Travis Scott’s Giza Concert Canceled by the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate For ‘Strange Rituals’

Two years ago, Travis Scott was under fire when ten concert goers were trampled to death at his Astroworld Tour. Following a crowd surge the tragedy was followed by multiple lawsuits blaming Travis for the unfortunate event.

Now Travis has been barred from performing at the Giza pyramids after being accused of going against Egyptian traditions.

Aljazeera reports:

A concert by the US rapper Travis Scott at the Giza pyramids has been banned by the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate after an online campaign against the hip-hop heavyweight.

International music stars often perform at the base of Egypt’s famed pyramids near the capital, Cairo, and the powerful musicians union rarely opposes such events. However, in recent years, it has spearheaded a fight against musical genres deemed improper in Egypt with rap a frequent target.

Egypt has also increasingly opposed what it views as a “rewriting” of its history, finding fault with African-American movements that claim cultural affiliation with the ancient Egyptian pharaohs.

The musicians syndicate, which oversees all matters relating to live or recorded music in the Arab world’s most populous nation, said in a statement on Tuesday that Scott’s concert would “go against our traditions”.

The union said it does not intervene in any musical performances so long as they “do not undermine the ancestral customs and traditions of the Egyptian people”.

After examining social media content and “the artist’s positions, the syndicate found images and documented information on the strange rituals he practices, which go against our traditions”, the statement said without specifying which rituals it was referring to.

Travis Scott and Live Nation Reps Deny Egypt Show is Cancelled Amid Rumors of ‘Strange Rituals’

Travis Scott is the subject of rumors that his show in front of the pyramids in Egypt has been canceled. According to outlets in Egypt, The Egyptian Syndicate of Musical Professions, who provide permits, nixed the show.

“Since the General Syndicate is part of the fabric of this beloved country it is keen on its stability and refuses to tamper with societal values and Egyptian and Arab customs,” the statement reads.

The Syndicate added, “Based on research and documented information about strange rituals at Travis’s concerts that are inconsistent with our authentic societal values and traditions, the Board of Directors has decided to cancel the license issued to hold this type of concert that contradicts the cultural identity of the Egyptian people.”

Representatives from Live Nation have responded, stating, “There have been no changes to Travis Scott’s show in Egypt; any reports to the contrary are false. We can’t wait to celebrate ‘Utopia’ with you in Egypt!”

Reps for Scott also reached out to Hypebeast, denying the show is canceled.

Travis Scott announced in celebration of his highly anticipated new album, Utopia, he would perform a special show in front of the Pyramids of Egypt on July 28th. The Pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, will be the awe-inspiring backdrop for this immersive experience.

Alongside this announcement, Travis Scott has also revealed that ‘Utopia’ will feature five distinct artworks, adding to the album’s creative depth and visual storytelling. Pre-orders for the ‘Utopia’ vinyl, CD, and merchandise box sets are now available to engage his fans further. Is Travis Scott’s Egypt ‘Utopia’ Concert Canceled?

Travis Scott’s upcoming fourth studio album, Utopia, has the world talking, as it’s his first full-length album in five years. It’s also his first since the Astroworld Festival tragedy of 2021. Scott plans to make his comeback in Egypt, where he would perform Utopia in full at the Giza pyramids.

There were reports, though, that the event would not go on as planned due to cultural concerns from the Egyptian Musicians’ Syndicate. However, Live Nation now says that is untrue, telling Pitchfork, “There have been no changes to Travis Scott’s show in Egypt; any reports to the contrary are false. We can’t wait to celebrate ‘Utopia’ with you in Egypt!”

The Egyptian Musicians’ Syndicate issued a statement this morning (July 18) noting that portions of Scott’s performances may not fall in line with traditional Egyptian and Arab customs, and they will therefore not grant Scott the necessary permits for the show. That said, it’s not clear if the group actually has the authority to cancel the performance.

You can read the full statement from Dr. Mohamed Abdullah, an official spokesman of the Musicians’ Syndicate, below (via Egypt Today).

“Regarding the concert scheduled to be held on 28th July at the Pyramids area in Giza by American rapper Travis Scott, the Musicians’ Syndicate, as the entity responsible for issuing licenses for music and singing concerts in Egypt, in coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture represented by the Censorship Authority for Artistic Works and the Ministry of Labor, emphasizes the necessity of considering security aspects and obtaining approvals from the relevant authorities as a top priority when organizing concerts. This is to ensure the safety and protection of the audience.

While the Musicians’ Syndicate has welcomed various art forms and concerts in recent months, it has set conditions and regulations to safeguard the customs and traditions inherited by the Egyptian people.

As the Musicians’ Syndicate is part of the fabric of our beloved country, it works towards its stability and security and rejects any tampering with the societal values, customs, and traditions of Egypt and the Arab world. After examining social media opinions and feedback, as well as the news circulating on search engines and social media platforms, which included authenticated images and information about peculiar rituals performed by the star during his performance, contradicting our authentic societal values and traditions, the Syndicate’s president and board of directors have decided to cancel the license issued for hosting this type of concert, which goes against the cultural identity of the Egyptian people.”

Utopia is out 7/28 via Epic. Find more information here.

Is The Weeknd On Travis Scott’s ‘Utopia’ Album?

Travis Scott fans have been more tantalized than ever over the past few weeks, as the trickle of Utopia teases increased to a steady stream. While a solid release date has yet to be announced, it does seem that one is nearing, as Travis has taken out billboards that seemed to reveal some significant date, promoted the album in his Nike campaign with John McEnroe, and even gave his hometown Houston Astros a private listening. Over the weekend, Travis also announced an upcoming show at the Giza pyramids in Egypt, which is just extravagant enough to suggest that the album is due soon.

But there’s still little-to-no info about what — or who — will actually be on it whenever it does drop. Bad Bunny confirmed a collaboration with Travis recently after Travis himself appeared to tease the song during a party in Monaco, but no other collaborators had been confirmed — until Friday, when XO Records co-founder Cash posted a photo on Instagram of the now-infamous Utopia briefcase and a caption bearing both Travis and The Weeknd’s handles. It sure sounds like The Weeknd will be featured on the album, reuniting the two artists on an album for the first time since 2018’s Astroworld, when they collaborated on “Wake Up.” They also appeared together on “Power Is Power” from the Game Of Thrones companion soundtrack, For The Throne, in 2019 alongside SZA.

Travis Scott Is Transforming Egypt’s Pyramids Of Giza Into ‘Utopia’ For A ‘Once In A Lifetime’ Concert

Travis Scott previewed Utopia for Houston Astros players in May. “It’s on the way now,” Scott told Fox 26’s Mark Berman at the time. Roughly two months on, Scott announced he’s on the way to the Pyramids Of Giza in Egypt.

“UTOPIA LIVE AT THE PYRAMIDS TICKETS AND UTOPIA PACK On TRAVISSCOTT.COM,” the Houston rapper posted to his Instagram. A separate Instagram post teases, “Utopia is wherever you are.” Similarly, he tweeted, “UTOPIA LIVE AT THE PYRAMIDS CANT WAITTTT TO SEE YA.”

The “once in a lifetime gig,” as it’s described on Scott’s official website, is scheduled for July 28. Tickets were made available here, but both the Premium and VIP Golden Circle options are sold out.

Scott has yet to confirm a release date for his highly anticipated Utopia album, his first since 2018’s Astroworld, but it’s available for pre-order here. The online shop boasts five different “Topia Pack” bundles ranging from $50 to $150.”

Over the weekend, Scott headlined Wireless Festival 2023 at London’s Finsbury Park on Saturday, July 8, before headlining Rolling Loud Germany in Munich on Sunday, July 9. Per setlist.fm, Scott opened both sets with his recent collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert, “Aye,” from Lil Uzi Vert’s new album, Pink Tape.

Scott is scheduled to headline Rolling Loud Miami on Saturday, July 22.

Lil Uzi Vert is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
