Joe Budden Receives Barrage Of Backlash For Take On Tyla & Her Behavior At The VMAs

One of the most controversial talking heads in all of hip-hop is back at it again. Over the weekend, Joe Budden and the crew got to discussing the MTV VMAs that went down last Wednesday. The main focus during that portion of the podcast had to do with Tyla. Overall, there are some that feel she was acting snobby and standoffish throughout the entire program. For example, some were critiquing her for the way she was asking Lil Nas X and Halle Bailey to help her hold her award onstage.

This led to Armon Wiggins, a pretty big multi-media personality, to call out Tyla on social media. “Hey, I don’t think I like TYLA’s personality. I think someone needs to check her ’cause she doesn’t understand American culture AT ALL. She almost gives off entitled or uppity African vibes. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s very off-putting, and it’s almost like she expects people to just fall at her feet”.

Joe Budden Felt Tyla Curved USHER In A Stuck-Up Manner

This quote sparked debate on Joe Budden’s show as he was in complete agreement, according to IOL. Apparently, he’s been feeling this way about the “Water” hitmaker, citing an incident at one of USHER’s past shows being the catalyst. In the resurfaced clip above, USHER appears to try and get Tyla to dance on him, but she subtly dodges that advance of assumed showmanship. Joe felt she should have done it out of respect because the R&B legend was trying to show her love by doing this all while dancing to “Water”. However, his panel of co-hosts was in total disagreement, mentioning that she’s in a relationship and didn’t want to disrespect her man. That really set him off, but also the rest of the internet as they were in complete disagreement. You can see those reactions above and below.

What are your thoughts on Joe Budden unleashing on Tyla for her how she “dubbed” USHER at the VMAs? Do you agree that his take was too ridiculous, why or why not? Will Tyla or USHER have anything to say? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Joe Budden, Tyla, and USHER. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

Tyla Shut Down An Online Controversy Over Her VMAs Request With An Astute Observation

These days, it seems like folks on the internet can turn just about anything into a controversy. Case in point: During Tyla’s acceptance speech at last night’s MTV VMAs, she made a simple, relatable request that commenters on Twitter (never calling it “X”) twisted into a case of… bullying(?) one of the two presenters, fellow singer Halle Bailey. While being presented the moon person for Best Afrobeats, she expressed surprise at the weight of the statuette, joking, “I’m not strong enough!”

Offering the moon person to Lil Nas X, who was presenting alongside Halle, Tyla asked, “Can you hold it for me?” Twitter promptly lit up with accusations that she wanted Halle to hold it for her (although Nas was the one who ended up taking it). “Halle said baby I am NOT the help,” wrote one commentewrote one commenter Hold your own award boo. Tyla tried it.” Another added, “Halle tried handing her the cards & she brushed her off but expected her to hold her award.”

Tyla herself, though, wasn’t having any of it, shutting down such speculation with an astute observation: “Y’all make everything weird… I was not asking my girl Halle… We just girls.” She also offered those detractors some friendly advice: “STFU I WON A VMAAAA.”

Ever since her single “Water” became a ubiquitous hit, Tyla has become something of a lightning rod for manufactured controversy. In a recent interview with the Breakfast Club, she was asked a question about her coloured identity — which she had specifically asked them not to do — and before that, she was criticized for taking a photo with Representative Nancy Pelosi by fans who disagreed with Pelosi’s policies (if they even know what those polices are).

For all these folks, here’s some more advice, free of charge: Seek therapy.

Megan Thee Stallion Pays Homage To Beyonce & Britney Spears At The MTV VMAs

As host of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, there was a lot on Megan Thee Stallion’s mind last night (Wednesday, September 11). But one thing she certainly didn’t forget about was to pay tribute to iconic VMAs history, current big moments in pop culture, and two superstars who represent these pillars to a tee. The Houston femcee recreated Beyonce’s stunning one-piece outfit in red, white, and blue that she used to introduce Team USA for the 2024 Olympic Games. Then, she replicated Britney Spears’ classic outfit for her 2001 VMAs performance of “I’m A Slave 4 U,” complete with a snake that scared the living daylights out of her. “I tried to hold it down for Britney,” Meg shared.

Of course, we know how much Megan Thee Stallion loves her Houston, Texas sister Beyoncé. “Yall i have been ugly crying with my lace lifting all weekend lol,” she expressed on Instagram, where she posted a video of her performing with Queen Bey at their home city’s RENAISSANCE tour stop. “I will never stop screaming about this moment! I have loved @beyonce MY WHOLE LIFE. This means EVERYTHING TO ME!!! I love you [queen bee emoji] thank you thank you thank you for everything.”

Megan Thee Stallion’s Tributes To Beyonce & Britney Spears

Elsewhere, Megan Thee Stallion hasn’t said much publicly about Britney Spears to our knowledge, but this homage certainly makes that admiration and inspiration clear. Overall, it seemed like she had a great time as host and performer. However, now fans are wondering whether the “NDA” MC is sharing these moments with a special someone, as folks recently spotted her out with Torrey Craig in New York City. New relationship rumors are hot off the presses…

Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion might have even more stuff planned for 2024, as she just released a single with RM titled “Neva Play.” We wonder whether or not 2025 will be as busy of a year for her, although there’s certainly a lot to compete with when you look at the past nine months or so. A full album rollout and momentary Nicki Minaj beef sound absolutely exhausting. But when you don’t have a lot of motivation, inspiration, or energy, you can always count on the OGs to give you that spark again.

Eminem Throws It Back At The VMAs By Recreating Iconic Slim Shady Performance

24 years ago, Eminem brought his massive hit “The Real Slim Shady” to grace the MTV Video Music Awards. He and a whole host of doppelgängers took to the streets and then entered Radio City Music Hall, making their way to the main stage. It’s an iconic moment not just in VMAs history, but also when it comes to the Detroit legend’s performance repertoire. As such, it’s no surprise that his return to the ceremony’s stage (opening the show for the first time since 2010) chose to pay tribute to it. Furthermore, Em donned a blond wig and walked among the audience at the UBS Arena before joining his blond lookalikes and D12’s Mr. Porter onstage, performing “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me” featuring Jelly Roll.

Of course, this also fits in pretty well with the themes of Eminem’s new album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). On that LP (and its upcoming extended version), he tackles his alter ego and tries to find a balance between his real self and his exaggerated artistic expressions. This is nothing new for Marshall Mathers. But it definitely carries a more overtly and critically nostalgic context compared to something like The Marshall Mathers LP 2 or Music To Be Murdered By.

Eminem’s MTW VMAs Performances, 24 Years Apart

Nevertheless, this VMAs performance and its homage to its 24-year-old predecessor was quite heartening to witness. Eminem actually reflected on the 2000 VMAs in his 2008 book The Way I Am. “‘The Real Slim Shady’ was my biggest hit then, and the 2000 VMAs were a real milestone,” he wrote. “I can’t front, I was nervous about that performance.

“When I saw all those lookalikes walking out of Radio City Music Hall, I was trying to be as cool as I could and keep my composure,” Eminem continued. “But for at least the first 30 seconds of the song I could not shake my nerves off. I watched a DVD of that night recently, and I can see how tense I was. That was one of those moments when I was thinking, ‘Hey, I think I’ve made it in rap. I’m a big-time rapper, rapping big-time!’”

GloRilla Plays Off Nearly NSFW Wardrobe Malfunction During VMAs Performance

GloRilla was one of plenty of stars who hit the MTV Video Music Awards stage on Wednesday (September 11), and did so explosively. Moreover, she performed her two big 2024 hits, those being “Yeah Glo!” and “TGIF.” It was overall a pretty satisfying and fun performance, but the swift wardrobe change in between songs was sadly imperfect. A couple of minutes into the “TGIF” rendition, the “Mama” femcee’s bra strap seemed to come apart, and she had to hold onto it with one hand while rapping into the mic in the order so that she wouldn’t expose herself. That wasn’t part of the rehearsals…

Still, GloRilla kept her composure and performed throughout the song without missing a beat. The only thing that made an issue noticeable was the visual aspect of seeing her hold onto herself. Eventually, once the Memphis native was back and standing on the main stage, a backup dancer noticed the issue and fixed the issue so that she could perform normally to close the medley out. It was a pretty smooth and easily manageable malfunction, so props to her and her team for being so graceful with it. Her frequent collaborator Megan Thee Stallion also had some killer performances as well as a hosting gig, and it seems like we might get a full joint album from them in the near future.

GloRilla’s VMAs Performance

The malfunction occurs at around the 2:30-minute mark.

Elsewhere, though, GloRilla recently reflected on how social media meanies can motivate you as much as they can irritate you. It just depends on which side of yourself you let win. “I remember bookmarking dis & telling myself ‘Dey gotchu f***ed up so bad,’” she quote-tweeted a post that read “Glorilla fell off so fast and bad” along with crying emojis. “Dis post ain’t do s**t but put a battery in my back i needed data don’t let dese people write yo story for you , Keep going !!!”

Meanwhile, we might see another side to GloRilla’s artistry develop further these days. She recently showed off her singing skills on a new Muni Long collab, which many fans weren’t expecting. It’s not perfect (just like anything else), but it could definitely lead to more dynamic performances in the future. Let’s hope that these don’t run into the same wardrobe malfunctions, although it’s good to know that these are no problem at all for Big Glo to handle.

LL Cool J Gave The 2024 VMAs Crowd A Hip-Hop History Lesson With His Medley Performance

The official Hip-Hop 50 celebration may have wrapped up last year, but LL kept the hip-hop history lesson going at the 2024 MTV VMAs. His medley performance not only included songs from his newly released fourteenth studio album, The FORCE, but also encompassed many of his signature hits going back to his glory days in hip-hop’s Golden Age. Opening with “Headsprung” (remixed with the now-familiar Mohawks sample, “The Champ,” rather than its original Timbaland-produced beat) then transforming into Public Enemy’s “Bring The Noise” (with a surprise appearance from Chuck D himself), the veteran performer also went through “Rock The Bells” before hitting newer songs like “Passion” and “Proclivities” before returning to another classic: “Doin’ It.” You can watch the full performance above.

Ironically, LL’s performance was nearly upstaged during a shot of the audience featuring a woman standing motionless, staring at the stage, and grinning in such an eerie way, that it seems almost certain that she was an actor planted to promote the upcoming horror thriller Smile 2. Unfortunately, though, LL didn’t perform “Murdergram Deux,” his collaboration with Eminem, who also performed tonight to open the VMAs, but probably did leave before LL’s performance.

GloRilla Got Down To Business In Her 2024 VMAs Performance Of ‘Yeah Glo!’ And ‘TGIF’

The crowd at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards was left yelling, “Yeah, Glo!” after GloRilla’s performance of that song, decked out in a black-and-white suit, which turned into a skimpy bikini as she performed “TGIF” atop a conference table, replete with the flames that seemed like a prerequisite for pretty much every other performance of the night.

The Memphis native is fresh off the release of her second mixtape, Ehhthang Ehhthang, which produced “Wanna Be” with Megan Thee Stallion, its remix with Cardi B, and “All Dere” with Moneybagg Yo. She also joined Megan Thee Stallion on her Hot Girl Summer Tour, realized that Cardi B is her cousin, and had a slew of various wardrobe malfunctions. She was also presented with the key to the city of Memphis, making her very much a hometown hero and a burgeoning superstar.

She and Meg also apparently have plans to drop a joint album in the near future, with Meg saying, “I ain’t gon’ say too much, but it feels like it’s going to get done.” Not bad for a pair of rappers who say they weren’t sure about each other when they first met.

You can check out GloRilla’s performance video above, and keep up with the full list of VMAs winners here.

Megan Thee Stallion Turned Up In Her 2024 VMAs Performance Of ‘Boa,’ ‘B.A.S.,’ ‘Hiss,’ And ‘Mamushi’

In addition to hosting the 2024 MTV VMAs, Megan Thee Stallion was also booked as a performer. She absolutely killed both roles, pulling out some iconic looks from the show’s past during her hosting duties, and then burning the house down with her performance, which included hits “Boa,” “B.A.S.,” “Hiss,” and “Mamushi,” for which she was joined by guest rapper Yuki Chiba in his first US performance. The Houston hottie is also nominated for five awards, with Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, and Best Visual Effects among them.

Meg’s had a busy 2024, dropping her new album Megan while completing her Hot Girl Summer Tour with GloRilla, during which she became one of the WNBA’s biggest supporters by bringing players like Natasha Cloud and Angel Reese on stage with her. Then, she joined Kamala Harris’ campaign, declaring that the Vice President is “for the Hotties” during a performance at one of the Presidential hopeful’s rallies.

And just when it seemed like she’d delivered all the new music she had to offer this year, she teamed up once again with BTS’s RM for another cross-cultural collaboration, “Neva Play.” Oh, and she seemingly hard-launched her relationship with NBA player Torrey Craig, so it looks like she’s having her fair share of play along with all that work.

You can watch Megan Thee Stallion’s medley performance here, and check out all of the night’s winners here.

Flavor Flav Surprised Jordan Chiles With A Bejeweled Clock Necklace And A Promise Of Covering Her Olympic Prize Money

The 2024 MTV VMAs’ opening was Olympics-coded. Host Megan Thee Stallion delivered her opening monologue in a gymnastics-adjacent leotard because, as she said, she is “repping Team VMA.” Meg also clarified that “VMA” stands for the Voluptuous Megan Awards” and declared that she deserves “a gold medal for being a bad b*tch!” Megan Thee Stallion kicked it over to Flavor Flav and USA Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles to present the night’s first category, Best Collaboration.

But before announcing the winner, Flavor Flav had more important business to take care of. The iconic rapper, pop cultural icon, and newly minted Team USA mascot gifted Chiles a bedazzled pink clock necklace to replace her Olympic bronze medal that she was controversially (and wrongfully, but that’s a discussion for another day) stripped of.

“I know they tried to take your medal away from you,” Flav said, as captured by Deadline, and briefly paused to account for the audience booing. “I got you something that they can’t take away from you.”

Flavor Flav put the gigantic clock around Chiles’ neck, and Chiles thanked Flavor Flav while the crowd applauded.

“As you know, I am an official sponsor for the United States Olympic Water Polo team,” Flav continued. “So, that’s why I wanted to turn this into an Olympic moment, Jordan, a’ight? And guess what else, too? I got your prize money, too.”

Before the 2024 Paris Olympics got underway in July, Megan Thee Stallion sent Chiles a bouquet of flowers to send her off.

Chiles won the women’s team gold medal alongside her teammates, and she had been awarded the bronze medal for individual floor, but days later, the Romanian team filed a petition to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The CAS ruled to reinstate the initial scoring, awarding the bronze to Romanian Ana Barbosu and ordering Chiles return hers. See the full timeline of the controversy here.

Oh, and Post Malone and Taylor Swift won Best Collaboration for “Fortnight.”

Eminem’s 2024 VMAs Opening Performance Of ‘Houdini’ Called Back His 2000 VMA Debut

Eminem opened the 2024 MTV VMAs in nostalgic fashion, hearkening back to his first-ever VMAs performance in 2000. Back then, he was a new artist nominee and stormed the stage with dozens of duplicates to perform his then-new hit, “The Real Slim Shady.” Tonight, he did the same thing, bringing out a fleet of anachronistic fellow Slims to perform his Death Of Slim Shady cuts “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me.” While he was not joined on stage by Jelly Roll, the Tennessee crooner did make an appearance via video screen. The performance set the tone for what to expect throughout the show, which has already included a number of references to VMAs past — perhaps to shut down skeptics who wondered why the VMAs would still be considered a big deal, 40 years later.

Eminem is one of the most nominated artists of the evening with eight nominations — which gives him plenty of opportunities to break the record for most MTV Video Music Awards won by a single act. He’s nominated for Artist Of The Year, Video Of The Year, Best Hip-Hop, Best Direction, and Best Visual Effects for “Houdini.” That debut performance of “The Real Slim Shady”/”The Way I Am” is also up for an award for VMAs Most Iconic Performance.

You can follow along throughout the evening for all the winners with our list of 2024 MTV VMAs winners here. Check out Eminem’s performance above.
