Her 2002 album, Under Construction, is a testament to her influence and creativity in the music industry. This album highlighted her artistic versatility and solidified her status as a trailblazer in a genre often dominated by male voices.

Under Construction came when Elliott was already renowned for her boundary-pushing work. This album took her artistry to new heights. It combined her signature quirky beats with thought-provoking lyrics, addressing social issues and personal empowerment. The album resonated with a wide audience, earning acclaim for its musical ingenuity and cultural relevance.

Under Construction: Innovating Hip-Hop And R&B

Under Construction showcases Missy Elliott’s unparalleled ability to blend hip-hop with R&B, infused with her distinctive flair. The production, helmed by Elliott and her long-time collaborator Timbaland, brought a fresh and futuristic sound to the album, mixing classic hip-hop beats with avant-garde electronic influences. This fusion created a nostalgic and forward-thinking backdrop, perfectly complementing Elliott’s innovative lyrical style.

The album features standout tracks like “Work It” and “Gossip Folks,” which dominated the charts and became cultural touchstones. “Work It,” known for its catchy hook and reverse-played lyrics, displayed Elliott’s playful yet masterful manipulation of language and sound. “Gossip Folks,” featuring Ludacris, further exemplified her skill in blending sharp lyricism with rhythmic beats. The album also included more introspective tracks like “Pussycat,” which delved into more personal themes, showcasing Elliott’s versatility as an artist.

Achieving Commercial Success & Critical Acclaim

It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and was heralded as one of the year’s best albums. Elliott’s lyrical ingenuity and the album’s thematic depth received widespread acclaim, cementing her status as a visionary in the industry. The album’s commentary on social issues and its empowering messages resonated deeply with listeners, further elevating Elliott’s influence beyond music.

The album’s innovative blend of sounds and styles has been a blueprint for artists seeking to push the boundaries of traditional genre definitions.

Elliott’s fearless approach to addressing societal issues and personal struggles in her music set a new standard for honesty and vulnerability in hip-hop. Her messages of empowerment and resilience in Under Construction have inspired a generation of listeners and artists alike, contributing to a more inclusive and diverse music industry.

Today in Hip-Hop History: Timbaland and Magoo Released Their First Collaborative LP ‘Welcome to Our World’ 26 Years Ago

timbaland

On this day in 1997, the Norfolk, Virginia-based duo of producing legend Timbaland and rapper Magoo released their first studio album Welcome To Our World. For a debut album, this LP was widely successful, going platinum during the first year of its release. Welcome To Our World also led to the relationship that Timbaland built with DeVante Swing, which jumpstarted his career to superstardom.

This album is a classic among all-rap duos in Hip Hop history. Down in the Seven Cities/Hampton Roads area, Timbaland was already well known as a producer working with artists like Missy Elliot and Ginuwine who are also from Virginia and, at the time, rising star Aaliyah. The release of this particular album only fueled the fire of their local success to set them off toward greater things.

Welcome to Our World was very popular on the HBCU circuit and gave Timbaland and Magoo opportunities to perform at homecomings and other parties on campuses in the Southeast. The promotional success of this album even got it a peaking spot of 33rd on the Billboard 200 in 1997. The album also gave way to three hit singles: “Up Jump da Boogie”, which peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles chart, “Clock Strikes” featuring VA ghostwriter Madd Skillz, and “Luv 2 Luv Ya”. After this project, Timbaland and Magoo dropped two more successful studio LPs.

Queen Latifah Introduced ‘The Forever Futurist’ Missy Elliott’s Historic Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction

The documentaries, events, and televised performances commemorating hip-hop’s 50th anniversary have given the culture’s pioneers with their long-deserved flowers. On Friday, November 3, Missy Elliott added another milestone to the culture’s impact after becoming the first female rapper to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

During the ceremony, Queen Latifah took the stage at the Barclays Center to introduce her longtime friend. “Trust me, nothing sounded the same after Missy came on the scene,”said Latifah. “Nothing….everything changed – the bass lines changed, the pockets changed, the cadence, the writing. And that’s because Missy has always been a futurist, someone who’s always looking ahead.”

During Missy’s speech, she referred to several of the genre’s trailblazers, including Flavor Flav, Pepa (Salt-N-Pepa), and her longtime friend and collaborator Timbaland.

“There’s so many of y’all that are so legendary in here,” Elliott told the crowd. “This is the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. And so this is deeper than me just being up here. I was telling Robin [Roberts], you just feel like it’s so far to reach when you in the hip-hop world, and to be standing here, it means so much to me.”

For her live set, Missy performed a medley of her hits “Get Ur Freak Out,” “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch,” and “Lose Control.”

How Long Is The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony?

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony is scheduled for Friday night, November 3, beginning at 8 p.m. EST at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The 2023 class features (but is not limited to) Missy Elliott, Kate Bush, Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine, Sheryl Crow, The Spinners, and the late George Michael.

Additionally, Olivia Rodrigo is set to perform with Crow during the ceremony, which will also welcome to the stage the likes of Elliott, Nelson, Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton, Dave Matthews, HER, New Edition, St. Vincent, Stevie Nicks, Adam Levine, Carrie Underwood, Common, Ice T, LL Cool J, Miguel, Queen Latifah, and Sia as presenters or performers.

That is a lot to cram into one night, so how long is this year’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony expected to last? Well, considering it hasn’t happened yet — and there’s no official time limit, as far as anyone can tell — there’s no way to definitively know. However, as per Cleveland.com, the 2022 Rock Hall Induction Ceremony “lasted well over five hours.”

So, if you’re planning on watching the Disney+ livestream (as reported by Billboard in September), settle in. But if you’re a particularly patient person, you could also just wait until January 1, 2024, when ABC will air a three-hour edited broadcast beginning at 8 p.m. EST.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

What Time Is The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony?

It’s music lovers’ favorite time of the year. I’m not referring to when the unofficial Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey’s classic holiday tune, glares on the speakers of all public shopping centers around the country. Although that’s equally as exciting, I’m talking about the annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony. This year’s class includes heavy hitters Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, Kate Bush, Rage Against The Machine, Sheryl Crow, the late George Michael, The Spinners, and more.

Today (November 3), the induction ceremony and star-studded performances are set to take place. So, what time is the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony? According to the organization’s official website, show time is 8 p.m. Eastern. For those who weren’t able to secure tickets for the historic celebration going down in person at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, they’re in luck.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on Disney+. Find more information here. If you can’t catch it in real-time, according to Billboard, a three-hour “edited broadcast of highlights will air on ABC” will play on January 1, 2024, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. But with Grammy Award-winning recording artist and producer Missy Elliott set to make history as the first woman rapper to be inducted (especially on the heels of the culture’s 50th anniversary), you might want to watch it live.
