Something About Jay-Z’s ‘The Book Of HOV’ Auction Sure Makes It Look Like He’s Planning A New Album

Jay-Z has sparked speculation over whether the rapper might have a new album on the way. The theories started through his The Book Of HOV exhibit auction in the Brooklyn Public Library, according to People Magazine. He had a depiction for each of his 13 albums, but there was an empty spot for a 14th one — which could very well get filled soon.

In the photo of the raffle item, it was a signed leather case that had each of the albums printed as commemorative library cards. Yet, there is a clear gap after his 4:44 album, raising questions about why that was left empty. (13 is also an odd number, so maybe they just wanted even rows.)

However, Jay-Z has also discussed that he would need to return on his terms, according to an interview he did with Gayle King.

“I’ll say I wanna make music, but it has to be something important,” Jay-Z told King when asked about new music. “I don’t wanna just make a bunch of tunes. That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all. I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something, you know? It has to mean something to a larger society.”

Jay-Z Sparks New Album Theories Thanks To “Book Of HOV” Auction

Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers to ever live. Overall, his resume is cemented and he will go down as the GOAT to a lot of people. That said, fans have been very excited about his next project. He has 13 albums to his name and fans have wanted that 14th project for a while. Unfortunately, the album has yet to drop, and Jay has yet to even announce it. However, his latest auction for the “Book Of HOV” exhibit is now leading to some speculation that the album is on the horizon.

According to People, there is a case for each album in the exhibit. That said, there is a 14th case which is empty. One could deduce in their head that this is some sort of teaser that a 14th album is, in fact, on the horizon. Of course, that has not been confirmed and is simply wishful thinking. While speaking with Gayle King earlier this year, Hov noted that there are a few conditions that must be met in order for him to release music.

“I already [used the word ‘retirement’], I can’t do that ever again,” Jay explained. “I’ll say I wanna make music, but it has to be something important. I don’t wanna just make a bunch of tunes. That’s not gonna serve me. It won’t feed me, first of all. I have to be saying something important. It has to mean something, you know? It has to mean something to a larger society.”

“Even Oprah said, ‘You’re making a damn fool of yourself! Stop asking him. He doesn’t want to do it.’,” King recalled. “But I couldn’t let it go because he never said, ‘No, no, no.’ He just kept delaying, delaying, delaying. Oprah said, ‘He’s being polite because he doesn’t want to tell you, ‘No.’ I kept coming back. I don’t know why he said yes or why he changed his mind but I’m forever grateful.”

N.O.R.E. Admits He Would’ve Prefered JAY-Z Spoke With Someone Else Instead Of Gayle King

JAY-Z Explains Origin Of “Diamond” Hand Signal

JAY-Z recalled the origin of his iconic diamond hand sign during a recent interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings. Speaking with King while touring his Book Of HOV exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library, he explained that it has to do with his albums being certified diamond. JAY has flashed the hand sign countless times over the course of his career, including on the cover of his 2000 album The Dynasty: Roc La Familia.

“When we first started, we had a group called Christion,” JAY-Z explained. “When you sell 10 million, you go diamond, right? We believed in them so heavy, we was like, this group is going to sell 10 million records. So, we started putting the diamond up for Christion. That’s how it all came about. And then we started playing with it, and then we started doing it at shows. Then the whole crowd started doing it, and it stuck.”

Elsewhere in the interview, JAY discussed his iconic performance at Glastonbury in 2008, when the event was still a rock festival. Chirs Martin from Coldplay convinced him to go through with the set. “At one point, I was like, ‘Why am I going there?’” JAY-Z recalled. “If they don’t want me there, I don’t want to go. And Chris from Coldplay was instrumental on [convincing me to play]. He was like, ‘Jay, they love you. It’s just the old guard, they don’t know. It’s always been a rock festival.’ They didn’t have anything against me personally. It was just like, this is a rock festival, this is what it is. The world was changing.” Check out JAY’s interview with King below.

JAY-Z Recalls How “One-Take Hov” Nickname Started

JAY-Z recalled the origin of his “one-take Hov” nickname while speaking with Gayle King at his Book of HOV exhibit in Brooklyn for CBS Mornings. The legendary rapper’s Brooklyn Library exhibit covers the entirety of his career in both music, but also his deals in sports, music, alcohol, film, and public service.

“This was when you were recording to actual tape. So, you can’t mess up, ‘cause then you got to go all the way back and cut the tape,” Jay explained to King as they walked past a display of his master tapes. “That’s where the whole ‘One-Take HOV’ came from. Because if you wanted a fly chorus on this thing, you had to go to dinner. It took an engineer hours to cut the tape… fly it over here… So I start learning my lyrics really good so I could do them one time—you understand—straight down, and I didn’t waste time.”

Elsewhere in the interview, JAY-Z discussed the long-standing hypothetical debate as to whether a dinner with him or $500,000 is more valuable. He suggested fans should take the money in the scenario. “You gotta take the money,” JAY-Z said. “You got all that in the music for $10.99 — that’s a bad deal. I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal. Take the $500,000, go buy some albums, and listen to the albums. It’s all there. If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words, for what it is, it’s all there. Everything I said was going to happen happened, everything I said I wanted to do I’ve done. There’s the blueprint — literally, the blueprint to me and my life and my journey is there already.”

Jay-Z Adds “Dead Presidents” GS 300 Lexus To Book Of Hov Exhibit

Screen Shot 2023 09 15 at 11.44.24 AM

Hip Hop billionaire Jay-Z made American history with the installation of his ‘Book Of Hov’ installation in the Brooklyn Public Library in the borough’s Grand Army Plaza, which will be on display until the end of 2023. Now, it has been revealed that Hov has added his GS300 Lexus to the exhibit.

The Lexus, which was a mean set of wheels for the average Brooklyn hustler in the 90s, was seen in Jay-Z’s “Dead Presidents” video as well as the Streets Is Watching movie.

“The new installation adds another element of JAY-Z’s career to the exhibit that visitors can enjoy,” says Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez.

‘The Book Of HOV’ Exhibit Honoring Jay-Z Has Added The Car Of His Adolescent Dreams

In 1993, a brand-new Lexus GS 300 was the height of luxury — at least, it was in the mind of Jay-Z, who was still about three years away from his big break. It figured so prominently into his dreams of wealth that he rapped about it multiple times early in his career — notably on songs like “Can I Live” and “Dead Presidents II,” and later nostalgically on “Empire State Of Mind.”

Now, that car has been added to the Brooklyn Public Library’s The Book of HOV exhibit, bringing his early fascination with the vehicle somewhat full circle (I mean, it’s a thirty-year-old luxury car from when “luxury” meant “it has power windows.” You never thought Toyota would take it this far).

The exhibit has been such a resounding success that its run has been extended per Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, who said, “The response to The Book Of HOV has been overwhelming, so we’re excited to extend the exhibit to December to ensure new and returning attendees can have enough opportunities to fully immerse themselves into the experience.”

According to Lexus Advertising & Media Senior Manager Mia Phillips, “The vehicle display is recognition of the mutual respect and admiration between Lexus and Jay-Z, whose brilliance and contributions to culture extend far beyond hip-hop.”

In other news, Jay’s hitting Atlantic City for a 007-themed blackjack tournament later this month, and is producing a new Netflix movie, The Book Of Clarence for 2024.

JAY-Z Becomes First Black Male Artist to Have 10 Albums Go Double-Platinum

JAY-Z Becomes First Black Male Artist to Have 10 Albums Go Double-Platinum

JAY-Z is continuing to run up the score as far as career accolades. According to VIBE, JAY-Z has become the first ever Black male artist to have at least ten solo studio albums to hit double-platinum status.

The achievement comes after RIAA certified Hov’s Blueprint 3 with two million equivalent album sales. Additional certifications include The Black album hitting quadruple platinum. Overall in his career, HOV is measured to have $33.5 million in total sales and counting.

The first Black person to achieve the status was Mariah Carey, who has had eleven double-platinum albums.

Additional moves of Hov are highlighted at “The Book Of HOV,” an immersive exhibit at Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch, dedicated to the iconic career and cultural contributions of Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter. Open to the public from July 14; the exhibit celebrates Carter’s global impact as a musician, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and disruptor. The surprise exhibit is a tribute to Carter’s hometown of Brooklyn and the broader hip-hop community.

To coincide with the exhibit, Brooklyn Public Library and Roc Nation have collaborated to create 13 limited-edition library cards featuring artwork from JAY-Z’s iconic albums. Visitors can collect these exclusive cards starting July 14th and at library branches across Brooklyn from August 7th.

The immersive experience showcases artifacts, awards, rare photos, magazine covers, and more, spanning Carter’s 27-year career since his debut album, Reasonable Doubt. The exhibit features a replica of Baseline Studios, where Carter recorded his classic albums, and Dan Tobin Smith’s art installation from the cover of “The Blueprint 3.”

Beyond music, the exhibit highlights Carter’s business endeavors, philanthropy, and social justice advocacy, including his role as a co-owner of the Brooklyn Nets and his success with brands like TIDAL, Armand de Brignac Champagne, and D’USSE Cognac.

Christie’s will also offer a complete set of limited-edition library cards, hand-signed by JAY-Z, in a custom leather case, with proceeds benefiting the Brooklyn Public Library. Additionally, Roc Nation will contribute to the library’s vinyl collection and provide books and a monetary donation. The exhibit aims to attract visitors and support the library’s mission to provide knowledge, literacy, and programming to the community.
