Doja Cat’s ‘Vegas,’ A New Song She Debuted At Coachella, Will Officially Arrive Next Month

New Doja Cat music is on the way: Ahead of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biographical film Elvis, which hits theaters June 24, Doja will release a new single called “Vegas” for the film’s companion album.

“Vegas,” which arrives next month, contains interpolations of “Hound Dog,” a song originally by Big Mama Thornton, and (in)famously covered by Presley. Snippets of the song have revealed that “Vegas” contains vocal samples of Thornton’s original version of “Hound Dog.” Actress Shonka Dukureh will portray Thornton in the film.

The Elvis companion album will arrive sometime this summer via RCA, which has been home to Presley’s catalog since the ’50s. RCA has not yet confirmed an exact release date for the article, nor have they detailed if the album will be a soundtrack, a score, or strictly a compilation of Presley covers, the label did reveal to Variety that “the album will include variations on Presley material that include contributions from a number of name artists representing different genres.”

Doja first performed “Vegas” in full during her set at Coachella, sparking up anticipation for new music. Also during her set, she announced that Taco Bell, of which she is a business partner, will bring back the fan-favorite Mexican pizza.

Angel Olsen Covered Harry Styles Yet-To-Be-Released Song ‘Boyfriends’

Just last week Harry Styles debuted not one but two new songs during his Friday night Coachella set. Both “Boyfriends” and “Late Night Talking” are likely singles off his upcoming album, Harry’s House, but for now, “Boyfriends” is definitely the crowd favorite. So much so that indie rocker Angel Olsen has done her own cover of the track, though it hasn’t even been officially released yet. Gearing up to release a new album of her own, Big Time, on June 3, Olsen uploaded her spare rendition of Harry’s tune to her TikTok channel.

“This new Harry song is a beauty (debuted at Coachella) #harrystyles #bigtime #fyp,” Olsen captioned the video.

Here’s a snippet of the Harry version:

Does this mean a slew of “Boyfriends” covers will be unleashed in the coming days and weeks? Too soon to tell, but if there’s one thing this man seems to understand, it’s just how frustrating men can be. For his set during last night’s second weekend, Harry brought out Lizzo to do some One Direction classics, which is probably not comparable to the iconic appearance of Shania during the first weekend, but at least he mixed it up so fans got something different.

Harry Styles Brought Out Lizzo As A Surprise Guest For His Headlining Set At Coachella

Harry Styles’ stardom has been on full display at Coachella this year. During the festival’s first weekend, the former One Direction singer performed his chart-topping singleAs It Was” for the first time and also debuted two new songs, “Boyfriends” and “Late Night Talking.” These tracks are set to appear on his upcoming third album Harry’s House. He also brought out Shania Twain to perform “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” during his set. For the second weekend of Coachella’s festival, Harry brought out another awesome guest during his headlining set to close out the night.

At the end of Friday night, Harry brought out Lizzo for a pair of performances. The singers, who have been friends for years, took the stage together to perform Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.” Lizzo teased her appearance at Coachella earlier in the day in a TikTok, writing, “I’m bored otw to Coachella.” Afterward, she took a moment to show gratitude to Harry in an Instagram post. “Proud of you @harrystyles,” she wrote. “Thank u for having me.”

Lizzo and Harry’s performance together comes as they prepare to release new albums to the world. Harry’s third album Harry’s House will arrive on May 20 while Lizzo’s next body of work Special will drop on July 15.

Karol G Drops Her First Single Of The Year In The Sun-Soaked ‘Provenza’

At this week’s Latin American Music Awards, Karol G was the big winner of the night. The Colombian urbano pop singer took home six awards, including Artist Of The Year and Album Of The Year, for the vibey and celebratory KG0516. The “El Makinon” singer was also on stage at Coachella last weekend, highlighting a slate of female Latinx artists like Anitta, Nicki Nicole, and Nathy Peluso, who left an indelible marked on the 2022 festival.

Now Karol G has just dropped her first single of the year in the sun-soaked “Provenza,” and it’s an escapist song that gives rise to joyous feelings of wanderlust and passion. In fact, the video directed by Pedro Artola was captured in the exotic, volcanic landscape of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Over a rhythmic, breezy beat with idyllic effects by producer Ovy On The Drums, Karol sings: “No se si te convenza, nos damo un rocesito por provenza. Y si la cosa se pone tensa en mi cama, es la recompensa. O viseversa. Porque lo piensas?” (“I don’t know if you’re convinced? We can give ourselves a touch of province. And if things get tense, there’s a reward in my bed. Or vice versa. What do you think?”)

Ed Sheeran And Lil Baby Go Overseas To Show Off Their ‘2Step’ In Their Cheery New Video

Towards the end of last year, Ed Sheeran arrived with his fifth album =. The project was his first full-length release since 2019’s No. 6 Collaborations Project, and with =, Sheeran successfully secured his fifth straight No. 1 album. Unlike most of his past albums, = was an entirely solo release which might have come as a disappointment to some who hoped to hear Sheeran work with some of his peers. Thankfully, has been Sheeran making up for that with his past releases including his latest one.

Nearly six months after he dropped =, Sheeran returns with Lil Baby beside him for a remix of “2Step.” On it, Lil Baby arrives for the song’s second half and provides a verse that compliments Sheeran’s warm invitation to dance to a significant other. The remix also arrives with a music video, which Sheeran revealed was shot in Ukraine through a message at that video’s start. He noted that the visual was done before Russia invaded Ukraine, but moved by a stay in which he “felt so welcomed,” Sheeran revealed that he would donate “record royalties from YouTube streams of the video to DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.”

The remix of “2Step” arrives after Sheeran released an updated take of “The Joker And The Queen” with Taylor Swift. Elsewhere, he also collaborated with Camila Cabello for “Bam Bam” and J Balvin for a pair of songs, “Sigue” and “Forever My Love.”

You can check out the remix to “2Step” in the video above.

Janelle Monáe Comes Out As Non-Binary: ‘I Just Don’t See Myself As A Woman, Solely’

In 2020, it looked like Janelle Monáe had come out as non-binary after tweeting “#IAmNonBinary.” They later clarified in an interview, though, “I tweeted the #IAmNonbinary hashtag in support of Nonbinary Day and to bring more awareness to the community. I retweeted the Steven Universe meme, ‘Are you a boy or a girl? I’m an experience,’ because it resonated with me, especially as someone who has pushed boundaries of gender since the beginning of my career. I feel my feminine energy, my masculine energy, and energy I can’t even explain.”

However, now, Monáe has gone ahead and declared as directly as possible that they are in fact non-binary: In a new Red Table Talk interview (as Billboard notes), Monáe told Jada Pinkett Smith, “I’m non-binary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she,’ and if I am from God, I am everything.”

Monáe continued, “I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women, but I just see everything that I am, beyond the binary.”

Monáe also discussed why they decided to come out now, saying, “Somebody said, ‘If you don’t work out the things that you need to work out first before sharing it with the world, then you’re going to be working it out with the world.’ That’s what I didn’t want to do.”

Dove Cameron Turned Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ Into A Shivery, Seductive Ballad

Wow, it sounds like 2022 is going to be the year of Dove Cameron. After she burst out of the gate back in February with the dramatic queer anthem “Boyfriend” and its accompanying steamy video, now the emerging pop star is back with a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance for the books. Opting to cover Lil Nas X’s inescapable pop hit, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” she starts the song off incredibly slow and shivery, taking it more into the realm of seductive ballad than rap-adjacent banger.

But, by the time she’s done with the first low and slow verse, Cameron brings the energy up a bit, backed by her drummer and guitarist, who have no problem turning up the heat. Dove performs the whole song seated on a stool, but her vocal chops are impressive enough that she keep the energy high and the attention focused on her even when she’s starting off slow. Check out the performance up top and keep an ear out for another new single from the young musician coming soon.

A few weeks ago, she teased the song “Breakfast” on TikTok, and it’s already close to four million streams. And based on the string of emojis in the pre-save link, “Breakfast” will likely be the next thing we hear from her, that is, unless she’s got some more incredible cover songs up her sleeve. Speaking of, if you want to catch a live version of “Boyfriend” check it out below.

The Best Albums You May Have Missed From Winter 2022

We pride ourselves in covering a lot of ground daily here at Uproxx, always looking to highlight the best music releases in hip-hop, indie, pop, and more. But there are a lot of tunes out there in the world that sometimes get past the radar when they first get released. So this piece is dedicated to making sure that some of those gems don’t go unnoticed. These are the best albums that you might have missed that were released from early December through the end of March.

Atalhos – A Tentação do Fracasso

It doesn’t take long to get swept into the Brazilian band’s psychedelic dream pop on their debut album. The jangly guitar riff on opening song “Tierra Del Fuego” is super sweet and it sets the stage for an album filled with them. The album’s title itself is a phrase in Portuguese that means “the temptation of failure” and it’s this kind of carefree poetry that typifies the unique lyricism of songwriter Gabriel Soares and Atalhos. From the title track to “Mesmo Coração,” their fuzzy São Paulo grooves are nostalgic like Real Estate and committed to varying guitar sounds like Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. There are moments of Spanish along with the album’s primarily Portuguese singing — plus a touch of saxophone — resulting in eight tracks that will be living on repeat all year.

Nia Archives – Forbidden Feelingz

The debut EP from London producer and singer Nia Archives will hit you like a freight train. Mostly because her blend of jungle and garage beats with soul-packed vocals is laid down like silky steel. Think back to what you felt when you first heard PinkPantheress, ’cause this is right there with it, but with a more direct lean towards the dance floor. You wanna make a mean bass face when the thick, chunky beat hits on “Luv Like,” but then open your eyes wide open and blissfully tip your head back when Nia’s heavenly vocals come in. There are old-school dancehall ragga jungle vibes throughout and the only downfall is that the EP only has six tracks. But they all bang.

Maggie Gently – Peppermint

Previously the lead singer of erstwhile San Francisco queer pop-punk band The Total Bettys, Peppermint is Maggie Gently’s debut solo album. Her upbeat indie-pop tunes are akin to acts like Clairo and Rosie Tucker, and these are very much songs about anxiety, love, identity, and finding personal growth while balancing your mental health. “I can’t put it into words why I’m so worried,” she sings over a lively guitar lick on “Worried.” “Hold My Hand” has a melody that sounds right of the solid gold ’90s in the best way possible and this is an album indie fans shouldn’t let slip through the cracks.

Gabriels – Bloodline

The first time I heard Jacob Lusk’s vocals on “Blame” I was floored. There’s an inherent elegance to his velvet baritone and perhaps I thought he was British at first. Turns out Lusk is a Compton native who grew up singing in a gospel choir, appeared on the 10th season of American Idol, and has sung with artists ranging from Diana Ross to Nate Dogg. Gabriels is the emerging trio of Lusk and Hollywood-minded multi-instrumentalists Ari Balouzian and Ryan Hope. On the LA retro-soul and R&B group’s second EP, Lusk is sublime over cinematic production, proving Gabriels to be a growing force.

Widowspeak – The Jacket

Signed to the influential Captured Tracks label, Brooklyn duo Widowspeak’s latest album is a glorious blend of shoegaze and cowboy pop. Singer Molly Hamilton evokes shades of Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval and together with Robert Earl Thomas, they use fuzzy guitars in the shotgun seat of a very chilled-out collection of songs. “Everything Is Simple” is propped up by Hamilton’s mesmerizing coo while twangy guitars and soothing keys round out an arresting tune. This is music tailor-made for a relaxed lamplit evening, or a sunny afternoon on a porch with a rickety swing for kicks.

Lil Yee – Unbreakable

San Francisco street rap is having a resurgence and rappers like Lil Yee are at the forefront of the movement. Now on his third album, Unbreakable is Yee’s ode to succeeding in life, while remaining loyal to friends, family, and the soil. There are a ton of seriously epic slaps on this album. “Free The Home Team” is a bonafide Bay Area hip-hop anthem featuring fellow SFer Lil Pete. “Come From” is a humble nod to his Fillmore District upbringing and being grateful for the life he’s leading, while “ChiAli” is an impassioned call to the ghost of his dead uncle. There are guests on the album like Detroit’s Babyface Ray and Berkeley’s Rexx Life Raj, but it’s Yee and lines like “Why’d I come that far to throw it all away?” that represent the hustle that’s unique to the Bay Area street rap grind.

Combo Chimbita – Ire

One of the most bombastic Latinx music groups, Combo Chimbita is forged in the mystical lore and revolutionary spirit of singer Carolina Oliveros’ native Colombia. The Brooklyn-based group fuze traditional rhythms with boundary-pushing instrumentation, making Ire one of the most powerful albums out this year. “Mujer Jaguar” is a contorting number with twisty strings, pulsing bass, and Afro-Caribbean drums surrounding Oliveros’ banshee howl. “Memoria” has a straight-up electro-lounge beat while “Babalawo,” with a trap-rock groove, dance music sensibility, and lyrics channeling Santeria, might very well be their defining jam. Guitarist Nino Lento Es Fuego summed up the latter in a statement, saying that, “These intimate moments of spiritual guidance are incredibly important to us as a band with decolonial aspirations.”

Soul Glo – Diaspora Problems

A hardcore and screamo punk band at their core, Philadelphia band Soul Glo do everything loud. But Diaspora Problems is a gut punch that sounds like a rapper making a hardcore album. Singer Pierce Jordan is incredibly verbose, packing in extensive diatribes on each of the album’s twelve tracks. On “Jump!! (Or Get Jumped!!!)((by the future))” he sings, “Living on Juice Wrld, Pop Smoke time. I’ll be in my future, come try to remove it, I live only for this, it’s how I must do it. There’s no way they can take what I say and skew it.” In a genre dominated by mostly white artists, Soul Glo — with three Black members out of four — offer a perspective in punk that is underrepresented and is hopefully here to shape the future of it.
