After a narrow miss in the fourth quarter of Game 4, the Mavericks bounced back decisively in Game 5, taking control early and never relinquishing the lead to secure a 104-92 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The victory puts Dallas in a commanding position as they head into Game 6.
Luka Doncic was the standout performer, delivering a stellar 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists, marking his third 30-point triple-double in playoff history. This achievement ties him with LeBron James for the second-most such games by a player aged 25 or younger, with only Oscar Robertson (seven) having more. In addition to his impressive stats, Doncic made a crucial block on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the final minute, sealing the win for Dallas. Derrick Jones Jr. also shone, scoring a playoff career-high 19 points, thanks in part to five assists from Doncic, including two three-pointers, two alley-oops, and a dunk.
The Mavericksā defensive prowess was on full display as they held the Thunder to below 100 points for the first time in this series. Dallas limited OKC to 42.5% shooting (25% from three) and restricted them to just 10 free throw attempts. The Mavs are now 13-0 this season, including 4-0 in the playoffs, when holding opponents under 100 points.
Despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexanderās valiant effort, posting his fourth consecutive 30+ point game with 30 points, eight assists, and two steals, he was the only Thunder player to score more than 13 points. SGA joins Russell Westbrook as the only players in OKC playoff history with at least four straight 30+ point games in a single postseason.
The series resumes on Saturday (8 PM ET, ESPN) in Dallas for Game 6, where the Mavericks will aim to close out the series at home. The young Thunder face their first elimination game, hoping to extend their playoff run.
Earlier this week, Josh Giddey was accused of having a sexual relationship with a minor. Overall, these are very harsh allegations that have the potential to ruin his career. Ultimately, fans were shocked and disappointed by what they were hearing. However, there has been no confirmation other than some videos that portray Giddey next to a young woman. Many are claiming that the woman in question is a Junior in high school which makes her either 16 or 17. Furthermore, it has been alleged that she was 15 at the time of the encounter.
Once again, these are allegations and nothing has been confirmed. However, Twitter has already decided that Giddey is guilty. Of course, many have wondered what the NBA would do given the allegations. One would assume that the league would take action. Or perhaps the Thunder would release some kind of statement. Well, that hasnāt happened. However, today at Thunder practice, Giddey was in front of reporters, where he was asked directly about the allegations.
āI understand the question obviously, but thereās no further comment right now,ā Giddey said. Needless to say, he was probably told by a PR person to not say anything. After all, he is in a pretty bad situation right now. Both his career and his life are at stake. However, he is still at practice, and that feels a bit surprising right now. Only time will tell whether or not the team takes any further action. As soon as he gets onto the court, it is going to be very bizarre out there. The boos and the chirps from other players will be palpable.
Let us know your thoughts on this situation, in the comments section below. Should the NBA take action or leave it alone for law enforcement to deal with? Kevin Durant is starting to fit in with his new teammates in Phoenix. The former NBA MVP is ramping up for another deep playoff run. Except for this time, he will be back in the Western Conference. This past Sunday, Durant returned to his home away from home. Oklahoma City is where the former Texas Longhorn grew up in the NBA. His professional career was born in Seattle. However, the franchise relocating to Oklahoma City gave Durant a place to cut his teeth among the stars.
Everyone knows the story by now. Durant left his home with the Thunder for greener pastures in Golden State the summer before the 2016-17 season. The move was a crushing blow to the Thunder franchise. As many fans believed the team was a yearly title contender with Durant on the roster. Leaving the place that gave you your start can be difficult. Fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers have watched their hometown king leave them twice. For Thunder fans, theyāve never forgotten Durantās goodbye and let him know about it.
Kevin Durant Understands Thunder Fans Frustrations
Kevin Durant understands the reasoning behind the boo birds in OKC. When a community loses its star player, it can be a gut punch. The organization has to start over when such a significant loss happens. After Durantās departure, the organization said goodbye to Westbrook shortly after. Westbrook and Durant are still the most synonymous names in the history of the Thunder organization. However, the franchise only has one Western Conference title to show for it.
The Thunder were a team of potential. For so many years, many wondered would it be the year for OKC. A team that once had three league MVPs on their roster ended up with zero championships. Thunder fans have the right to be hurt over Durantās exit. However, the future looks bright in Oklahoma City. The franchise basically owns the next few drafts. In the process of rebuilding, the team has found a star in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. As well as hoping injured rookie Chet Holmgren pans out as another monster draft pick. While the future looks bright, sometimes, itās hard to forget the past. Do you think itās time for Thunder fans to move on from the Durant hate? Let us know in the comment section below. For the latest NBA news, stick right here with us at HNHH.
The Oklahoma City Thunderās first-round draft pick Chet Holmgren may have suffered an injury in a Seattle pro-am game this past Saturday. According to ESPNās Adrian Wojnarowski, Holmgren was injured while guarding LeBron James during the CrawsOver event.
āChet is in the process of undergoing evaluation and when we have an update, we will communicate,ā a spokesman said to Woj.
Additional NBA stars in the game were Jayson Tatum, Paolo Banchero, DeJounte Murray, and Aaron Gordon. The game was canceled in the second quarter due to wet spots on the floor and condensation.
A few highlights from the game are available below.
Leading up to the NBA Draft, it was believed the Orlando Magic would use the No. 1 pick to pick Jabari Smith Jr. from Auburn. Instead, they swerved the basketball world and selected Paolo Banchero of Duke.
The No. 2 pick, going to the Oklahoma City Thunder, was Gonzaga Center Chet Holmgren, and Smith Jr. would fall to the Houston Rockets at no. 3.
āI had a feeling, from the information I was being told, that it was just kind of up in the air,ā Banchero said to ESPN. āOrlando wasnāt really sure yet, and just to be ready for whatever.
āI didnāt find out, though, that I was actually getting picked until about 20 seconds before the commissioner got on the stage. I didnāt even have time to really think about it or anything. It just kind of happened. I canāt believe it, but Iām ready. Iām ready.ā
During his final season at Duke, Banchero averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. He now joins a young core that features Jalen Suggs, Cole Anthony, Franz Wagner, and Wendell Carter Jr. All players, except Carter Jr., were drafted by the Magic.
To round out the top five, The Sacramento Kings drafted Keegan Murray, and Detroit added Purdue guard Jaden Ivey to their young core.
There were plenty of Draft Night trades. The New York Knicks sent Kemba Walker to the Detroit Pistons, who are expected to buy the guard out. The Philadelphia 76ers traded Danny Green and the No. 23 pick to the Memphis Grizzlies for DeāAnthony Melton.
Only thirteen NBA players have had their number retired from multiple teams. Kevin Durant believes he should be number fourteen.
In an interview withĀ The Ringer, the 12-time All-Star said he thinks his jersey should be retired in Oklahoma City and San Francisco.Ā
āOKC has to retire my jersey,ā Durant said. āIt wouldnāt even be good for the game of basketball if they didnāt. The same with Golden State. Iām still doing what Iām doing here in Brooklyn, but if I continue on what Iām doing four or five years, then Iāll feel the same way about this program. I better have a home. Because I feel like I am basketball. I breathe it. This is my DNA. I put in the time and respect and love for each one of these programs on and off the floor to get that type of recognition. If I donāt do it, then itās personal.ā
Durant is an all-time great talent on the court. He is entitled to have his opinion and could be on to something here. The Golden State Warriors have already gone on record stating they will eventually retire his number. The Oklahoma City Thunder havenāt gone on records about retiring Durantās number but should consider it. Durant won his first league MVP while with the Thunder. He helped lead the team to its last NBA Finals appearance in 2012. Will the Thunder eventually retire Durantās number? Who knows, but the case for doing it is a solid one.
Drake is a notorious presence courtside at NBA games. While often in Toronto, the part owner of the Raptors often also shows up to big games outside of The Six. But last night, he was slumming it, so to speak, at the Oklahoma City Thunder versus Houston Rockets game in OKC. Folks were understandably perplexed as to why Drizzy would show up to see two cellar-dwellers play early in the season, but he was presumably there to show love to fellow Toronto native Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder. SGA heeded the call and the point guard dropped a cool 39 points in front of the rapper, albeit in a loss. But the big story of this game was the cute older couple that was sitting courtside next to Drake and had no idea who he was.
In a hilarious exchange during a break in play, the arena jumbotron cameras seemed to pan over to Drake. When the couple sitting next to him noticed that they were in the outskirts of the frame on the giant video board, hilarity ensued.
The gentleman taps Drake (who was playing it cool for the camera) on the shoulder and says āHey man!ā to get his attention and his wife leans over and jokingly tells Drake to āSmile!ā for the camera. The three break out in laughter and the affable Drake tells the man that the cameras were for him. They shared a laugh and then Rumble, the Thunderās mascot, came over to shake Drakeās hand. Drake later posted a selfie with the couple on his Instagram story with the caption āMy new parents.ā Ignorance really is bliss sometimes.
The logical reason for Drake to be at this game is probably to support Thunder guard and Toronto native Shai-Gilgeous Alexander (and Lu Dort, who is also a Canadian on OKCās squad). But why this specific game to do so? At some point, Gilgeous-Alexander will be back in Toronto playing with the Thunder. And this isnāt even a good opponent to see the Thunder play against. No offense to the Rockets, but they are among the worst teams in the league (although now riding a 4-game winning streak) and donāt even have their top pick (Jalen Green) available right now due to injury.
Frankly, getting to the bottom of why Drake is at Thunder-Rockets on a Wednesday night in December is worthy of some kind of investigation. He was in Toronto as recently as two days ago, but perhaps heās just really into Josh Giddeyās passes (or maybe his TikTok) or loves Alperen ÅengĆ¼nās flair as a center in addition to wanting to support his countrymen. Itās so random that it deserves a random explanation, one that many on Twitter were searching for.
Why is drake at a thunder game against the rockets in December on a Wednesday night
Drake also made friends with an older couple he was sitting next to in his courtside seat, posting to his Instagram story that they are his ānew parents.ā
It turned out to be a pretty good game, with Houston winning 114-110 thanks to a big fourth quarter comeback, so maybe Drake is smarter than us all, a savvy shopper for what had to have been some relatively cheap courtside seats to take in a pretty entertaining game.
