Drake & Lil Yachty Reference Track Situation Leads To Heated Legacy Debate

Drake is someone who has had to deal with ghostwriting discourse for the last decade. Overall, this is all because of Meek Mill, who exposed him for using writers on If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Of course, this is a big no-no in hip-hop. MCs take a lot of pride in their bars, and finding out that the megastar had some help made some people turn on him. Or, at least, it had people contemplating whether or not Drake had a GOAT case. However, in recent years, fans have come to terms with the fact that even the best rappers have writers who will help them with hooks and melodies, here and there.

Amid his feud with Kendrick Lamar, a reference track from Lil Yachty began surfacing online yesterday. This reference track was for the song “Jumbotron Shit Poppin” off of Her Loss. Essentially, Yachty did the entire track, and Drake just sang it word for word, with the same melody. Although Drake has written for countless artists, including Kanye West, fans still felt like this was some sort of betrayal. While ghostwriters help, fans felt it was weird that Drizzy was just taking an entire song and not changing it up whatsoever.

Drake Debates Rage On

Once again, this isn’t necessarily uncommon. Regardless, it still led to a huge legacy debate. On The Neighborhood Talk, you can see a plethora of tweets from fans who are split on what the reference track truly means. Some think it is totally normal and that Drizzy is still one of the greats. Meanwhile, others believe this completely disqualifies him from further GOAT discussions. It is a tired debate, albeit one that will continue to draw attention for quite some time.

Drake Reference Track From Lil Yachty Surfaces, DJ Akademiks Thinks Metro Boomin Leaked It

The Metro Boomin and Drake beef, which obviously has a lot of other moving parts, got an interesting development to kick this week off. Moreover, following the online spread of an alleged reference track that Lil Yachty made for Drizzy’s “Jumbotron S**t Poppin,” folks like DJ Akademiks and more claimed that Metro was the one to leak this. This is because a couple of people claimed to receive the .mp3 file via a random Atlanta number, and because the current feud narrative makes it hard to see this in any other context. But at the end of the day, there are a few reasons as to why this is not only nothing new, but downright meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

First off, it’s really impossible to know whether or not Metro Boomin was actually the person to send this leak out. If you’re basing it off of who’s in Atlanta, Drake is such a dominant and unstoppable artist that there are probably people in every city that would want to see his downfall. That’s not even to mention the other players in this beef who are outside of the A who might be going to extra lengths to cover their tracks. Still, this is all purely speculative and worthless at the end of the day, especially considering how prolific and numerous leakers have been in this Internet age.

Metro Boomin Allegedly Leaks Drake Reference Track From Lil Yachty: Listen

Second, if this really was Metro Boomin and he wanted to leak this reference track from Lil Yachty to Drake to make the OVO mogul look bad… so? Who cares? The Let’s Start Here. creative is literally credited as a producer and a writer on not just this specific Her Loss (2022) cut, but multiple. Reference tracks only hurt when their clients don’t credit their creators. In fact, folks tried to accuse Kendrick Lamar of this over the weekend, and since then, there has been much more scrutiny as multiple factors seemed to debunk it.

Kendrick Lamar is probably the biggest and most important name in this beef alongside Drake, and things are still quiet on the pgLang front after “Like That”… for now. But if the St. Louis producer or anyone else was actually trying to get at the 6ix God for this, better luck next time. Not all reference tracks are created equal. Kendrick Lamar Accused Of Using Ghostwriter Amid Drake Beef, Reference Track Surfaces

As his war with Drake just escalated in a massive way today (Saturday, April 13) thanks to an alleged leaked diss track from Aubrey, Kendrick Lamar now has another big headline to worry about. Moreover, a Twitter user by the name of @certifiedjared and various other social media pages claimed that he used a ghostwriter on the track “N95” off of his 2022 album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. The presumed ghostwriter in question is CJ Francis IV, and a demo also surfaced that’s supposedly from 2019 in which you can hear Francis use the flow and some of the lyrics that the Compton rapper included in his song. Jared and many others pointed out that Francis is not officially credited on “N95.”

However, at press time, this all remains mostly speculative, and both Kendrick Lamar Stans and regular rap fans had a few counter-arguments or questions. First is their claim that “N95” had already leaked in 2019, so the veracity of this claim is more in question than folks assume. Still, either argument for it isn’t really air-tight, and thus this is still part of the rumor mill. But one of the most interesting aspects of this whole debate is how CJ Francis IV is a Quentin Miller associate, the Drake ghostwriter whose name places a heavy cloud over “Prince” and “Mike Jack’s” conflict.

Kendrick Lamar Hit With Ghostwriting Accusations: See Replies For Debate

While this is one accusation of ghostwriting against Kendrick Lamar, Drake has encountered many of these throughout his career, and was still able to overcome them. Having writers is by no means a bad thing… if they’re credited… but even if not, it’s too common of an industry trope to single out any one criminal. If it wasn’t for this current beef, maybe this wouldn’t have really drawn the fanfare that it’s getting on some Internet corners right now.
