Diddy, The Weeknd, French Montana, And 21 Savage Prove They’re In Their Own League On ‘Another One Of Me’

Tonight (September 15), Diddy dropped his much-anticipated R&B album, The Love Album: Off The Grid. On the new album is “Another One Of Me,” a scorching collaboration with 21 Savage, French Montana, and The Weeknd.

This song is particularly special, as Diddy previously teased the song as the last collaboration of The Weeknd’s music career. On the chorus, The Weeknd gives us an empowering, confident farewell.

“Another one of me won’t come around again,” he sings on the song’s chorus, marking the beginning of the end of Abel Tesfaye’s run as The Weeknd.

Elsewhere on the song, the three rappers each deliver verses in which they thrive in their affluence and timelessness, and while The Weeknd may slowly be stepping away from the spotlight, French, 21, and Diddy aren’t letting their reign let up just yet.

The song was first previewed in a Beats commercial last year, sparking much anticipation for the collab.

In the accompanying music video, the four heavy hitters are seen in a digital kingdom, holding the wreckage together as the spit rhymes and deliver vocal bars.

Diddy Teases The Weeknd’s Last Feature With Exciting New Trailer

Diddy is one lucky man. You might be asking yourself, “Why?” To give you some context, the hip-hop icon that needs no introduction is dropping his brand new project, The Love Album: Off The Grid, on September 15. While that alone is exciting news for hip-hop heads across the world, there is another bit of information that has a lot of fans buzzing. Back in early August, The Weeknd announced at one of his shows during his Til Dawn After Hours tour that he is not going to be doing any more features.

The one caveat that might bring him back to doing one would be if Daft Punk reunites. That pairing split up on February 22, 2021. But, Abel has agreed to make one more stop before closing this chapter in his legendary career. Diddy’s album is gaining hype because it is him, but also because the Canadian singer is laying down his last guest vocals on it. “Another One Of Me” is the lead single to his eighth studio album that will have a whole host of features on it, but probably none bigger than The Weeknd.

With the LP just days away from being out on streaming, Diddy has just teased this collab once again. He previously shared a clip on Twitter of some of Abel’s vocals, which sounded incredible. Here, though, he shares a sneak peek at the music video for the song. Theneighborhoodtalk shared it to their Instagram and the trailer looks amazing. Cool visuals of 21 Savage, French Montana, and The Weeknd show them shape-shifting from VFX. Then, Diddy looks to be sampling Phil Collins’ iconic track, “In The Air Tonight,” for this song. It is shaping up to be a grand finale for The Weeknd’s last guest verse.

What are your initial thoughts on this brand-new trailer for Diddy’s lead single “Another One Of Me” with The Weeknd, French Montana, and 21 Savage? Do you think this song will be a banger? Features

As you can see above, the features are plentiful. There is only one song without a featured artist, which would be notable for any album but especially for a project of this length.

Diddy has teased some featured artists more than others. On August 30, Diddy confirmed that “Another One Of Me” will be The Weeknd’s final collaboration of his career. For weeks, Diddy has teased clips of Justin Bieber in the studio, promising that “R&Bieber is back” and explaining why “Moments” is a full-circle moment for them.

See Diddy’s similarly sentimental posts about Mary J. Blige, Teyana Taylor, The Dream, and others below.

Artwork

Diddy has not explicitly confirmed the album’s cover art. He’s posted loads of red-themed imagery, but one image of a diminutive Diddy in a red grid is the presumed cover.

Singles

Diddy has not released any singles, as of the time of this writing. Instead, he has gone all-in on teasing tracks with the behind-the-scenes videos, as we’ve already covered above.

Tour

A tour in support of The Love Album: Off The Grid has not yet been announced, as of the time of this writing. However, the 2023 VMAs on Tuesday (September 12) could serve as an ideal platform to reveal a single, tour plans, or both.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Drake & The Weeknd’s AI Song No Longer Grammy Eligible

Drake has long made it known that he’s not exactly a fan of the Grammy Awards. He didn’t speak out on social media after the organization’s latest decision. Still, we wouldn’t be surprised if the 36-year-old had an averse reaction to finding out that an AI-generated song by him and fellow Canadian The Weeknd was deemed eligible to be nominated at the annual event. Many music lovers made it clear that they weren’t on board with this update. Late on Thursday (September 7), Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. shared a video providing some clarity to the community.

“Let me be extra clear. Even though it was written by a human creator, the vocals were not legally obtained. The vocals were not cleared by the label or the artist, and the song is not commercially available,” his message noted. “And because of that, it’s not eligible,” the industry executive added afterward. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the times we live in, Mason Jr. did state that things could shift in the future regarding AI-eligibility.

Drake and The Weeknd’s AI-Generated “Heart On My Sleeve” Won’t Bring Home Any Grammys

“I take this stuff very seriously. It’s all complicated and it’s moving really quickly. I’m sure things are going to continue to have to evolve and change. But please, do not be confused. The Academy is here to support and advocate and protect and represent human artists and human creators. Period,” the CEO assured his followers, who have been reacting positively to the news so far.

Now that we finally have a release date for Drake’s For All The Dogs album, the father of one has begun hinting at who we’ll hear featured on the project. A reunion with Nicki Minaj has already been officially confirmed, and according to his latest Instagram post, we may hear from Central Cee too. Read more about that at the link below, and check back later for more hip-hop/pop culture news updates.

The Grammys’ CEO Offered Clarity After His Comment On The Viral AI Drake Song’s Award Eligibility Was Seemingly Misunderstood

For weeks, the music was divided after a way of AI-generated songs began circling online. Rappers such as Kendrick Lamar and Lil Wayne verbalized that they weren’t in the least bit worried. However, things quickly took a turn when The Recording Academy, the organizers behind the Grammys, announced that these works would be eligible for awards during the 2024 season. At the center of these landmark decision is a viral AI track using Drake and The Weeknd’s programmed vocals.

Although the song “Heart On My Sleeve” has been removed from streaming platforms, rumors began circulating that it had been submitted for a highly sought-after Gramophone trophy consideration. Grammy’s CEO Harvey Mason, Jr., fanned the flames by telling The New York Times on September 4 that it did meet the eligibility requirements. But today (September 8), Mason took a moment to clarify his original statement.

“I’m sorry, but I have to clear up some of this bad and really inaccurate information that’s starting to float around. This version of “Heart on My Sleeve” uses AI voice modeling that sounds like Drake and The Weeknd, it’s not eligible for Grammy consideration. Let me be extra, extra clear, even though it was written by a human creator, the vocals were not legally obtained, the vocals were not cleared by the label or the artists, and the song is not commercially available, and because of that, it’s not eligible,” Mason remarked to The Hollywood Reporter.

He continued, “I take this [AI] stuff very seriously. It’s all complicated, and it’s moving really, really quickly. I’m sure things are going to continue to have to evolve and change. But please, please, do not be confused. The Academy is here to support and advocate and protect and represent human artists, and human creators, period.”

Musicians such as Meek Mill and Grimes have responded relatively positively to the track. Drake, on the other hand, hasn’t been as approving. In April, when a fan recreated Ice Spice’s song “Munch” using Drake’s voice (via AI software), he immediately declared his disdain for it. The next Grammy Award ceremony isn’t set to take place until next year, so there’s no telling what the future has in store.

Drake & The Weeknd’s AI-Generated Song ‘Heart On My Sleeve’ Scores Grammy Nomination

Drake x The Weeknd

Drake and The Weeknd’s unexpected AI-generated song, “Heart On My Sleeve,” was recently submitted for a Grammy nomination. The Viral Drake And The Weeknd AI Song Was Submitted To The Grammys And It’s ‘Absolutely Eligible,’ The Recording Academy Explained

Back in April, Universal Music Group issued a takedown notice after an AI-generated song imitating Drake and The Weeknd went viral on YouTube, but that somehow isn’t stopping the song from being considered for a Grammy Award. The song’s creator, an anonymous internet denizen going by “Ghostwriter,” has submitted the song to the Recording Academy, and it sounds like it’ll be taken seriously despite its dubious provenance.

The song, “Heart On My Sleeve,” used approximations of the two performers to sing a mopey breakup ballad supposedly about Selena Gomez (who was previously romantically involved with The Weeknd). It also generated plenty of criticism online from detractors who believed that its popularity undermined the creativity and individuality of the artists invoked. As one Twitter user put it, “The first immediate thing that stands out is that so much of this AI music is going after rap/hip hop and that’s how you can tell the people behind it have contempt for it.”

Apparently, that contempt extends to the Recording Academy (because of course it does). The Academy CEO, Harvey Mason, Jr., told The New York Times, “As far as the creative side, it’s absolutely eligible because it was written by a human.” I’m not so sure that’s the case (one generative AI “writes” Drake songs based on prompts provided by users after scraping existing Drake songs for cues), but Drake himself generally seems to frown on the illegal use of his likeness (or, in this case, his voice) for AI-generated songs, so that would be enough for me to disqualify this thing from contention — but I’m not an Academy member (yet) so, what do I know?

The Academy announced that AI-generated songs would be eligible in June, provided the songs were actually written by people, but despite later clarifications, it’s unclear how exactly the Academy intends to verify authorship.

Is The Weeknd Retiring?

The Weeknd confused a lot of fans when he said he no longer goes by that name. Instead, he wants to use his real first name, Abel. It was especially jarring after his focus on television with the HBO series The Idol.

However, it doesn’t mean he’s retiring from music. In his interview with W Magazine in May, he explained it’s just time for something new.

“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” he said. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”

Luckily for listeners of his music, the second season of The Idol was canceled by HBO. “The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” a spokesperson for the network shared. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

When Is The Weeknd Changing His Name?

The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) told W Magazine in May, “I’m going through a cathartic path right now. It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”

Shortly thereafter, he updated his display name across his social media accounts to “Abel Tesfaye,” but he’s kept @theweeknd as his handle. So, technically, the name-change has sort of already taken place.

But Tesfaye will have to keep The Weeknd alive at least until December, as The Weeknd’s ongoing (and seemingly never-ending) After Hours Til Dawn Tour still has to weave through Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Australia, and New Zealand. The grand finale, per his official website, will be on December 8 at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.

Still, there are signs that The Weeknd is starting to fade to black. On August 9 in Poland, he performed an unreleased song called “Another One Of Me” and billed it as “the last feature I ever do, ever in my career.” On Wednesday, August 30, Diddy confirmed that “Another One Of Me” will appear on his forthcoming The Love Album: Off The Grid and also stated it is “The Weeknd’s last collab of his career.”

Yet again, however, Tesfaye stopped short of totally killing The Weeknd because, when posting his performance to X (formerly known as Twitter, speaking of name-changes), he wrote, “the final feature… unless Daft Punk ever get back together.”

When will Tesfaye permanently retire The Weeknd in favor of his birth name? Will he do that at all? In short, we do not know because it seems he does not totally know. What we do know is that his The Idol character, Tedros, has been killed, so to speak, as HBO canceled the series earlier this week after one very controversial season.

Diddy Teased ‘Another One Of Me’ As The Weeknd’s ‘Last Collab Of His Career,’ And Jerry Rice Is Pumped

On August 9, The Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) performed “Another One Of Me,” an unreleased song, in Warsaw, Poland, which he billed as “the last feature I ever do ever in my career.” On Wednesday, August 30, Diddy provided more context.

“IT’S OFFICIAL @THEWEEKND’S LAST COLLAB OF HIS CAREER WILL BE ON… THE LOVE ALBUM: OFF THE GRID!” Diddy captioned a teaser posted to Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter). “‘ANOTHER ONE OF ME’ SEPTEMBER 15TH. WELCOME TO THE LOVE ERA [red heart emoji].”

The all-red video finds Diddy coolin’ on a loveseat and is soundtracked by Tesfaye’s soaring falsetto: “Another one of me won’t come around again.”

Diddy’s Instagram comments section was quickly populated by the likes of Yung Miami (“Waves on swimmmmmmmmnn”) and Ty Dolla Sign (five flame emojis). Even NFL Hall Of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice couldn’t contain his excitement, writing, “Let’s GOAT [football emoji, goat emoji, flex emoji].”

Last week, Diddy announced The Love Album: Off The Grid will arrive on September 15 alongside a trailer featuring Tesfaye, Justin Bieber, and Mary J. Blige.

With “Another One Of Me” coming soon, Tesfaye’s fans have something to look forward to after the cancellation of The Idol, his controversial HBO series. The Idol aired five episodes earlier this summer. News of its cancellation broke on August 28.
