Stephen Curry, 2022 NBA Champion and Finals MVP, host of the 2022 ESPYS Presented by Capital One. The four-time NBA champion will celebrate the past year in sports by celebrating the finest athletes and performances, commemorating unforgettable moments, and mingling with prominent celebrities from sports and entertainment. On Wednesday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on ABC, the ESPYS will be broadcast live from Los Angeles.

“I’ve had the pleasure of attending The ESPYS but never imagined I’d have the privilege of hosting this special event,” Curry said. “As someone who loves the intersection of sports and entertainment, I look forward to delivering an exciting show for the fans while we celebrate the athletes who created the top moments of the year.”

The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage will be given to Vitali Klitschko, a former heavyweight boxing champion and the mayor of Kyiv. The Pat Tillman Award for Service, sponsored by MassMutual, will go to author, athlete, and retired Army Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans. Dick Vitale, a broadcaster and hall of famer in college basketball, will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a nonprofit organization established by ESPN and the late basketball coach Jim Valvano during the inaugural ESPYS in 1993, receives support and funding from the ESPYS. Over 29 years, ESPN has aided in the donation of more than $165 million to the V Foundation. ESPN and Full Day Productions jointly produce the ESPYs.

Brittney Griner’s Detention Extended, Trial Set to Start on Friday

Brittney Griner’s trial is officially set to start on Friday. According to ESPN, Griner has been ordered to remain in custody for the entirety of her trial. Griner was arrested four months ago for alleged cannabis possession.

Griner is facing up to 10 years in prison if she is convicted on the charge of large-scale transportation of drugs. Less than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted, which can be overturned.

During her court appearance on Monday, Griner’s detention was extended for six months to Dec. 20. Videos and images from the courthouse showed the basketball star in handcuffs.

“It was good to see her in some of those images, but it’s tough. Every time’s a reminder that their teammate, their friend, is wrongfully imprisoned in another country,” Phoenix Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard said. “It’s tough on our team. It is good to see her. See how she’s doing? I don’t know if she’s doing OK.”

According to ESPN’s T.J. Quinn, Griner’s conviction was always likely, despite the evidence holding up or not, citing the proceedings are a formality to qualify her arrest. Russia is reportedly willing to negotiate her release.

“This may sound counterintuitive, but the trial is a crucial part of the process,” Dr. Danielle Gilbert, assistant professor of military and strategic studies at the United States Air Force Academy, told ESPN. “The Russians have to keep pretending that this is a legitimate arrest. There is no reason to believe that the charges are legitimate or that her trial will be fair. But if and when she’s convicted, the Russians will have made clear their credible alternative to a deal to bring her home.

“Hostage diplomacy cases rely on the pretense of law. With Brittney Griner — and Paul Whelan and Trevor Reed before her — the Russians are using our own respect for the rule of law against us.”

SOURCE SPORTS: Orlando Magic Selects Duke’s Paolo Banchero with No. 1 Pick

Leading up to the NBA Draft, it was believed the Orlando Magic would use the No. 1 pick to pick Jabari Smith Jr. from Auburn. Instead, they swerved the basketball world and selected Paolo Banchero of Duke.

The No. 2 pick, going to the Oklahoma City Thunder, was Gonzaga Center Chet Holmgren, and Smith Jr. would fall to the Houston Rockets at no. 3.

“I had a feeling, from the information I was being told, that it was just kind of up in the air,” Banchero said to ESPN. “Orlando wasn’t really sure yet, and just to be ready for whatever.

“I didn’t find out, though, that I was actually getting picked until about 20 seconds before the commissioner got on the stage. I didn’t even have time to really think about it or anything. It just kind of happened. I can’t believe it, but I’m ready. I’m ready.”

During his final season at Duke, Banchero averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. He now joins a young core that features Jalen Suggs, Cole Anthony, Franz Wagner, and Wendell Carter Jr. All players, except Carter Jr., were drafted by the Magic.

To round out the top five, The Sacramento Kings drafted Keegan Murray, and Detroit added Purdue guard Jaden Ivey to their young core.

There were plenty of Draft Night trades. The New York Knicks sent Kemba Walker to the Detroit Pistons, who are expected to buy the guard out. The Philadelphia 76ers traded Danny Green and the No. 23 pick to the Memphis Grizzlies for De’Anthony Melton.

Jake Paul Set To Fight Tommy Fury At MSG In August

YouTube star-turned-undefeated Pro Boxer Jake Paul (5-0-4 KO) will return to the ring on August 6 to take on the Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s younger brother, Tommy Fury (8-0-4 KO), in Madison Square Garden. Originally scheduled for last December, however, Fury was forced to withdraw due to injury, leaving Paul to fight a rematch bout against Tyron Woodley instead, and earned a knockout victory in the eighth round.

A rivalry between Paul and Fury erupted in early 2021 with the two boxers exchanging words across social media. The upcoming fight marks Jake Paul’s third fight in a six-fight deal with Showtime Boxing. Paul-Fury will be co-presented by Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.

“I wasn’t sure I was going to say yes to another potential matchup against Tommy after he pulled out of our matchup last year,” Paul said via press release on Thursday. “But ultimately, knocking out a Fury was too appealing to pass up.”

Tommy Fury will be the first “actual” boxer to face Jake Paul after accumulating a buzzing undefeated resume with two MMA fighters (Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren), a Basketball player (Nate Robinson), and a fellow YouTuber star (AnEsonGib). “The Paul brothers’ boxing charade is about to come to an end once and for all,” Fury said. “I am a boxer. My opponent plays boxing. Jake Paul has been dressed up to look like a boxer against retirees from other sports. On August 6, I will show the world that he does not belong in the ring.”

Now a promoter, Paul signed his first boxer, WBC and WBO featherweight champion Amanda Serrano, last December. Serrano will co-headling the August lineup with Paul as she will fight Argentina’s Brenda Carabajal.

An official press conference for the upcoming boxing match will be held this Wednesday. Paul vs. Fury will be available on Showtime Pay-Per-View. Tickets go on-sale Wednesday, July 29.

Antonio Brown is currently out of the NFL but if it was up to him he could retire as a Pittsburgh Steelers. The Pivot Podcast caught up with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and asked him would it happen? His response: “Y’all know that ain’t happening.”

“In terms of putting a helmet on and running out of the tunnel and playing ball and stuff like that, man. You know he’s moved on, and we’ve moved on,” Tomlin said. “We can sit around and chop that up like it’s a realistic conversation, but we know that’s not realistic.”

During a stellar nine-year run with the Steelers, Brown had 837 receptions, 11,207 yards, and 74 touchdowns. Tomlin would touch on those achievements.

“What I’ll say about AB is this man, we had nine great years,” Tomlin said. “I appreciate that dude in ways I can’t explain to y’all. I won’t even bother to attempt to explain to y’all because it sounds like I’m defending him in some way. And to me, from that standpoint, the nature of our relationship and what we all did together requires no defense.”

Last month, AB hit Twitter and revealed he wants to retire with the team he started his career with. In a couple of tweets, AB revealed his stance. “Just wanna retire a Steeler,” AB wrote. “Not play, just retire so we clear.”

Antonio Brown is currently focused on his music career. Earlier this year, he released his highly anticipated album Paradigm via Vydia & CAB Records. The new album features French Montana, DaBaby, Fivio Foreign, Young Thug, and Keyshia Cole, among others.

“Paradigm, to me means, your total perspective,” AB says of the album. “How you view the world, the lens through which you see everything. So a paradigm shift means a massive shift in how one sees everything. That’s what this album is about.”

SOURCE SPORTS: Baltimore Ravens LB Jaylon Ferguson Dead at 26

Jaylon Ferguson, outside linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens, has passed away. He was 26 years old.

“We are profoundly saddened by the tragic passing of Jaylon Ferguson,” the Ravens said in a statement. “He was a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and infectious personality. We express our heartfelt condolences to Jaylon’s family and friends as we mourn a life lost much too soon.”

Baltimore Police responded to a home in the Northern District of Baltimore on Tuesday at 11:25 p.m. Ferguson was unresponsive and receiving treatment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of reporting, there are no signs of foul play or trauma. Ferguson was transported to a medical examiner’s office. Invesitgators are not ruling out an overdose.

In his career, Ferguson had 67 takles and 4.5 sacks. He was known as “Sack Daddy” during his stint at Louisiana Tech.

“The LA Tech Family mourns this morning’s tragic news of the sudden death of former Bulldog great, Jaylon Ferguson,” the Louisiana Tech football team tweeted. “We will remember his God-given talents on the field and his infectious personality off of it. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Rest in peace to former NBA Player and Purdue Boilermakers star Caleb Swanigan. According to ESPN, the hoops star died at age 25.

According to the Allen County coroner’s office, Swanigan died of natural causes at a hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Monday night.

Swanigan was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2017 after his time at Purdue. He would spend three years in the league, also playing for the Sacramento Kings.

Swanigan was also named Mr. Basketball in 2015. He would also win Big Ten Player of the Year.

SOURCE SPORTS: Rob Gronkowski Announces Retirement from NFL

Rob Gronkowski is retiring. Again. One of the greatest tight ends of all time is calling it a career at the age of 33. Gronk made the announcement on social media.

“I want to thank the whole entire first class Buccaneers organization for an amazing ride, trusting me to come back to play and help build a championship team,” Gronkowski said in his statement. “I will now be going back into my retirement home, walking away from football again with my head held high knowing I gave it everything I had, good or bad, every time I stepped out on the field.

“The friendships and relationships I have made will last forever, and I appreciate every single one of my teammates and coaches for giving everything they had as well. From retirement, back to football and winning another championship and now back to chilling out, thank you to all.”

Gronk who retired after his stint with the New England Patriots returned from retirement at the call of Tom Brady. Gronk’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he would not be surprised if that happened again.

“It would not surprise me if Tom Brady calls him during the season to come back and Rob answers the call,” Rosenhaus said. “This is just my opinion, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Rob comes back during the season or next season.”

If it truly is a wrap, Gronk will finish his career with four Super Bowl wins, a four-time All-Pro, and five trips to the Pro Bowl. He also was named to the 2010s All-Decade Team and the 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. He also has the most career touchdowns by a tight end in postseason history. A future Hall of Fame resume for sure.
