Smino Gets A Tattoo From A Grade Schooler In His Reflective ‘Dear Fren’ Video

Remember when you were in grade school and the kids used to draw all over the desks? Well, Smino does, and he puts a talented ten-year-old’s artistic skills to use in his video for “Dear Fren,” giving the tween a tattoo gun instead of a ballpoint and putting himself between the needle and the desk. The results (which are likely CGI, so don’t worry, he didn’t really get a tattoo from someone who shops in the kids’ section at Old Navy) are typical of what you’d expect: A Stussy logo, what looks like a cartoon bunny, and handwriting practice tables. It’s cute!

“Dear Fren” appears on Smino’s fourth studio album, Maybe In Nirvana, which he released independently today. He recorded the ten-track project during COVID-19 lockdowns, which accounts for the reflective nature of songs like “Dear Fren,” and why it has taken so long to put it out. Themes so heavy deserve lighter times (and times are probably about as light as we can expect them to be for the foreseeable future). The album features guest appearances from Bun B, Ravyn Lenae, and Thundercat.

Now… Ghetto Sage, please?

Smino Looks Inward On Mellow New Album “Maybe In Nirvana”

Nobody sounds like Smino. The St. Louis rapper has been forthright about his musical influences, but he’s able to put such a unique spin on them that he always sounds like himself. Smino continues to prove that he is carving his own hip hop lane with his new album, Maybe In Nirvana. In an era largely defined by overly-long, unfocused projects, Smino treats fans to a concise, ten-track exploration of himself and the people in his life. “Dear Fren,” the first proper track, employs one of the strangest Smino vocals to date, but his lyrics keep the listener engrossed from start to finish.

Mellow is definitely the operative word for Maybe In Nirvana. The album may traffic in emotional strife and turmoil, but Smino packages it within smooth melodies and soulful instrumentation. The title track is the closest the album to a bop, thanks to the snappy drums and the whistle sample. Smino raps with the utmost conviction, which makes his pivot to singing on the next song, “Lee,” all the more impressive. He can do it all, while still maintaining sonic cohesion. Maybe In Nirvana may just be Smino’s most focused album to date, which is saying a lot. It’s the sort of the album that gets better with each new listen.

St. Louis’ own, Smino, is returning with a new album this week, his first since 2022’s Luv 4 Rent. The new album, Maybe In Nirvana, is due on Friday, December 6, bringing nine new songs with titles paying homage to staples of his millennial upbringing such as “Ready Set Goku” and “NSYNC.” Smino announced the album with “Soufside Skit,” a short video offering an early listen to the soulful music as Smino rides in the back of a station wagon with a young woman who can’t help complaining about the Midwestern heat.

Smino’s had a relatively quiet 2024, dropping the video for “Polynesian” back in June, and recently popping back up with a feature on Aminé’s new single, “Passenger Princess.” Last year, though, he joined JID on their joint Luv Is 4ever Tour promoting his and JID’s 2022 albums. He also joined Noname in her NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert to remind fans that they still haven’t dropped their Ghetto Sage project with Saba — but such are the trials of releasing music independently.

Maybe In Nirvana is due 12/6 via Zero Fatigue. You can pre-save it here. See below for the tracklist.

Critically acclaimed artist Smino is set to release his new album, Maybe in Nirvana, this Friday, promising a nine-track journey into his creative depths. The project showcases Smino’s signature poetic lyricism while exploring themes of love, self-discovery, and resilience.

“This project is me exploring my own nirvana—my peace, my chaos, and everything in between,” says Smino. “Every song is a piece of me that ties into the bigger picture. I wanted to make something that feels limitless, like it could live outside of time.”

Collaborating with talents like Thundercat, Monte Booker, Kenny Beats, and Groove, alongside featured artists Bun B, Ravyn Lanae, and Reggie, the album blends intricate instrumentation with genre-defying melodies. Maybe in Nirvana is poised to elevate Smino’s groundbreaking legacy, delivering a rich, introspective sonic experience. Fans can expect a deeply immersive exploration of Smino’s artistry as he continues to push musical boundaries.

Amine Showcases His Musical Range On Eclectic “.mp3s” EP

Amine has been keeping a low profile the last few years. He dropped a chilled out collab album with KAYTRANADA in 2023, but fans have to go all the way back to 2021 for a solo release. This is partially why the .mp3s EP is so exciting. It proves Amine is back up and running. There are four songs littered throughout this brief project, and we’re happy to report that all of them are good. They stand on their own, yet together they provide a broad picture of Amine’s range as a rapper. Fans already got to hear two of the songs before the EP’s release: “Passenger Princess” and “Adam.”

“Passenger Princess” is the most traditional piece of hip hop on the EP. Amine and Smino trade bars over a catchy soul chop. The duo have chemistry, and while they share eccentric deliveries, they sound varied enough to stand out. “Adam” is an guitar based ballad that sees Amine shift down into a Brockhampton sound. It works, and proves that he may even be an underrated vocalist. The new songs on here, “s2wik” and “Wingz” are similarly varied. The former is one of the strangest songs Amine has dropped yet, a tiny, glitchy electronic ballad with Autotune. “Wingz” sees him dig back into traditional rap territory alongside Cardo Got Wings. It’s brief, it’s fun, and you’ll like it.

Aminé Returns With A Pair Of New Singles: ‘Adam’ And ‘Passenger Princess’ With Smino

It looks like Aminé is ready for a proper return. The Portland rapper just shared a pair of new songs: the self-titled “Adam” (which is his real first name) and the Smino collaboration “Passenger Princess.” You can listen to both below.

On “Adam,” Aminé utilizes a slower beat to address a cooling romance. “Put your pride aside, come walk with me,” he croons. “I cater to you, please, tell me what you need.”

Meanwhile, “Passenger Princess” samples Total’s “Tell Me,” for a groovy, more boastful angle on relationships. Smino flexes his usual intricate, half-sung style, quipping, “Sometimes, she mad ’cause I’m so aloof and she want me in involved / Sometimes, she hungry, sometimes, she jealous, sometimes, she wrong / Say life is a bitch, I guess I know more ’bout that bitch than I thought.”

From the way the two tracks are presented, it does look a lot like Aminé is preparing to drop a new album, his first since 2020’s Limbo (although he did drop a mixtape, TwoPointFive, in 2021, and the Kaytranada collaboration, Kaytraminé, in 2023). The two tracks follow his remix of Charli XCX’s “360,” “360.5,” which he released in July.

You can listen to Aminé’s new singles “Adam” and “Passenger Princess” with Smino above.

Amine Teams Up With Smino For “Passenger Princess /Adam” Two Pack

It’s always a joy when Amine has a new song or project out. The Portland, Oregon native always seems to be able to evoke loose and chill vibes. It’s a quality that his fans are definitely appreciative of and it’s what they come to expect. They have been in Amine’s IG comments section under his announcement post for “Passenger Princess / Adam.” “Gonna paint and sip while I float to these new tracks🙂↕” one user says. “Gonna be in my dorm doing homework, ts gonna get me on that academic grind 💪💪” another adds.

This is a new two pack that was just released hours ago and it’s also got a feature from the ever so talented Smino. Shockingly, this is the first time we have heard these expressive and idiosyncratic talents together. But unsurprisingly, they mesh perfectly as they both also have a knack for penning some hilarious one liners no matter the tone of the song. “Passenger Princess” and “Adam” are both relationship songs but share drastically different approaches to the subject. The former is much more casual, as Amine and Smino detail the carefree and sexually active connection they share with their ladies. “Adam,” though, is more serious, with Adam Amine Daniel giving everything he has to his partner despite her shortcomings. He’s extremely insecure and anxious on it and the lyrics really cut deep. Check out the two pack below and let us know what you think.

Kal Banx Releases Smooth “HOP OUT CHO FEELINGS” With Smino & Buddy

Kal Banx is a producer from Dallas, Texas. He first made his name by producing tracks on Revenge Of The Dreamers III, before moving on to Isaiah Rashad, SiR, and Smino. He officially became part of Top Dawg Entertainment’s team of in-house producers in 2021. His latest track features Buddy and the aforementioned Smino, who both skate over a smooth beat with a soul sample in the background. Smino’s verse sounds particularly effortless, sounding similar to Krayzie Bone in terms of how he flows on the track. It also features some of Smino’s trademark singing passages. Everything comes together to create a track that would not sound out of place on one of his albums.

“HOP OUT CHO FEELINGS” is the latest appearance for Smino. Earlier this year, he released the singles “Polynesian,” “Nokia,” and “mister misfit but ain’t missed a fit in months.” He claimed in January that he had three albums ready to be released in 2024. However, none of those albums have seen a release yet. His previous album, Luv 4 Rent, was released in October 2022. At the end of 2023, he joined Noname and Saba to premiere a new song by their Ghetto Sage supergroup during Noname’s Tiny Desk Concert. Buddy released his latest album, Don’t Forget To Breathe, this past March. His album also featured Smino, marking their first release together in years. They both appeared on the Revenge Of The Dreamers III‘s track “1993.” As for Kal Banx, the next time fans will probably hear production from him on an album is when Isaiah Rashad’s next release comes. Rashad has yet to announce a release date, but confirmed its existence earlier this year. Stream the new song and watch the music video from Banx, Buddy, and Smino below.
