Tommy Richman Teases New Song “Devil Is A Lie” And It Slaps

Tommy Richman has been making music for nearly a decade, but 2024 is his year. The singer broke out in a big way with the single “Million Dollar Baby.” Not only was a viral sensation on TikTok, but it crossed over and went number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Richman is now an R&B star. The pressure now, of course, is to prove that he’s not a one hit wonder. We’ve seen lots of “Million Dollar Baby” singers come and go. The next Richman single is going to be crucial, and it sounds like he’s got it under control.

Richman posted a teaser of his upcoming song, “Devil Is a Lie,” on TikTok on June 6. The brief clip sees him not only singing the song, but doing so on what appears to be a set for the music video. He sings in front of a car, and and posts up from a different angle where a camera can be seen moving past him. It’s led fans to believe that “Devil Is a Lie” is not only coming soon, but will have an official video attached as well. The song itself is ridiculously catchy. It captures the same bouncy, hooky energy of Richman’s first big smash, but with a throwback 2000’s feel. Many fans have rightfully pointed out that the singer seems to be channeling vintage Neptunes. The beat definitely sounds like something Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo would have cooked up for Nelly back in the day.

Tommy Richman Has Another Hit In The Works

This makes perfect sense, given Tommy Richman’s affiliation with another R&B star, Brent Fayiaz. He had a standout appearance on the Faiyaz mixtape Larger Than Life, which also revived the 2000s sound they both grew up idolizing. Richman even signed to Faiyaz’s creative agency, ISO Supremacy, furthering their like-mindedness. It’s also worth noting that Richman hails from Virginia, which is where artists like Faiyaz and the Neptunes originated. The singer spoke on the impact of VA’s musical history on his own working process during a 2023 interview with Miami New Times.

“There’s a lot of passion through the scene back home,” Richman explained. “And I feel like it’s because a lot of people don’t get a fair shake. It’s really hard to have your voice heard there. That’s probably why a lot of people from Virginia left, like Pharrell and Timbaland. It’s kind of key for an artist to leave their nest. That way, you can appreciate where you come from.” Richman wants honor the legacy of these artists, and “Devil Is a Lie” suggests he’s doing a great job.

Tommy Richman’s upbringing in Woodbridge, Virginia, a suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., was notably devoid of music. Growing up in a household where his father, a drum teacher, and his legally deaf mother didn’t necessarily foster a musical environment, Richman discovered his passion for music independently, according to an interview with Lyrical Lemonade. Despite the absence of melodies at home, he felt a profound connection to music and decided to pursue it on his own. Richman’s formative years were subsequently deeply influenced by the vibrant music scene of the Washington metropolitan area. Early on, he began receiving vocal lessons, dedicating himself to refining his musical talents and absorbing insights from the musicians around him. Additionally, the immersion in the local music community shaped Tommy Richman’s artistic journey. Furthermore, it fueled his development as a musician.

Tommy Richman’s Rise To Stardom

Richman made his debut in 2016 with the track “Ballin’ Stalin.” Since then, he has released several more singles, including: “Sand Man,” “Tu Pax,” “Chrono Trigger,” and “Bad Boys.” Tommy Richman isn’t afraid to bend, shift, and switch genres, which is becoming increasingly evident. Inspired by a diverse spectrum of artists, including Mötley Crüe, KISS, Lil Wayne, and 50 Cent, Richman’s creative process is deeply rooted in emotional intuition. This also allows him to effortlessly transition between alternative vibes and R&B tones within his music. His tracks exemplify his genuine approach.

“Electrify Tonight” captivates with its rich, inviting melody, while “Games” exudes infectious energy, showcasing Tommy Richman’s raw authenticity and musical versatility. These songs are a testament to his ability to connect with listeners on a profound level. His versatile musical talent quickly caught the attention of multi-platinum artist Brent Faiyaz. By August 2023, Richman had signed with Faiyaz’s label, Iso Supremacy, in collaboration with PULSE Records. This new partnership led to an exciting opportunity for him to open for Faiyaz on his F*ck the World, It’s a Wasteland Tour later that year. A significant moment also came when Richman, alongside FELIX!, was featured on Brent Faiyaz’s track “Upset,” marking Tommy Richman’s breakthrough in the music industry. Hailing from Virginia, this level of success was exceptional.

Reflecting on his journey in an interview with Miami New Times, Tommy Richman expressed the challenges of getting recognition in his hometown. He stated: “There’s a lot of passion through the scene back home, and I feel like it’s because a lot of people don’t get a fair shake. It’s really hard to have your voice heard there. That’s probably why a lot of people from Virginia left, like Pharrell and Timbaland. It’s kind of key for an artist to leave their nest. That way, you can appreciate where you come from.”

He also went on to reminisce about the time he spent making music in his mother’s basement and expressed his gratitude for everyone who had helped him get to where he is now. “When I would work in my mother’s basement for hours on tracks, and she’d be telling me to get a real job like most moms, I’d be like, ‘No, no, no, it’s gonna work out,’” he said. “And now, to be recognized by other hardworking people, I’m just very grateful, and it definitely inspires me to keep going.”

Kendrick Lamar And Tommy Richman Neck And Neck For Top Spot On Next Week’s Hot 100

The biggest beef in hip-hop has already proven to be quite lucrative for the artists at its core. Only two of the songs where Drake and Kendrick Lamar directly diss each other have hit the hot 100 so far. The first was “Like That” which landed on Future & Metro Boomin’s new album WE DON’T TRUST YOU back in March. The shots Kendrick threw out combined with the impressive sales of the song itself led to the track debuting at the very top spot on the Hot 100, where it stayed for multiple weeks. It was the second beef-spawning track to debut at the top spot this year following Megan Thee Stallion’s “HISS.”

Now Kendrick Lamar is aiming for yet another number one debut spawning from the beef, but he isn’t getting it without a fight. His biggest challenger is Tommy Richman, who just debuted his new song “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” at number two on this week’s Hot 100. This weeks chart leader “Fortnight” by Taylor Swift and Post Malone is expected to slip down the charts. That leaves Kendrick’s first track addressing Drake head on “euphoria” to battle with Richman’s “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” which is expected to get a boost in streaming this week. Chart projections between the pair are currently too close to call.

Kendrick Lamar And Tommy Richman Battling For Number One

“Like That” has the potential to become one of Kendrick’s biggest Hot 100 hits of all time. Billboard already has the song listed as his 28th biggest Hot 100 hit after just 5 weeks. The song returned to the top 10 of the chart this week. That came after Taylor owned the entirety of the chart’s peak on last week’s edition.

It’s An ‘Eras Tour’ Hot 100 As Taylor Swift Stays At No. 1 And Sabrina Carpenter Hits A New High This Week

Every week, Billboard unveils the top 10 songs on the latest Hot 100 chart. The most recent rankings, for the chart dated May 11, are out now, so let’s run down who had this week’s biggest hits.

10. Taylor Swift — “Down Bad”

Last week, Taylor Swift had the top 14 songs on the Hot 100. She’s cooled off a bit this week, with only three songs in the top 10, including “Down Bad.”

9. Taylor Swift — “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart”

“I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” is one of the other two to survive in the region from Week 1 to 2. It’s the album’s second-most streamed song on Spotify so far with over 117 million plays.

8. Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar — “Like That”

Kendrick Lamar has released what feels like a thousand Drake diss tracks since “Like That,” but this one is still going strong in the top 10 this week. This is one of many songs returning to the top 10 this week following Swift’s dominant frame.

7. Hozier — “Too Sweet”

“Too Sweet” is officially the biggest song of Hozier’s career, as it topped the Hot 100 for a week in April. It’s no longer at No. 1 but it’s sticking around at No. 7 this week.

6. Teddy Swims — “Lose Control”

Swims hasn’t lost control has his breakout hit, a former No. 1, remains near the top of the Hot 100 chart.

5. Benson Boone — “Beautiful Things”

Boone’s “Beautiful Things” was the biggest non-Swift song on last week’s Hot 100, a status it didn’t manage to maintain this week thanks to some milestone achievements from other artists.

4. Sabrina Carpenter — “Espresso”

It’s starting to feel like the summer of Sabrina. After Carpenter’s “Espresso” became her first top-10 Hot 100 hit in April, it’s now her first top-5 song with its No. 4 placement this week. Between Swift and Carpenter, songs from performers on The Eras Tour make up four of the top 10 songs.

3. Shaboozey — “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”

Shaboozey has been blowing up since landing an appearance on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album. His own “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has become a hit in its own right and is now his first top-10 song on the Hot 100.

2. Tommy Richman — “Million Dollar Baby”

As for Richman, this is his first Hot 100 hit period, and it debuted all the way up at No. 2. This is the highest debut for a song with no prior Hot 100 experience since Oliver Anthony’s “Rich Men North Of Richmond” opened at No. 1 last summer.

1. Taylor Swift — “Fortnight” Feat. Post Malone

Despite all the impressive newcomers, it’s a pair of familiar faces occupying the top spot this week. Swift and Malone’s The Tortured Poets Department single debuted at No. 1 last week, and now it has held onto its place for a second frame.

Who Is Tommy Richman? Meet The ‘Million Dollar Baby’ Singer

Last week, I had no clue who Tommy Richman is. Odds are, if you’re reading this, neither did you. Today, his name is practically inescapable for music fans on social media, who are being told his new song “Million Dollar Baby” is on-pace for a top-ten Hot 100 debut next week (this is likely premature, but not unimpressive in itself). So, who is Tommy Richman and why is “Million Dollar Baby” suddenly everywhere you look (including further down in this post)?

Tommy Richman is a Virginia-based artist whose first big credit was on Brent Faiyaz’s Larger Than Life track “Upset” alongside FELIX. Last August, Billboard reported he was signed to Faiyaz’s label, Iso Supremacy, a joint venture with PULSE Records, and he joined Faiyaz on his 2023 F*ck The World, It’s A Wasteland Tour. Since then, he’s release an EP, The Rush and a double single, Soulcrusher, but the snippet of “Million Dollar Baby” he teased online caught fire, likely contributing to its explosive debut.

In an August interview with Miami New Times, Richman humbly expressed his gratitude for his newfound success, saying, “When I would work in my mother’s basement for hours on tracks, and she’d be telling me to get a real job like most moms, I’d be like, ‘No, no, no, it’s gonna work out.’ And now, to be recognized by other hardworking people, I’m just very grateful, and it definitely inspires me to keep going.”

Tommy Richman Becomes A “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” On New Single: Stream

Tommy Richman is on the cusp of an absolute blow-up, and one of the leading factors behind that is his brand-new single, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY.” Moreover, it’s a very creative blend of classic Southern trap stylings and more light and poppy vocal performances and melodic leads. In the case of this particular track, it comments on the slow but steady build-up that the DMV native has experienced over the past few years, which finally seem to have gotten to a boiling point. We’ve previously covered the dual single release of “SOULCRUSHER” and “WHAT DO U LIKE,” plus his appearance on Brent Faiyaz’s recent album, Larger Than Life.

Furthermore, Tommy Richman seems poised to keep expanding on this unique style, and will surely find new ways to tinker with it, capitalize on its best elements, and continue to expand outside of it. We don’t want to put him in a box, but this is definitely a wave that he could ride with ease given the catchy, loose, and above all fun feeling that “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” will give you. Thanks to some occasional and subtle cowbell hits, the sharp snares and hi-hats, and the funky bass patterns, this song is able to make something sound pretty hard and quite sophisticated at the same time. It’s an odd mix that ultimately works to its cheeky benefit, especially with added wailing synths, a very simple lead melody, high-pitched vocals, and background vocal samples.

While we specialize in covering artists that in hip-hop and R&B, it is always a fun time covering talents that blur the lines between the two. Case and point, Tommy Richman. He is a resident of Virginia and he really is a unique case. However, he embraces the fact that he does not pigeonhole himself to one genre. In a chat with Lyrical Lemonade, he explains how he likes to create music. “Honestly man, I just try to make cool s*** for people but more so for me. It’s not about the gimmicks or cliches for me.”

Tommy continues, “I wanna make stuff that’s palatable and listenable but also just s*** I like and am interested in.” That is when the interviewer dug a little deeper and questioned him about how he wants the listener to feel. “I personally think this is a silly question. I don’t really care what people think about it. People can feel however they want – if they think it’s cool then great and if they don’t, f*** it!”

The multi-talent goes on, “I make the music that I feel and connect with and if it connects with someone else, then great.” That is the case for his new song “GHOULS N GHOSTS” with a feature from Paco and production from Jonah Roy. It seems its connecting with listeners as each performer fits nicely over the Luigi’s Mansion-esque beat. The song has a similar melody that you might hear on a Brent Faiyaz song. Which makes sense considering Tommy had some placements on his recent LP.

What are your thoughts on this brand-new single, “GHOULS N GHOSTS,” by Tommy Richman, Paco, and Jonah Roy? Is this one of the best tracks Tommy has ever made, why or why not?
