Smino And J. Cole Feel The Burn From Their ’90 Proof’ Collaboration

After teasing his new collaboration with J. Cole, “90 Proof,” earlier this week, Smino released the single overnight and shared a behind-the-scenes teaser from its upcoming music video on Instagram. As is the custom for a Smino release, “90 Proof” is a slinky cut co-produced by frequent collaborator Monte Booker and Groove, all brush snares and gyrating bass, with both rappers doing their things. Smino sing-raps a soulful confessional to a woman he’s been keeping at arm’s length, while J. Cole goes full speed ahead detailing his own authenticity.

“90 Proof” is the latest single from Smino’s long-awaited third album, Luv 4 Rent. The follow-up to his 2018 album Noir, he’s been cooking up his new project for quite some time, dropping “Rice & Gravy” in spring 2021. Toward the end of the year, he followed up with “I Deserve,” and since then, he’s been filling up his 2022 schedule with a string of impressive guest features with the likes of Syd (“Right Track“), Lucky Daye (“God Body“), Saba (“Still” with 6lack), and Tiana Major9 (“2 Seater“).

Before all that, Smino released the surprise mixtape She Already Decided in 2020, building on the buzz from his previous well-received albums. There’s still no word on his Ghetto Sage group project with Noname and Saba, but at least his new album is on the way; without a firm date, all we’ve got to go on so far is “Droptober.” The countdown starts tomorrow.

Smino Shares The Release Date For ’90 Proof,’ His Upcoming Song With J. Cole

We last heard from St. Louis rapper Smino earlier this month, when he released the Phoelix-produced single “24-8.” It was the first new solo song from him since he’d announced his upcoming third studio album, Luv 4 Rent — his first since leaving Interscope for Motown in 2021. The iconoclastic rapper has been pretty cagey about his new album since then, but today, he finally revealed some new information about its upcoming single. Titled “90 Proof,” the new song will also feature J. Cole. Earlier this month, he previewed the slow-burning single on St. Louis radio while streaming with fans on Instagram Live.

Although Smi’s been relatively quiet on the solo tip since dropping “I Deserve” last year, he hasn’t been in complete hibernation. Early this year, he reconnected with Chicago rapper Saba and 6lack on Saba’s Few Good Things single “Still,” linked up with British singer Tiana Major9 on “2 Seater,” and appeared on albums by Lucky Daye, Syd, and Earthgang.

Although Smino’s last album, Noir, came out nearly four years ago, he hasn’t left fans hanging. In 2020, he used the free time provided by quarantine to record a surprise mixtape, She Already Decided. It has since been removed from the internet — officially — but we’re sure you’re can still find it if you’re hungry enough. In the meantime, you can look forward to Luv 4 Rent in October and its lead single, “90 Proof,” dropping this Friday.

Smino Drops An Introspective Single Called ’24-8′

Ahead of his upcoming album, Luv 4 Rent, Smino has dropped a new single called “24-8.” On the track, Smino delivers introspective rhymes over a chill, whistletone-ridden beat.

“I parked on Parker road / I took the route that’s hella scenic / Bare my heart on all these songs / And leave my soul all on all the speakers,” he rap-sings.

Upon the release of the song, Smino has taken to social media to show an open letter to fans, detailing what he’s been through in the time leading up to the album.

“It been a while…,” he said. “I Spent Alotta time becoming a better fren to myself..I spent Alotta time searching for time I already had…I spent Alotta time tryna make this shit perfect only to realize the only perfect things come from God and just being myself is perfect bc I come from God Himself…I spent Alotta moments wondering if I even gave a f*ck about dropping Music bcuz in dis world…it seems like the talent isn’t appreciated as much as the ‘Challenge’ or the moment..”

While he has not revealed an exact release date for Luv 4 Rent, Smino teased in his letter that the album will arrive in “Droptober,” a term he has used over the years when sharing music in October.
