J Cole Removes His Kendrick Lamar Diss Track “7 Minute Drill From Streaming Services

Over the weekend, J. Cole dropped a surprise new mixtape called Might Delete Later. The project is already proving to live up to its name quicker than fans could have possibly imagined. The tape itself was met with a pretty big shrug from fans and critics as many are still anticipating the next fully realized new album from Cole. Most of the discussion surrounding the record focused on the song “7 Minute Drill” where Cole responded to comments Kendrick Lamar made about him and Drake on the Future & Metro Boomin song “Like That.”

The song was roundly rejected by hip-hop fans for its weak disses and it didn’t take long for Cole to try and backtrack. Just a few days after the album dropped he took the opportunity during his Dreamville festival to apologize for the diss track. Now he’s gone another step further and removed it from the mixtape on streaming services. The closing track to the record is now greyed out on Spotify and unavailable on Apple Music. It had been the most-streamed song on the album on both platforms up to this point. Check out the fan reactions to Cole removing the song below.

J Cole Takes Down “7 Minute Drill” Just A Week After Dropping It

Future & Metro Boomin just released their second collaborative album of the year, the fittingly titled WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU. Given that Kendrick dissed Cole on their first project, it was a pretty big surprise to hear Cole deliver a feature on the second. He appears on the song “Red Leather. On the track he sings some lyrics that had fans thinking he was addressing the Kendrick situation.

Despite the seemingly relevant lyrics it’s unclear specifically when the song was recorded and if it was before or after the situation. What do you think of J. Cole removing “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services? Do you think moving on from the diss as fast as possible was the right move? Let us know in the comment section below.

Snoop Dogg Welcomes The Return Of Death Row Catalog To DSPs

Snoop Dogg’s acquisition of Death Row Records has been filled with highs and lows since the beginning of 2022. Before he hit the stage for the Super Bowl, he announced that he became the new owner of the label. Part of his decision was to modernize the label and brand for the digital era. You’d assume that meant that would make it more easily accessible. However, he began to plot out its debut in the Metaverse. Unfortunately, those plans have been stagnant for a while, though it’s still a possibility in the future.

After Snoop Dogg acquired Death Row, fans noticed that the albums released under the label went missing DSPs. This was no coincidence as Snoop later explained that he was unhappy with how streaming services paid out artists. “First thing I did was snatch all the music off those platforms traditionally known to people, because those platforms don’t pay,” he said on Drink Champs. “And those platforms get millions of millions of streams, and nobody gets paid other than the record labels.”

Snoop Dogg Confirms Death Row’s Return

The catalog of Death Row Records is officially back on streaming services this week. Snoop confirmed the news following an announcement that he partnered with ex-Apple Executive Larry Jackson’s new company gamma. The partnership comes as no surprise as gamma helped reintroduce the Death Row catalog to TikTok last month. However, their partnership with Snoop will undoubtedly expand beyond social media and streaming services as gamma describes itself as a “one-stop-shop media company that creates, distributes, and markets content, from music to podcasts to films, offering resources and guidance to artists who want to build their brands and expand beyond music,” per Billboard.

Now, fans can enjoy some of their favorite records from Death Row including Snoop’s Doggystyle (sans “Gz Up, Hoes Down” and other skits), Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Tupac’s All Eyez On Me, and more. Additionally, the partnership with gamma will also include two future releases from Snoop Dogg (presumably Missionary with Dr. Dre and another project). Thankfully, Snoop delivered the series of iconic projects and soundtracks that will undoubtedly be perfect for 4/20 next month.

De La Soul Re-Release “Eye Know”

The contentious battle surrounding De La Soul’s catalog became a public affair in recent years. The group, unfortunately, found themselves duking it out with Tommy Boy Records to have their projects released on DSPs. It came at the cost of signing what they described as an exploitative contract, leading to public outcry.

Things are finally working out in favor of the trio. This week, they finally shared their 1989 single, “Eye Know” to streaming services, a month after “The Magic Number” became accessible on DSPs. The fan-favorite record served as a highlight of their iconic album, 3 Feet High And Rising. According to Genius, the song contains several notable samples including, Steely Dan’s “Peg,” The Mad Lads’ “Make This Young Lady Mine,”  Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” and  “Sing a Simple Song” by Sly & the Family Stone. Finally, fans can add “Eye Know” to their Spotify and Apple Music playlists for the first time ever.

De La Soul’s entire catalog will make its way to streaming services later this year. The trio’s releases between 1989 and 2001 have been absent from DSPs but after Reservoir obtained the rights to Tommy Boy, each project will finally hit streamers. Expect to see 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul Is Dead, Buhloone Mindstate, Stakes Is High, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, and AOI: Bionix wherever you stream music on March 3rd. “It’s been 20 plus years overdue, but finally, we are here,” Maseo said in a statement.

The group hasn’t necessarily been active in recent years. They released their last studio album, Anonymous Nobody… in 2016, marking their first project in 12 years. Prior to that, they dropped The Grind Date in 2004. It’s unclear if they have any intention to release new music in the near future, though Pharrell recently expressed interest in collaborating. Hopefully, that’s something we see sometime this year.

Check out “Eye Know” below and sound off in the comments with your thoughts on De La Soul’s albums coming to streaming services.

Quotable Lyrics
Life will begin at the cut of a rim
Take it as filled to the rim as in brim
Squeeze your stoop like Betty Boop
We’ll make Campbell’s Alphabet Soup
And spell Plug One’s within
