Cash Cobain Calls Cap On The Rumor That He Ghostwrites For Drake

Cash Cobain is blowing up. He’s become one of the most sought-after talents in hip-hop over the last couple years. Unsurprisingly, Cobain has already linked up with Drake. The two men collaborated on the song “Calling for You,” which has become a source of controversy since its release in 2023. A reference track for “Calling for You” seemingly leaked online in April, suggesting that Cobain wrote the entire song. The rapper dismissed the reference track on social media, but a recent No Jumper interview led to him doubling down on his claim.

Cash Cobain was asked for clarity and he provided it. He claimed that the rumor of him ghostwriting for Drake is “fake news” and “cap” with no concrete proof. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he told the host. “I don’t write for nobody but me.” Cobain went on to assert that he isn’t against the concept of writing for other artists. “Why not,” he said. “Rihanna do it, Beyonce do it. All day, they got the biggest records. It’s a business.” He did, however, admit that there was a difference between writing for a pop singer or R&B star versus a rapper. “It’s just rap sh*t, you know,” he added.

Originality is something Cash Cobain prides himself on. He’s voiced admiration for artists like Jay-Z and 50 Cent the past, but made it clear that he wants to cultivate his own sound. “I didn’t want to emulate nobody,” he told Passion of the Weiss. “I love 50 Cent, Jay-Z, I loved all the artists growing up but those two were like, the main ones. [But] I didn’t want to emulate. I just wanted to make beats.” The decision to pursue a distinct sound has definitely paid off. Cash Cobain’s sound, which he describes as “sexy trap,” has spread like wildfire in 2024. He’s gotten co-signs from artists like J. Cole and Busta Rhymes, and his production style has is gradually bleeding into the mainstream.

Cash Cobain recently made the XXL Freshman list. He’s yet to link back up with Drake following the AI reference track leak, but the more successful he gets on his own, the less he needs a co-sign from the 6 God. Especially considering the all-time low that Drake’s reputation is currently at. It’ll be fascinating to see whether Cash Cobain recants his claim about writing only for himself as his profile continues to rise. Especially as more and more pop artists try to emulate his sound. If anything, Drake just got to the party early.

Kanye West’s “All Mine” Reference Track Revealed By Consequence

Reference tracks in hip-hop are a commonality. However, it feels like over the last few months, they have been running rampant. That especially been the case with Drake, not only throughout his career, but as of recently as well. The ghostwriting accusations picked up steam once again during his mostly one-sided affair with Kendrick Lamar. Additionally, because it felt like The Boy could not find a W anywhere, it seemed that the leaked ideas were popping up by the second for him. This time though, Kanye West is the artist for discussion, as a reference track for “All Mine” has just been revealed.

The rapper who appears to have assisted Ye for one of his biggest hits as of late is Consequence. A close collaborator and die-hard supporter, the Queens, New York native gave fans some context across his social media platforms. In the 45-second clip, Consequence shares vocals he recorded over the “All Mine” instrumental and it shows how Kanye threw in the hilarious Stormy Daniels line. The veteran MC did present a slightly different flow than his counterpart, but you can definitely see the similarities.

Consequence Reveals How Kanye Referenced Him For “All Mine”

Consequence was one of many to receive writing credits on “All Mine”, including Pardison Fontaine, Jeremih, Ty Dolla $ign, 070 Shake, CyHi, to name a few. He made sure to give himself props in the post, saying, “All Mine now has surpassed 500 Million Streams on @spotify… HIT MY LINE IF YOU NEED A SAMPLE ”. In addition to that plug, Consequence also announced a new collaboration coming with Kanye called “No Apologies”, which will drop on June 21. One can assume this is a song to make the cut for his relentlessly pushed back album, Nice Doing Business With You.

Drake’s Reference Track For Lil Wayne’s “I’m Single” Surfaces Online

Reference tracks have always existed in hip-hop. Few artists, however, have been associated with the concept of a reference track than Drake. He has become the poster child for this practice, much in the same way that he has for ghostwriting. It’s been a topic of debate since 2015, and it resurfaced after the Kendrick Lamar battle subsided. Reference tracks for “Ratchet Happy Birthday” and “Mob Ties” leaked online, furthering the narrative that Drake doesn’t write his own material. Another reference track has surfaced, but this time, Lil Wayne is on the receiving end.

The reference track leaked on June 6, and sees Drake lay down the basis for what would become the Lil Wayne song “I’m Single.” The reference track dates back to early 2009, when Drizzy signed to Wayne’s Young Money label. The most fascinating aspect of the the reference is not that Drake wrote it, but how much he was able to emulate Wayne’s signature flow. The Toronto upstart made it very easy for Weezy to hop on the song and make it a standout on his album I Am Not a Human Being. Drake was originally slated to be on “I’m Single” with Wayne, but it wound up being a solo effort.

Drake Was A Credited Songwriter On “I’m Single”

Between Drake’s writing credit on the final version, and the production from Noah “40” Shebib, it’s no surprise to learn that “I’m Single” started out as an OVO joint. This is not the first time that the topic of Drake writing for Lil Wayne has surfaced. Karrine Steffans told VladTV that Drake penned lots of songs for Wayne during a 2015 interview. “[Lil] Wayne told me that Drake had written some things for him,” she claimed. “I was in the studio with Wayne listening to something that Drake had written, cause [he] can’t write like that. He’ll be honest about it. He only writes a certain way.”

Steffans asserted that Lil Wayne had no problem using Drake’s song ideas. “He was very honest,” she recalled. “So Drake was just kinda showing him how to take his ideas and turn them into a story and to make that story come back around. That’s a skill. That’s a storytelling skill. Not everybody can do that.” Drizzy seemingly borrowed Wayne’s tactics as he got bigger, if the PND and Vory reference tracks are anything to go by. The “I’m Single” reference track provides a unique glimpse at the working relationship between two legends, though. One that has come back to haunt one, and leave the other unscathed.

Kendrick Lamar Goes Viral With Old Ghostwriting Comments Following Baby Keem Reference Track Debacle

Kendrick Lamar has been in the news quite a bit this year thanks to his feud with Drake. Overall, it seems as though he has come away with the win. However, the artist is being scrutinized for some of his past comments on hip-hop. For instance, fans recently dug up what he had to say about ghostwriting during a feature in Rolling Stone. As it turns out, these comments are being brought up again as a recent Kendrick Lamar reference for Baby Keem’s song “Bullies” has been making the rounds online.

“It depends on what arena you’re putting yourself in. I called myself the best rapper. I cannot call myself the best rapper if I have a ghostwriter,” Lamar noted. “If you’re saying you’re a different type of artist and you don’t really care about the art form of being the best rapper, then so be it. Make great music. But the title, it won’t be there.” While some may call out hypocrisy here, it should be noted that Baby Keem has never proclaimed to be the greatest rapper in the world.

Interestingly enough, this Kendrick reference track disproves one of Drake’s more confusing bars on “Family Matters.” He made the erroneous claim that Kendrick has only been hot when Baby Keem writes for him. It was a bar that fans called out for being cap right away. Although with this latest reference track, it feels as though Drake’s now-infamous line has been buried, once and for all.

Kendrick Lamar Reference Track For Baby Keem Allegedly Surfaces Online

There’s a lot of conversation around reference tracks these days, particularly due to some recent leaks of songs that people have apparently helped Drake in making. However, a reference track doesn’t necessarily indicate a lyrical ghostwriter, so maybe The Boy’s gotten some undue hate for his references from PARTYNEXTDOOR, Lil Yachty, and more. Regardless, there’s a lot of debate over whether borrowing cadences or taking prompted and consensual inspiration from other artists is the same as using someone else’s lyrics. Either way, the discussion gets even murkier when you try to hold folks to a double standard, as Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem allegedly proved recently through a leak that writing for others is pretty common.

Moreover, a new alleged reference track surfaced online, and it’s Kendrick Lamar’s take on Baby Keem’s 2019 track “BULLIES” off of DIE FOR MY B***H. You can hear it by clicking the “Via” link down below, and there’s no real confirmation of whether or not this is A.I., who wrote which parts, etc. But it sounds pretty legit as opposed to other allegedly debunked leaks, and you can make the judgement call for yourself, but it’s pretty interesting to see the formation of Keem’s mixtape. We also know that they’ve collaborated on a lot of tracks in the past, so this isn’t really a surprising alleged leak.

Furthermore, there have been other leaks from Kendrick Lamar recently, which resurfaced right before he responded to Drake with “Euphoria.” But these concerned more unreleased material and earlier versions of some of his own cuts, so it’s not a one-to-one comparison here. Still, folks have different goalposts for how to perceive, interpret, and critique the use of writers. Is it only relevant when you claim to be the GOAT like Drizzy or is it reprehensible no matter your fame or the nature of your song?

After all, it’s one thing to ghostwrite or give the flow for “BULLIES” and it would be another thing entirely than, say, a more lyrically dense and personal song like the “family ties” verse. While a lot of the conversation is around Drake right now, some fans need to realize this is more of a commonality than what the industry puts on. Kendrick Lamar may be the “ghostwriter” here, but no one is immune to some accusations, inspiration, and uncredited influence. Like many other elements of the rap world, it’s just a case by case basis for the most part.

DJ Akademiks Breaks His Silence On Drake’s “Mob Ties” Reference Track

DJ Akademiks is known for being a massive Drake fan. Overall, he has delivered some massive hot takes about the artist that always seems to get fans riled up. However, these hot takes are overwhelmingly positive towards Drake. Ak has noted that Drizzy is his GOAT and there is nothing anyone can do to convince him otherwise. Whether it be a litany of reference tracks or a loss to Kendrick Lamar in a rap battle, Akademiks will always have respect and admiration for the Canadian megastar.

Speaking of reference tracks, it was revealed earlier this week that Vory helped Drake write the song “Mob Ties.” In fact, Vory did the entire cadence for the hook, and it almost sounded like it was his song at first. That said, many fans have expressed disappointment in Drake, especially since the artist once revealed how much “Mob Ties” meant to him. Meanwhile, DJ Akademiks has mostly remained absent from social media since this information was divulged. Well, he recently broke his silence on stream and revealed his thoughts on the situation.

During the stream, Akademiks did note that he is disappointed with Drake. Furthermore, he revealed that Vory messaged him a while back. The message had to do with a clip of Ak claiming that there is no way Vory could have written “Mob Ties.” Vory was kind about it, but it seems like Akademiks got a warning of what was coming. That said, it does seem like much of Ak’s disappointment stems from the fact that Scorpion was Drake’s comeback record. What was he coming back from? The Pusha T beef. In Ak’s eyes, every record on that album should have come Drake, and the fact that he had significant help, it a betrayal of sorts.

Drake is in the news this morning and it has nothing to do with his beef with Kendrick Lamar. Instead, he is currently being talked about thanks to the reference track that leaked last night. Overall, the reference track in question was for the song “Mob Ties” off of his 2018 album Scorpion. The artist on the reference track is none other than Vory, who can be heard on multiple songs on Donda. As you can imagine, this new reference track has caused a bit of an uproar, with fans calling this a huge issue for Drake’s legacy.

Throughout the day, fans have been debating the overall use of reference tracks and whether or not it is a bad thing. However, it seems as though there is another issue when it comes to “Mob Ties” specifically. In the clip below, you can see an old episode of The Shop in which Drake spoke about Scorpion to Maverick Carter and LeBron James. In this clip, he talks about how the Pusha T beef re-energized him to make music. It was here where he subsequently goes on to say that “Mob Ties” was one of his favorite tracks from the album.

DJ Akademiks is easily one of the biggest hip-hop commentators in the world. Overall, he is known for growing a platform on YouTube. However, over the last couple of years, he has mostly abandoned the YouTube video grind. Instead, he mostly just streams and uses Twitter as a place to vent. Regardless, this has proven to be quite lucrative for him. His streams are immensely popular and whenever there is a big story in the culture, fans flock to his Rumble, Twitch, and Kick pages.

Last night, Akademiks was being talked about in a negative light due to his past comments about Vory. To set the scene, a Vory reference track for Drake’s song “Mob Ties” hit the internet. This subsequently led to massive debates about Drake’s pen and his overall legacy. Moreover, it led to one person digging up an old clip of Akademiks scoffing at the idea of Vory writing any bars on “Mob Ties.” In the clip below, you can see that Akademiks was on stream with some friends and that they were reading the credits on Scorpion. Ak acknowledged that Vory was credited as a writer, however, he made the bold claim that the artist didn’t write a single thing.

In fact, Twitter likes to call Drake stans “Aubrey’s Angels,” which is pretty hilarious. Either way, fans now want to know what Akademiks thinks of the situation, especially since a reference track is officially in the ether.

However, it was eventually revealed that Drizzy was mostly using writers for hooks on his poppier tracks. When it came to his timestamp records, those bars were from Drake and Drake only. Well, amid his beef with Kendrick Lamar, the ghostwriting allegations have reappeared and they have fans questioning what they once knew to be true.

It all started when a Lil Yachty reference track for “Jumbrotron Shit Poppin” hit the internet. The entire song was performed by Yachty, which had fans calling Drake lazy. Last night, things got worse for Drake as a Vory reference track for “Mob Ties” hit the internet. This reference track was everywhere on Twitter, and fans were shocked that one of Drake’s best tracks was performed by someone else. Not to mention, this song appears on “Scorpion,” an album that was released right after the Pusha T debacle.

Vory’s Alleged Reference Track For Drake’s “Mob Ties” Leaks Online

Drake’s had a controversial history with reference tracks. The 2015 reference track for “10 Bands” was what sparked the rumor that the rapper used ghostwriters, and he has struggled to live them down ever since. Kendrick Lamar mentioned ghostwriters during his recent battle with Drake, and every couple of months, it seems as though another reference track for a Drake song makes its way online. The latest is “Mob Ties,” which was a single on his 2018 double album, Scorpion.

“Mob Ties” has multiple credited songwriters. Drake is one of them, then Allen Ritter and Boi-1da, both of whom produce the song. The Firm and the Trackmasters are also credited, which makes sense given that “Mob Ties” samples the 1996 Nas single “Affirmative Action.” Vory is the only one songwriter who isn’t part of OVO or the artists who made “Affirmative Action.” His involvement in “Mob Ties” was never made clear, but if the leaked reference is to be believed, Vory wrote the bulk of the song. The version he did has a very similar structure, and only a few differences in terms of lyrics.

To be clear, this is not a ghostwriting situation. Vory is credited on the final version of “Mob Ties,” just like he is on Bryson Tiller’s 2015 single “Don’t.” Vory also pops up all over Kanye West’s 2021 album Donda. The artist is a frequent behind-the-scenes presence for some of the biggest names in rap. The notion of him penning a song for Drizzy is, consequently, not a surprise.

Vory’s involvement with “Mob Ties” has been debated in the past. DJ Akademiks claimed Vory didn’t have any involvement with the song during a Twitch stream, only to look it up and realize he was wrong. “[Vory] is credited,” he asserted. “But he ain’t write nothing.” This reference track upends DJ Akademiks’ theory outright. That being said, Vory has not yet verified that the reference is real.

A reference track for Drake’s 2023 song “Calling for You” was leaked online, only for the artist credited on the reference track, Cash Cobain, to refute it. The rapper/producer hopped on Instagram to post an image of Allen Iverson. In other words, the reference was as fake as Iverson’s famous fake pass move. AI-generated content is making it harder than ever to determine what’s real. Ironic, given Drake’s own use of AI for his “Taylor Made Freestyle.”
