Biden Administration Proposes Deal To Get Brittney Griner Out Of Russian Prison

Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner might be coming back to the United States soon. The WNBA star was arrested in February after she was caught with vape cartridges with hash oil in her luggage at the Sheremetyevo International Airport. Since then, her story has been shared across the news and social media and many have pleaded for her release.

According to CNN , the Biden Administration has proposed a prisoner trade with Russia; trading Griner and American Paul Whelan, both Americans imprisoned in Russia, for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout who is currently imprisoned in the United States.

Members of the Biden Administration who are close to the situation said that Biden approved the proposal back in June, 4 months after Griner was arrested.

A senior Biden Administration official told CNN that “We communicated a substantial offer that we believe could be successful based on a history of conversations with the Russians. … It takes two to tango. We start all negotiations to bring home Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained with a bad actor on the other side. We start all of these with somebody who has taken a human being American and treated them as a bargaining chip. So in some ways, it’s not surprising, even if it’s disheartening, when those same actors don’t necessarily respond directly to our offers, don’t engage constructively in negotiations.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that he plans to discuss bringing home Griner and Whelan during a conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov this week. This would be his first conversation with Lavrov since the war in Ukraine began.

“My hope would be that in speaking to Foreign Minister Lavrov, I can advance the efforts to bring them home,” Blinken said. “There is in my mind utility in conveying clear, direct messages to the Russians on key priorities for us. And as I mentioned, these include securing the return home of Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan.”

Griner faces 10 years in a Russian prison after pleading guilty to the drug charges. Griner maintained that she was in a rush and did not mean to break the law.

“I’d like to plead guilty, your honor. But there was no intent… I didn’t want to break the law,” Griner said.

Airport Assault Case Against Ex-NFL Player Brendan Langley Dismissed

nfl 1

Two months ago, a video of former Denver Broncos cornerback Brendan Langley went viral after he punched an United Airlines employee.

Brendan, who signed with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League in February, was  arrested for striking the employee. Now, the case against Langley has been dismissed.

Langley’s attorney, Halim Dhanidina, told TMZ that authorities determined Langley “used force that was reasonably necessary” during the confrontation that was caught on video in May at Newark Liberty International Airport.

“We are grateful for the Court’s decision which puts an end to this ordeal that began nearly two months ago when Mr. Langley was assaulted then wrongfully arrested and charged for exercising his rights under the law,” said Dhanidina. It was previously reported that the fight supposedly started after Langley was seen using a wheelchair to haul his luggage through the airport instead of utilizing a luggage cart. Though Langley wasn’t punished legally, his football career maybe be in jeopardy. Langley’s CFL team,The Calgary Stampeders, suspended Langley indefinitely after criminal charges were filed. At the time, Stampeders President and General Manager John Hufnagel stated, “The Stampeders take matters such as these very seriously.”There’s no word yet if the Stampeders have any plans to reinstate Langley. The United employee, who left the altercation bloodied, was fired, according to TMZ.

Langley was a third-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2017 out of Lamar. He played only 16 games in two seasons and was transitioning from cornerback to receiver in 2019 when the team released him. He also spent time on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad.

Despite his many accolades this incident indeed left a smear on Langley’s legacy.

LeBron James Say Brittney Griner Should Question Whether She Wants To Come Home

LeBron James suggested WNBA star Brittney Griner should question if she ever wants to return back to the United States after being detained in Russia for over 120 days.

During a promo for his HBO show, The Shop, King James says “How can she feel like America has her back?”  He then added, “I would be feeling, ‘do I even want to go back to America?’”

The Phoenix Mercury center has been held in Moscow since February as she’s accused of having under a gram of cannabis oil in her luggage when she was arrested at the airport.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist faces charges that could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. Griner says she’s “terrified” she may be held in Russian custody “forever.” She revealed in a handwritten letter sent to the White House in which she pleaded for her freedom.

“As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified I might be here forever.”

Ginger, 31, continued, “I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other American Detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home. I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you.”

The Kremlin has been blamed for using Griner as a political pawn while the State Department has said the American basketball center was “wrongfully detained. The White House says the POTUS  is committed to bringing home all Americans who are imprisoned overseas.

James, 37, later went to social media to explain his comments on Griner.

“My comments on ‘The Shop’ regarding Brittney Griner wasn’t knocking our beautiful country,” he tweeted. “I was simply saying how she’s probably feeling emotionally along with so many other emotions, thoughts, etc inside that cage she’s been in for over 100+ days! Long story short #BringHerHome”

[WATCH] Twitter Clowns WNBA For Low Budget All-Star MVP Trophy

trophy

You know Black Twitter doesn’t miss a thing and now they are dragging the WNBA for its less than stellar WNBA All-Star Most Valuable Player trophy.

The WNBA was dragged on the social media platform for its low-budget MVP hardware in comparison to the trophy the NBA splurges on.

Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum, of Team Wilson, was presented with the pint-size MVP trophy during the 2022 AT&T WNBA All-Star game at the Wintrust Arena on July 10, 2022 in Chicago.

Kelsey led her team to a 134-112 victory over Team Stewart. She scored 30 points to match the All-Star scoring record set by Maya Moore in 2015.

One Twitter user wrote, “The WNBA could have gone to Amazon and bought a better looking trophy.”

Other Twitter users decided to chip in and buy Kelsey a fancier MVP trophy with her name on it.

Do you think the WNBA could have done better?

The Raiders are breaking barriers and issuing in a new future for an NFL front office.  Las Vegas announced on Thursday it’s hired Sandra Douglass Morgan to be its new team president.

Morgan becomes the first ever Black woman to hold that title for an NFL franchise. She joins the team after working as the chairwoman and executive director of the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Raiders owner Mark Davis said in a statement that Morgan’s “experience, integrity and passion for this community will be invaluable to our organization.”  He continued, “From the moment I met Sandra, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with. We are extremely lucky to have her at the helm.”

The former litigation attorney shared her thoughts in a statement, according to NFL.com.

“I have been the first in other positions that I’ve held, whether it be city attorney or the Gaming Control Board. I definitely never want to be the last, and I want to get to a point obviously where there is no more first.”

Morgan added, “But as I kind of mentioned in my comments, the impact that this has is not lost on me. I definitely would tip my hat to all of the prior women that were leaders and visionaries, and if I could be an inspiration or help or open doors for any other woman and girl out there, then that’s an incredible accomplishment for me.”
