Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Electrifies A Kids’ Party In Viral Clip Of Sing & Dance-Along

The kids set a lot of the trends these days, so when a whole room of them catches up to what the adults are bumping, these pop culture moments reach another level of recognition. Ironically enough, this just happened to the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, as a clip recently went viral of a children’s party singing and dancing along to “Not Like Us’ quite fervently. A lot of folks will obviously point out how this isn’t a very appropriate song for grade schoolers to bump, whether in terms of the lyrical content or the absolutely vicious intent behind it. Regardless, you can’t do much to slow down what’s viral.

Of course, this has zero bearing on the battle’s public perception as a whole, and is more indicative of the massive success that “Not Like Us” has experienced individually. As for Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s current situation, we’re definitely in a more retrospective and speculative place right now where all folks can do is recap, analyze, theorize, and try to paint the picture in a more detailed fashion now that we have some distance from the onslaught. For example, one alleged detail we received via Compton artist JasonMartin was K.Dot’s reaction to Drizzy’s “Family Matters” diss, or at least the reaction he allegedly shared with Martin. As you might expect, it’s quite a dismissive one.

These Kids Love Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”

Elsewhere, though, Drake’s recent social media moves shading Kendrick Lamar and other new releases music-wise have fans chronicling the post-beef fallout with a lot of fervor, too. Whether it’s using the “BBL Drizzy” beat with Sexyy Red, insinuating the former TDE MC is a “one-trick pony,” or going full Toronto with “Wah Gwan Delilah,” people have a lot to say about his current movement, and of Kendrick Lamar’s role in it. For both good and bad reasons, it seems like The Boy is feeling the aftermath of what he wrote down.

Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar will pop out next week for his concert with friends in Los Angeles, following his commencement speech at Compton College. No one really knows what’s coming, although alum rumors are obviously rampant. But this show alone has folks incredibly excited, as we could be closing one era with a bang or entering a new one. We’ll have to wait and see what he has in store.

Flavor Flav Sticks Up For Megan Thee Stallion Amid Alleged AI Sex Tape Drama

Flavor Flav is a big fan of the new generation of hip-hop and music at large, as he’s always made some heartening appraisals of the next wave of artists. Sadly, his most recent message for a current superstar of the contemporary era is one provoked by negative attacks and allegedly defamatory practices. Moreover, readers may have heard that Megan Thee Stallion recently blasted folks who allegedly created and spread an A.I.-generated fake sex tape online. Flav took to Twitter on Sunday (June 9), to defend the Houston rapper and to call for more humane treatment of artists.

“Y’all leave this QUEEN alone,” Flavor Flav demanded. “entertainers are here to entertain and bring y’all happiness,,, we ain’t doing it at the cost of our own. This is why we can’t have nice things. SMH.” Furthermore, this isn’t the only recent defense of an artist that the Public Enemy legend engaged with. For example, he recently defended and supported country artist Jelly Roll’s decision to leave social media, praising his commitment to activism and community support through his music and endeavors.

Flavor Flav Defends Megan Thee Stallion

Elsewhere, Flavor Flav’s comments are a wider indication of the current discourse around Megan Thee Stallion, which is undeservingly critical and understandably skeptical at certain points. Still, one argument that seems particularly divisive online concerns the question of whether or not she’s an “arena artist,” a notion that Charlamagne Tha God disagrees with. In fact, Tina Snow even seemed to shade him and other critics of her tour, commercial performance, and stage presence. Sure, maybe it’s not as consistent as other acts, but look at any footage from this trek and you will see spectacles and crowds fit for massive platforms.

Meanwhile, another big subject of Flavor Flav’s defense is Taylor Swift, and Mary J. Blige recently commented on his comparison between the two. Whether or not he will continue his fandom for Megan Thee Stallion as he has as a Swiftie is another question entirely. But the New York native posits an important consideration for audiences to uphold the respectful and non-invasive relationship between artists and fans. As much as that seems impossible these days, there are very clear lines that far too many folks continue to ignore.

When Will Normani’s New Album ‘Dopamine’ Be On Apple Music?

normani

Music fans have waited a long time for Normani’s solo debut album (seriously, a LONG time), but the wait is nearly over. Dopamine, the former Fifth Harmony member’s first-ever solo album, is due to hit DSPs in just a few hours, after a rollout that has included the single “Candy Paint” and plenty of reflection on her time in the now-defunct girl band. So, when can you stream Dopamine on DSPs like Apple Music and Spotify?

With a due date of June 14, Dopamine should be available to stream as soon as clocks strike 12 midnight, Eastern time (9 PM Pacific), putting an end to nearly a decade of waiting for a full collection of solo music from the New Orleans native. With a 13-song tracklist including guest features from Cardi B, Gunna, and James Blake, Normani gave a hint of the behind-the-scenes struggles to make Dopamine a reality on Instagram.

“This moment symbolizes so much more than any photo could ever capture,” she wrote. “There has been so much resistance and many adversities throughout this process for me. Thank you to my fans for always keeping me encouraged and for being my reason to continue to endure and push through. This chapter is dedicated to you. ily guys more than you know.”

Dopamine is out on 6/14 via RCA.

Drake Is Being Sued By Members Only For Copyright Infringement Over Some Of His Tour Merch

Drake’s terrible, no-good 2024 continues. The beleaguered rapper, who already saw his reputation take several hits from his ill-advised war of words with Kendrick Lamar, is now being sued for copyright infringement by clothing brand Members Only. According to Billboard, the point of contention is a T-shirt Drake sold during his It’s All a Blur Tour emblazoned with the established brand’s name. The T-shirt referred to the title of a song on Drake’s latest album, For All The Dogs, which, in turn, was most likely inspired by the brand itself.

And while Drake can easily title a song “Members Only,” putting those words on a piece of clothing — the Members Only brand’s domain — he exposed himself to legal action. As the lawsuit states, “The fact that ‘Members Only’ is a song on Drake’s album ‘For All the Dogs’ does not obviate the likelihood of confusion or give [him] a license to use our client’s ‘Members Only’ marks in such a confusing manner, particularly on or in connection with apparel items.”

The fact that Drake’s tour production company, Away From Home Touring Inc., sold shirts bearing the words “Members Only” could have confused fans into thinking the brand Members Only was involved, according to the suit (just typing that out made me a little dizzy). “Away From Home sold … goods bearing the mark ‘Members Only’ that are identical, overlapping, and/or highly similar to the goods that JR Apparel sells bearing its MEMBERS ONLY Marks,” it alleges. Which means that Drake only has one more headache to deal with, when he’s supposed to be off somewhere licking his wounds.

Chris Brown Seems To Chastise His Tour Team After Stage Wire Malfunction Leaves Him Stranded In Mid-Air

Chris Brown’s been having a great time on his 2024 tour in support of last year’s album 11:11, but some nights are more frustrating than others. Moreover, a new clip emerged from his Tuesday night (June 11) show in New Jersey, in which technical difficulties during his performance of “Under The Influence” left him stranded in mid-air on suspension wires above dancers who didn’t notice the situation for a while. Eventually, staff arrived with a ladder to help Breezy down, and he unhooked himself and climbed back to safety to crowd cheers. However, he seemed irate, as it looks like he chastised a crew member before continuing his performance for fans.

Of course, this is small potatoes in the face of other conflicts that Chris Brown faced this year, as we know through his Quavo battle how his temper can get. Boosie Badazz recently spoke on this beef, naming Brown’s inclusion of Takeoff in the conversation as the moment when things really ramped up. While things didn’t turn to violence (and hopefully never do), Boosie thinks that this moment warranted that kind of response, or at least seemed to indicate it. It’s never justified, but it does kick things up a notch.

Chris Brown’s Frustrated Reaction To Wire Malfunction At New Jersey Tour Stop

Elsewhere in relation to this tour, Chris Brown is seeing night in and night out how it’s bringing him a lot of success. This is especially relevant in the face of both fans and detractors that think the industry has blackballed him as of late, whether for right or wrong reasons in their eyes. The superstar doesn’t really seem to buy into this narrative either way, since he’s playing packed shows and still captivating audiences worldwide. It’s interesting, however, that he didn’t speak on narratives against him in a more combative way, like he’s done in the past.

This could indicate that the success behind the 11:11 tour, plus constant fan acclaim and engagement, is enough to keep Chris Brown satisfied. It’s a very understandable conclusion, as he remains one of the most beloved, albeit controversial, stars in the realms of rap and R&B. Add onto that the steep profits from meet and greets, and there isn’t much reason to complain. Unless, of course, you’re hanging from a faulty cable and folks don’t come to help you for a while.

J Cole Criticized By “The Cosby Show” Actor For His Music’s Use Of The N-Word

J Cole has proven himself to be a very versatile MC when it comes to the different kinds of raps that he lays down. Sometimes, he’s in a deep lyrical mode that blends sociocultural messaging with personal narrative, and other times, he’s talking about chewing sticks like it’s Wrigley’s. Moreover, this push and pull is at the center of The Cosby Show actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s criticism of the current use of the n-word in hip-hop. During the launch of the 53-year-old’s new podcast Not All Hood on Monday (June 10), he spoke on specifically lamenting the use of this kind of language from his favorite lyricists, including the Dreamville boss.

“I think why I’m more against it now is because it’s used so gratuitously,” Warner expressed regarding J. Cole. “It’s used without regard. At this point, for me, in hip-hop, I think there should be a moratorium on ‘n***a’ and ‘b***h.’ It’s low-hanging fruit. It’s so easy. Everybody f***ing does it to the point that it’s corny.” It would be interesting to hear the “Trae The Truth In Ibiza” spitter’s thoughts on this interpretation.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s First Podcast Episode: Watch The J Cole & N-Word Conversation Around The 14-Minute Mark

“There are MCs who I love, who I cannot listen to anymore,” Warner continued on the premiere of his podcast. “I love J. Cole but I had to stop listening to J. Cole because I got tired of hearing ‘n***a’ and ‘b***h’ every two sentences. Because he’s proven himself to be such an incredible lyricist, [so I hate] the regularity that he does [use those words].” While this argument as far as profanity is a long-standing debate, it’s clear that Cole creates this contrast more strongly than folks would assume, and thus, his forays into words like these hit that much harder for detractors. If not for these terms, then some backlash pops up most certainly due to the varying quality of his recent material.

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting on whether The Fall Off will release soon, joining a lengthy list of the most anticipated albums of what’s left of 2024. But whether or not it ends up releasing in 2025 or even later is still an unconfirmed and undeniable possibility. Regardless, we’re looking forward to hearing whatever J. Cole does next. Even those who take issue with his lyrical content sometimes can’t deny how special of an artist he is.

The Weeknd Interviews Himself… His 10-Year-Old Self… An AI Version Of His 10-Year Old Self

Traditionally, music interviews are between a journalist and an artist. The medium can sometimes break free of that format, though. Sometimes, artists interview each other. Then there’s the latest one from The Weeknd. In it, he interviews himself, except it’s himself at 10 years old, except it’s himself at 10 years old as portrayed via AI.

This was arranged by SSENSE, who used ChatGPT to create a “realistic” chatbot version of young Abel Tesfaye, with which present-day Tesfaye had an era-spanning conversation.

The chat starts with talk about TV shows. The Weeknd notes he’s been watching King Of The Hill and AI Tesfaye responds, “King of the Hill sounds like a big adventure! I imagine sitting on a hill being the king of everything I see!” It then asks real The Weeknd if they can make a cartoon of their own together someday.

From there, the two talk about God, imagination, their mother, and more. Depending on your views on AI, the whole thing is either sweet or perhaps a little bit unsettling and strange. At the very least, it’s an interesting exercise in creative use of technology, more of a creative writing endeavor than a journalistic interview.

Drake Sued For Trademark Infringement Over Tour Merch: Details

Drake’s “It’s All A Blur” tour is one of the most successful hip-hop treks ever, but it apparently also resulted in some headaches for the team. Moreover, JR Apparel -– the company behind the Members Only brand -– sued his Away From Home Touring company in New York on Tuesday (June 11), according to court documents reportedly obtained by AllHipHop and initial reports from Billboard. The owners of Members Only accused the Texas resident of unlawfully using “Members Only,” which is also the title of one of his For All The Dogs tracks, in a way that could confuse consumers and in which Live Nation and Away From Home failed to obtain the proper licensing.

“Away From Home sold, offered for sale and/or advertised a T-shirt bearing JR Apparel’s Members Only mark on the front of the t-shirt at Drake’s ‘It’s All A Blur Tour’ (the ‘Infringing T-shirt’), including in this judicial district,” JR Apparel’s attorneys expressed, accusing the Toronto superstar of trademark infringement, unfair competition, and trademark dilution. This followed a letter the company reportedly sent Live Nation on April 1 about the alleged infringement. “Between April 3, 2024, and June 6, 2024, JR Apparel and Away From Home attempted to resolve their differences amicably. However, [this achieved] no resolution,” the suit reads.

Drake’s Tour Merch Leads To Trademark Infringement Lawsuit

“The fact that ‘Members Only’ is a song on Drake’s album ‘For All the Dogs’ does not obviate the likelihood of confusion or give Live Nation and/or Drake license to use our client’s MEMBERS ONLY Marks in such a confusing manner, particularly on or in connection with apparel items,” it went on. “Away From Home’s damage and/or injury to JR Apparel is exacerbated by the fact that, upon information and belief, counterfeits, intentionally confusing imitations and/or materially different garments of the Infringing T-shirts are being sold, offered for sale and/or advertised on eBay.”

Furthermore, JR Apparel seeks damages for this alleged trademark infringement and other supposed issues. It specifically asked the court to ban the sale of more merch with “Members Only” on it on Drake’s behalf. This comes at an interesting time in which fans are making their own merch of his beef with Kendrick Lamar and others in the form of a casette tape. Perhaps this will inspire a new merchandising strategy, one that avoids further hiccups in the trademark realm.

“This young lady is from my city, I’m very familiar with her rap success and it wasn’t a success! I mentioned her situation years ago, she was a FUCK TOY with talent who hardly put out music but posted a lot of social media pics!” White wrote. “If someone die doing what they like to do (getting high) then why should anyone be sad for that person? She died a dopefiend just like the rest of them in the music industry! I told y’all they was just fucking on her and wasn’t putting no music out!”
