ASAP Rocky is a talented performer. He rose to fame as a rapper, of course, but he has excelled in numerous mediums. He’s become a renowned fashion model courtesy of collabs with Calvin Klein and PUMA. Now, ASAP Rocky is going to take the plunge into acting. He’s dabbled in film before, but the upcoming crime drama Highest 2 Lowest will represent a huge step forward. Rocky, born Rakim Meyers, will play the lead in a new Spike Lee joint.

Highest 2 Lowest was announced in February 2024. The buzz surrounding the film stemmed from the reunion between director Spike Lee and actor Denzel Washington. The duo are responsible for several classics dating back to the 1990s, and they haven’t worked together in two decades. The assumption was that Washington was going to play the lead, but a new report from Billboard proves this to be untrue. Instead, ASAP Rocky will be taking center stage. “The main role … is ASAP Rocky,” Lee said during the 2024 Red Sea International Film Festival. “People will see when it comes out. It’s dynamite.”

ASAP Rocky Has Been Acting Since 2015

Oscar-winning director Spike Lee, a Freedom Award honoree, answers questions on the red carpet ahead of the National Civil Rights Museum’s 33rd Freedom Award ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024 in front of the Halloran Centre in Memphis, Tenn.

ASAP Rocky’s charisma has proven to be effective on the big screen. He made his feature film debut in Dope (2015), before turning in scene-stealing performances in Zoolander 2 (2016) and Monster (2018). Highest 2 Lowest will represent a huge leap in terms of collaborators and prestige. Rocky is also slated to appear in the upcoming dramedy If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. The A24 release will be produced by the Safdie brothers, proving that Rocky’s transition to movie star is in full effect.

Day one Rocky fans know there is a consequence to this new career path. The rapper has been teasing the release of his new album, Don’t Be Dumb, for years. He promised it would drop in 2024, and even released pre-order links. Unfortunately, ASAP Rocky confirmed that the album would be delayed, yet again, to 2025. Pre-order links were subsequently refunded. Don’t Be Dumb has yet to get a proper release date, despite. ASAP Rocky having dropped three well-received singles. The announcement coinciding with news of his role in Highest 2 Lowest does not feel like a coincidence. His mind is on seemingly everything but the music. On the bright side, Highest 2 Lowest sounds like it’ll be great.

Big Sean Extends His Thanks To Tyler Perry For Highlighting His Grandmother’s Story

Big Sean and Tyler Perry found an unexpected but heartening connection via the latter’s upcoming film The Six Triple Eight, which plays in select theaters starting Friday (December 6) before streaming on Netflix starting December 20. On Tuesday (December 3), the Detroit rapper attended a screening for the movie alongside his mother, and spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his vested interest in it. Moreover, he and his mom held a picture of their grandmother and he thanked the director and media mogul for telling the story she’s a part of. For those unaware, The Six Triple Eight tells the story of the Charity Adams-led 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a predominantly Black unit of the U.S. Women’s Army Corps at the end of World War II.

Big Sean’s grandmother was one of 855 non-white women who served in this unit. “Just the impact, I’m just so, so thankful. I told Tyler Perry, when I talked to him, how thankful I was because it’s kind of such an overlooked, crucial piece of American history and Black history,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “The Six Triple Eight [6888] battalion connected millions and millions – over, like, 17 million pieces of mail – where there was no other means of communication to families and information and just loved ones.

“They were fighting their own war being, you know, strong Black women during segregation and fighting for their country,” Big Sean continued. “So I’m just proud of them. Not just my grandmother, proud of all of them. I was so happy to be raised by such strong Black women that are, like, embedded in my DNA and I’m forever grateful for it. And It’s a super emotional night. My grandma was incredible, and I’m sure all of these women [were].”

Meanwhile, Big Sean has more big things on the way, and it looks like the “It Is What It Is” MC is really enjoying his recent moves and experiences. As for Tyler Perry, we will see how this film lands with audiences, although from Sean’s words, it sounds like an inspiring holiday flick. Ice Cube Alleges Hollywood Shut Down His Script For A New “Friday” Movie

Ice Cube is not only one of the most influential rappers of all time, but one of the art form and culture’s most extracurricularly decorated exponents. He’s led basketball leagues and starred in a lot of visual media, one of his most famous being the classic 1995 comedy Friday alongside Chris Tucker. It got two sequels in 2000 and 2002 respectively, but it seems like Hollywood higher-ups felt that the weekend was over. The Los Angeles MC went on Cam Newton’s Funky Friday podcast to reveal that studio executives shut down his script for another installment, although the timeline is unclear.

“Like, I know what it needs to be, and they don’t,” Ice Cube remarked to Cam Newton. “So, they had a guy in there named Toby Emmerich for years, and he wouldn’t make the movie. I was trying to get it made. I wrote a script, they said it was…” Then, Cube explained his idea for the script, and revealed that he wanted to get Chris Tucker back. “They was like, ‘Ah, jail’s not funny. It’s too much time in jail. How can you make jail funny?’ I’m like, ‘Man, y’all don’t know what the f**k y’all talking about.’ Then they come out with Orange Is The New Black, Let’s Go To Prison, all these movies about that. And I’m like, ‘See? More Hollywood execs don’t know what the f**k they’re talking.’”

After that comment, Cam Newton asked why Ice Cube didn’t seek the help of another film company or filmmaker to get this new Friday movie out. “It’s not that simple,” he replied. “We did the movie through New Line, and they attached to all the sequels. Has to come out through New Line. I was trying to take the movie to another studio.” So it looks like the West Coast icon wasn’t able to fulfill his mission, but maybe he gains the public leverage to convince New Line for good.

Meanwhile, Ice Cube just released his new album Man Down, and to hear him return to the rap space is something special. Hopefully, one day, he can get back to this franchise.

Yes, if you weren’t familiar, he’s been in a couple of projects since 2023, according to his IMDb page. They are pretty obscure projects and the roles are minor. But it seems he’s trying to pick up a new skill which is highly commendable. This film looks to have some more backing than others, as according to eventbrite, it had a premiere over the weekend.

Charleston White The Next Major Movie Star?

It took place on Saturday, November 16 at the Angelika Film Center & Café in Dallas, Texas. The title of the movie is Wrong Address and it was released by A Bigger Picture. It also stars Nykol Harris, Alex Stein, and Jayceon Marshall. There isn’t much on the plot of it, but based on the short clip above, it looks to be some sort of crime/dramedy of sorts. Speaking of that clip, it’s garnering people’s attention on social media for how Charleston White portrays his character.

That is to say it’s basically himself and to no one’s surprise, he kills it. He’s being interrogated by the police and he’s shouting profanities and acting out, which is how he normally is on the internet. People seem to be loving it, with one X (Twitter) user writing, “🤣🤣 I need to check this out.” Another jokes, “He could play a big role in the next Friday movie😂😂” According to his Instagram, there looks to have been another private showing on November 17 in Mississippi, but information on where to watch is unavailable.

Frank Ocean To Write New Movie & Direct It For A24

Frank Ocean is taking his talents to film while fans patiently wait for new music. According to a Discussing Films exclusive, the 37-year-old award-winning singer will write and direct his debut feature film with popular studio A24. The rumored film is untitled, and information about it is vague, but it is reported that Waves actress Taylor Russell is in talks to star in it. A24 is known for its trendsetting films, like Talk to Me (2023), Uncut Gems (2019), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).

Fans can review Frank Ocean’s film experience with his 2016 effort Endless, which he wrote and directed himself. The visual album was Ocean’s second album and final with Def Jam Recordings. The directing debut will expand on Ocean and A24’s relationship after he wrote a screenplay book for the 2016 film Moonlight, which won “Best Picture” at the Oscars. Frank also wrote two songs for the studio’s Waves in “Godspeed” and “Seigfried.”

Will Frank’s Film Come With A Soundtrack?

Ocean is the latest OFWGKTA alum to join the film industry and the second to partner with A24, following last month’s announcement that Tyler, The Creator, will make his film debut with the studio in 2025. Tyler is set to star alongside Timothee Chalamet (Dune) in the upcoming film Marty Supreme. Many believe Tyler spoke the role into existence, referencing Timothee on the 2018 track “OKRA.” There is no word if Tyler will appear in Ocean’s potential feature film, but both are aligned with A24. Lionel Boyce, known as Odd Future’s L-Boy, stars in the award-winning television series The Bear. New Frank Ocean music has been hinted at throughout 2024 by the artist’s collaborators.

Ocean’s mother mentioned new music in October while celebrating his birthday. She mentioned Ocean working hard in an Instagram photo, captioned: “It’s your birthday! And you are working hard as usual but I’m gonna drag you out for cake one way or another!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY GORGEOUS SONshine.” Before the film news, fans questioned if Frank Ocean appeared on his friend Tyler, The Creator’s new album, CHROMAKOPIA. Earlier this week, the Florida-born rapper took to Instagram to share a trailer for the upcoming film Gone Missin, which he executive produced. The supernatural horror flick is directed by Vincent Escobar for KTB Media and does not yet have an official release date. It centers around a woman who visits a small town in search of a missing person. Of course, she ends up discovering far more than she bargained for.

Kodak Black Teases Gone Missin

While this is the first time Kodak’s worked as an executive producer on a film, it’s not the only time he’s dabbled in the world of cinema. Last year, he appeared in The Don, a short film in which he plays a crime boss. It coincided with the release of his album Pistolz & Pearlz, which was unveiled on the same day. Movies aren’t the only thing keeping Kodak occupied these days either. He’s also been on a recovery journey as of late, embracing his new mostly sober self and looking back on how far he’s come.

During an Instagram Live last month, for example, he revealed that he’s taken some steps in the right direction and can now go several days without using any substances. The Trailer Premiere

The two-minute trailer premiered exclusively in IMAX theaters on Thursday night after Donald Glover, in his Instagram post earlier that day, teased the trailer drop. The brief clip shows Glover’s character, Bando Stone, joining forces with other survivors in a perilous journey through a world filled with giant, blood-thirsty creatures and electromagnetic traps. The trailer, not yet officially released online, has snippets captured by fans circulating on social media, adding to the anticipation.

However, the trailer’s debut didn’t mean that Donald Glover and his team chose to share it online. So far, only the few fans who watched the movie in theaters caught a glimpse of the preview. Nonetheless, fan-captured footage surfaced online this morning, per HipHopDX, which you could view above.

Bando Stone & The New World is produced by RCA Records and Gilga, Glover’s creative hub. The film stars Jessica Allain, known for her roles in horror thrillers like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Fear. The storyline focuses on Bando Stone, a musician trying to survive in a world overrun by extraterrestrial threats, whose sole skill is singing. Late last year, Jonathan Majors was found guilty of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. Regardless, the actor doesn’t look to be letting his conviction get in the way of his career. Recently, it was revealed that he’ll be starring in an upcoming supernatural thriller film, which will be his first role following his highly publicized trial.

Reportedly, he’s been cast as a CIA investigator who begins to struggle with mental health issues as his love interest is targeted by mysterious forces. The film, titled Merciless, does not yet have an official release date. It’s not been attached to a major studio yet either. It’s being directed by Martin Villeneuve, however, the younger sibling of Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve.

Sound of Freedom‘s Christopher Tuffin will produce the upcoming indie film. He reportedly plans to share more details of the project at the Toronto International Film Festival later this year. Filming is expected to begin this fall, so it’s not looking like it’ll arrive anytime soon. Other cast members have also yet to be announced. Majors’ conviction is likely to stir up some controversy at the heels of his conviction, though it doesn’t appear as though Tuffin will let that stop him from working with whoever he sees fit for the role.

As for Majors’ current legal issues, he’s now facing a lawsuit from Jabbari, the same ex he was on trial for allegedly assaulting. SZA & Keke Palmer To Star In Issa Rae-Produced Buddy Comedy Film

It goes without saying that it’s been a busy few months for SZA. Aside from winning four Grammys earlier this year, the songstress is currently in the process of readying the deluxe edition of her 2022 album SOS, Lana. Fans are as anxious as ever to hear what she has to offer on the upcoming project, though an official release date has yet to be confirmed.

Now, it’s been announced that she’ll be making her acting debut in a buddy comedy film for TriStar Pictures alongside Keke Palmer. Few details have been revealed about the upcoming endeavor at the time of writing. Supporters do know, however, that the screenplay was written by Rap Sh!t showrunner Syreeta Singleton and Lawrence Lamont will direct. Issa Rae, Sara Diya Rastogi, Charles D. King, James Lopez, and Poppy Hanks are producing. Singleton is acting as a co-producer while Palmer and her mother Sharon are executive producing.
