Marsha Ambrosius Enlists Dr Dre For Lush New Album “Casablanco”

Marsha Ambrosius can belt. She generates raw power on a song, and has been able to do for her entire career. The songs and the production haven’t already been up to par, but Ambrosius’ voice demands to be paid attention to. This inconsistency is what makes her new album, Casablanco, such a revelation. The album boasts Dr Dre production that’s lush, incredibly catchy, and crucially, worthy of its singer. Casablanco is only 11 tracks in length, but it’s about as satisfying as a classic R&B can be.

The opening track, “Smoke,” establishes the winning formula of the album. Dr Dre provides a backdrop that’s both sultry and hard-hitting. It’s tailored to Marsha Ambrosius’ sensitivity as a performer, but it has a hip-hop edge that keeps things engaging. The same can be said for standouts “Greedy” and “Thrill Her.” The latter interpolates Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” and spruces it up with arguably the best beat on the album. Saxophone pops in and out, while the hard-hitting drums anchor a sample of Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood.” Ambrosius, charismatic as ever, still manages to keep the spotlight focused firmly on her. The Dr Dre formula falters somewhat towards the end of Casablanco. The flamenco guitar on “Best I Could Find” is a bit overdone, but overall, this is one of the best R&B albums of the year.

Lucky Daye Firmly Sticks The Landing On Ambitious “Algorithm”

“I chose ‘Algorithm’ because I wanted to highlight what R&B was in my own algorithm. Everything I’ve ever heard that sounded like R&B to me, whether it was soul or blues. I wanted to bring it to life in my own way. This album from beginning to end is different versions of what I feel R&B is. It’s everything that makes me. I wanted to become one with the algorithm and with the music”. That is what Lucky Daye had to say to Clash in regard to the creative process behind Algorithm. This is the third studio album from the now mainstay in the modern field of R&B. However, this project does not feel all that contemporary.

It seems like the Louisiana native was going for an old-school aesthetic. If that is true, then he absolutely crushed it in that aspect. Amplifying that are the sick guitar solos, thick drums, and extremely soulful vocals. Overall, Lucky Daye did not leave any stone unturned. That is something he emphasized when crafting Algorithm, as he expressed how meticulous he was, especially this time through. “We are actual musicians, we’re the technical, nerdy, and scientific music makers. I love working with people like that. I understand that some people are here to entertain us, but I like working with real musicians”. We are of the belief that this is Lucky’s strongest outing to date, as even though he takes more risks in all aspects, the results are rewarding for all of the senses.

Boldy James Has Another AOTY Contender With Conductor Williams-Assisted “Across The Tracks”

The underground scene has a lot of standout voices, but Boldy James might be the guy at this moment in time. Atlanta born and Detroit raised, the Griselda affiliate seemingly winds up on every album of the year list. His consistency is probably his greatest attribute, as he rarely misses on a LP or EP. For example, Boldy and his co-star, Nicholas Craven, already have a critically praised tape out with Penalty of Leadership. Now, you might want to add Across The Tracks, the first collaboration between Boldy James and Conductor Williams, to those rankings.

The former loves to work alongside hip-hop’s best beat makers quite often. So, it was only a matter of time before him, and Conductor linked up. The latter is also on quite of run of his own. From his work with Drake to JID, the legendary boom-bap specialist is now going to get even more shine thanks to his efforts on Across The Tracks. His instrumentals range from downright blissful to dark and grungy. Some our favorite beats include “The Ol Switcharoo”, “Flying Trapeze Act”, “Lamp Shade”, and “Terms And Conditions”. Speaking of the latter, it was one of two promotional tracks, with “Offwhite Lumberjack” being the more recent one. As for Boldy’s performances, they are top notch again, mixing great rhymes, some humor, along with relentless flows. Both artists are in their bags from track 1-10.

Devin Malik Is A Legit Dual Threat On His Debut LP “DEADSTOCK”

From unknown producer to a name on projects from ScHoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashad, Devin Malik has built up his cache methodically. Now, the Rancho Cucamonga, California multi-hyphenate is getting the chance to let his skills do the talking all by himself. Devin Malik is doing so with his “AUDIBLE HORROR FILM” about “LUST, RAGE, [and] COMEDY” called DEADSTOCK. This is his introduction project, led by singles such as “CANADIAN TUX”, “BACKSTAGE”, “PDA”, and “LINK DUCKER”. Because of this, the features are held to nearly zero, as ScHoolboy is the only guest and appears on the chaotic and epic opener, “BANG YOUR HEAD”.

On DEADSTOCK, Devin Malik is definitely giving you the three themes he promised. You can tell he enjoys his Playboi Carti and Ken Carson production wise. “BANG YOUR HEAD”, “GEEKERTOWN”, and “CANADIAN TUX” are prime examples of this. But Devin is far from a copycat. The production feels accessible without being formulaic. As we mentioned, his original calling card is beat making, and it is something that has been in development for a while now. If you remember his instrumentals from BLUE LIPS they are from the norm. That same care is on DEADSTOCK, especially on the performance side. Overall, Devin is giving you a lot of raw energy and dynamic vocal deliveries. So, if you are looking for a relatively new artist who is offering something a little left field, we highly recommend Devin’s debut.

James Blake & Lil Yachty Captivate & Surprise On “Bad Cameo”

Just over four months ago, Lil Yachty shared an interview clip on Instagram talking about James Blake. The key quotables from it were these: “I think James is working with a quite substantial amount of hip-hop artists, but this project is just… so left. For both of us”. “It’s just gonna be like ‘what the f***?! When they do this?!’”. After that fairly vague soundbite, the trailer-like post made things a little clearer. “CMYK PRESENTS ‘BAD CAMEO’ A FULL LENGTH ALBUM BY JAMES BLAKE & LIL YACHTY”. Fans were undoubtedly excited and intrigued, but no one was sure when we would receive it. Thankfully, on June 6, both artists shared the album cover, as well as the release date.

We are happy to say that Bad Cameo is here today, June 28, and it is quite tremendous. That may be a surprise to some, but perhaps why this album works is all thanks to Let’s Start Here. That LP by Yachty opened the versatility floodgates and most likely gave James Blake and the rapper belief that this would be possible. Honestly, though, it does more than just get by it passes with flying colors. Sure, there are some moments where it feels like one artist is in more control than the other. But the number of times that they mesh far outweighs the moments where they clash. In fact, that is so minimal that we would argue the album nearly flawless.

While that might be recency bias kicking in, hear us out. The instrumentals, which are handled by Lil Yachty, James Blake, BNYX, Dom Maker, and SADPONY, are all so unique from each other. Like the beats, the vocals are also extremely captivating and feel futuristic at times. Furthermore, the lyrical content is deep, self-reflective, and emotional, and they almost always complement the moods of the sonics. This is far from a traditional R&B/hip-hop album. Bad Cameo is something truly extraordinary and needs to be explored again and again.

Lupe Fiasco Proves Lyrically Sharp As Ever On New Album “Samurai”

Lupe Fiasco knows how to rap. An understatement, perhaps. Lupe knows how to rap better than most people walking the planet. He has the rare ability to make rhymes sound both intricate and cool at the same time, if you’ll pardon the pun. He’s also managed to put out some of his best work in the second half of his career. Fans worrying about Food & Liquor being his only classic have been put at ease by what he’s dropped over the last eight years. Samurai continues his hot streak.

The album draws obvious comparisons between the titular Japanese warrior and the proficiency of Lupe as a rapper. That’s where the obviousness of this album comes to a halt. The Chicago icon spends thirty minutes rattling off dense bars and intricate stories over jazzy production. Samurai is only eight songs, but there’s nothing about this offering that feels rushed or incomplete. Lupe Fiasco is such a confident and measured storyteller, at this point, that he seemingly can’t miss. Those seeking radio hits like “Kick, Push” or “Superstar” will be disappointed, but Lupe is at a different point in his career. He’s focusing on skill, and making whole albums out of stellar deep cuts. Samurai won’t convert non-Lupe believers, but it will serve as a reminder of his greatness to fans. “Mumble Rap” and “Til Eternity,” in particular.

Megan Thee Stallion Decimates Her Haters On New Album “Megan”

Megan Thee Stallion has a lot to get off her chest. She dealt with a lot of hate in the last few years, and she decided to bottle all her frustration and trash talk for her self-titled album. “There’s a reason that “HISS,” her diss against Nicki Minaj, made the tracklist. Yes, it did top the Billboard Hot 100, but it sets the proper tone for Megan, which is aggressive and confident. Megan Thee Stallion doesn’t have time to waste on her haters, because she’s too busy being successful. This is the overriding thesis of the album, and it makes for a pretty entertaining listen.

The guest features are dished out during the middle portion of Megan. GloRilla and Victoria Monet provide very different, albeit compelling features on “Accent” and “Spin,” respectively. There’s also Kyle Rich on the album highlight “B.A.S.” The rapper has a memorable sixteen, but the real appeal of the song lies in the lush Teena Marie sample. The real surprise, in terms of features, is UGK on “Paper Together.” Megan Thee Stallion pays tribute to her Texas roots by including verses from Bun B and the late, great, Pimp C. The result is a chilled-out, flow-heavy affair that easily ranks among the album’s best. Megan handles the rest of the album’s songs on her own. She slides on the menacing “Otuka Hot Girl,” but “Moody Girl” is surprisingly poignant. The rapper gets personal and vulnerable, and the results are fascinating. Megan is the best Megan album yet.

Boosie Badazz Chefs Up Some Cold Tracks On “Russia”

Boosie Badazz is someone who does not bite his tongue. If he feels a certain way about something, he is going to share his opinion, even it offends others. That is especially true on his brand-new song, “Letter to the LGBT”. It is essentially a commentary about the community that includes a half-baked apology. We say that because throughout the four-and-a-half-minute record, he talks about trans athletes, gender reassignment surgery and more. He even goes as far as to say, “I told him not to cut his d**k off”. This song is now on the “cold” opener on Russia, the latest album from Boosie Badazz.

This is alredy the fifth project from the prolific Louisiana rapper this year. Russia most recently follows up on Happy Thanksgiving & Merry Christmas, which is only five days old. Before than Boosie’s fans were treated to another take on the Blues genre with Boosie Blues, as well as Bleek Mode and In House 2: Boosie and the Beast. On Russia, Boosie Badazz is giving you his familiar style of soulful trap on 12 tracks. What is also reoccurring here is that the features are held to a minimum. Just one guest makes the cut, and that is Og Dre on the closer, “Stuck On You”. If you want to hear what else Boosie is laying down, you can check out Russia with the streaming links below.

OT7 Quanny Tacks On Five New Tracks To “Leaks, Vol. 2”

There is another budding star making waves in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania rap scene once again. It seems like every few months there is someone grabbing people’s attention from the historic city. Lately, Armani White has been that guy, getting co-signs from major players like Denzel Curry and Billie Eilish. In fact, he will be a feature on the former’s upcoming mixtape, The King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2. But it seems the baton is being handed over to OT7 Quanny now, especially with his new EP, Leaks, Vol. 2. This is the latest project from the 27-year-old, and it spans 10 tracks.

However, this is more of an extended version of the first Leaks, as the original set of five is a part of this larger collection. If you want to know what the new entries are, they are tracks 1-5. According to OT7 Quanny, all of these newer songs on Leaks, Vol. 2. are from 2020. Additionally, it seems that they were highly anticipated, as the rapper claims the project is currently top 15 in the world. Quanny expressed his gratitude to his fans while also respectfully putting other rappers on notice. “Some of y’all favorite rappers got real albums out with real real marketing and we streaming more then them no disrespect but don’t act like this normal”. If that is not enough to tap into his music, then we do not know what will.
