Foggieraw Soundtracks A Sweet Romance On “Love Don’t Cost A Thing”

Foggieraw’s style is hard to describe. It’s smooth and awkward at the same time. He consistently chooses elegant R&B production and laid back hip hop beats to vibe over. He does so, however, with a flow that often sounds rambling, and improvisational. There’s a sense of unpredictability with Foggieraw that makes each one of his releases exciting to parse over. “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” is no exception. The song allows Foggieraw to bring his borderline spoken word approach to a song that evokes the smooth soul classics of yesteryear.

“Love Don’t Cost a Thing” has a guitar groove and a chorus that sounds plucked out of the late 90s. Foggieraw’s singing voice is assured and soaring, while the verses, delivered in the artist’s signature style, register as shy and earnest. It provides a compelling musical tension, especially when the verses transition to the chorus and back. The whole song is underpinned by finger snaps and breakbeat that gives the rest of the instruments on top of it texture. Foggieraw hasn’t tinkered with his formula so much as refined it. We look forward to the album that accompanies “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.”

Paris Texas Slowly Peel Back The Layers On Personal Single “Rokkout”

Paris Texas, experimental rap rock duo from L.A. are back solo for the first time this year with “RokKOut.” Throughout the first 10, almost 11 months, Felix and Louie Pastel have been playing the feature role for Haich Ber Na, Bien et Toi, and Kenny Mason. However, they are ready to reintroduce themselves for those who may have forgotten about them. They really broke through last year with their MID AIR album, as fans were extremely high on it. “RokKOut” could be the start of the next album rollout, but that remains to be seen for now.

At the beginning of this near four-minute cut, Felix and Louie keep the mood pretty casual and braggadocious. In typical Texas fashion, the instrumental is anything but normal as there’s a funky synth loop and quirky background vocals added in for good measure. However, things get steadily more personal and introspective after the second verse. Louie raps about severe levels of addiction run in his family, as well as his issues with his father and the insecurities he harbors. Felix wraps things up with a similarly heavy dose of painful bars about his late dad and how he wasn’t around for his final breaths. He blames himself mercilessly for it and it still weighs on him to this day. It’s progressive, emotional, and hard-hitting and we think it’s one of the best releases so far this week.

Quotable Lyrics:

And what I got, to show for it is every drop of pain
I hope my pops, his blood wash over me like DMX
To this day I still regret not being there for his last breathe

To be my biggest fan and balance somewhat-pseudo fame

Lil Uzi Vert Kicks Off New Era With “Uzi The Earthling! (The TV Theme)”

Lil Uzi Vert has one of the most fervent fanbases in hip hop. Their constant experimentation, and willingness to try different sounds, has resulted in widespread anticipation for what they will do next. Well, the first teaser of Lil Uzi Vert’s new era is here, and it’s now what you expect. We’re not kidding. The rapper is nowhere to be heard on the song “Uzi the Earthling! (The TV Theme).” The song itself is only thirty seconds, and features no rapping of any kind.

Instead, “Uzi the Earthling!” serves as a theme song introduction to a fictional show. Lil Uzi Vert has decided to really set the tone for what’s to come by dropping a jingle that sounds ripped out of the 1960s. A woman sings about the titular earthling, and how they bring joy to everyone they see. It’s something no other rapper has attempted. It’s the sort of thing a rapper would typically sample, or incorporate as a sample, but Uzi plays it straight here. A bold choice, and one that has us extremely excited for the album to come.

Ferg Responds To The Non-Believers On “Thought I Was Dead”

Though he has not released an album in some time, Ferg has kept busy with singles and features. The former A$AP Mob member is seemingly on a mission to prove that he can still be a viable artist on his own, and “Thought I Was Dead” is a direct response to his detractors. The track, co-produced by Lex Luger, Mike WiLL Made-It, and a handful of other names, is a banger. It sounds like something straight out of the mid-2010s, with a big bass and energetic 808s. Ferg flows over the production with a similar energy.

Ferg is lyrically on point as well, delivering brash and boastful lines in a way that fans have come to expect from Harlem rappers. He takes aim at his haters, talks about losing friends, and even takes a moment to call on Sony to begin renegotiating his record deal. The second verse is completely flex-laden, with the bulk of his criticism going to “broke” people before talking about his grind to get to where he is today. Ferg’s last single, the Future-assisted “Allure,” briefly made headlines after fans theorized that Future was taking some subtle digs at Gunna. “Thought I Was Dead” has no such controversial lines, but it is still worth your time. No album has been announced yet, but based on Ferg’s increased output, it is probably not too far away. Stream the new single below.

T Ferg done had yay on a boat

Gunna Continues His Run With New Single “Him All Along”

Gunna’s had a productive 2024. In May, he released One of Wun, his fifth studio album. He’s been featured on a litany of projects, most notably the track “Jump” from pop and amapiano star Tyla’s self-titled debut. Now, he is back with another single. Frequent collaborator Turbo produced “HIM ALL ALONG.” The beat is more mid-tempo and relaxed, which is in line with Gunna’s other releases this year. However, the bass turns the track into something that’s still ready for the car.

Lyrically, the track has a lot in common with the content found on One of Wun. The bars are self-motivational, talking about chasing his goals and putting his team on. It would not be a Gunna track without some flexing, so naturally, there’s some light flexing taking place. He talks about his imported foreign car and selling out both Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden. After the run he’s had, he has certainly earned the right to flex. At the end of the music video for One of Wun standout “today i did good,” an Easter egg implied the existence of a deluxe album. It has not come to fruition, but this track could be the teaser for a new collection of songs on the way. Until that gets announced, stream “HIM ALL ALONG” now.

Smash all you itty-bitty rappers in a minute, I was tryna prolong (Tryna prolong)
On the way to reachin’ my goals, lot of doors open and close (Open and close)
I’ve been spendin’ millions on clothes, I been makin’ millions off clothes (Millions off clothes)

Coco Jones And Future Make A Killer Pair On “Most Beautiful Design”

Coco Jones has a classic R&B sound. So many of her peers are experimenting with trap and indie, and melding different genres together. Jones, on the other hand, is content to make excellent R&B songs that sound ripped from two decades ago. She’s proved it on nearly all of her singles, and does it again on this new one. “Most Beautiful Design” is Coco Jones’ anticipated collab with Future and London on da Track, and it sounds as exquisite as its title suggests. Jones and Future have impressive vocal chemistry, and they glide over London’s smooth instrumental.

Future actually takes lead on the song, which is unexpected. The rapper keeps his 2024 hot streak going with a vocal melody that snaps into place over the beat. Future ditched the softer side of his persona for the recent MIXTAPE PLUTO, so it’s impressive to hear him dig back into this bag so effortlessly. London on da Track does his thing here, with an instrumental that is consistent and catchy. Nothing too bold, but a nice underpinning for the vocal fireworks. This is especially true when Coco Jones gets on. She proves herself Future’s equal, and despite having two very different deliveries, these two sound great together on record.

Ab-Soul Enlists JasonMartin And Thirsty P For Thumping “All That” Single

Ab-Soul is not playing around. The rapper earned some of the best reviews of his career for this 2022 comeback album Herbert, and he’s running it back. Soul Burger is going to drop in November, and the rapper is not playing around when it comes to the promo singles. “Squeeze 1st 2” was a smooth and jazzy showcase for the rapper’s lyrical dense skillset. “All That,” the rapper’s second offering, is a hard hitting switch-up. Ab-Soul taps fellow California emcees JasonMartin and Thirsty P for a slick offering that proves he’s far from a one trick pony.

Ab-Soul has been derided by some fans for being too heady with his music. “All That” proves that Soul Burger will not run into this problem. The instrumental is simple, snappy, and helps to anchor his tricky wordplay and turns of phrase. He flips the title of the song to refer to the classic Nickelodeon show All That and cast members Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. JasonMartin and Thirsty P do their thing on the back end of the song. It’s fun to hear Ab-Soul branch out and work with different artists outside of the TDE camp. We can’t wait to hear how this newfound versatility translates to a full album.

Drake Tries A New Style On The Chino Pacas Single “Modo Capone”

Drake has done the Spanish language thing before. He’s collaborated with Romeo Santos and Bad Bunny over the years, but Chino Pacas represents a different sound entirely. The Toronto rapper has hinted at a collab with Pacas for over a year, and now “Modo Capone” is finally here. Spoiler alert, it’s a banger. The combination of Pacas’ signature Corrido sound and Drake’s vocals is not something we would have ever thought worked, but it does and then some. Drizzy manages to find a pocket within “Modo Capone” with Pacas and Fuerza Regida.

The guitar work does a lot of the heavy lifting out the gate. Chino Pacas is the first artist to take center stage vocally, and he’s obviously in his element. Drake is the real story here. He sings an entire verse in Spanish for the first time since 2018. He sounds a little strained at first, particularly as he reaches into his higher register, but it smooths out as he goes along. Drake finds a better pocket during his second and third verse, as he gets to work in English phrases. He also gets to croon over the extremely catchy break at the end of the song. Hip hop drums kick in, and the outro takes on a very OVO-esque sound.

Majid Jordan Provides Immaculate Vibes On “Life 2”

Majid Jordan is a r&b/pop duo that has been a huge driver of the infamous Toronto sound. Overall, their association with Drake has certainly helped them, although they have managed to stand on their own two feet over the last decade. The group has been extremely consistent when it comes to new releases, and fans are always eager to hear what they have in store, whether that be an EP, and album, or just a new single to tease whatever they’ve got going on. Today, the group offered up a new song, simply called “Life 2.”

This song contains the immaculate vibes you would come to expect from a Majid Jordan track. The synths sound incredible and the drums are uplifting. Meanwhile, the singing is buttery smooth and sounds perfect over the 80s-inspired production. This is one of those tracks that immediately puts you into a good mood, especially with the Fall weather officially here in full swing. Young Buck Sounds Reinvigorated On New Single “Don’t Ask Me”

Young Buck isn’t young anymore. The former G-Unit member has been through a lot since he first broke onto the scene in the early 2000s. He’s seen tremendous commercial highs and dire financial lows, like a bankruptcy filing in 2010. Young Buck is back with a new single, however, and it proves that he has put all this experience to good use. The rapper sounds authoritative and aggressive on the song, proving that he still has what it takes to deliver the goods in 2024. “Don’t Ask Me” is Buck’s best single in years.

The instrumental definitely helps. Young Buck is not stuck in the production of the past, and instead taps DJ Paul KOM for a chilly, nocturnal sound bed. “Don’t Ask Me” sounds like its contending with the ghosts of the past as Young Buck does the same lyrically. He makes reference to his complicated past with 50 Cent and G-Unit. He also makes reference to the recent beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Young Buck has been keeping tabs on the rap game, but he doesn’t sound out of step. Instead, Buck sounds confident with where he’s at. He knows he can still rattle off memorable bars. The chorus isn’t anything crazy, but it’s easy to repeat and keeps the viewer anchored to the beat. A winner.
