Tommy Richman Drops “WHITNEY” One Week Ahead Of Upcoming LP

Tommy Richman has been upsetting but also impressing a lot of listeners in 2024. He’s been in the professional music business for longer than that. However, this has really been his coming out party without a doubt. The release of “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” has propelled that for sure, but he’s proven to be much more than that. That’s something he’s looking to show the doubters, according to a statement obtained from Uproxx. “I’ve been building up my discography for years. I’m not a one-hit-wonder”. What he’s also looking dispel the belief that he has one mode of singing, which is that expressive falsetto delivery. While it’s still prevalent, Tommy Richman does switch up the production style on “WHITNEY”.

This is presumably the last promotional track we are going to receive before the release of his next album, COYOTE. The project is slated to drop on next Friday, September 27, and is going to be carrying 11 songs. As of now, it looks like “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE”, his most recent record outside of “WHITNEY”, is serving as the lead-off cut. That means that “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” and “DEVIL IS A LIE” are being axed from the tracklist. But we will just have wait and see. On “WHITNEY”, Tommy is once again delivering a more heartbreaking cut, as it seems that this woman he’s talking about is not as ideal as he once thought. As we mentioned though, the production choice is different, as he goes in synth-pop/nu-wave direction with a driving series of punchy drums. Things really take off vocally on the chorus too, as Tommy wails away across it.

Quotable Lyrics:

Why do things get odd?
I don’t know, I said, b****, I don’t know
So, let me just understand this, understand you, yeah
I can’t think of so many ways to try to give you some chances lately
How many times I tried to be so simple, baby
So simple, baby

Tommy Richman Releases New Single Titled “Whitney”

Tommy Richman Drops New Single "DEVIL IS A LIE"

Tommy Richman continues adding on to his monumental summer run with the release of his latest single, “WHITNEY” along with an accompanying visualizer.

he new song is the second release from Tommy’s heavily anticipated debut album, COYOTE, out September 27th via ISO Supremacy/PULSE Records, and follows his run of sold-out live shows in D.C., New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as well as his late-night TV debut performance of “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “WHITNEY” highlights the break-out star’s sonic versatility, coming as a modern-pop anthem that blends R&B, indie, and soul with an irresistibly funky disco-groove and bassline.

Alternating between his signature falsetto and a lower-tone cadence, Tommy’s heartfelt vocals masterfully capture his raw emotions over the track’s warm sweeping synth chords and bright analog-synth melodies, delivering another personal and intimate look into the journey that inspired COYOTE. Last month, Tommy gave fans the first glimpse of what to expect from his upcoming album with the release of “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE,” a downtempo heartstring-pulling alt-R&B ballad.

Tommy Richman Delivers An Emotional Ballad With “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE”

Tommy Richman has become both a darling and a mortal enemy in the eyes of hip-hop purists. The DMV/Woodbridge, Virginia singer and rapper has been making waves in the underground/indie scene for a few years now. Since being taken under by R&B mainstay Brent Faiyaz, his career has really blossomed. He’s now a superstar in the making and like we said earlier there are some mixed feelings towards his growing popularity. “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” is the record that’s been ruffling some feathers, but he is clearly not looking to fit into any mold. Tommy Richman is showing that with each new release, including on “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE”.

This single number four or five from his next full-length project COYOTE, which will be out on September 27. Part of the reason that Tommy Richman doesn’t really conform to any sort of stereotype are his unique production choices and wild vocal delivery. His high pitch notes are something that no one could really replicate in our opinion. It might sound goofy and too over the top to some, but to us its a breath of fresh air. His upper register allows for the emotional weight of the song to really shine through. You can hear the wishful thinking in his voice somehow, as he dreams about wanting a girl to be in his life. Check out the single with the link below.

Maybe thеre’s a chance if I pray every day, I’ma get what I want to
I dreamed last night, you’re in my head
You’re always sticking with me even when I don’t want you
I’m treating you right, not doing you wrong
I know you won’t forget the night you spent so long
Looking at my face, my eyes are a maze

Tommy Richman Releases New Single “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE” Ahead of Debut Album ‘COYOTE’

Tommy Richman Releases New Single "THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE" Ahead of Debut Album 'COYOTE'

Following the announcement of his highly anticipated debut album, COYOTE, set for release on Sept. 27th via ISO Supremacy/PULSE Record, Tommy Richman continues his monumental summer run with the release of his latest single, “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE,” accompanied by a music video.

Teased last week on TikTok, “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE” is the first official release from COYOTE. The downtempo, heartstring-pulling alt-R&B ballad shifts from the upbeat funk of his viral hits “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” and “DEVIL IS A LIE.” Richman’s melodic vocal layers float over a vintage drum-machine groove, hazy chord progression, and howling synths, showcasing his creative range as he reflects on past heartbreak.

The music video, directed by Lonewolf, features Tommy cruising through the desert with a female companion, reminiscing about their shared moments. As scenic mountain shots transition to night scenes of serenading under the stars, reality hits hard, and Tommy awakens from his dream among a pack of wolves.

Having teased the single on his TikTok last week, “THOUGHT YOU WERE THE ONE” comes as the first official release off COYOTE, giving fans an early taste of the project Tommy announced as album of the year during his late-night TV debut performance of “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

The new single comes as a downtempo heartstring-pulling alt-R&B ballad, steering away from the upbeat funk sonics of his previous dance-rooted viral hits “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” and “DEVIL IS A LIE.” Tommy’s melodic vocal layers floating over the song’s vintage drum-machine groove, hazy chord progression, and howling synth lead highlight the creative maverick’s boundless artistic range as he reflects on previous heartbreak.

Directed by Lonewolf, the new music video shows Tommy cruising through the desert with a female companion, reminiscing about the lovely moments they once shared. Scenic mountain shots alternate with footage of Tommy serenading his dream girl under the night sky, until he’s hit with the heavy reality of the situation and wakes up from his dream among a pack of wolves. An eerie clip of a lone wolf overlooking the highway closes out the video, symbolizing Tommy’s journey so far. “It’s a great example of slowing things down a little bit… It’s not always about the hype songs. I’m versatile,” says Tommy.

After exploding into stardom with his viral hit “Million Dollar Baby,” emerging singer Tommy Richman has announced his debut album, Coyote, which is due for release on September 27 via Brent Faiyaz’s ISO Supremacy and Pulse Records. The DMV native got his first exposure to the limelight on Faiyaz’s Larger Than Life standout “Upset,” and has since become a star in his own right, with “Million Dollar Baby” even making its way into former President Barack Obama’s celebrated summer playlist alongside other breakouts from the likes of Charli XCX, Shaboozey, and Tems.

Rather than resting on his laurels, Richman followed up the success of “Million Dollar Baby” with “Devil Is A Lie,” a second single that will presumably appear on Coyote. While it didn’t reach the same heights as Richman’s breakout (which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100), it turned out to be a success in its own right, peaking at No. 32 on the Hot 100. Prior to the release of Coyote, Richman plans to give fans a sneak peek at his future musical direction with the Before The Desert mini-tour, which will hit four cities — Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and his native Washington, DC — in early September.

Coyote is due 9/27 via ISO/Pulse. You can find more information here.

Rising star Tommy Richman has officially announced the release of his highly anticipated debut album, COYOTE, set to drop on Sept. 27th via ISO Supremacy/PULSE Records. The announcement comes alongside the release of the latest COYOTE visual trailer, further fueling excitement for what is shaping up to be a monumental year for the artist.

Richman has been making waves with his hit singles “DEVIL IS A LIE” and “MILLION DOLLAR BABY,” both of which have charted on Billboard’s Hot 100. “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” has solidified its status as a cultural phenomenon, currently holding the #1 spot on Mediabase’s Top 40 and Billboard’s Pop Airplay Chart. The track also topped Billboard’s Global 200 chart and TikTok’s Billboard Top 50, recently surpassing 1 billion global streams. Celebrated as the song of the summer, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” was included in former President Barack Obama’s 2024 Summer Playlist.

COYOTE marks Richman’s debut album following his signing with fellow DMV-native Brent Faiyaz’s label, ISO Supremacy/PULSE Records. The album features songs that began during a challenging period in Richman’s life, later finalized in the desert in early 2024. Richman sees COYOTE as a thematic follow-up to his 2022 EP, ALLIGATOR, showcasing his artistry and range.

In addition to the album, Richman is set to embark on his first headlining tour. Due to high demand, he has added a live show in Chicago on September 15th after selling out previously announced shows in Washington D.C., New York, and Los Angeles. Earlier this month, Richman made his late-night TV debut with a performance of “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Tommy Richman has officially announced his highly anticipated debut  album, COYOTE,  is slated for release September 27th via ISO Supremacy/PULSE Records.

The announcement of the new album release date is accompanied by his latest COYOTE visual trailer, adding to what is already shaping up to be a monumental year for Tommy. This follows the success of his singles “DEVIL IS A LIE” and “MILLION DOLLAR BABY,” both of which charted on Billboard’s Hot 100, with “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” now holding the #1 spot on Mediabase’s Top 40 and Billboard’s Pop Airplay Chart. After debuting at number 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” hit number 1 on Billboard’s Global 200 chart and Tik Tok Billboard Top 50, recently surpassed 1 Billion global streams and broke a new record as the longest running #1 song on the Tik Tok Billboard Top 50 after holding the spot for 10 weeks in a row.

Celebrated by various music outlets and critics as the song of the summer since it’s release, including #1 on TikTok’s “Songs Of The Summer” list after being the most used song on the platform, the song has also peaked as the #1 Overall Streaming Track (all genres) and the #1 Audio Global Streaming Track (all genres), and was included in former President Barack Obama’s 2024 Summer Playlist.  Last month, Tommy was also announced as one of the first three independent artists to join this year’s YouTube Foundry Program cohort.

COYOTE comes as Tommy Richman’s debut album following the record-breaking star being signed to fellow DMV-native Brent Faiyaz’s label, ISO Supremacy/PULSE Records. The LP contains songs that began years ago when Tommy was broke and lonely but confident in his art. In early 2024, he finalized these sketches and ideas in the desert. The rugged terrain and big skies inspired Tommy, who sees COYOTE as a thematic follow-up to his 2022 E.P., ALLIGATOR. “I’ve been building up my discography for years. I’m not a one-hit-wonder,” Tommy says —having already proven it so. COYOTE is about artistry and range. After years on the grind, the new album will close out a dominating 2024 and arrives with his first headlining tour.

Barack Obama’s (Brat) Summer Playlist Includes Fan Favorites From Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, And Shaboozey

Former President Obama has shared his latest summer playlist, and of course, he’s all-in on Brat Summer too. This year’s list includes new fan favorites from the likes of Billie Eilish, Shaboozey, and of course, Charli XCX, but it also has quite a few throwbacks, as well. “No Diggity” from Blackstreet makes an appearance, as does “Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting” from jazz great Charles Mingus and “How Do U Want It” from the late, great Tupac Shakur.

But, a big part of Obama’s appeal has been that he’s an older guy who keeps up with the times, and as per usual, he certainly does seem to have his ear to the streets — or at least, the algorithms. From Billie Eilish’s new album, Hit Me Hard And Soft, he’s got “Chihiro”; from Charli XCX’s unlikely political favorite, “365.” Shaboozey’s J-Kwon-sampling “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is a no-brainer, as is Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby.”

However, there are also some surprises here. Rising British rapper Enny appears with her 2023 single “Charge It,” as does Saweetie’s newest single, “My Best.” R&B stars H.E.R. and Cleo Sol both appear (both songs are throwbacks from their catalogs, with “Process” and “Why Don’t You” representing their respective artists). But lest you think that golden ear is turning to tin, Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” also appears to keep things up to date.

You can see Mr. Obama’s full summer playlist below.
