Jay-Z Clarifies The ‘Water To A Whale’ Line From His 2001 Cut ‘U Don’t Know’

Following Arby’s and Pusha T’s scathing diss track toward McDonald’s Filet O’ Fish sandwich, fans are questioning a line from Jay-Z’s Blueprint cut “U Don’t Know.” On “Spicy Fish Diss Track,” Push proclaims, “I could sell water to a whale,” directly referencing “U Don’t Know.” Although the song’s lyric video confirms Push says “whale,” the clip has left fans asking if Jay originally says “I’m a hustler baby, I sell water to a whale,” or “sell water to a well.”

Hip-hop journalist Sowmya Krishnamurthy reached out to Just Blaze, who produced “U Don’t Know,” for clarification. Blaze asked Jay, who kept it open to interpretation, saying it could be either “well” or “whale.”

“Haaaa!!!! Well/whale,” said Jay, by way of a text message from Blaze. “It’s never a coincidence when these things happen. I try to make things work on multiple levels every time I sit down to create. It keeps me engaged.”

Push and Arby’s diss track follows the “Diet Coke” rapper’s claims that he wrote McDonald’s iconic “I’m Lovin’ It” jingle, alongside his brother and fellow Clipse member No Malice, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams. Push was apparently paid a one-time fee for his contributions and has not been paid any royalties for the almost two decades McDonald’s has been using the jingle.

“I did it at a very young age at a very young time in my career where I wasn’t asking for as much money and ownership,” Push told Rolling Stone. “It’s something that’s always dug at me later in life like, ‘Dammit, I was a part of this and I should have more stake.’ It was like half a million or a million dollars for me and my brother — but that’s peanuts for as long as that’s been running.”

Pusha T Teams Up With Arbys For McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish Diss Track

Between “Exodus 23:1” and “The Story Of Adidon,” it should be clear to MC’s everywhere that the last person you want smoke with is Pusha T. Now you might be able to add fast-food restaurants to that list as well.

Yesterday, March 21, the fast-food chain Arbys unveiled their new spicy fish sandwich. Their ad for their new sandwich featured a Pusha T diss track directed towards Mcdonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwich.

“I’m the reason the whole world love it, now I got to crush it/ filet-o-fish is *** and you should be disgusted” Pusha raps, alluding to how he wrote Mcdonald’s “I’m lovin it” jingle nearly two decades ago. Push has gone on to say how he was paid “peanuts” for coming up with Mcdonald’s most successful campaign.

“I did it at a very young age at a very young time in my career where I wasn’t asking for as much money and ownership,” Push said to Rolling Stone in a statement about the new Arbys ad. “It’s something that’s always dug at me later in life like, ‘Dammit, I was a part of this and I should have more stake.’ It was like half a million or a million dollars for me and my brother — but that’s peanuts for as long as that’s been running. I had to get that energy off me, and this [ad] was the perfect way to get that energy like, ‘You know what? I’m over it.’”

Upon release, many took to social media to voice their opinion on the ad and give Push his flowers for being able to infuse his “coke raps” in a fish sandwich ad.

Pusha T’s New Arby’s Jingle Ruthlessly Disses McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish

Pusha T is no stranger to to the fast food jingle scene. News surfaced in 2016 that he was behind McDonald’s ubiquitous “I’m Lovin’ It!” song which first appeared in 2003. Now, nearly two decades later, King Push — who recently dropped the track “Diet Coke” with Kanye West — has come over to the dark side, so to speak, and has just penned the new “Spicy Diss Fish Track” for Arby’s.

The track touts the superiority of Arby’s Spicy Fish sandwich to that of McDonald’s time-honored Filet-O-Fish as Pusha T ruthlessly dismantles the Mickey D’s sandwich, which first debuted in 1962. “I’m the reason the whole world love it, now I gotta crush it. Filet-O-Fish is sh*t and you should be disgusted,” he raps in the song’s opening bars. He spends much of the track ripping apart the square shaped McDonald’s sandwich and bodies Ronald McDonald in the process. “A little cube of fish from a clown is basic,” he adds, punctuating a verse.

The rapper took to twitter to announce his new…er…collab, saying, “Just dropped a diss track with @Arbys. Grab some popcorn and a Spicy Fish Sandwich. #ArbysSpicyFishDissTrack #ArbysPaidMeButIWouldSayThisAnyway”

On the track, which rides a battle rap beat not too far removed from something out of El-P’s early production library, Push somehow manages to get his sly cocaine rap references past the censors. As the track comes to a close and a ship sinks into the water in the video (symbolizing the demise of the now 60 year old McDonald’s sandwich), Push gets back to his roots and delivers the coke rap death punch, “If you know me and you know me well, our fish is gonna tip that scale!”
