanye’s themes of freedom and justice on the track. Ye’s passionate vocal performance and lyricism are a rare highlight here, and Ty Dolla $ign leads the outro with heavenly vocals.

A Carcass Being Picked Apart

Sadly, despite occasional glimpses of loving care, VULTURES 2‘s poorly executed formulas don’t earn the benefit of the doubt sequel projects usually get. It takes two steps back from VULTURES 1, which at least had novelty and controversy at its side. Now, it feels like an easy paycheck that doesn’t entice you with its bravado: it just expects you to punch in and praise it for being the same album Kanye West’s made for half a decade. The filler is also staggering, as “HUSBAND” is an unnecessary isolation of the second half of “LIFESTYLE” and “SKY CITY” is a Yandhi-era leak whose official release absolutely guts its previous structure. At least “BOMB” provides a glimmer of West family wholesomeness, even if the discussions of family contrast lazily and messily with disgustingly indulgent misogyny.

That’s perhaps the most salient failure of VULTURES 2: it’s all of Kanye West’s expected vices with his least compelling attempts at contrasting them with his values. The album’s shoddy release, perhaps the shoddiest in Ye’s entire catalog, represents this unwell egomania. As for the moments on here that do have something to say, he and Ty Dolla $ign lack originality, notable production, and noteworthy performances. The last exception to mention is the final verse on “MY SOUL,” delivered by Ty Dolla $ign’s incarcerated brother, which most overtly embodies the album’s “theme”: freedom. But they only focus for a blink of an eye. Elsewhere, it’s a Jersey-house-trap-moody-synth corpse whose scandals, successes, and self-satisfactions not only turn the duo’s few meaningful ideas into ghosts but place shockingly little importance on the album experience that Ye was once so revered for. If they don’t care about their music, why should we?

Ty Dolla Sign Announces “VULTURES” Listening Event In Korea

VULTURES 1 was supposed to be the first installment in a trilogy, and Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign (for whatever reason) have failed to follow up on this series. But don’t fret, fans: a new announcement indicates that the hype cycle is back, and that new music could arrive pretty soon. Moreover, Ty recently announced on social media that he and Ye will host a VULTURES listening event in Korea (presumably South… right?) on Friday, August 23 of this year. This follows the Los Angeles artist’s previous claims that VULTURES 2 will have a “new sound,” further fueling fan excitement.

“We got all the songs,” the “Dream Girl” singer said of his next collaborative album with Kanye West in a Billboard interview. “Basically, it’s just like, ‘How can we get it there? How can we go bigger than the first album?’ Certain people will probably expect you to just do the same exact sound. But that sound’s already out.” “The album is almost done and could be released any day now,” he reportedly expressed per NFR Podcast. Of course, fans are also taking all this with a massive grain of salt, as there have been far too many disappointments and missed teased release dates (again, perhaps out of their control) in the past.

Ty Dolla Sign & Kanye West Are Taking VULTURES To Korea… For Now

Elsewhere, Ty Dolla Sign also spoke of his relationship with Ye, particularly in regard to this rollout and his many, many controversies. “Ye is the best artist of this generation, besides me, and I don’t give a f**k about what people were talking about,” Ty shared. “I know my n***a. He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met. Just with my analysis of how it goes with him, he goes all the way to the top. And something may happen and he’ll say [something people find offensive] -– and then people [get] right back, you know. Because this s**t is undeniable.”

Speaking of which, Kanye West is facing multiple lawsuits right now for assault, sexual harassment, and labor exploitation, among other things. As such, this might not be the best time to pick VULTURES back up again. But then again, when would be a good time for Ye to pop out considering all he did and expressed? Like Ty Dolla Sign said, fans will still line back up to see what the latest update is.

Report: Touring Giants Live Nation and AEG Decline Kanye West for a Tour

Kanye West George Floyd

Kanye West hoped to take his Vultures album with Ty Dolla $ign on the road. Unfortunately for him, Live Nation and AEG won’t assist.

According to Hits Daily Double, insiders state neither touring company will move forward with requests on a Ye tour that is being pitched by his agent Cara Lewis. The decision comes despite Ye moving over 10,000 tickets for his events, like the one in Chicago.

It is noted that Chicago companies Jam Productions and SPKRBX collaborated on the United Center booking days before the release.

Ye and Ty Dolla $ign are being sued by the Donna Summer estate for using the icon’s “I Feel Love” in the creation of “Good (Don’t Die).”

The suit is led by Summer’s husband, Bruce Sandano, stating the interpolation was not approved due to Ye’s “controversial history.”

Ye submitted a request for clearance, but it was denied on Feb. 3, 2024, in both written and phone communications. The song was submitted for clearance at Universal Music Enterprises as an alternative but was once again denied.

The estate is now seeking damages of $150,000 for each infringement.

Earlier this week, after Adidas announced a new stock drop of Yeezy sneakers at the end of the month, Kanye hit the net with a message stating he was sued.

“Not only are they putting out fake colorways that are not approved, they are suing me for $250 million,” Ye said. “And they also not paying me for these shoes they are putting out that has my name on it.

“They are using contract clauses and 50 years of business experience to rape an artist – one of y’all favorite artists – right in front of y’all in broad daylight.”

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Boast “VULTURES 1” Success Without Apple Music Support

Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s VULTURES 1 is still getting plenty of play, despite how streaming platforms were not so quick to promote it. Moreover, Ye published a video on his Instagram Story of his full-length collaborator remarking on how Apple Music never featured them on most of their promotional features on their page for new releases, which they typically do for almost all big releases. Yet “CARNIVAL” with Rich The Kid and Playboi Carti is the highest-charting song on Apple Music right now. Given that the album went No. 1 on Billboard for another week after its release, this consistent commercial success is unsurprising.

However, it’s also important to note that Kanye West is not only one of the biggest artists alive -– and thus needs no promotion to make a splash -– but that the duo devised a promotional strategy of their own. Their Vultures listening parties across the U.S. and Europe netted them heaps of cash and built up the album across a couple of months of hype. In addition, we have Ye’s antisemitic crusade to consider as a massive and sadly unfinished story that boosted this collaboration’s profile. It’s very understandable that streaming services didn’t promote it at every turn, but equally unsurprising is how their notoriety and reach sidestepped that.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Flaunt Their No. 1 Despite Apple Music’s Lack Of Promo

Another factor to consider is that across February, whether or not you could listen to VULTURES 1 depended on which streamer you used and what day you tried to play it. The album disappeared from Spotify and Apple Music multiple times thanks mostly to distribution difficulties, as well as sample clearance issues that already plagued the release. Whether or not you find its commercial success in spite of this to be impressive or a sad reality probably depends on whether you buy into the controversies attached to it. Regardless, Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign fought their way in with loads of fans behind them.

Meanwhile, with two more installments set for release (which we aren’t holding our breath on considering the chaotic launch of the first one) and a Ye solo album facing conflicting reports, who knows what they’ll do in March? VULTURES 2, plus 3 in April, could be better than the first one, or it could be just as divisive. But odds are that whatever long-form effort they drop will still hit big. Another day, another lawsuit for Kanye West. Ye and his Vultures partner, Ty Dolla $ign, are being sued by the Donna Summer estate for using the icon’s “I Feel Love” in the creation of “Good (Don’t Die).”

The suit is led by Summer’s husband, Bruce Sandano, stating the interpolation was not approved due to Ye’s “controversial history.”

Ty Dolla Sign Reacts To “Vultures” Keeping No. 1 Spot For Another Week

While a lot of conversation and acclaim around Vultures surrounds Kanye West, Ty Dolla $ign is just as important -– if not more -– to the album’s quality. Moreover, the project just cemented itself as the number one album on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the U.S. for another week following its chart-topping debut. It narrowly beat out another big album, Yeat’s 2093, for the top spot, and all artists have plenty of reason to celebrate. In fact, Ty recently took to Twitter on Sunday (February 25) to celebrate this accolade with a selfie holding up a single finger. “Not the 2,” he captioned his pic.

Furthermore, Ty Dolla Sign’s been enjoying a lot of success as a result of his collaborative album with Kanye West. His numbers are greater than they’ve ever been, and more importantly, many folks finally gave him the full-length flowers that were usually reserved to guest appearances. Regardless, the Los Angeles native hasn’t escaped a lot of the controversy behind Vultures, although most of that falls on Ye’s antisemitism, career relationships, and far-right ties. Despite the context around his success, he made this choice, and it hasn’t stopped even ardent Kanye critics from praising his contributions.

Ty Dolla Sign Reacts To Vultures‘ Second Week At No. 1

While it’s a matter of personal preference, there’s a strong argument for Ty Dolla Sign being the most consistently compelling and skillful part of Vultures. Future installments (which Timbaland says are on the way) might reflect this too, or perhaps Kanye West will step things up a notch. Either way, there’s a lot of excitement for this project’s future, which is supposed to bring Vultures 2 next week if initial teases are to be believed. It’s a Ye rollout, so we aren’t holding our breath.

Whether or not these future installments land on streaming services (and face removal again), the “Blasé” creative made his mark. As one of the most commercially successful independent albums ever, Vultures is a feat regardless of your take on its quality and its Chicago creator’s behavior. Let’s see what they follow it up with. For more news and the latest updates on Ty Dolla Sign and Vultures, check back in with HNHH.

“Vultures” Beats Yeat’s “2093” For No. 1, Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Get Second Week On Top

The Billboard 200 albums chart dated March 2 might go down as one of the most competitive of 2024 when it comes to its two top spots. Despite previous reports, Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative album Vultures 1 ended up beating out Yeat’s 2093 for the number one spot. Moreover, Vultures spends its second week atop the charts with around 75,000 equivalent album units in its second week in the U.S., according to Billboard themselves and Luminate, an independent data provider. On the other hand, 2093 debuts at the No. 2 spot with around 70,000 album equivalent units, which is the California native’s best-performing week yet on the chart.

As for 2093, this album had a couple of versions come out which contributed to this chart performance. First, the project’s core edition released on Friday, February 16, with 22 songs and a whole lot of praise from casuals and die-hards alike. Then, Yeat dropped two new songs for it the following day, these being “As We Speak” with Drake and “Never quit.” Finally, on February 21, he dropped a version of the LP with four additional tracks exclusively on his website.

Vultures & 2093 Lead The Billboard 200 This Week

Meanwhile, Vultures has been through so many changes, alterations, and cycles that it’s hard to tell what it’s current status is. The good news for fans is that it’s back on Apple Music after briefly disappearing on Saturday (February 24). However, as of writing this article, there are two versions of the project available: one with a capitalized title and one with an uncapitalized title. It’s been really bizarre to witness all these removals, disputes, and of course all the controversial content behind Ye’s rollout antics and statements.

In fact, there’s a Vultures cut that isn’t on Apple Music, but returned to Spotify after it was removed from both streamers for unrightfully sampling Donna Summer. But all that aside, and no matter what you think of these Billboard placements, these are still great achievements to celebrate. The “Breathe” MC had his best commercial performance yet, and the “BURN” duo continue to make this one of the most commercially successful independent releases ever. For more news and the latest updates on Kanye West, Ty Dolla Sign, and Yeat, come back to HNHH.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign’s “GOOD (DON’T DIE)” Back On Spotify After Sample Issues

Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative album Vultures has gone through a lot of hoops and obstacles to finally land on streaming services. Moreover, one of the biggest issues that the Yeezy-donning duo faced was that of sample clearances, and one of these cases relates to a legendary track. For those unaware, they used Donna Summer’s classic “I Feel Love” on their song “GOOD (DON’T DIE),” which the legendary artist’s estate claimed they didn’t clear properly. As such, the track disappeared off Spotify, but on Saturday (February 24), fans noticed that it’s back on the tracklist, although they still have a lot of questions.

For one, when you actually click on “GOOD (DON’T DIE)” on Vultures 1‘s tracklist, the cover art that appears in your Spotify player will appear with an odd, amateurish, digitally illustrated cover -– at least, as of writing this article. It’s unclear if this is just a glitch, an intentional choice, or a mistake to be rectified soon, but either way, it points to this song’s return as incomplete, or at least contested. Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign are currently in Europe for some listening events, so we don’t know how on top of all this they are. Considering how fickle these changes and developments may be… enjoy “GOOD (DON’T DIE)” while you can, Spotify users. It might disappear as soon as you read this.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Bring Donna Summer Track Back To Spotify’s Vultures 1

Furthermore, another big issue with Vultures‘ release was its distribution. Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign were able to release it independently via Yeezy and with the help of a generous online distributor. They ended up making massive profits as a result, and fans lauded this as a massive success. Still, when looking at the antisemitic and far-right-tied reasons for this difficulty in securing a distributor, it did make fans lament this conflictive situation.

Regardless, fans are still bumping Vultures heavily, especially since we don’t really know what could happen with the album next. Yeat’s 2093 is expected to overtake its top spot on the Billboard charts this week, but all fans want is a consistent way to listen to the album. Let’s see what the future holds for this evolving and always scrutinized LP. For more news and the latest updates on Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign, stay logged into HNHH.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign’s Apple Music Bio Mentions Anthony Fantano, Fans Think It’s A Hack

As if Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign didn’t face enough issues already with releasing their album Vultures on Apple Music, it seems like someone hacked their artist bio. Either that, or they wanted to make the best troll artist description they could come up with while taking shots at the Internet’s busiest music nerd. Moreover, on their artist page on the streaming platform under the moniker ¥$, their bio is a bizarre and most likely fake Q&A excerpt that goes over some curious claims, including references to music critic Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop. Hats off to whichever fan was cheeky enough to include this and do so successfully, or to Ye and Ty Dolla to taking very legitimate criticism of their work (particularly the former’s) with some sense of humor.

We’ll include the whole bio here in case it really is fake and Apple Music takes it down soon. Before that, this is notable because Anthony Fantano called Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures “unreviewable” for its quality and the antisemitic background behind it. That caused an absolute uproar online from Ye stans and melonheads alike. Whether you agree or not, it’s fair to say that things definitely went a little too far in folks’ responses to this.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign Raise Eyebrows With Likely Hacked Apple Music Bio

“In the artist’s words:,” Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s bio begins. “‘Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.’ ¥$’s first music experience as a group was listening to our second single ‘Cool beat 1’ and working on the critically acclaimed song ‘Back to Me.’” Also, the bio asks the duo their three all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and it mentions The College Dropout, Vultures, and Featuring Ty Dolla $ign. Here’s the first Fantano reference, made when “answering” a question about their favorite song of theirs on the platform. “‘CARNIVAL’ is the most popular Ye Dolla song by far. As stated by the YouTube famous music reviewer Anthony Fantano stated, ‘This song is absolutely amazing and is a shining light in Ye and Ty’s respective catalogues.’” If the backlash didn’t spoil it, he never said this in the first place.

Meanwhile, here’s how the “bio” closes out. The bio “asks”: “‘What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?’” Their “response”: “For one, being the #1 collaboration album worldwide in more countries than ever know. Secondly, being the best selling and most successful independent album on streaming platforms, and third being the first album to be known Unreviewable by Midtano.” Yikes. Check out their Apple Music page to see if it’s still there. Otherwise, log back into HNHH for the latest news and updates on Kanye West, Ty Dolla Sign, and Anthony Fantano.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign React Meekly To “Vultures” Going Number One

Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign’s collaborative album Vultures just went number one on the Billboard charts despite a lot of release issues plaguing its rollout, plus all the antisemitic bigotry associated with it. All that aside, it seems like the album really connected with fans, and both artists seemingly reacted to this news. Of course, they’ve both boasted about it going number one in a lot fo countries before this Billboard confirmation. “It’s a beautiful time,” Ye stated to Complex, whereas Ty posted a video of himself saying, “Huh? Hm? S**t…” to the haters while holding up one index finger.

Vultures sold around 148,000 units in its first week, and this marks Ty Dolla Sign’s first-ever number one album. On the other hand, this is Kanye West’s eleventh number one album, and he technically hasn’t broken this consecutive streak of chart-toppers if you don’t count his G.O.O.D. Music compilation from 2012 or KIDS SEE GHOSTS with Kid Cudi. Even though they’re both huge artists, they should be grateful for having all this work out in their favor, as they are extremely lucky. Still, when you have as much money and infamy as they do, sample clearance issues become much easier to handle.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla Sign’s Vultures 1 Goes No. 1: The Latter Reacts

Another big problem with Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign’s first collab’s release was its distribution method, as original distributor FUGA took it off streaming services temporarily. “On Friday, February 9, 2024, a long-standing FUGA client delivered the album Vultures 1 through the platform’s automated processes, violating our service agreement,” a statement from the company read. “Therefore, FUGA is actively working with its DSP partners and the client to remove Vultures 1 from our systems.” This resolved itself promptly, though.

Meanwhile, the duo is now looking forward to some European listening events, kicking off in Italy and (at press time) wrapping up in Paris. Perhaps this will be the opportunity they have to celebrate this number one and to celebrate getting a new distributor for it. What do you think about Vultures 1 and how the next installments will shape up? Let us know in the comments and come back to HNHH for the latest on Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign.
