Don Toliver Delivers His Most Ambitious Project To Date With “Love Sick”

The Cactus Jack camp is revving up for a major year ahead, kicking off with Don Toliver. The Houston Native geared up for the release of a new album over the past few weeks. He dropped “Do It Right” in 2022 as his sole single of the year as he continued to ride high off of Life Of A DON. Don Toliver cemented himself in this unique space between hip-hop and R&B throughout the years, though he indicated that his future ventures would lean towards the latter.

During an interview with W Magazine, he explained how his new album would differ from Life Of A Don. “I’ve had some crazy records, stuff in the chamber, a lot of good music I’d been holding on to that will be on this album,” Don Toliver said last year. “Life of a Don gives you insight into what I have going on right now. And that sound is really just how I feel. It’s the soundtrack of my life, and it’s coming from a new feeling.”

Don Toliver – Love Sick

After an influx of releases in the past week, Don Toliver returned this week with his latest studio album, LoveSick. Jay Critch Enters “Jugg Season” On New Mixtape

Though we’ve seen a flurry of artists prosper out of New York City, Jay Critch remains one of the most underrated artists to emerge in recent years. Since he signed to Rich The Kid’s Rich Forever label, Jay Critch delivered a flurry of music that have captivated rap fans. He hasn’t necessarily played up to any antics to boost his streams or leaped into making TikTok-friendly singles. Critch stands as one of the most consistent MCs among the new generation of New York artists who deserves every bit of shine he receives.

The rapper made his formal debut in 2018 with the release of Hood Favorite. The project showcased his potential, especially as he collided with established MCs. He traded bars with Fabolous and French Montana on “Try It.” Offset delivered a stand-out verse on “Quicker.” Since then, he’s blessed fans with projects like Signed With Love and Critch Tape, along with compilation projects from the TME team.

Jay Critch Drops “Juug Season”

In the past few months, he’s drummed up anticipation for his next body of work. Following the release of singles like “Where’s Dexter” along with Rich The Kid and Famous Dex and “Oh What A Feeling,” he finally came through with Juug Season in its entirety. From the moment you press play on “That Was Random,” Critch comes out swinging with a newfound sense of clarity. Critch sound more focused across the project while his flow feels more refined. It’s another solid outing from Jay Critch that further cements him as a leading voice on the East Coast.

Critch enslists a number of collaborators to bring the project to life. On the production side, he links up with Luca Beats, Bngrz, 17ondatrack, LaRon, and more. The features aren’t extensive, either, but each artist who appears on the tracklist further compliment Critch. He teams up with the incarcerated legend Max B on “Still Wavy,” Quality Control’s Baby Money appears on “Raincoats,” and frequent collaborator and close friend Rich The Kid comes through on “Missiles.” Check the project in its entirety above and let us know your favorite track in the comments.

Tupac’s “Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z…” Expanded Edition Arrives

During a matter of years, Tupac left behind a catalog that’s cherished and celebrated to this day. The late rapper delivered his final album, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, after he died in Las Vegas. However, throughout the years, fans received an abundance of posthumous releases, from Until The Death Of Time to Better Days. Though some of the latter releases in his career weren’t met with praise as his earlier output, there’s no doubt that everything he’s released, during his lifetime and after, had an incredible impact on hip-hop to this day.

Though we haven’t received much new music from ‘Pac’s estate in recent times, they haven’t shorted fans on celebrating massive milestones in his career. This week marked the 30th anniversary of his second studio album, Strictly For My N.*.*.*.A.Z. The follow-up to 2Pacalypse Now further carved out his voice in rap, politically, socially, and musically. The project boasts 16 songs in total with appearances from Ice-T, Ice Cube, Treach, Digital Underground. It remains one of the most celebrated album in ‘Pac’s catalog, especially since it produced singles like “I Get Around” and “Keep Ya Head Up.”

What Was Added To The Expanded Edition Of Tupac’s Second Studio Album?

As the 30th anniversary arrived on Feb. 16th, his estate unloaded the official expanded version of the project. The album contains the original sixteen songs, along with six additional records, including four remixes. Madukey shares his remix of “Keep Ya Head Up” while a “New York Stretch” remix of “Holler If You Hear Me” shows up on the tracklist, as well. Additionally, you’ll find a remix of “I Get Around” and Vibe Tribe’s flip of “Papa’z Song.”

The project also contains the underrated single, “Flex” alongside the Outlawz, which dropped in 1993. Then, there’s the inclusion of Heavy D’s “Let’s Get it On,” which is among the rare times that Tupac and Biggie both appeared on the same song together. The re-release of Strictly For My N.*.*.*.A.Z is a firm remind of why ‘Pac stood as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Kelela Shares New Album “Raven”

Kelela became a certified voice in the R&B scene since emerging. Though she maintains a rather lowkey presence compared to some of her contemporaries, her music truly speaks for itself. The “Washed Away” singer pushed the boundaries with each project. Kelela takes the sounds of traditional R&B and forms them into something of her own with a variety of influences. And while she isn’t the type to release a new project each year, the wait is always worth it. It’s what makes her one of the most unique voices in the R&B space.

In the past year, she built up anticipation for the release of a new project. With singles like “Happy Ending” and “On The Run” (a song she co-produced and includes contributions from Kaytranada and Junglepussy), she left fans eager for the next chapter of her career. She dropped off Take Me Apart in 2017 and basically, left fans waiting for her next project in the six years that followed. Though she dropped a remix project the following year, 2022 was among the first time we’ve heard from her since Take Me A_Part, The Remixes.

Kelela Drops Off “Raven”

The wait is over and Kelela made her triumphant return on Friday morning with her sophomore LP, Raven. Her new project boasts 15 songs in total with a sole feature from RAHRAH GABOR. This time, Kelela expands her sound to incorporate more dance-friendly sounds. It was as evident when she released “Contact” earlier this year. The project also boasts previously released singles like “Enough For Love,” which includes a strong roster of producers, including Asmara, Badsista, Bambii, Florian ™ Zeisig, Mocky, and Yo van Lenz.

The project takes a noticeable amount of cues from dance music. However, it’s not a gimmick to hop on the bandwagon of what we’ve seen with Drake and Beyoncé last year. Instead, these sounds allow her to convey a specific vibe – sexy. “I really want to be sexy in a nuanced way,” she told the New York Times this week. “We want our sexy moments to feel one of a kind, that’s why it feels sexy — because you don’t think that it’s run of the mill.”  Press play on Raven and sound off with your thoughts in the comments below.

Lance Skiiiwalker’s “Audiodidactic” Album Lands With Ab-Soul & Isaiah Rashad Features

Top Dawg Entertainment’s artists are a force to be reckoned with this New Music Friday. Previously we highlighted Zacari’s new “Motions” single in tandem with Ab-Soul. Now, we have another appearance from each of those artists on Lance Skiiiwalker’s latest project. Audiodidactic landed on DSPs at midnight, complete with 11 tracks as well as an additional guest appearance from V.C.R.

Ahead of his album’s debut, the artist dropped off “Beantown” as a single in late January. “I experienced Boston once while I was on tour, it felt like a really cool city,” he explained of that release. “Thinking about it more, I realized it was missing a love song. I haven’t heard anything about Boston in that world. The record is more about the vibes I felt there than a particular person, the girl is a metaphor.”

While he carries most of the titles on his own, Skiiiwalker did recruit Ab-Soul to help him on “Church.” A few songs later, on “Sample Talk,” we once again hear from another TDE star, Isaiah Rashad. Before his inevitable rise to fame, the “Lover’s Lane” artist was discovered by former TDE labelmate Kendrick Lamar. He’s previously been described as the collective’s “secret weapon” by Moosa, their president. Aside from his own releases, Lance has worked alongside names like ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul on their own tapes.

Shy Glizzy Shares Highly Anticipated New Album “Flowers”

The wait is over for new music from Shy Glizzy. The DMV rapper spent the past year building the anticipation for his next release to follow-up Young Jefe 3. The mixtape arrived in 2020, and then, he delivered Feed The Sharks, a compilation project from Glizzy Gang. Overall, fans have anticipated what he has up his sleeve after he released a string of promising singles throughout 2022. Songs like “Borderline” ft. EST Gee and “Underrated” warmed fans up for what he had in store for 2023.

Along with the aforementioned singles, he found success of TikTok in late 2022 with “White Girl.” The song gained significant traction and couldn’t come at a better time. Around then, he also shared singles like “Slime-U-Out” ft. 21 Savage and at the top of the year, unveiled the NBA Youngboy-assisted, “Fools Fall N Love.” All of these records ultimately repositioned Shy Glizzy as a leader in the DMV rap scene and now, he’s finally unveiled his long-awaited project, Flowers.

Shy Glizzy’s Flowers ft. Chris Brown, NBA Youngboy & More

This morning, Shy Glizzy’s new album arrived in its entirety. Laced with 20 songs in total, the rapper enlists a few artists to help. Chris Brown, 21 Savage, NBA Youngboy, and EST Gee appear on the tracklist, while Glizzy holds down the majority of the project on his own. It’s another impressive body of work from Shy Glizzy that certainly won’t disappoint his fans, whether day ones or new supporters who discovered him through TikTok.

During a recent interview with Akademiks on Off The Record, Glizzy explained the album’s title reflects his longevity in the game. Despite co-signs from artists like Beyoncé, he feels as though he hasn’t received his rightful credit. “I’ve been in this s**t for a minute now, man,” he explained. “I feel like the growth is there, this s**t’s finally gotten to a point where the knives are sharpening, and all the respect is due.
