It’s always nice to hear that one of the biggest singers in the world thinks you’re the best, but Patrick Mahomes was left the butt of a joke. We often hear NFL players speak of their rivals or tensions on the field. However, most of the league are friends, and they like to poke fun at one another. Sometimes that unravels publicly, and Mahomes found himself the target of Brandon Marshall.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback hopes to lead his team to victory at the Super Bowl this weekend. Mahomes was speaking to the press when he was asked, “Rihanna came out and said that you are the greatest quarterback ever. Hearing that, how does that make you feel?” The question came from former NFL star Brandon Marshall standing with the media. Of course, the thought of Rihanna’s praise was exciting for Mahomes.
“It makes me feel great,” said the Chiefs star. “She’s gonna crush it at halftime, I have family members that I think are more excited about the halftime show than they are the game. So whatever Rihanna says is like the gospel. I’m glad she went with me for that honor.” Quickly, his dreams were shot down when Marshall smiled and replied that the singer hadn’t said that at all. It made for a good laugh, but Rihanna felt bad for Mahomes’s embarrassment.
Later, Marshall bumped into RiRi and relayed the story of the prank. Although it was amusing, she looked into the camera and spoke directly to Mahomes. “I am so sorry you went through that [Patrick]. I still think you’re great. [Brandon’s] a hater!” she said. “That is so mean. [Brandon] is mean, ok? I am so sorry you went through that, okay.”
Meanwhile, Rihanna is gearing up for an epic performance at the Super Bowl halftime show. The singer hasn’t given much information about what to expect—or if she plans on having any special guests. Jay-Z and T.I.’s names have floated about, while others are hoping for Eminem to grace the stage once again. In a press conference, Rihanna revealed that she decided to take to the stage this year as inspiration. Not just for her adoring fans but for her young son, as well.
The “Umbrella” singer also caught up with football player Brandon Marshall that same day at a press event. He was feeling like a prankster, though; earlier that week, he asked Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, “Rihanna came out and said that you are the greatest quarterback ever. Hearing that, how does that make you feel?”
“It makes you feel great,” Mahomes answered. “Whatever Rihanna says is like the gospels. So I’m glad that she went with me for that honor.”
“She didn’t. I was messing with you,” Marshall revealed.
When Marshall informed her of this, Rihanna comforted Mahomes by offering apologies, “I’m so sorry you went through that,” she said. “I still think you’re great.” Upon learning about the lie, she said, “That’s so mean. He is mean, OK.”
“I still think you’re great. He’s [@BMarshall] a hater.”
On Wednesday, Brandon Marshall pranked Patrick Mahomes at #SUPERBOWL media availability
In her Apple Music interview yesterday, Rihanna also discussed new material. “Musically, I’m feeling open. I’m feeling open to exploring, discovering, creating things that are new. Things that are different. Things that are off, weird, might not ever make sense to my fans [or] the people that know the music that I put out. I just wanna play. I wanna have fun. I want to have to fun with music.”
With the Super Bowl 2 days away, many are anticipating Rihanna’s return to the big stage. It has been 7 years since she released an album and went on tour. Even though within those 7 years, she grew her Savage X Fenty brand to astronomical heights, became a billionaire, and a mother, people are still waiting on new Rihanna music, only raising the stakes for her upcoming halftime performance. With that said, here are 5 things that we at The Source want to see during Rih’s performance.
1.Jay-Z Guest Appearance During “Run This Town”
“Run This Town” is arguably one of the best ensemble tracks ever to be released. When it dropped in 2009, the track reached #2 on Billboard and made a statement, with Hov even saying that he, Rihanna, and Kanye are on the song because they run this town. Little would we know, over a decade later, all three would become billionaires, despite one person on the song recently losing that status. But nonetheless, we think Rih should perform the track and have Jay-Z come out to do a verse, after all, there were reports of him helping Rihanna with her performance. We’d love to see Ye come and do his verse but we can only imagine the PR nightmare the NFL would face.
2. A Tour Announcement Following The Performance
Even though this wouldn’t take place during the halftime show, we want to get a tour announcement shortly following the performance. Rihanna’s last tour was in 2016 following her critically acclaimed album Anti. There has even been some speculation and rumors floating around saying that a world tour will be announced after the halftime show. According to PageSix, insiders are saying that Rih is gearing up to go on a world tour and has been hidden so well that even people in her crew don’t even know about it.
3. An New Album Announcement or Release
Much like the tour announcement, we’d love to get an announcement about a new Rihanna album after her performance. In the last 7 years, there’s no telling how many songs she’s recorded. The last song we got from her was just last year when she released “Lift Me Up,” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. Nonetheless, if there are rumors circulating about a tour drop, that must mean that there is some music to drop soon as well.
4. A Drake Guest Appearance
Some of the most memorable moments in a Super Bowl Halftime Show are the guest appearances. Remember what it was like to see Beyoncé come out during Super Bowl 50? We totally even forgot Coldplay was the main performer. We already said we’d like a Jay-Z guest appearance, but a Drake one might take the cake. Given the two’s history, both inside and outside of music, seeing them perform one of their songs on the stage together would be a great, and probably messy moment to witness. But it would show a lot of growth out of Drake who till this day laments about his exes.
5. A Statement
Rihanna boycotted the NFL in 2016 following the unfair treatment of Colin Kaepernick for kneeling during the national anthem. She said in an interview with Vogue at the time that she had actually been offered to perform at the Super Bowl but turned it down because she felt like she would be a “sellout” if she went forward with the opportunity. Fast forward to 2022, and Rihanna announces that she’s performing at Super Bowl LVII. Granted, things have changed since then, with Kaepernick settling a collusion case against the NFL in 2019 and the league partnering with Roc Nation through the Inspire Change Initiative. But there’s still obvious racism going on within the NFL, take the fact that there are only 3 black head coaches in a Black player-dominated league. There’s no doubt that Jay-Z had a big reason why Rihanna finally decided to perform at a Super Bowl, but the question is did Rihanna simply take the job to just perform and make a grand re-entrance into the spotlight, or will she take the opportunity to make a statement during her performance.
We are just days away now from the biggest annual sporting event in the United States. This year’s Super Bowl LVII will take place on Sunday (Feb. 12) in Glendale, AZ. Being played in State Farm Stadium, the game will feature the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. Each of these franchises has won this game once in the last five years. For Philly, this is their first trip to the game since 2018. For the Chiefs, this is their third appearance since 2020.
But, as big of a matchup this seems to be, it might not even be the main attraction. Every year the big game is able to recruit superstars for their halftime show. This year, though, may end up being one of their biggest yet. Rihanna will be this year’s performer, as her preparations are being aided by JAY-Z and his company Roc Nation. After she graces the nation’s biggest stage this weekend, she also plans to embark on a headlining tour soon after. With this big of a moment ahead of us, even some of the players in Sunday’s game are excited.
Patrick Mahomes Gets Duped
During the media day press conferences for the Super Bowl this week, Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a trick played on him. When bringing up Rihanna’s highly anticipated performance, a reporter mentioned how much Rihanna adores Pat. “Rihanna came out and said that you are the greatest quarterback ever. Hearing that, how does that make you feel?” he asked Mahomes. Excitedly, Mahomes replied by saying his family is probably looking forward to seeing Rihanna more than seeing him play. “It makes me feel great. She’s gonna crush it at halftime, I have family members that I think are more excited about the halftime show than they are the game. So whatever Rihanna says is like the gospel. I’m glad she went with me for that honor.”
However, the reporter immediately rescinded his statement, admitting that he was playing a prank on Pat. “She didn’t, Im just messing with you,” he said. Disappointed, Mahomes replied, “Aw, man. You got me up here smiling and smirking.” Regardless, Pat does not need the validation of celebrities to know his worth. He is undoubtably one of the best QBs in football. On the flip side, Rihanna is one of the best performers and musicians of her generation. She will surely remind the world of that this weekend, as sources have said she “can’t wait to kill it” out there.
This Black History month, Rihanna is making her presence felt in more ways than one. Not only is the Bad Gal due to perform during halftime at the upcoming Super Bowl this weekend, but she’s also got a new wax figure that made its debut in New York City earlier this week. Of course, this isn’t her first time being brought to life by the visionaries over at Madame Tussauds. However, it is arguably the most iconic outfit we’ve seen her in.
As Billboard notes, the historic museum shared the news on Tuesday (February 7). This time around, we’ll see the 34-year-old wearing her gown from the 2018 Met Gala. She co-chaired the party alongside Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, and Amal Clooney. The event’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, and wore an elaborate design by Margiela.
Her look consisted of a beaded corset minidress and a matching robe. For accessories, Rihanna donned an unmissable crucifix necklace and a papal bishop’s hat. To this day, the glamorous outfit is still a favourite – as are countless other past Met Gala fashion statements made by the ANTI singer.
On Wednesday (February 8), Madame Tussauds New York unveiled the new wax figure. It now lives in the museum’s Glow Gala Room. The LED lights hidden throughout her clothing allow Rih to perfectly fit in with the neon-themed section. In a statement, manager Joerg Hanel explained his excitement over the new statue.
“Rihanna is sure to make history with her upcoming live show this Sunday,” he gushed. “The timing is perfect for us to reveal her new figure exclusively at Madame Tussauds New York where fans can admire and pose with the icon.” Aside from the 2018 Met Gala recreation, the franchise’s Orlando location will also reportedly release a Super Bowl-themed RiRi later this year.
Of course, the “Rude Boy” hitmaker isn’t the only celebrity the wax workers are honouring as of late. Earlier this month, Beyoncé’s latest recreation came out. Although it obviously looks better than past iterations, many social media users agree that something is still off. See for yourself here, and check back later for more pop culture news updates.
When the Super Bowl was held in Atlanta, T.I., unfortunately, didn’t get to hit the stage but perhaps, he’ll make up for it during Rihanna’s highly-anticipated halftime show. The “Born Again” singer recently held a press conference where she provided a bit of information. From what we know, it’ll be a thirteen-minute set filled with some of her biggest hits. However, the specific details haven’t been revealed as of yet, including the potential surprise guests she might bring out.
Over the past few months, fans have speculated that she’ll bring a few artists out on stage. Given the number of hit records she has in her arsenal, specifically with hip-hop’s elite, it seems possible that she might bring out some A-Listers. Previous reports indicated that Jay-Z’s had a role in helping Rihanna with her performance. However, one might wonder if he’ll hit the stage. The two have collaborated on massive records like “Run The Town” and “Umbrella” – two massive singles that would be fitting for the Super Bowl stage.
Is T.I. Performing At The Super Bowl With Rihanna?
Billboard recently asked T.I. whether he’ll appear during the halftime show with Rihanna to perform, “Live Your Life.” After all, the Paper Trail banger topped the Billboard Hot 100 and later, was certified platinum. “Zip it. Ay man, I will not confirm or deny any potential appearance. It’s an awesome opportunity,” he said. “It was awesome to have the opportunity to work with such an iconic figure and such a prolific individual and such a beautiful spirit altogether. We’ll see what happens.”
It seems like we’ll have to wait until Sunday to see if T.I. and Rihanna will reunite on stage. However, if not this weekend, then perhaps, down the line. Rumors began floating this week that Rihanna’s currently plotting a tour. So, if she ends up in Atlanta or the surrounding area, hopefully, we’ll see her bring out T.I. to perform their chart-topping single. For now, we’ll have to see what Rihanna has up her sleeves for her performance this weekend. Sound off in the comments with your predictions for Rihanna’s halftime show performance and let us know what songs you want to hear.
And while we still don’t know how long we’ll have to wait for her first album since 2016’s Anti, Rihanna gave us a taste of what it will sound like during her Apple Music press conference held today, February 9, in Arizona.
Interviewer Nadeska asked Rihanna toward the end of the short sit-down to describe “this chapter and how you’re feeling musically in general.”
Rihanna said, “Musically, I’m feeling open. I’m feeling open to exploring, discovering, creating things that are new. Things that are different. Things that are off, weird, might not ever make sense to my fans [or] the people that know the music that I put out. I just wanna play. I wanna have fun. I want to have to fun with music.”
Rihanna technically returned to music by contributing tracks “Lift Me Up” and “Born Again” to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack last fall, but Rihanna’s Navy wants a full-blown era — leading to rumors about a potential album or tour post-Super Bowl.
Elsewhere in the interview, Rihanna shared that she’s cycled through 39 (!) versions of her Super Bowl setlist. She also admitted that she’s “been so focused” on preparing for the performance that she “totally forgot that my birthday is coming up” and “totally forgot about Valentine’s Day.” But, to her, the grueling task will be worth it.
Rihanna explained that she received the offer to headline Super Bowl LVII when she was three months postpartum, having welcomed her and ASAP Rocky’s son last spring.
“When you become a mom, there’s something that just happens where you feel like you could take on the world, you can do anything,” she told Nadeska. “The Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world, so as scary as that was because I haven’t been on stage in seven years, there’s something exhilarating about the challenge of it all. It’s important for me to do this this year. It’s important for representation. It’s important for my son to see that.”
The richest artists in the music industry do not make most of their money from music. Take Jay-Z for example, the bulk of his yearly income comes from his investments in brands like Tidal, Armand de Brignac, D’Ussé, and his Roc Nation entertainment and sport management agencies. It’s the same with Kanye West thanks to his entities like Yeezy and GOOD Music as well as Diddy thanks to some hefty real estate investments. Contrary to what one might expect in such a male-dominated industry and world, at the top of the wealthiest musicians list sits none other than this weekend’s Super Bowl halftime show performer, Rihanna. Her monetary success is also mostly credited to profits outside of the music world, but there are several things that make her’s different from the rest.
Rihanna’s rise to being the music industry’s wealthiest artist didn’t come as a result of smart (or lucky) investing or a sharp talent with real estate. The Barbados-born superstar achieved astounding monetary success through Fenty, a fashion and beauty brand created to offer products that amplified her consumers’ beauty regardless of their gender, size, skin color, and more. According to Forbes, Rihanna’s current net worth is $1.4 billion and it’s not too difficult to see why that might be the case. Fenty is largely responsible for that number as it houses companies like Fenty Beauty, Savage X Fenty, and Fenty Skin, all of which were launched between 2017 and 2020. Fenty itself was launched in 2019 under the fashion house LVMH which made Rihanna the first woman to create an original brand for the fashion house and the first woman of color to lead an LVMH brand. That’s just one example of Rihanna’s milestone career outside of music. Fenty is undoubtedly not only a highlight for Rihanna, but it’s also a story to be studied and appreciated by all businessmen and businesswomen in the future. What makes its success even more applauding is that Rihanna nearly went bankrupt a decade before Fenty launched.
In 2009, Business Insider reported that her income plummeted from nearly $50 million to $2 million due to severe financial mismanagement from her accounting team. Three years later, she sued the accounting firm for mismanagement and won $10 million in damages. It should be noted that these three years were the most active in Rihanna’s career as she released four albums – Rated R, Loud, Talk That Talk, and Unapologetic – in that time span. It would be another four years until Rihanna delivered another project, that of course being Anti, and to this day, we’re still waiting for the follow-up of that album. Nonetheless, Rihanna’s success outside of music has given her the luxury to be as sporadic as she pleases with her musical outputs. Though the earnings that she receives from music and beauty are different, Rihanna made sure to approach the latter with the same artistic vision, intentionality, and divergent thinking that made her a star in music.
Rihanna’s brands won quickly thanks to the practice of inclusivity. Many brands in and outside the beauty industry, but especially in the beauty industry, preach inclusivity and do otherwise. In a well-publicized move, Fenty offered 40 different foundation shades to its consumers, a move unheard of in the beauty industry. The decision answered complaints from Black and brown customers who were beyond tired of not being represented by the various other brands in the industry. It also welcomed them into a world and company that accepted them for who they are and nothing less. A similar move was made in 2020 with Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Vol. 2 show. Rihanna introduced plus-sized clothing for Savage X Fenty, and for the brand’s annual fashion show, she made sure to include plus-sized men and women. They were seen in the trailer for the show, the show itself, and on the Savage X Fenty website where the products were sold. In response to this, Christopher Rosa from Glamour, who described himself as a “fat, fem gay man,” wrote, “…to see someone with stretch marks, a stomach, and pecs that aren’t “perfect” not just be represented but celebrated means more to me than I thought it would.” He later added, “I didn’t realize just how much representation could help me in that battle until now.” Though it can’t be seen and physically held like money, the value of inclusivity is undeniable, and arguably, more important.
Luxury is often placed side by side with exclusivity, a pair that is then often placed next to value and wealth. Especially in the fashion world, it often seems like there is a hefty price to pay in order to indulge in what is deemed luxurious. Despite this, we’ve recently seen that this is not always the case. Take Teflar for example, its handbags have been a hot commodity for a few years now, and though are available to purchase for everyone at a reasonable price, this inclusivity hasn’t diminished its luxury. The point is, luxury and inclusivity can be and should be synonymous and it’s a concept that Rihanna understood from the very start with her Fenty brand.
There are many ways that Rihanna redefined the role of a Black entrepreneur. Through Fenty, she emphasized that success can be attained and maintained by looking in the mirror at the world around you – that is, the world that you’ve naturally existed in for your life. Pandering to those who don’t look like you and can’t relate to you, while also neglecting the rest, will only bring you short-term success. They won’t lift you up like your own will. Rihanna also threw caution to the beauty standards that have often put down certain groups to amplify others. The Fenty experience is available to anyone who seeks to amplify their own beauty and style. Rihanna’s entrepreneurial success isn’t connected so much to investing in companies or real estate and finding wins there, instead, she proved that chasing a vision and using her status to change the status quo around her is certainly possible. In a 2017 interview with Time, Rihanna said that her “lifelong obsession” with makeup products began with “watching my mom put her makeup on.” After getting her makeup done at 15 or 16 for a pageant, Rihanna added, “Ever since then, ever since I saw foundation on my skin, I could never look at my skin without foundation again. Makeup, it spoiled me.” Nearly two decades later, Rihanna has built an empire that gives consumers from all over the world the opportunity to have that same feeling.
