Playboi Carti Premieres New Music & Brings Out Opium During His Summer Smash Set

Playboi Carti was one of the headliners for Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash Festival this weekend, particularly on Saturday (June 15), and it was even more wild and chaotic than you’d expect in the best way. The crowd was absolutely electric, he went through his recent non-streaming singles for the first time in a live performance setting (excluding VULTURES listening parties), and he even brought out the rest of his Opium crew, including Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely. The Atlanta rapper had some leaks emerge recently, particularly one with Travis Scott, but more importantly, he took matters into his own hands. Reportedly, he debuted two unreleased tracks during this set.

Furthermore, a clip of one of these tracks (reportedly titled “ALL RED”) features DJ Swamp Izzo, who claimed over the weekend that Playboi Carti would drop something on Saturday. While that didn’t end up manifesting officially, at least this performance refueled a lot of hype and hope concerning his next album. As far as the sound of it, it’s a bit more bombastic and bouncy than the other singles… or at least, from what we can tell in the distorted and choppy clip below. We’ll take anything we can get at this point, and we’re sure there are cleaner leaks online.

Playboi Carti’s New Song Preview

However, this excitement around Playboi Carti’s new era hasn’t taken away any interest or mystique behind what we’ve already received from him. For example, fans comically reacted to audio of his raw ad-libs, something that contextualizes his tracks in a pretty interesting manner. Some folks might not consider what goes into a recording process, especially for something so volatile and energetic. Even though it just sounds funny at face value, it’s always compelling to see how a track came together and how they masked that process with magic.

Opium Joins Summer Smash

Of course, take all this with a massive, long-standing, and exceedingly frustrating grain of salt. Playboi Carti’s made promises before that never came to fruition, and it’s clear that there are a lot of factors in the album’s release that might not have much to do with the artist himself. But whenever he does have something big in the public eye, he always shows out and usually offers at least something new for fans to chew on. So we’ll sit patiently until a drop lets us loose in the pits.

Ski Mask Brings Out Nardwuar At 2023 Summer Smash

Ski Mask the Slump God blew the roof off the SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, IL, last Saturday. The 27-year-old rapper kicked off the second day of the rap festival with something special. During his performance, he brought on Nardwuar the Human Serviette, absolutely hyping up the crowd. Born John Ruskin, Nardwuar is a Canadian celebrity journalist and musician who is the lead singer and keyboardist for the Evaporators. His absurd, eccentric, yet well-researched interviews of rap and hip-hop stars are infamous.

While it appears Ski Mask did this for the memes, it’s still a great tribute to someone who can get rappers so riled up. Pharrell and Drake are on record saying their interviews with Nardwuar are the best they’ve ever had. However, other performers like Dave Rountree of Blur, Alice Cooper, Travis Barker, Beck, and Nas have either hung up on him or verbally or physically attacked Nardwuar. A polarizing figure in the rap game for sure, the journalist must’ve felt pretty good gracing the stage at one of rap’s most influential concerts of the year.

Ski Mask’s 2023 Summer Smash Contribution

The Summer Smash 2023 featured an impressive lineup all weekend long, including Vince Staples, Ice Spice, Glorilla, Juicy J, Trippie Redd, and Rico Nasty. Headliners were Kid Cudi on Friday, Future on Saturday, and Playboi Carti on Sunday. Plus, special guest stars were $uicideboy$, Lil Uzi Vert, and Lil Durk. To put it bluntly, this was a massive show that didn’t disappoint. And when Ski Mask the Slump God pulled his Nardwuar stunt, the audience ate it up.

Nardwuar also angers Canadian politicians on the regular and is on the record stating he will interview any celebrity. Funny enough, musicians have immortalized his zany demeanor in tribute lyrics. At the 2013 SXSW Festival, Pharrell turned the tables on him and interviewed him the same way he’d interview others. Lil Uzi Vert sampled some of his 2018 Nardwuar interview for the song “Futsal Suffle 2020.” Most recently, Maclemore’s 2022 song “Maniac” features a cameo from the Canadian journalist, complete with references. For Ski Mask, his embracement of Nardwuar’s kooky aura should only help his own rising fame.

Playboi Carti Chased By Fans After Summer Smash Set

Playboi Carti is one of the biggest artists in the entire world at this point. Overall, he is someone who is absolutely adored by his fans. Although his music may not be for everyone, there is certainly a massive contingent who love everything he does. Not to mention, Whole Lotta Red is considered to be a classic by many. Its fusion of rap and punk is extremely unique. So much so that Carti even has a guitarist at all of his performances, and it completely enhances the sound of the music.

Yesterday, during the BET Awards, Playboi Carti was in Illinois instead, where he got to be part of Summer Smash 2023. This is the biggest hip-hop festival in the Mid-West. Lil Uzi Vert had performed there this weekend as well, and Carti got to cap off the entire weekend. Overall, Carti’s performance was truly incredible. He played some of his biggest hits, and the fans were feeling every single second of the set. As it turns out, the fans were looking to turn up well after the show, as showcased by the clip below.

Playboi Carti Fans Are Different

According to Our Generation Music, the video above showcases Carti fans taking to the streets so that they could chase him down after the show. Playboi Carti was clearly aware of the fans as he got up on his seat in the car and allowed himself to tower through the sunroof of the vehicle. Of course, Carti is around 6’3″ so it is easy for him to pull off something like this. Either way, this just goes to show how much of a legend Carti is and how fans love seeing him wherever they can.

As for some new music, it may be a while before Carti delivers a new project. Although he is constantly teasing something new, we have yet to actually get anything. In December, it will be three years since Whole Lotta Red dropped. Needless to say, fans are looking forward to getting something new. Stay tuned to HNHH for more news from around the music world.

Summer Smash 2022 Music Lineup

Summer Smash Festival has announced the full music lineup for this year’s three-day music festival, which will take place in Chicago, Illinois, from Friday, June 17 to Sunday, June 19. Headliners for this year’s edition include Post Malone, Young Thug, Gunna, and Playboi Carti.

Summer Smash Festival, founded by two Chicago-based music powerhouses – concert promoter SPKRBX and next-gen media business Lyrical Lemonade – has evolved into one of the country’s largest independent music events, with 90,000 attendance last summer. Summer Smash will shortly return to its regular dates in mid-June, bringing the festival’s most stacked lineup to date, packed to the brim with today’s biggest hip-hop names.

The festivities will begin on Friday with a headlining performance by Grammy Award-winning rap pioneer Young Thug, who will be joined by fellow YSL Records labelmate Gunna for the Atlanta-based rap duo’s first-ever full-set collaborative performance; and will conclude on Saturday night with a performance by singer/songwriter Post Malone, who is one of the highest-selling music artists of the past quarter-century and is preparing to release his next album later this year. Following his recent “Album of the Year” nomination at the 2022 Grammy Awards in recognition of his efforts to Kanye West’s critically praised project Donda, enigmatic emcee Playboi Carti will help finish out the three-day festival on Sunday night.

Additional weekend performances include cloud rap, southern hip-hop, trap, drill, West Coast, and more, with first-time Summer Smash appearances from Wiz Khalifa, Polo G, Rico Nasty, Oliver Tree, 2 Chainz, and Ohgeesy, as well as the Chicago debut of emerging rap artist Yeat. Other notable artists include Trippie Redd, Ski Mask The Slump God, Lil Tecca, and $not, among many others, who are helping to complete the 2022 schedule.

“Today marks an exciting milestone for Summer Smash as we unveil our biggest music lineup to date. It’s been incredible to witness our fest grow into one of the largest annual music events in the country in only four short years”, said Summer Smash Festival Director and SPKRBX Founder Berto Solorio. “Our team is always striving to improve and elevate the festival experience, so we can’t wait to show our fans what we have in store this summer including bigger music acts performing on bigger stages, plus more food trucks, improved amenities, and more art installations than ever before. We’ve leveled up the entire experience.”

Tickets for the three-day GA and VIP events will go on sale this Friday, April 8, at 10:00 a.m. CST at www.TheSummerSmash.com.
