Nicki Minaj Touches Down In Trinidad To Celebrate Carnival

The Queen of Rap exuberantly landed in her motherland yesterday (February 19th). In celebration of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, Nicki Minaj returns to her roots to perform this week in her home country. She revealed her arrival on Instagram recently, with a story captioned, “They said the Queen of rap just touch down in she home country. Allyuh hear dah or wah!?”

Ahead of her forthcoming performance, the 40-year-old recently made an appearance on Machel Montano x Destra’s “Shake the Place (Remix).” Both Trinidadian artists are largely known for their contributions to Soca music (often related to the Calypso genre). Alluding to their cultural roots, “Shake the Place” creates an anthem for the Carnival, pulling from Soca’s energetic and dance-inspired beats.

Nicki Minaj Announces Her Arrival in Trinidad

Minaj was born in Saint James in 1982 but later moved to Queens, NY in her early childhood. Although the majority of her life has been spent in America, the “Super Freaky Girl” rapper continues to pay homage to her birthplace. She raps on “Shake the Place,” “Trinidad my country, the greatest carnival of all time. I’m reppin’ that red, that white, that black, I’m reppin’ my real flag.” This year won’t be Minaj’s first appearance at the Carnival, with her last being in 2020 (although she didn’t perform).

In light of Minaj’s return home, Twitter users excitedly posted about their anticipation for her upcoming performance. Fans are especially looking forward to this year’s costume, as she turned heads during her last appearance in her sexy and intricate blue and purple feather number. In reference to the Queen’s arrival video, one user wrote, “From another angle, a fan telling her she loves her and she tells him she loves him back. Hope we get to see Nicki Minaj in a costume for the carnival.”

Nicki Minaj Spotted In Trinidad And Tobago Ahead Of The Country’s Annual Carnival Celebration

Nicki Minaj may rep hard for Southside Jamaica Queens, New York, but the “Super Freaky Girl” rapper’s first home was the Caribbean country of Trinidad And Tobago. The record-holding recording artist shares her home country pride every chance she gets in her international music collaborations, most recently being on the 2022 FIFA World Cup anthem “Tukoh Taka” featuring Maluma and Myriam Fares.

However, her pride for her native island hasn’t stopped there, as the musician was spotted arriving at the country’s international airport today.

It would make perfect sense that Minaj would be visiting the country considering yesterday (February 19), the songwriter took to Instagram to share that she had collaborated with Trinidadian soca singer Machel Montano and musician Destra Garcia for a new song titled “Shake The Place,” just in time for the country’s annual Carvinal celebrations.

“If you f*ck with island girls, rep your flag for me in the comments. Trinidad Carnival is about to #ShakeThePlace shake up di whole place. It’s an honor @machelmontano @destragarcia. We’ll talk soon, barbz. Promise. Love you,” wrote Minaj.

Well, this isn’t the first time the superstar has visited the country to celebrate Carnival; it still does hold a special significance as this would be the first time she’s collaborated with Trinidadian musicians. It is unclear if she will perform as part of the country’s special celebrations, but that would be quite a treat for her fellow Trinidadians.

Nicki Minaj Drops Her First Verse Of 2023 On “Shake The Place (Remix)” With Machel Montano & Destra

Nicki Minaj made an undeniably impressive comeback in 2022. She started the year with two coveted Lil Baby collabs – “Do We Have A Problem?” and “Bussin,” and went on to give us impressive efforts alongside guests like Coi Leray and Fivio Foreign. Later on, she dropped her biggest hit in some time, “Super Freaky Girl,” which found her channelling her inner Rick James.

In recent months, things have been relatively quiet on the mother of one’s front musically. There have been occasional updates about her forthcoming album. Still, we didn’t receive Minaj’s first verse of 2023 until Friday (February 17). Earlier this weekend, she joined Machel Montano and Destra on the upbeat remix of their “Shake the Place” single.

Throughout her lyrics, the foreign rhymer shows huge love for her Trinidadian roots. “I’m gettin’ a real bag (Kyuh), I get to them real bad / They know they can’t compete with Trini girls, they goin’ out real sad,” she markedly spits on the song’s second verse. For now, it’s available exclusively on YouTube. However, a recent post on Minaj’s Instagram makes us think that will soon change.

On Saturday (February 18) afternoon, the 40-year-old teased an accompanying music video for her “Shake the Place (Remix).” It finds her finally putting her curvaceous figure and dance moves on full display, much to fans’ pleasure. In the caption of her teaser, Minaj wrote, “If you f$&@ with ISLAND GIRLS rep your flag for me in the comments.”

“Trinidad CARNIVAL is about to #ShakeThePlace shake up di whole place. It’s an honour @machelmontano @destragarcia.” She also left a message specifically for the Barbz, promising them that she’ll be back to talk soon and sending her followers love.

Stream Machel Montano and Destra’s “Shake the Place (Remix)” featuring Nicki Minaj exclusively on YouTube below. Afterward, tell us who else you hope to see the Queen of Rap collaborate with later in 2023 in the comments. Additionally, find more release recommendations on our weekly Fire Emoji update here.

Quotable Lyrics:

I’m gettin’ a real bag (Kyuh), I get to them real bad (Brr)
They know they can’t compete with Trini girls, they goin’ out real sad
That bumper got ever bigger (Oh), so now he not even with her
I wanted a beer, I don’t mean a hug, I want to see a Guinness sticker

Nicki Minaj Breaks Her Social Media Silence To Congratulate Rihanna On Her Pregnancy And The Super Bowl

The Navy and the Barbs are equally as anxious for new music from their respective queens. It’s been almost five years since Nicki Minaj put out a full-length album, and over seven years for Rihanna. While we trust that the two will deliver quality this year, both stars are enjoying motherhood to their sons.

Nicki Minaj hasn’t posted to Twitter since November, and posted to Instagram today (February 18) for the first time since November to share the remix of Machel Montano and Destra’s “Shake The Place,” on which she delivers verses shouting out her Trinidad roots.

While making an appearance on the gram, she took time to shout out Rihanna and congratulate her for her second pregnancy, as well as her Super Bowl halftime performance.

Minaj sent her benedictions by way of a comment on Rihanna’s Instagram post, where she shared her British Vogue spread featuring her partner ASAP Rocky, and their son.

“A lil pretty boy already,” said Minaj. “Congratulations on the new bundle of, joy, Queen. Bodied the Super Bowl.”

Minaj and Rihanna have collaborated quite a few times in their careers, notably on “Fly” from Minaj’s Pink Friday album and “Raining Men” on Rihanna’s Loud album. Perhaps a new collab is in order for their respective new eras.

Remy Ma Avoids Question About Latto & Nicki Minaj Beefing Over Grammys

When Latto and Nicki Minaj were firing off tweets to one another, Remy Ma was a spectator like the rest of us. The rapper knows all too well what it is like beefing with the Queens star. These days, she’s putting that past tension behind her. Their animosity began sometime in the mid-2000s, and some believe it all stemmed from lyrics about who was the true “queen of Rap.” Whatever the case, things quickly unraveled, and Remy unleashed “ShEther,” a diss track that stunned Hip Hop.

Nicki and Remy are mothers and wives pushing forward in their careers. Although neither brings up their past rift, the “Lean Back” hitmaker often faces questions. This occurred more recently during her chat with The Jason Lee Show, where the host wanted to pick Remy’s brain.

Lee mentioned that Minaj and Latto’s fallout began over whether or not the Grammys would classify the legend’s song as Rap. Remy was asked if it mattered, and she told Lee he would have to ask one of the ladies involved. However, she did mention her nominations, stating that she lost out to The Black Eyed Peas and, later, Chance The Rapper. Remy also noted Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and (finally) Nas have Grammys, so The Recording Academy may be shifting.

Additionally, she said “it’s a voting system” that isn’t necessarily based on numbers or a more defined structure. “Once you get nominated, you’re a part of the committee. You can vote, but a lot of times, it seems like whoever is signed to the label with the most people that are on the board, that’s who usually wins. You’re obviously gonna vote for your artists.”

50 Cent Said He Won’t Pick Sides Between Cardi B And Nicki Minaj But Went All-In On One Anyway

The feud between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj has cooled off since their open conflict in 2018, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. Now, it’s more of a Cold War, as we saw last year when they renewed hostilities mainly through proxies like Akbar V and JT after Nicki apparently demanded a blood oath in exchange for a slot on the “Super Freaky Girl (Queen Mix).”

Likewise, most observers have remained cautiously neutral (although that hasn’t exactly been a winning strategy either). There is, however, one exception: 50 Cent, the king of controversy himself. Never one to shy away from a hot take or a chance to stir the pot, 50 weighed in on the feud between the two in a new interview with Billboard celebrating the 20th anniversary of his debut album.

At first, he feigns reluctance to choose a side, saying, “Hip-hop culture makes you battle. I love Nicki Minaj, but the funny sh*t is, I like watching her when she’s upset… When Cardi B came, I thought she was dope… When her and Nicki clash, I go, ‘Oh, sh*t, it’s going to be interesting to watch how it plays out.’ Lyrically, I won’t say anything competitively about the two of them.”

It didn’t take him long to throw in with his fellow Queens native, though, admitting, “… I love Nicki. I don’t have anything against Cardi. I think anyone who comes now, she is going to check their temperature. Nicki is going to check if this b*tch is friendly or looking to take over the sh*t.”

Nicki certainly does that, although in more recent years, she’s mellowed out to the point of working with Coi Leray, Doja Cat, and the Queen Mix crew. However, it doesn’t look like she’s revising her longstanding policy anytime soon, and for some — especially those who, like 50, relish the battle side of hip-hop — that’s just fine.
