SZA Didn’t Expect “Snooze” To Be A Hit Song: “Wasn’t My Favorite”

SZA bucked the curse of the sophomore slump and then some. The R&B superstar took a long time to follow up her debut album, Ctrl, but SOS proved to be an even bigger success on the charts. A lot of this success was due to the single “Snooze,” which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best R&B Song. It’s become one of SZA biggest hits, which is why she decided to share a funny anecdote about the song on X (formerly Twitter). The singer admitted that was not really a fan of “Snooze” when she first recorded it.

SZA broke the news to fans on April 24. “I’m not gon lie snooze wasn’t my favorite when I made the album,” she told her followers. Fortunately, the song grew on the singer as the sessions wore on, and it’s since become her favorite. “Now it’s my favorite hands down,” she added. “Played it at the beach and it was noiiiiiiceeeee. I’m late but thank y’all for riding til I got some sense.” It’s easy to see why SZA came back around on it. In addition to the Hot 100 placement and the Grammy, “Snooze” broke the record for most weeks atop the US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart with 30 weeks. It’s safe to assume she’s going to be playing it for the rest of her career.

SZA Says “Snooze” Has Become Her Favorite SOS Song

Miraculously, “Snooze” almost missed the cut for SOS. During an interview with Revolt, producer Leon Thomas revealed that the song was originally intended for a Babyface album. “Snooze” came about as SZA and Babyface were riffing in the studio. “It was a collaboration for Babyface’s new album, Girls Night Out,” Thomas revealed. “We were just getting creative and having Babyface walk in and out of the room and lay parts. We did the beat that same day, and she recorded the song on the same day.”

This spontaneity extended to the “Snooze” music video. SZA told WSJ Magazine that Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber FaceTimed her when she was planning the video, and she asked if Bieber wanted to be in it. The pop star obliged, and an iconic video resulted. “[Bieber] showed up and he was down as f*ck for the whole day,” SZA recalled. “and “[He] didn’t trip about nothing.” SZA is currently working on her follow up album, Lana, which was born out of unused songs from the SOS sessions.

As the most nominated artist of the 2024 Grammy Awards, all eyes are on SZA. Just days before the coveted ceremony, The Recording Academy announced that the “Snooze” singer would take the stage. During her sit down with Apple Music, SZA confessed that she initially got into music to her naysayers wrong.

But after reaching massive success, SZA is well beyond that, and her Grammy performance proved that. After pulling out of the 2023 VMAs, her onstage set during the 2024 Grammys carried that much more weight. SZA knocked it out of the park without skipping a beat, performing her first No. 1 song and hit single “Kill Bill,” along with some of “Snooze.”

In May 2023, SZA shared a touching note after learning of the milestone. “Took me over a week to process ’cause I dreamt of this my entire career,” she said. “It didn’t feel real, lol, and still doesn’t. But I wanna say THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS. Every person, every fan base, every ear that listened and pushed for me. Can’t believe we have a number 1 record.”

At the 2024 Grammys, SZA is up for nine awards, including Album of the Year (SOS), Song and Record of the Year (“Kill Bill”), Best Progressive R&B Album (SOS), Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Love Language”), Best R&B Song (“Snooze”), Best R&B Performance (“Kill Bill”), Best Melodic Rap Performance (“Low”) and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Ghost in the Machine”).

SZA’s “Snooze” Becomes The Only Song To Chart On The Hot 100 For All Of 2023

SZA’s new era was already a smash success by almost any metric and she’s continuing to pile up impressive achievements. Her album SOS dropped late last year and spent months on top of the Billboard 200. She scored a number-one hit with her single “Kill Bill” when she teamed up with Doja Cat for a remix. The song ultimately became the third biggest hit of 2023 on the Year End Hot 100. But shockingly, it wasn’t even her only song to land in the top 10 biggest hits of the year.

SZA also scored the ninth biggest song of 2023 with her post-album single “Snooze.” The track picked up right when “Kill Bill” began to slip from the top 10 and carried all of its momentum along. Now that the final charts of 2023 are able to be projected, the song achieved something even more impressive. It’s officially the only song to appear on every single Hot 100 chart throughout the entire year of 2023. Even some of the biggest smash hits of the year like Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” and Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” couldn’t pull that off as they were released too late. And the R&B superstar had a message to fans who have been supporting her the whole way.

SZA “Wrote Every Word” Of “Snooze” Punch From TDE Reveals

Just over a year ago, SZA finally returned with SOS, the long-awaited follow-up to her critically acclaimed breakout album CTRL. The album included some singles that had already connected with fans like “Good Days,” “I Hate You,” and “Shirt.” In the wake of the album’s release the track “Kill Bill” became the biggest of the bunch sticking around in the top 10 of the Hot 100 until deep into 2023. But eventually, it was surpassed by another song from the record which itself sits in the top 10 over a year after the album’s original release.

That song is “Snooze” which has racked up more than 650 million streams on Spotify alone since the album dropped last year. But earlier today, a twitter user raised some questions about the songwriting credits on the track in a now-deleted tweet. Before they got the chance to erase the post though, Punch from TDE made a quote tweet clarifying things. “lol. Y’all gotta chill. SZA wrote every word. Leon made the beat with Babyface and a couple others,” he explained. Check out his tweet and the various fan responses below.

Punch Explains Who Wrote SZA’s “Snooze”

Earlier this week, SZA began teasing a deluxe edition of SOS coming soon. The new version is called LANA and she first announced it earlier this year. The project doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet. But the various teases she shared on Instagram seem to indicate that it could be close. The deluxe edition of her previous album CTRL wasn’t released until 2022, a full 5 years after the album originally dropped.

Earlier this month, SZA spoke on one of the most controversial elements of modern music, leaked songs. She didn’t hold anything back promising fans that any tracks of her that got leaked wouldn’t ever be officially released. While she hasn’t been subjected to nearly as many leaks as some other artists, SZA was still frustrated by the possibility. What do you think of Punch’s response to a fans questions about who wrote SZA’s “Snooze?” Let us know in the comment section below.

SZA & Justin Bieber Link Up For Acoustic Version Of “Snooze”

SZA has been on a roll as of late. Overall, it started all the way back in 2022 thanks to her wonderful album S.O.S. This is a project that contained some of the artist’s best songs and singles. In fact, many of these singles have been doing big numbers on the Billboard chart. As it stands, the one that seems to be doing the best is none other than “Snooze.” This is a heartwarming ballad that has proven to be one of the best tracks on the entire album. However, it seems like SZA is not done with it yet.

Today, seemingly out of nowhere, the artist came through with a gorgeous new version of the track. This version is an acoustic ballad that comes complete with a feature from Justin Bieber. Interestingly enough, Bieber was in the music video for “Snooze.” Overall, many were questioning that decision and whether or not it was ultimately necessary. Although now that we have this new version of the track, it is clear that, yes, it was necessary.

SZA And Justin Bieber Give ‘Snooze’ A Dreamy Acoustic Update

After dropping a cinematic visual in which the two play lovers, SZA and Justin Bieber have shared a new version of “Snooze.”

The new version is a stripped down acoustic imagining of the S.O.S. cut, on which SZA’s vocals remain the same as the ones on the original. Bieber comes in on the second verse, also singing the lyrics of SZA’s original.

Elsewhere, the two harmonize, giving the song a sweet, cozy touch.

Last year, SZA teased a “SZA summer” at the Met Gala, teasing that her album, S.O.S. would be out that summer. Though the album didn’t arrive untiI that December, it manifested into something great for the singer. The song “Kill Bill” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and has since been her most successful single to date. She earned another top 10 single with the original version of “Snooze,” which has since peaked at No. 7.

In addition to Bieber, the song’s accompanying video features a cameo from Benny Blanco, who is seen eating French fries off of SZA’s backside.

Tomorrow (September 15), SZA and Drake are dropping a new collaboration, “Slime You Out,” which will surely end this SZA summer on a high note.

You can listen to “Snooze” above.

SZA’s Salacious ‘Snooze’ Video Stars Justin Bieber, Benny Blanco, Woody McClain, And Young Mazino

SZA has been teasing her video for the SOS track “Snooze.” The anticipation is high considering her epic video for her hit “Kill Bill,” packed with action and melodrama. It even had a cameo from Vivica A. Fox, who appeared in the iconic film of the same title.

The “Snooze” video does not disappoint. It flashes through different scenes of her with an array of lovers, one of them being Justin Bieber. There’s also Woody McClain, Young Mazino, and Benny Blanco. There’s a lot of cuddling, and one lover even eats french fries off of her bottom. There are some fights, and Bieber smokes a lot of weed. At one point, she seduces a robot, which was previously teased in a clip.

About appearing in the “Kill Bill” video, Fox said, “When I got it, I was surprised, to be honest with you. Cause they called… [It] took them five days to finally decide that they were going to hire me, ’cause I think they wanted Uma Thurman.”

“But when you think about it, it’s a little bit more fitting for SZA and Vivica to be together because we’re both African American women, and when it came out, people just ran with it,” she continued. “They were like, ‘They’re going to make Kill Bill 3, finally.’ Because people have been waiting for Kill Bill 3 for such a long time and see my daughter get revenge on Uma.”

Will SZA Release A Video For ‘Snooze?’

Last December, SZA dropped her long-awaited SOS album, and she experienced unprecedented success from it well into 2023, enough that Uproxx included it on the list of “Best R&B Albums Of 2023 So Far.” In January, she dropped the “Kill Bill” video, and she embarked on her headlining North American tour throughout February and March. The chart-topper’s second North American leg is scheduled to kick off on September 20 in Miami, Florida, and just as she did earlier this year, her tour run will be preceded by a big-time drop.

On Wednesday, August 23, SZA confirmed that the video for “Snooze” is coming this Friday, August 25. This comes roughly two weeks after she posted two steamy Instagram videos billed as behind-the-scenes “Snooze” footage.

As of this writing, “Snooze” has charted for 36 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 — peaking at No. 10 — and 15 weeks on Billboard‘s Radio Songs chart with a No. 4 peak. The song also spent 36 weeks on the publication’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, peaking at No. 3.

Along with “Kill Bill,” SZA has also released a video for SOS tracks “Nobody Gets Me,” which made her “really f*cking sad,” and “Shirt,” a song that fans had wanted SZA to release for two-plus years. Lakeith Stanfield starred opposite SZA in the latter video.

SZA’s NSFW Behind-The-Scenes Clip From Her ‘Snooze’ Video Is A Glorious Display Of Her Favorite Asset

Up to this point, SZA has treated fans to a handful of videos from her chart-topping album, SOS, including “Kill Bill,” “Shirt,” “I Hate You,” and bonus track “PSA,” However, the forthcoming cinematic short film for her record, “Snooze” is promising to be the most steamy to date.

In an NSFW behind-the-scenes clip shared on her official Instagram page, SZA put on a glorious display of her favorite asset: her purse-like derrière. As SZA sensually dances for her robot lover, she shows her bootylicious backside.

SZA loves to gush about her enhanced, hefty bottom. During an interview with Sylvia Obell for Elle, she said, “I treat my butt like a purse. It’s just there to enhance whatever else. And that’s why I paid for it because it works all by itself. I always wanted a really fat ass with less gym time. I didn’t succumb to industry pressure. I succumbed to my own eyes in the mirror and being like, ‘No, I need some more ass.’”

SZA hasn’t shared when fans should expect the video for “Snooze” to drop, but based on the second clip uploaded to her profile, she also has another one for an unreleased track on the way.
