Quincy Jones has passed away at the age of 91. According to his publicist, Arnold Robinson, the music and entertainment icon died Sunday night at his Bel-Air home surrounded by his family.

“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing,” a statement from the family said. “And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”

Jones infused his genius into jazz, pop, film, and television, leaving an indelible mark on modern music and culture. Born in Chicago on March 14, 1933, Quincy Delight Jones Jr. rose from modest beginnings to become one of the most prolific and respected producers, composers, and arrangers in music history. As a young man, Jones attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston but left early to pursue his dreams. He began his career as a jazz trumpeter, working with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, before transitioning into arranging and conducting, which would become his true calling.

Jones was instrumental in crafting the sounds of numerous artists and producing some of the most influential albums of the 20th century. His work with Michael Jackson remains legendary, especially their collaborations on Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), and Bad (1987), albums that redefined pop music and made Jackson a global superstar. His groundbreaking arrangements and compositions earned him 28 Grammy Awards from 80 nominations, making him one of the most decorated artists in Grammy history.

Jones was also a pioneering advocate for social change, using his platform to support civil rights and champion diversity in the entertainment industry. His influence transcended music; he was a mentor, a cultural ambassador, and a visionary who brought together artists from all walks of life. In 1993, he was awarded the Grammy Legend Award, a fitting tribute to his status as one of the most transformative figures in music.

Rashida Jones, the daughter of Grammy Award winning producer Quincy Jones, says that her and her family had an up-and-down relationship with the late Tupac Shakur, but still considers him family.

In an interview with the New Yorker, which was published over the weekend(July 7), the actress recalled the open letter she wrote to ‘Pac in The Source following some disparaging remarks that Shakur made about the famed musician/producer.

“All he does is stick his dick in white bitches and make fucked up kids,” Pac said of Rashida’s father at the time.

“I do think that anyone who reads this article would be shocked by his ignorance and lack of respect for his people,” she said.  “To demean a man like Quincy Jones, a man who came from the ghetto of Chicago and through his talent and perseverance became a living music legend, demeans the whole progress of African Americans.”

She continued, “Where the hell would you be if Black people like him hadn’t paved the way for you to even have the opportunity to express yourself? I don’t see you fighting for you race. In my Opinion, you’re destroying it and shitting all over your people.”

30 years later, Rashida reflected on the letter she wrote, which was shortly before her older sister Kidada began dating Tupac.

Furious! So precocious, so self-righteous. Yeah, I was so mad,” she said. “It was a new perspective to me. I kind of understand the nuance more now that I’m older. It just felt like a completely unwarranted attack. It resolved itself really nicely, because when I met him, he immediately apologized to me, immediately apologized to my dad. We sat down and had a really good conversation about it, and then he was family.”

Will Smith Admits He Hated Quincy Jones’ Original “Fresh Prince” Theme

Quincy Jones saw something in Will Smith. The legendary producer knew talent when he saw it, and he knew Smith had what it took to be a crossover sensation. He was right. He cast Smith as the star of the classic sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and the rest is history. The show ran for six seasons, and the actor went on to become one of the biggest stars in the world. Smith has always spoke highly of Quincy Jones and the influence he had, but he recently admitted that he disagreed with the producer on one major detail. Smith hated the original theme song to his own show.

The revelation came about during Smith’s appearance on Hot 97. The actor was promoting his new film, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and he reflected on his star-making TV role. He claimed he was in awe of Quincy Jones, especially given his pedigree. “He was mentoring me,” Smith stated. “Quincy had done a theme song for Fresh Prince. And you know, Quincy did Sanford and Son; Quincy did a 1,000 things that you don’t even know.” Everything was great, until Smith listened to the theme song Jones had in mind. “So Quincy plays a theme song for The Fresh Prince,” he noted. “It was that old school… So I listened and I was like, ‘Ohhh… wow…. yeah.’” The future superstar was worried.

Will Smith Made An Alternate Theme That Quincy Loved

Smith’s solution was to turn to his musical partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff. “Jeff was at the hotel and I was like, ‘Jeff, Quincy played a theme song. Dude, it’s no good at all,’” he told Hot 97. “Jeff was like, ‘Just tell him, man, he’ll understand.’ I was like, ‘There ain’t no way I’m telling Quincy Jones […] I can’t do it, man. Quincy knows better than I know.’” Smith’s fear was understandable, given that Jones was helping him get his foot in the door. DJ Jazzy Jeff then solved the problem by making a new beat for Smith to rap over. The duo made the song in one evening, and decided to show it to Jones as an alternative.

It was a stressful first listen. “So I played it for Quincy and he sat there and listened and I’m shaking and sweating,” Smith explained. “And he said, ‘Well, that’s better than that bullshit I did.’ … We did a whole record [with] a second verse, so Quincy made the edit and that became the theme song.” Smith’s gut proved correct, as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song went on to become one of the most iconic themes of all time. It was even included on the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince greatest hits album.

SZA & Quincy Jones Lead Tommy Hilfiger’s 2023 Fall Campaign With Style & Grace

Tommy Hilfiger’s 2023 Fall Campaign has a few famous stars as its faces, namely Stray Kids, the legendary Quincy Jones, and SZA. Moreover, they recently unveiled some new items in their collection, and this second installment of the season has a particular focus. If you didn’t already grasp it by the list of collaborators involved, it’s all about how these two worlds come together. The fashion brand often works with musicians to tell a larger story for both, and has resulted in some iconic and meaningful team-ups. It’s this history, respect, and acclaim that the TDE singer referred to in a press release of the photo campaign.

“I’m so inspired by the creative icons that have come before me and the foundation that they’ve laid,” SZA stated. While this is far from the St. Louis native’s first fashion crossover, it’s certainly one of her biggest, especially within the context of this particular campaign. “I’m excited and honored to build my legacy as a creative alongside a brand as established and influential as Tommy Hilfiger. It’s been a great experience with the brand and so special to share with my close family and friends.”

On the other hand, this might surprise you, but the iconic music producer actually goes way back with Tommy Hilfiger. Kidada, Quincy Jones’ daughter, was part of the Tommy Jeans launch in the 1990s and she styled Aaliyah’s famous bandeau top fit for Hilfiger in Vibe magazine (which he founded) back in 1997. Referring back to this campaign, it’s clear that this family focus is still a big component. 21 of Jones’ family members appear in the promotions, whereas SZA’s family and friends also contributed to them.

“I believe in the power of music to shape and guide us, and that creativity is a vital part of who we are as human beings,” the 90-year-old stated. “It’s a philosophy I share with my family and one I hope to pass on to the next generation. Tommy [Hilfiger] and I first met in the ‘90s during a revolutionary time in music. We came from different worlds, but we immediately connected as two optimistic, and hardworking dreamers with a shared vision to combine music and fashion in a way that had not been done before.” For more news and the latest updates on SZA and Quincy Jones, keep checking in with HNHH.
