On this date in 2000, West Coast rap giant Snoop Dogg released his fifth full-length studio album entitled The Last Meal, which was released on Master P’s Dirty South, independent powerhouse, No Limit Records, as well as the first album on Snoop’s Doggystyle Records. This album was released during the “dog days” of Death Row, with Snoop and Dre parting ways with their former boss and label owner Suge Knight. The album was leaked on the internet on December 1, 2000, by Suge Knight who made all tracks downloadable in MP3 from the official site of his and Snoop Dogg’s former company Death Row Records, which featured links to tracks from both Tha Last Meal and Dead Man Walkin’ albums, asking visitors to “take The Snoop Dogg Challenge” and decide “song for song” which is the better album.

There was some heavy production on the album, with tracks primarily from Dr. Dre and Master P, adding Timbaland and Soopafly to the unique flavor of this project as well. The most recognizable track from the album was “Lay Low” a melodic track featuring Butch Cassidy, The Outsidaz with Nate Dogg singing the hook and Dr. Dre behind the boards, capturing that original G-funk sound of the 213.

Salute to Snoop, Master P, Dre and the entire No Limit/Death Row teams who helps mold this timeless classic!

Snoop Dogg Said Nipsey Hussle Declined ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Role Because He Didn’t Want To Be Compared To Him

Snoop Dogg opened up in a recent interview about why Nipsey Hussle didn’t appear in the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton. The hip-hop veteran stopped by 85 South Show to chat with hosts Karlous Miller, DC Young Fly, and Chico Bean about his exchange with the late rapper. Snoop reveals that Nipsey was worried about being in the rapper’s shadow and thought it would be better to cultivate his own identity.

“I hit him up,” Snoop said. “[I said,] ‘Nip, lemme holla at you! Pull up on me!’ He come over to the spot. ‘Cuh, they want you to play me in the Straight Outta Compton movie!’ I’m happy as fuck to tell him.”

“He like, ‘No disrespect, big homie, but I can’t play you in the movie ’cause then people just gon’ know me for being you. I gotta be me. All that’s with all due respect.’ And I was like, damn, that was gangsta. I [called Dre and Cube back and] said, ‘Y’all gotta go find somebody else!’”

The role of Snoop would ultimately go to Oscar-nominated actor Lakeith Stanfield, and Straight Outta Compton went on to gross over $200 million at the box office.

Unfortunately that would be Nipsey’s last opportunity for a role on the big screen. The California rapper was gunned down in front of Marathon Store in his hometown of Los Angeles in March 2019.

Snoop Loopz No More: Snoop Dogg And Master P’s Cereal Officially Has A New Name

Snoop Dogg and Master P had been faced with some legal pressure about the name of their rap-centric cereal, Snoop Loopz. The brand is set to debut soon, but a name change had to be in order before the official launch of the breakfast food via Snoop and Master P’s company, Broadus Foods.

“So they don’t want us to use Snoop Loopz on our cereal box even though that’s that’s my name,” Snoop Dogg wrote on Instagram last week. “We’ve built a national brand and disrupted the cereal industry, we did it with hard work and integrity. I know they’re uncomfortable and scared. But our mission is to build diversity and economic empowerment.” Adding that, “It’s official we’re taking over the breakfast foods industry. They can’t stop us. It’s David versus Goliath. Master P and I got the slingshot. This is a minor setback for a major comeback.”

Now the decision has been made. The cereal line will forever be known as simply “Snoop Cereal” and it currently features three individual cereal flavors. They made the announcement in a YouTube clip and the Doggfather emphatically said “They can’t take that from me!”

The video is like an unboxing for their line of cereal like the new Frosted Drizzlers, Fruity Hoopz with Marshmallows, and Cinnamon Toasteez. Master P touted they are the “first Black-owned cereal company that’s nationwide and able to reach families everywhere.” He also said, “I wanna let y’all know that this is healthy, cause everyone keeps saying ‘make some healthy cereals!’” Before Snoop added, “We gonna look out for you. You wanna be healthy? We gonna make it healthy for you.”

Snoop Dogg Recalls When He Asked Nipsey Hussle To Play Him In ‘Straight Outta Compton’

Snoop Dogg Compares Nipsey Hussle to Tupac Shakur: 'I Think the Spirit of Tupac Was Nipsey'

Straight Outta Compton is often regarded as one of the best hip-hop biopics of all time and should be considered one of the greatest music biopics as well. Viewers could tell that heavy consideration was put into everything, including the casting. The film featured cameo’s of other famous rappers outside of NWA such as 2Pac and even Snoop Dogg, who was played by Lakeith Stanfield. However, before Stanfield was considered for the role of the Long Beach MC, producers wanted to cast Nipsey Hussle as the role.

Snoop Dogg revealed this on a recent episode of the 85 South Show. Snoop also shared the conversation that he had with Nip and why Nip decided to turn the offer down.

“They was doing Straight Outta Compton movie right? So Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, all them n-ggas calling me. Man, we trying to get Nip to play you in Straight Outta Compton! He ain’t getting back to us!’ [I’m like] ‘Aight, let me holla at the lil homie,” Snoop said.

He then called Nip where he turned down the offer because he believed that if he took the role, people would only know him for portraying Snoop, and the Victory Lap artist wanted to forge his own name.

“I hit him up,” Snoop continued. “[I said,] ‘Nip, lemme holla at you! Pull up on me!’ He come over to the spot. ‘Cuh, they want you to play me in the Straight Outta Compton movie!’ I’m happy as fuck to tell him. He like, ‘No disrespect big homie, but I can’t play you in the movie ’cause then people just gon’ know me for being you. I gotta be me. All that’s with all due respect.’ And I was like damn that was gangsta. I [called Dre and Cube back and] said, ‘Y’all gotta go find somebody else!’”

Snoop Dogg Has Been In Rap So Long That He Used To Use A Typewriter To Write Out His Lyrics

Snoop Dogg’s esteemed debut album, 1993’s Doggystyle, turns 30 years old next year. Indeed, Snoop has been in hip-hop for a long time, and during his tenure, times have changed: Early in his career, he used to type his lyrics with a typewriter, he revealed in a recent interview on The 85 South Comedy Show.

At about 43 minutes into the video, Snoop was asked about G-funk group The Dove Shack and he responded, “2Scoops, that was in the group… when I first started writing raps, I used to use that n**** typewriter.” After some playful ribbing from the hosts, he continued:

“I was writing on paper ’cause I would lose my sh*t and this n**** typewriter was organized. This n**** had paper organized and sh*t, so I’m like, ‘I’m just gonna type my sh*t up.’ Man, I used to type like 65 words a minute, n****. […] It was a skill I took up at junior high school, at the little white junior high school I went to. They gave a n**** typing class and I took it. I was one of them students that was like… I took a wood class, a metal class, I took typing, I took home economics. I took classes that was, like, different.”

Snoop Dogg Says 2Pac Inspired His “Pimp” Style

Snoop Dogg is easily one of the most identifiable figures in hip-hop, and pop culture as a whole, but perhaps, that wouldn’t have happened without 2Pac.

During a recent appearance on The 85 South Comedy Show, Snoop Dogg explained that he was never comfortable with embracing a flamboyant fashion sense until 2Pac pushed him towards it. He recalled still dressing in khakis and Chucks after the success of Doggystyle. However, ‘Pac said that he needed to elevate his style to appeal to a wider audience.

“[2Pac] like, ‘Me and you finna have a meeting… We stepping our game up. We gotta change your look, Snoop Dogg. You a pimp, n***a. Bitches love you. You fly. You gotta start showing your fly side,” Snoop recalled. “‘I’ma get you suited up.’ ‘I’ma call this n***a Dion Scott, get your suits fitted, get your hair laid, get your nails done. Put some pimpin’ on screen, n***a.’”

The result of the pep talk inspired the look in 2Pac and Snoop’s “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” music video in 1996, which certainly marked a shift in Snoop’s career. However, Snoop explained that he wasn’t necessarily comfortable with making the stylistic shift at first.

“Just look at how I’m standing next to cuh when I’m wearing it. I’m trying to figure it out! I’m like, ‘Do I look right? I hope I don’t look sweet ’cause these pants tight as a muthafucka!’” Snoop Dogg continued, explaining that ‘Pac had him in “all this Italian that” that he “couldn’t even spell or pronounce.”

“Once I got comfortable with it, then it was like, ‘OK, this n***a’s teaching me how to be a star.’ Like, levels and layers,” Snoop continued. “‘We know you gangsta, dawg, but can you go higher than that? What if a n***a call you to be in a movie where they want you to be a lawyer? What if a n***a wants you to be a detective?’”
